Services fair exhibitors impressed by Winter Olympics venue

Shougang Park, a steel mill-turned cultural and sports complex in western Beijing, is hosting some exhibitions and forums for this years China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) from Sept. 2 to 7.

Once the industrial heart of the Chinese capital, Shougang Park has taken on a new look as the headquarters of the Organizing Committee for the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and some game venues. Its winter sports facilities and exhibitions have attracted many exhibitors attending the CIFTIS.

“I didn’t expect Shougang Park to be so big and so well-built,” said 46-year-old Anura Banda from Sri Lanka. He came to Beijing in 1995, but it was his first visit to the park on Friday.

As the CEO of a Sri Lankan black tea trading company, he attended the themed cultural exhibition of countries along the Belt and Road.

Having lived in Beijing for years, he witnessed the “rise of western Beijing” with more and more new buildings and landmarks, and now Shougang Park.

Founded in 1919, Shougang, meaning “capital steel” in the Chinese language, is an epitome of China’s industrial history. Entering the 21st century, Shougang was relocated to neighboring Hebei Province in 2010, and the vast complex was included in the first batch of China’s industrial heritage protection list.

Eight thematic exhibitions supporting forums and side events of this year’s CIFTIS took place for the first time in Shougang Park. The total exhibition area covered about 94,000 square meters.

Anura has brought 24 Sri Lankan black tea flavors to the exhibition, including blackcurrant, caramel, and peach.

“Chinese people are pretty inclusive and welcome various cultures. Sri Lankan black tea is popular among Chinese young people and sells well,” he said.

Over 20 years ago, Anura studied at Beijing Sport University to further his martial arts skills and chose to stay after graduation.

“My wife still works in the sports industry, and we are very much looking forward to the Beijing Winter Olympics,” he said.

The park has become the headquarters of the Beijing Winter Olympics since 2016. The remains of the former repair workshop, coking plant, and blast furnace retain the “steel memory” of the past, while the ice and snow sports facilities such as ski jumping platforms now attract people’s attention.

“The steel plant has been transformed into a cultural and exhibition venue for the Winter Olympics. The venue’s use for dual purposes is remarkable. And I think that shows the innovative mode of thinking,” said Sobah Rasheed, deputy ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to China.

“Events like this are rare [during the pandemic]. The movement of large crowds under one roof in safety and good health shows the resilience of the Chinese health infrastructure, which is exemplary,” he said.

The opening ceremony of the World Winter Sports (Beijing) Expo also took place in the park on Friday morning.

Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., chairman of IOC Coordination Committee for Beijing 2022, said via video link that the Shougang Park in Beijing is living proof of the game’s legacy and sustainability.

“Once a very complicated and contaminating industrial complex, now it’s a combination of sports parks and sports facilities. And it’s open now for the general public to enjoy a wonderful new part of our dear Beijing,” he said.

As the guest country, Italy exhibited snowboards, ski clothing, protective gear, outdoor tents, and other products related to ice and snow sports at the park.

Paolo Bazzoni, chairman of the China-Italy Chamber of Commerce, said the increasing interest of Chinese consumers in ice and snow sports provided massive development space for Italian enterprises.

“The upcoming winter Olympic games in both China and Italy will increase the exchange of best practices between the two countries and, given the 2026 Olympics, boost the tourism and hospitality sector in Italy,” he said.

A skating performance is staged during the World Winter Sports (Beijing) Expo 2021 at Shougang Park in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 3, 2021. The opening ceremony of World Winter Sports (Beijing) Expo 2021, and its main conference are held here Friday. Thai shooters suffer case of rusty trigger-finger at Paralympics

Yet another Thai shooter bit the dust at the Tokyo Paralympics on Friday as Thailand’s team paid the price for a lack of practice time.

Wannipa Leungvilai fell short of a medal in the women’s 50-metre rifle 3 positions SH1 after getting just one hour of practice per day in Japan. Wannipa watched her teammate Chutima Saenlar eliminated in qualifying but managed to scrape through to the final, where she came eighth.

Thailand have so far failed to qualify in five other shooting events: the men’s 10-metre air rifle standing, men’s 50-metre rifle 3 positions SH1, mixed 10-metre air rifle standing SH2, mixed 10-metre air rifle prone SH2, and women’s 10-metre air rifle standing SH1.

Head coach Thanachai Prasarn recently revealed that all shooting teams at the Games were given only one hour of practice per day. He said the training time was short, but the Thai team had focused on simulating competition conditions during their preparation in Nakhon Ratchasima.

Hope of a medal from Thailand’s shooters now rests with four athletes.

Team Thailand are currently in 24th place at the Games, with four gold, four silver and seven bronze medals.

THAILANDS KIRADECH FACES MENTAL HURDLE IN BID FOR PGA TOUR RETURN #SootinClaimon.Com

THAILANDS KIRADECH FACES MENTAL HURDLE IN BID FOR PGA TOUR RETURN

Thai golf star Kiradech Aphibarnrat admits he needs to overcome a mental hurdle if he is to regain his PGA TOUR card via the Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance this week.

The 32-year-old enters the last event of the Korn Ferry Tour Finals in 22nd position of the ranking, with the top-25 earning PGA TOUR memberships for the new season on Sunday. With his golfing fate in his own hands, Kiradech is determined to step on the plate and produce the right result to regain his playing rights after finishing outside the top-125 of the FedExCup standings at the end of the PGA TOUR Regular Season last month.

“I believe every player is going to get some pressure going into the next four days. It can cost almost a whole year. Players between 15th to 25th  in the ranking will feel it the most. I have to do really well in this last event. I know there will be a lot of stress and pressure on the final nine holes on Sunday,” said Kiradech.

The burly Thai has stumbled across the finish line over the last two weekends. He was tied second going into the final round of the Albertsons Boise Open presented by Chevron before finishing tied 20th with a closing 74 and at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship, he was cruising in the top-10 before dropping four bogeys on his back nine.

“Last three months, I feel more comfortable with how I’m swinging the golf club. Only one part of my game is the mental side. I can’t control myself well enough to get the job done. The last two weeks, I was tied second and shot 3-over. Last week, I was in the top-10 and shoot four over on the back and. There are a lot of good things, a lot of positive things but I can’t get my mental (strength) back at the same time. Hopefully I can do it this weekend,” said Kiradech.

“Going into Sundays, I can’t seem to get into tempo,  can’t get the momentum that I used to get and I always do well in the final round. I guess it takes time. I don’t think it’s too far away.”

If things don’t fall to plan, Kiradech says he has the option to return and compete on the European Tour where he is a four-time winner. The European Tour and PGA TOUR also have a strategic alliance and will co-sanction three tournaments in the new season.

“The PGA TOUR is one of the biggest in the world, and everyone wants to be part of this TOUR. I grew up in a small country in Asia, dreaming of playing on the PGA TOUR and I’ve managed to do it for three years. I think it’s been a success as it’s always been my goal to play here,” he said.

“If you look at my career, I’ve played well on the European Tour and if I don’t play well this week, I have my European Tour card in my pocket.  In my career so far, I have four wins there and my world ranking came up through the European Tour. Of course I still want to be part of the PGA TOUR but it’s not easy to stay here. It’s a high standard and young college players come out every year and they are hungry too.

“I just want to enjoy my game in the next four days. I will try to enjoy the week and see what happens the next four days.”

Indonesian football lovers hesitant to kick again despite relaxation of pandemic restrictions #SootinClaimon.Com

Indonesian football lovers hesitant to kick again despite relaxation of pandemic restrictions

Playing football like the old days is still a wild thought amid the pandemic, though limited sports activities are allowed following eased restrictions from Level 4 to Level 3 in Indonesia.

Bernard Budiman, a healthcare entrepreneur from Jakarta, has been itching to play football again.

Since the implementation of the public activity restrictions in the islands of Java and Bali, locally known as PPKM, indoor and outdoor sports facilities were closed in accordance with PPKM Level 4, the highest level of restrictions.

Yet, even as the restrictions have been lowered from Level 4 to Level 3 in Jakarta, meaning limited sports activities are now allowed, Budiman remains hesitant to resume playing.

“I really miss football, but I think it’s still too early to participate in outdoor sports,” Budiman told Xinhua.

The Indonesian government announced to extend PPKM in Java and Bali for another week to Sept. 6 during a virtual press conference in Jakarta on Monday. President Joko Widodo said that there are now 25 municipalities in Java and Bali which are still implementing Level 4 restrictions, compared to last week’s 51.

Under the latest Level 3 rules, sports facilities in open spaces are allowed to reopen with 50 percent capacity and masks are required to be worn at all times, except for sports such as swimming.

Budiman has been conducting shooting drills and footwork practice with one or two of his friends in his backyard, where he owns a goalpost.

They used to play on football pitches located in South Jakarta. According to Budiman, the pitches are now open and available to rent again.

Related Stories

The last time Devin Buana, a recent university graduate living in Jakarta, played football was in June. Several members from his football community were tested positive for COVID-19 shortly after the group’s last session in the Senayan area at Central Jakarta.

Before the pandemic, Buana used to play as often as twice to three times a week.

Buana shares a similar concern with Budiman, which is the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic would be easily contracted from the constant physical contact and close breathing that occur during a football game.

Xaviera Naomi, an Indonesian college student in the United States who is currently back in Jakarta, started playing football with her high school friends at a mini soccer pitch in South Jakarta on Friday.

“We put masks on at all times and play four versus four games. Last weekend, a total of twelve players came, with eight playing in the field and four sitting on the bench,” Naomi explained.

She added that all of their temperatures’ were checked upon entry, and seats were socially distanced.

Moving forward, Budiman said that he will start playing football again when the government achieves its target of vaccinating 208.2 million people across the country by January 2022.

“Building herd immunity is the only solution for the resumption of group sports activities,” he said.
