Dortmund ease 5-2 past Frankfurt in Bundesliga

Borussia Dortmund opened their German Bundesliga campaign with a 5-2 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt thanks to Erling Haalands brace.

Erling Haaland provided a brace in Borussia Dortmund’s 5-2 victory over uninspired Eintracht Frankfurt in the first round of Bundesliga on Saturday.

The “BVB” dominated the proceedings from the starting whistle and kept Frankfurt’s defence busy. It took the hosts, however, some time to produce clear-cut opportunities.

With 23 minutes gone, Dortmund broke the deadlock with great assistance of Haaland, whose square pass allowed Marco Reus to mark his 100th Bundesliga goal.

Even though Frankfurt lacked in penetration, the visitors leveled the scores out of the blue in the 27th minute when Dortmund defender Felix Passlack cleared the ball into the wrong goal.

Marco Rose’s men remained unimpressed and restored their one goal lead moments later through Thorgan Hazard, who had all time and space in the box to beat Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.

Frankfurt couldn’t put up resistance whereas Dortmund continued powerful to make it 3-1 after Haaland shrugged off a defender before sending the ball past hapless Trapp in the 34th minute.

Dortmund thought they had made it four but the video assistant referee disallowed Reus’ second goal of the night five minutes before the break.

After the restart, the “Eagles” took over as Rafael Santos Borre came close twice. The striker’s header on target got defused by Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel before Borre pulled over the goal from promising position in the 55th minute.

Just when Frankfurt was on fire, it was Dortmund who made it 4-1 as Giovanni Reyna benefitted on a loose ball and poke home from five meters at the hour mark.

The “BVB” wasn’t done with the scoring and killed the game with 70 minutes played when Reus sent Haaland, who finished the job with only Trapp to beat.

Frankfurt reduced the arrears against the flow on the game as Jens Petter Hauge tapped home a flicked corner from very close with four minutes remaining.

“A good performance by my team. It was about that we wanted to start well and that’s what we did,” Dortmund head coach Marco Rose said.

“Today we have to recognize that we had no chance. We made too many mistakes,” Frankfurt head coach Oliver Glasner said.

On Sunday, Mainz host Leipzig while Cologne take on Hertha Berlin to conclude the first round in Bundesliga.

Real Madrid kick off season with 4-1 win away to Alaves

Real Madrid celebrate a 4-1 win away to Alaves in La Liga season opener, while Chinas Wu Lei played 63 minutes in Espanyols return to the top flight.

Real Madrid kicked off the new season Saturday with a 4-1 win away to Alaves thanks to two goals from Karim Benzema and a header from defender Nacho Fernandez.

Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard both started for Real Madrid, but the game was even in the first half and it wasn’t until the 48th minute that Benzema opened the scoring after a move involving Bale and Hazard.

Nacho then doubled Real Madrid’s lead following a smart free kick and good work from Rede Valverde allowed Benzema to net his second of the game.

Although Joselu got a goal back from the penalty spot, Vinicius Jr added Madrid’s fourth in injury time to complete a satisfactory return for Carlo Ancelotti.

Saturday’s three other games all ended in draws with Espanyol returning to La Liga with a 0-0 draw away to Osasuna. Wu Lei played 63 minutes for Espanyol on their return to the top flight.

Mallorca took a point on their return to La Liga with a 1-1 draw at home to Betis, after Betis striker Juanmi canceled out Brian Olivan’s first half opener with the help of a big deflection off Mallorca keeper Manolo Reina.

A 96th minute equalizer from Cadiz forward Alfonso Espino rescued a point for his side at home Levante, who led though Jose Luis Morales’ 50th top-flight goal in the 39th minute of the game.

Levante did enough to win the game, but Cadiz’s pressure in the closing moments saw them rescue a point that looked to be lost.

On Friday night, Carlos Soler got Valencia and new boss Pepe Bordalas off to a winning start with a 1-0 win at home to Bordalas’ former club Getafe. Valencia had defender Hugo Guillamon sent off in the second minute of the game, but Soler’s first half penalty was enough to give them a win against a rival that had a lot of the ball, but looked light in attack.

Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool send early message out to Manchester City in Premier League

Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool all off to highly flying start to the English Premier Leagues new season.

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as Manchester United sounded out a warning to the Premier League with a 5-1 thrashing of Leeds United.

New signing Raphael Varane was presented to the fans in Old Trafford ahead of the game and United’s other new arrival Jadon Sancho was on the bench, so Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side kicked off with virtually the same starting 11 as last season.

Fernandes put his side ahead in the 30th minute and although Luke Ayling drew Leeds level three minutes after halftime, quickfire goals from Mason Greenwood and Fernandez in the 52nd and 54th minute put United firmly in the driving seat.

Fernandes completed his hat-trick on 60 minutes and Fred made it 5-1 eight minutes later.

There was no record signing Romelu Lukaku for Chelsea, but the European Champions also made their Premier League ambitions clear with a 3-0 win which ruined Patrick Viera’s debut as Crystal Palace coach.

Chelsea dominated from start to finish with Marcos Alonso and Christian Pulisic putting them 2-0 up at the break and defender Trevor Chalobah scored his first Premier League goal just before the hour.

Liverpool also showed they mean business as they claimed a 3-0 victory away to Norwich City, with Diogo Jota putting Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead on 26 minutes, before Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah rounded off a good afternoon for Liverpool, who had Virgil van Dijk back in the side after last season’s knee injury.

It was business as usual for veteran striker Jamie Vardy, who scored the only goal of the game to give Leicester City a 1-0 win over Wolves, who had chances but looked blunt in attack.

Everton came back from conceding an Adam Armstrong goal to give Rafael Benitez a winning start at Goodison Park. Richarlison, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominc Carvert-Lewin all scored after the break to give Everton a 3-1 victory over Southampton.

Former Southampton striker Danny Ings netted a 97th minute penalty, but it was not enough to save Aston Villa from a 3-2 defeat away to Watford, with the side that has returned to the top-flight taking the points thanks to goals from goals from Emmanuel Bonaventure, Ismaila Sarr and ‘Cucho’ Hernandez.

Brighton got off to a winning start as goals on 72 and 78 minutes from Neal Maupay and Alex McAlister saw them overturn James Tarkovski’s second minute opener for Burnley.

Newly promoted Brentford kicked off the new season in winning style on Friday night as goals in each half from Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard gave them a 2-0 win over a very disappointing Arsenal.

Manchester City visit Tottenham and Newcastle United entertain West Ham in Sunday’s remaining matches.

STRONG THAI SHOWING AT 2021 TRUST GOLF WOMENS SCOTTISH OPEN

Ariya Jutanugarn and Atthaya Thitikul narrowly missed out on 2021 Trust Golf Womens Scottish Open victory after Ryann OToole closed out an incredible round of 64 to win her first LPGA title.

Atthaya Thitikul was only one stroke behind the leaders going into the final round at Dumbarnie Links, a round of 66 saw a total of eight birdies to finish in a tie for second place alongside New Zealand’s Lydia Ko. The 18-year old was proud of her performance and has her sights set on obtaining an LPGA card  – “I putt pretty well today and hit a pretty solid round today. 6-under, but at least it’s not enough for the win, but I just know that I tried my best and I’m proud of myself already.

I will say I just feel good. My focus for this year, trying to improve myself every day and then trying to get the card, member card on LPGA.” Former world no 1, Ariya Jutanugarn had an impressive final round that saw an eagle on the 2nd hole and three birdies on the back nine to leave her at -13 and in solo fourth place. Jutanugarn has become fond of links golf after a great performance this week – “I would say I really enjoy playing links right now because I feel like it’s really interesting and really challenge, like just depend how the weather going and it’s so much fun this week and I feel like I have pretty good experience.”

Trust_Golf_Woman's_Scottish_Sunday.MR

Jasmine Suwannapura’s 69 which included 7 birdies left her at -7 and in a tie for 15th place. The 2020 AIG Women’s Open runner up has found this week a great learning experience –  I haven’t really played on a windy golf course before. We only play in Scotland for two weeks a year, so to be able to come back here and play really windy course and the links course, it’s really fun for me. So this week, I learned that my hybrid can go 130-yard shot, which is really rare for me. But yeah, we just have to adapt and get better, be better and learn from each shot.”

The other Thai’s on the leader board include, Pajaree Anannarukarn who finished T22 after a second consecutive 69, and Patty Tavatanakit who shot a superb final round of 67 which included 2 eagles and 2 birdies to finish at T27.

Thai Trust Golf invite Prima Thammaraks posted a third consecutive 72 to finish at -2, which was also enough to seal her the 5th qualifying spot for next week’s AIG Women’s Open. It will be her second appearance in the Women’s Open. Thammaraks explained “To be able to play my second British Open would be amazing. I played my first one here and that’s still one of my favourite things to do. Coming here, I didn’t really think that I was going to stay and play another one. But what a way to spend my off week. I am so grateful to Trust Golf for the invite here as I had a great week here at Dumbarnie and its lead me TO qualifying for Carnoustie too! “

Koeman: Barca have to close the book on Messi

“You have to close the book on Messi. We have new players and we have to move on,” says Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman.

FC Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman said on Friday that the club needs to “close the book” on Lionel Messi and look to the future.

ADVERTISEMENTx

Messi’s departure from Barca to join Paris Saint-Germain after it became impossible to fit his contract into the club’s wage structure has been the shock of the summer and also a blow to Koeman, who had said he was counting on the forward for the new season.

Speaking to ESPN, Koeman expressed his disappointment at Messi’s departure and said he was “surprised by the day and the moment when I knew that he had finished playing for Barcelona”.

“It was difficult because we are not talking about just any player, we are talking about Lionel Messi, the best player in the world for many seasons, and we were all disappointed that he will not play for us this season,” he said, before looking to the future.

“You have to change fast, because the new season is starting, and we can’t remain disappointed at what has happened.”

“We have to understand that there is always an end for a player. You have to close the book on Messi, because now we have to focus on this new season. We have new players [Memphis Depay, Emerson, Eric Garcia and the injured Sergio Aguero] and we have to move on,” commented the coach, who also gave a nod to Barca’s youth system.

“We have young players in the squad this season, and it is also for the future, we are working on the future of this club, and it is really important to focus on this and not focus on what happened in the last days.”

“Of course we will have more problems scoring goals; Messi scored 30 goals last season, so other players have to contribute more and take the next step: it is more about the team now than the individual players,” concluded Koeman.

List of Top 5 highest-paid football players in the world for 2021

The football players at the highest levels earn a huge balance of money and as far as the very best in the business like Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar are concerned. Now we will show you the list of the top 5 highest paid footballers in the world in 2021.

The beautiful game is a multi-billion pound industry, with the best football players in the world raking in vast sums with every swipe of the ball.

Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar may be considered the best three players around, but is their talent reflected by financial success?

Top 5 highest-paid football players in the world for 2021

1. Lionel Messi (PSG) – £960,000 per week

The Argentian captain and PSG player earn £960,000 per week

Messi has now signed a deal worth £25m per year as a base salary after tax. That works out at approximately £50m per year before tax.

Once bonuses, signing-on fees and appearance fees are paid, Messi will be lifting a pay packet worth well above the million-a-week milestone, and that’s before external sponsorships.

An extra £25m is added to his pot from endorsements and sponsorships with the likes of Adidas and Pepsi.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus) – £900,000 per week

Apparently being the most popular athlete on the planet isn’t enough to land you a place at the top of the rich list.

Cristiano Ronaldo may be the most followed sportsperson on Instagram but his annual earnings are marginally dwarfed by one footballer.

The Portuguese superstar tops up his near-million pound weekly wages with an annual figure of approximately £34m in other earnings from his own Ronaldo brand and sponsors such as Nike and Herbalife.

He became the top goalscorer in football history with a goal for Juventus against Napoli in the 2021 Italian Super Cup to take his total for club and country to 760 and has continued to find the net since.

3. Neymar (PSG) – £606,000 per week

The Brazilian’s transfer from Barcelona to PSG is still the record transfer fee for any player in the world of football, and why not because he moved to another club in between his prime years.

Despite all the transfer speculations and reports that he is unhappy, Neymar has scored plenty of goals for his side and continues to do so. Hence, the dazzling Brazilian makes the cut at 3rd position in our list of the highest paid football players.

4. Luis Suarez (Atletico Madrid) – £575,000 per week

Luis Suarez was controversially sold by Barcelona for a very low fee and made them pay dearly as he fired Atletico to the La Liga title at the first time of asking.

He scored 21 goals in 32 La Liga games to super charge Atletico’s surge for the title and has been worth every penny of his wage, unlike some of Barcelona’s big name stars.

This is likely to be Suarez’s last big pay day as the 34-year-old approaches the end of his career.

5. Antoine Griezmann (Barcelona) – £575,000 per week

Barcelona’s long-anticipated signing of Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid in 2019 is the fifth most-expensive transfer in history but the versatile forward has hardly set the Nou Camp alight.

The Catalan club need to get their finances in order, so Griezmann’s mega deal could put him in line for a move away before it expires.

La Liga Preview: The heat is on as new La Liga season kicks off in Spain #SootinClaimon.Com

La Liga Preview: The heat is on as new La Liga season kicks off in Spain

With one day to go, the new La Liga season will be opened, with lots of changes to watch.

Fans will be back in the stands after over a year of empty grounds when the new La Liga season kicks off this weekend in Spain.

The opening round of matches starts on Friday night when Valencia entertain Getafe after fate has decided that new Valencia coach Pepe Bordalas’ first game for his new club is against the team he left at the end of last season to move to the Mestalla Stadium.

Valencia have had another summer without important signings, so Bordalas’ influence will be key to their survival while it will be interesting to see if adopt a more attacking style under his replacement Michel Gonzalez.

ADVERTISEMENTx

It has been a low-key summer for Real Madrid, whose only new face is defender David Alaba and we will have to see if Carlo Ancelotti decides to trust Gareth Bale, who is back from his loan at Tottenham.

Madrid are without Toni Kroos with a groin injury for Saturday’s visit to play Alaves, while Dani Cabellos is also sidelined with an ankle ligament injury and left-back Ferland Mendy has also been struggling with a muscle problem ahead of the league opener.

Real Madrid's Isco (1st L) vies with Getafe's Mauro Arambarri (2nd L) during their Spanish league football match in Getafe, Spain, on April 18, 2021.

Results haven’t been brilliant for Ancelotti in the run up to the new campaign and if Lucas Perez and Joselu hit form in the Alaves attack, the season could kick off with a surprise.

The first round of matches in the summer comes with Spain expected to bake in the first major heatwave of the year and it will be hot in Saturday’s 5pm kick-off as Osasuna face Espanyol, who return to the top flight after a season in the second division.

Supporters of RCD Espanyol cheer the team's return to the Spanish First Division at RCDE Stadium, Cornella, Spain, May 9, 2021.

Osasuna look to have improved in attack with Ante Budimir signing a permanent deal and Kike Garcia joining from Eibar over the summer.

Mallorca also celebrate their return to the top flight with a home game against Betis, who travel without midfielder, Sergio Canales, with an ankle injury, while new arrival Yousouf Sabely has a muscle problem and Cristian Tello has to serve a suspension from the end of last season.

Cadiz face Levante, who have midfielder Jose Campana back in the side after he missed last season with a series of hamstring injuries, while Victor Chust could go straight into the Cadiz side after his loan deal from Real Madrid.

Sunday’s big game sees FC Barcelona at home to Real Sociedad as Barca start the post-Leo Messi era.

Fans wait for Messi outside the Camp Nou Stadium in Barcelona, Spain, Aug. 8, 2021.Fans wait for Messi outside the Camp Nou Stadium in Barcelona, Spain, Aug. 8, 2021.

As well as bring without Messi, Barca coach Ronald Koeman has several injury problems with Ansu Fati still not fully fit, while Frenkie de Jong, Oscar Mingueza, Ousmane Dembele, Marc Andre Ter Stegen and Kun Aguero are also sidelined.

There is also a doubt whether new signings Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia will be able to play as on Thursday they had still not been included into the first-team squad due to the same financial fair play issues that led to Messi’s departure and with fans back in the Camp Nou, we can probably expect a ‘difficult’ atmosphere for club president, Joan Laporta.

Atletico Madrid kick off their title defense away to Celta Vigo in what promises to be an entertaining game if Celta maintain the swashbuckling style they showed under coach Eduardo Coudet.

Newly promoted Rayo Vallecano face a baptism of fire in every sense of the word as they travel to play Sevilla on a day where temperatures are expected to climb well over 40 degrees centigrade in Seville during the day and still be hovering in the 30’s when the game kicks off at 22:15 local time.

The first round of games ends on Monday as Roberto Moreno makes his debut as Granada coach with a difficult game in Villarreal, who pushed Chelsea all the way in the European Supercup before Athletic Club Bilbao aim to continue their pre-season form on their visit to Elche, who beat the Basque side 2-0 in the last game of last season to ensure their survival in the elite.

Atletico's players celebrate after the Spanish league football match between Real Valladolid CF and Atletico de Madrid.
