Thai duo Jazz and Gunn aim to find their kicks

THAI DUO JAZZ AND GUNN AIM TO FIND THEIR KICKS IN MENS GOLF COMPETITION

Thai golf duo Jazz Janewattananond and Gunn Charoenkul have found added motivation ahead of the men’s golf competition at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 after finding inspiration from compatriot Panipak Wongpattanakit, who won gold in the women’s taekwondo 49kg event.

Both golfers were glued to the TV screen in the Olympic Village on Saturday night when the 23-year-old Panipak delivered Thailand’s first gold medal of the Games with a victory in the final seconds against Spain’s Adriana Cerezo Iglesias.

“Gunn and I watched Thailand take gold, and it was pretty amazing even watching it on TV,” said Jazz, who is a six-time Asian Tour winner. “We were like, ‘Oh my God, this is happening and we’re getting a medal.’ It kind of kickstarted our emotions a little bit and we’re now thinking it’s possible even in our sport to win a medal and let’s go do it.”

The 25-year-old Jazz and Gunn, 29, are making their Olympic debuts at Kasumigaseki Country Club starting on Thursday where they hope to land Thailand’s first-ever medal in the men’s golf competition. Five years ago in Rio, Kiradech Aphibarnrat tied for fifth and Thongchai Jaidee finished 15th.

Jazz and GunnJazz and Gunn

Jazz, who is ranked 145th in the world, said being amongst other Olympians has been an amazing experience so far. “It’s pretty surreal. It didn’t hit me until pretty much arriving at the Games Village and walking around, going to the gym and walking to the recreation centre. It really hit me that I’m really one of the Olympians now. Back in the day, golf wasn’t in the Olympics, so I kind of had to pinch myself that I’m here now and representing Thailand. The dream is to get the gold but if you say ‘Jazz, you can go home now with any medal’, I’ll gladly take it.”

Gunn, a two-time winner on PGA TOUR Series-China and a regular on the Japan Golf Tour, said Panipak’s last-gasp victory in the martial arts event was awe-inspiring. “We were sitting on our couch and there were three Thai guys watching Thailand vs Spain and it was kind of scary at the same time as there were quite a few Spain athletes behind us! We kind of won gold in the last 15 seconds and overtook Spain by one point. It shows it can be done,” said Gunn.

“The Olympics are big in our home country,” Gunn added. “It’s also my first time representing my national team so I’m really proud and happy to be here. Not everybody gets a chance to compete in the Olympics. It’s massive. Everyone back home holds the Olympics higher than the majors. I’m just humbled to be here.”

Jazz competed in the 2010 Asia Pacific Amateur Championship at Kasumigaseki as a 14-year-old but has no recollection of his time at the historic venue. It was the same event that saw Hideki Matsuyama of Japan claim a five-stroke victory which propelled his golf career on the PGA TOUR. Matsuyama, the reigning Masters champion, will carry Japan’s golden hopes this week.

“I can’t remember much but it is good to be back,” said Jazz. “The course looks really nice, and the greens are pure. I played on the Japan Tour in 2019 and hope I can use my experience for this week. It’s just amazing to have the Thai flag on my shirt. I turned professional early so I didn’t have a chance to represent Thailand too much although we do it when we’re on Tour. But it’s not quite like this. This is different. We’re playing for Thailand and words can’t explain how it feels to be doing this.”

Gunn reckons the par-71, 7,447-yard Kasumigaseki’s East course could produce low scores with how conditions are set up. “This is a pretty long course,” he said. “With the weather forecast, the fairway might get softer and we’ll have long irons in. Some greens are really undulating too and you have to put your ball in the right spots to give yourself chances. The greens are soft and you can go really low. It could be 20 under and better.”

Ratchanok dominant as Thai shooter springs surprise on day 3 of Olympics

25 July 2021: World No 6 Ratchanok Intanon and mixed doubles medal hopes Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai remained in the hunt for medals at the Olympic Games TOKYO 2020 at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza in Tokyo on Sunday.

The 2012 Games quarter-finalist Ratchanok kicked off her campaign in Group N against Laura Sarosi of Hungary and, as expected, prevailed in straight games, 21-5 21-10.

“It was almost a good match except for the second game. I was a bit off and had to talk to my coach to regain my focus. Next round I will need to be more focused against a Malaysian girl,” said Ratchanok, who will rest tomorrow before going back into action against Soniia Cheah Su Ya of Malaysia on Tuesday.

In mixed doubles group B, Dechapol and Sapsiree cruised past Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue of France  21-9 21-15 for two wins in a row.

“Everything has gone according to our game plan after two rounds. We have had no problem adjusting to the conditions on the court,” said Sapsiree, who celebrated two back-to-back Thailand Open titles and one BWF World Tour Finals triumph with Dechapol in January.

“Our goal is to finish top of the group. We have one more group-stage match with the British pair and we will give it 100% against them,” said Dechapol. The Thai duo take on Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith on Monday.

In men’s singles group K, Kantapon Wangcharoen was briefly tested by Kai Schaefer of Germany before winning 21-13 21- 15. The 14th-seeded Thai meets Toby Penty of Great Britain in his last group match on Wednesday.

However, the women’s doubles team of Rawinda Prajongjai and Jongkolphan Kititharakul suffered their second straight defeat, losing to Kim Soyeon and Kong Heeyong of South Korea  19-21 22-4 in group D to end their chances of a berth in the knock-out stage.

In shooting , 2016 Asian Championships silver medalist Isarapa Imprasertsuk missed only three targets in scoring 72 points to trail co-leaders Diana Bacosi of Italy and We Meng of China by three shots in the women’s skeet qualifying at the Asaka Shooting-Shotgun Ranges on Saturday.

The unfancied world No 32 missed two clays in the first shoot and one in the second but shattered all targets in the third to sit fifth with 72 points. Bacosi and Wei gave faultless performances, each firing a perfect score of 75.

Sutiya Jiewchaloemmit, in her fourth Olympiad, was in 13th with 70 points. Each shooter will take aim at 50 more targets on Sunday when only the eight top scorers will move into the final.

However no Thais survived qualifying in the women’s 10m air pistol at the Asaka Shooting Range. Tanyaporn Prucksakorn, in her fourth Olympic Games, shot 570 to finish in 22nd while national flag-bearer Naphaswan Yangpaiboon fired 560 points to end up 39th out of 53 shooters.

In table tennis, two Thai women’s singles players remained on track in their pursuit of glory at  the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. World No 88 Orawan Paranang rallied after losing the first game to beat world No 51 Matelova Hana of the Czech Republic 4-2 (9-11 11-5 11-6 9-11 11-8 11-8).

Thai ace and world No 41 Suthasini Sawettabut, who had a first-round bye, toppled world No 75 Maria Paulina Vega of Chile 43-0 (11-5 11-4 11-3 11-3).

In Judo, Thai-Japanese Kachakorn Warasiha lost to Iraoui Soumiya of Morocco by Ippon-seoi-nage golden score, 0-10, in the women’s 52kg opening round at the Nippon Budokan venue.

At the Sea Forest Waterway in Tokyo Bay, Siwakorn Wongpin and Nawamin Deenoi settled at bottom sixth in the  lightweight men’s double sculls Repechage with a time of 7:20.50 minutes in heat 1. They will compete in the final C for classification on Tuesday.

At the Fuji International Speedway, Jutatip Maneephan was eliminated during the first 80km course as she fell 12 minutes behind the leading packing in the women’s road race event.

In Olympic debut, skateboarding learns to take itself seriously #SootinClaimon.Com

In Olympic debut, skateboarding learns to take itself seriously

TOKYO – Jagger Eaton had just won the first Olympic skateboarding bronze medal ever Sunday morning, so he started running. He ran off the course at Ariake Urban Sports Park, through a tunnel under the stands and across the road outside.

Somewhere behind him was the gold medalist, Japan’s Yuto Horigome, standing with his country’s flag around his shoulders. Photographers were taking Horigome’s photo. But Eaton kept running, too happy with his new medal to stop for pictures, too.

“Yeah!” he screamed.

“Woooo!” he yelled.

“F— yeah!” he hollered.

On the day street skateboarding debuted in the Olympics and a sport once derided as the pastime of misfits went mainstream, the 20-year-old from Mesa, Ariz., wasn’t going to scoff at his bronze medal with the indifference of a longtime skater too jaded to celebrate something as establishment as the Olympics.

So Eaton kept running. He ran behind the media tent, around the wooden practice half-pipe and up the steel outdoor stairs that led to the skaters’ locker room on the second floor of a temporary building. He raised his arms and began chanting “U-S-A! U-S-A! U.S.A!”

“Other [skateboarding] competitions just aren’t the Olympic Games and that’s a fact,” Eaton said, after he finally had stopped running. “Anybody who tells you that it isn’t is lying.”

Skateboarding has brought to these Olympics a strange convergence of cultures, mixing the boundaryless world of street skateboarding with the more rigid, often uptight structure of more traditional sports. For those accustomed to the stoic marches of swimmers or the fierce determination of gymnasts, the silly, almost giddy cool of the street skateboarders Sunday had to be jarring.

The sport itself is essentially a competitive form of the invisible competition street skateboarders have with themselves on ledges or park railings or the concrete stairs of office building plazas. The Ariake Urban Sports Park was designed to replicate such places with a layout of ramps and stairs and railings in front of a wall of blue bleachers, empty except for a sea of writers and photographers. It is not like any other summer Olympic playing surface. Almost to emphasize this, the skateboarders rolled off the rails and ledges with carefree laughs.

“What can skating give to the Olympics?” asked American star Nyjah Huston, who has a body covered with tattoos and 4.8 million Instagram followers. “Some great competition, some new vibes, some new energy that I think was kind of needed.”

The skateboarders all talked about how they are great friends both in and out of contests, as thrilled for each other’s success as they are when a pal on a street corner lands on his board after flipping off a building ledge. They referred to each other as “homies” and constantly gave bro hugs when a competitor walked past.

But an unfamiliar urgency trickled through all the easygoing banter Sunday. Though the street skateboarding Olympians regularly compete in leagues and events such as the X-Games, the Olympics had become something very much different for them. They had become packaged and marketed, pushed into a glossy world that seemed new. It’s one thing to brand for skateboard and clothing companies that sell a vision of being an outsider. It’s quite another to be pushed toward a world that has never so much as glanced at kids skating off the walls in the park.

There was tension Sunday, and it got to many of them. Huston, who is Horigome’s prime rival and was a medal favorite, crashed on all four of his final trick attempts in the finals, landing on his backside each time.

“I feel the pressure from the Olympics, but I also feel the pressure from all my friends and homies back in the USA that’s rooting for me because we’ve never skated for our countries before and that means a lot,” he said.

As the finals wore on, Eaton kept pulling his phone from his shorts, changing the music that pumped into his tiny wireless earphones, going from Playboi Carti to country in honor of his suburban Phoenix roots to ultimately Lil Wayne’s “John” on his final trick attempts because nothing gets him hyped like Lil Wayne’s “John.”

“The most high-pressure situation of my life,” Eaton called it.

This was no X-Games. And no one felt that intensity Sunday more than Horigome, who was competing in the very ward, Koto, where he grew up learning to skate at a local park. Skateboarding is not fully embraced culturally in Japan, and several questions to him Sunday were about how there are official signs in the neighborhoods around the Olympic grounds banning skateboarding.

Though Horigome lives in California now he seemed to be carrying the hopes of many here that a gold medal somehow would change public perceptions of skateboarding. Among the other skateboarders, Horigome is respected for his willingness to try things the others would never attempt. “A progressive skater,” Eaton called him.

On Sunday, he looked tense, at one point sitting on a ledge with his head down, looking distraught when an early run did not go well. But when he landed his final trick, earning a 9.3 out of 10, he raced off the course with a wide, relieved smile.

Asked later, in a news conference, what his victory meant for skateboarding in Japan, he did not smile.

“I would like to commemorate the beauty of skateboarding going forward,” he said in Japanese.

Beside him, Eaton couldn’t stop grinning. As a child, his family ran gymnastics gyms, and the Olympics were always something revered in their home. And even though he eventually turned to skateboarding, captivated by the feeling of freedom the board gave him, he also understood the power of what an Olympic medal means. As he sat at the news conference, he caught the eye of Brazil’s Kelvin Hoefler, the silver medalist, and laughed if for no other reason than he still couldn’t believe what had just happened.

Eaton was asked where he planned to display his medal. He paused. He had no idea.

“I don’t even have a house,” he said, still a skateboarding kid, trying not to grow up on the day street skateboarding became adult.

Japans Horigome lands first Olympic skateboard gold at Tokyo 2020

22-year-old Japanese Yuto Horigome has become the first-ever Olympic skateboarding champion.

Yuto Horigome of Japan became the first-ever Olympic champion in skateboarding here on Sunday.

The 22-year-old world champion recovered from an uncertain start in the men’s street final to claim victory with a total score of 37.18 points.

Horigome Yuto of Japan competes during the Tokyo 2020 men's street final of skateboarding at Ariake Urban Sports Park in Tokyo, Japan, July 25, 2021.

“I still cannot believe that I was competing at the Olympics. I was really happy that I could do my best skating in Koto City. The Olympics means so much to me,” said Horigome.

“When skateboarding officially became an Olympic sport at first I was not thinking about participating or anything. But I had built my way up to the Olympics with everything I have done, and I was really happy to get the gold medal this time.”

The turning point of Horigome’s performance came on his fourth trick attempt when he landed an exceptional nollie 270 noseslide that would earn him a competition-best score of 9.5 points out of 10 to erase the low score from his second run and put him into a lead that he would not relinquish.

“I remember thinking, ‘I cannot miss the fourth trick’. So I was very focused and believed in what I had done until then. I went for that trick and I landed it,” said Horigome.

Brazil’s early leader Kelvin Hoefler took silver on 36.15, with bronze going to Jagger Eaton of the United States on 35.35.

Eaton’s team-mate Nyjah Huston, pre-event favorite, finished seventh in the eight-man final on 26.10, failing to record a score for his final four tricks after making a strong start.

Unveiling the underlying meaning of the Tokyo Olympics medals

The Olympic Games has been known as the biggest sports competition on Earth, gathering the best athletes around the globe for unity, equality, and also for possession of those shiny medals.

The medals for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were launched in 2019, a dedicated design work of Junichi Kawanishi. The design was made to look simple, yet the detailed curves on the medals have a three-dimensional aspect and reflect lights at every angle.

The medals are 85mm in diameter and approximately 12mm thick, equivalent to The London 2012 Summer Olympics and Olympic Games Rio 2016 medals.

Medal weight
The weight of each type of medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics is different.
Gold medals weigh 556 grams, silver medals are 550 grams, and bronze medals are 450 grams.
The Japan Olympics committee has claimed that their gold and silver medals are the heaviest medals in the history of the Summer Olympics.

Made from e-waste
Japan also emphasises on using recycled metals from electronic waste, especially mobile phones, as the main component for medal production.
These e-wastes had been collected from April 2017 to March 2019.
Approximately 79,000 electronic items were delivered to local governments across the country, and more than 6.2 million mobile phones were sent to NTT Docomo, Japan’s biggest mobile phone network company.
Almost 5,000 medals were made out of this recycled waste.

“The reflection of light reaches various directions so, I hope that the reflected light from the medal would reach all directions when it is worn by an athlete. That is my intention,” said Kawanishi.
The rough stone-like texture of the medal that has been polished and shines with lights and sparkles represents the power of the athletes and the cheers of the public.
The distinctive circular design is to represent the globe and diversity, inspired by each athlete giving their best effort to become a representative of their country.
The medal design also indicates warm friendship of people around the world, uniting together for this Olympics Games.

Thailand launches Olympic campaign with wins in badminton, boxing and table tennis

24 July 2021: Badmintons world No 13 Busanan Ongbamrungphan and mixed doubles No 2 Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai began their campaigns in the Olympic Games TOKYO 2020 in style with comfortable wins at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza in Tokyo on Saturday.

In her Games debut, the Orleans Masters World Tour Super 100 winner Busanan had to overcome her nerves before outclassing unfancied Daniela Macias of Peru 21-4 21-9 in  31 minutes in the women’s singles group D.

In Group B of the mixed doubles, Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai vanquished Joshua Hurlburt-Yu and Josephine Wu of Canada 21-13 21-6 in just 30 minutes.

However, the women’s doubles team of Rawinda Prajongjai and Jongkolphan Kititharakul were less fortunate, losing to 2017 world champions Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan of China 6-21 10-21 in just 34 minutes in group B.

Busanan, 25 from Bangkok, admitted she had to suppress butterflies in her stomach to clear her first hurdle.

“This was the first Olympic match in my life. I couldn’t help feeling so excited,” said the singles gold medalist in the 2015 SEA Games. “But I used this match to test the shuttle speed and ventilation on court. I had no problem handling both aspects,” added Busanan, who will battle Kristin Kuuba of Estonia in the last round-robin match on Tuesday.

“I won’t take her for granted. She took Pornpavee Chochuwong (world No 10) to three games in the Swiss Open. You cannot overlook that,” said the former Thailand Masters winner, who is eyeing top spot in the group to earn a place in the final 16.

Former world No 1 Ratchanok Intanon kicks off her campaign on Sunday in a Group N round-robin match against Laura Sarosi of Hungary. Dechapol and Sapsiree play Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith of Great Britain, also on Sunday.

At the Kokugikan Arena, there was great news for Thai boxing fans when 2019 Asian Youth champion Baison Manikon and local hope Chatchai-Decha Butdee cruised through into the second round.

Baison, who two years ago switched from Muay Thai to boxing, relied on her rapid movement and powerful punches to upset 2014 World Championship silver medalist Saadat Dalgatova of the Russian Olympic Committee 4-1.

“I got off to a great start which really helped. I had some breathing problems in the third round but I hung in there,” said Baison, who called her parents for support and blessings the night before the match.

A big hurdle awaits the Thai in the second round on Tuesday when she will face 2016 and 2018 World Championships silver medalist Gu Hong of China.

In the men’s featherweight competition, Chatchai-Decha Butdee had no problem disposing of Peter McGrail of Great Britain 5-0. The 2015 Asian Championships gold medalist next takes on Mirco Jehiel Cuello of Argentina in the round of 16.

At the Sea Forest Waterway in Tokyo Bay, Siwakorn Wongpin and Nawamin Deenoi finished at bottom six in Heat 1 of the lightweight men’s double sculls after timing 7:07.05 minutes. They trailed  45.34 seconds behind heat winners Jonathan Rommelmann and Jason Osborne of Germany who crossed the finish line in 6:21.71. While the German pair move into the semi-finals, the Thai duo will try to make amends in the Repechage on Sunday.

“Everyone knows the feeling I have for this club, and I am delighted to have signed this new contract. It is an exciting time for Manchester United, we have built a squad with a good balance of youth and experienced players that are hungry for success,” said Solskjaer on the club’s official website.

“Manchester United wants to be winning the biggest and best trophies and that’s what we are all striving for. We have improved, both on and off the pitch, and that will continue over the coming seasons. I can’t wait to get out in front of a packed Old Trafford and get this campaign started,” he added.

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward highlighted that progress in his declarations.

Start of Thai Premier League football delayed until September

The new season of the Thai Premier League has been suspended from July 31 to September 3, due to the Covid-19 crisis in Thailand.

On Friday, Korawee Prissananantakul, the acting chief executive officer of Thai Premier League company, announced the suspension after discussions with other related parties. He, however, added that the season would end on May 21.

He said football teams from 13 “dark-red” provinces have been urged to find stadiums in safer provinces to serve as the home ground for September and October.

In case the pandemic situation in Thailand does not improve in the future, the organisers would hold “bubble” matches instead, Korawee added.
