The French Tennis Federation (FFT) has welcomed Rolex as a Premium Partner and the Official Timekeeper of Roland-Garros.

Within the framework of this new long-term partnership, the Swiss watchmaker also becomes an Official Partner of the FFT.

Having been a loyal partner to the tennis world for the last forty years, Rolex will become a Premium Partner of Roland-Garros in 2019 and the Official Timekeeper for the Roland-Garros tournament in Paris.

A press release said that the bond between Rolex and tennis is built upon a shared passion for excellence,

perfection, precision and elegance.

Already a partner of The Championships, Wimbledon in London since 1978, the Australian Open in Melbourne and the US Open in New York, Rolex now enjoys a close relationship with all four of the major tournaments on the international circuit, which together make up the Grand Slam.

The Geneva-based company is now directly associated with each of the world’s most prestigious tennis tournaments. It also sponsors some of the world’s top players, many of whom have triumphed on the famous clay court in Paris, such as Chris Evert, Björn Borg, Jim Courier, Justin Henin, Ana Ivanović, Li Na and Roger Federer.

As part of this new partnership, Rolex will enjoy extensive visibility inside the Roland-Garros stadium, which has recently undergone an impressive renovation. The company will also have its own hospitality area in the famous “Roland-Garros Village”.

Bernard Giudicelli, President of the French Tennis Federation said, “We are delighted to welcome Rolex, an iconic luxury brand, as a partner of the FFT and of Roland-Garros. Our association with this prestigious company, which is already a partner of the Rolex Paris Masters, will take on a whole new dimension in 2019 by

putting down roots in the heart of our illustrious competition in the Porte d’Auteuil.”

This long-term agreement will not only help develop the Roland-Garros brand worldwide, but will also benefit French tennis.

Arnaud Boetsch, Communication & Image Director, Rolex SA said “By becoming the Official Timekeeper of Roland-Garros, the tennis season’s major clay tournament, Rolex has definitively strengthened its ties with international tennis.

It is an honour and a pleasure for the brand to join forces with this prestigious Grand Slam tournament which, every year, writes another page in the history of tennis. This new association provides us with an additional opportunity to promote the discipline and support it with as much commitment and enthusiasm as we have over the last forty years.

As usual, Rolex has committed over the long term and we are delighted to further develop our collaboration with Roland-Garros and our shared vision.”

The Leicester City players and staff have paid their respects for the second straight night at the funeral in Bangkok of their chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who died in a fiery helicopter crash last Saturday.

The Leicester contingent flew to the Thai capital straight after scoring an emotional 1-0 Premier League win over Cardiff in South Wales, their first game after the crash at King Power Stadium that also killed two members of his staff, another passenger and the pilot.

They arrived in Bangkok on Sunday and went straight to the funeral at Wat Debsirindrawas Ratchaworawiharn.

The team must soon return to England in order to prepare for Saturday’s home game with Burnley.

The fixture at King Power will also give their supporters the chance to pay their respects to the late chairman and is sure to be another emotional occasion.

The funeral was also attended on Monday by Prime Minister Prayut Chanocha, as well as the Thailand team and their Serbian coach, Milovan Rajevac.

Djokovic top of the world after completing remarkable turnaround

Novak Djokovic’s return to the world number one spot, just five months after slumping to his lowest ranking in 12 years, leaves little doubt that he is one of the sport’s greats.

The Serb is back on the top of the pile for the first time in two years, at the end of a roller-coaster season for the 14-time major winner.

Djokovic, 31, underwent elbow surgery in January and slipped to 22nd in the world after a depressing quarter-final exit at Roland Garros in June, which left him briefly threatening to skip Wimbledon.

But he regrouped, romped to a fourth Wimbledon title the following month, a 32nd Masters in Cincinnati and then a third triumph at the US Open in September.

Despite his loss in the final of the Paris Masters to Karen Khachanov on Sunday — which ended a 22-match win streak — his record since the start of Wimbledon stands at 31-2.

“Reflecting on what I’ve been through in the last year, it’s quite a phenomenal achievement,” said Djokovic, who has knocked Rafael Nadal from the world top spot.

“I’m very, very happy and proud about it. Five months ago, it was highly improbable considering my ranking and the way I played and felt on the court.”

– ‘He has everything’ –

Djokovic is now just three behind Nadal’s total of 17 Grand Slams and six shy of Roger Federer’s record of 20.

But he has time on his side — Federer has already celebrated his 37th birthday while injury-plagued Nadal is 32.

Furthermore, Djokovic enjoys a lifetime 25-22 record over Federer and 27-25 against Nadal.

“Novak has everything to make records in this sport,” said Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro after losing to Djokovic in the US Open final.

Djokovic’s ability to thrive amongst the greats has never been in doubt, but the size of his heart often led to questions in his early days.

At Wimbledon in 2007, he retired with a back injury in the third set of his semi-final against Nadal.

He also quit at the 2006 and 2007 French Opens at the third round and quarter-final stages respectively, while at the 2009 Australian Open, where he was defending champion, he pulled out of his quarter-final with Andy Roddick citing heat exhaustion.

But nobody could question his courage at the 2012 Australian Open, when he beat Nadal in the longest Grand Slam final of all time, a draining 5hr 53min epic.

Djokovic captured the first of his majors in Melbourne in 2008, but it was three years before he added his second.

After leading Serbia to a maiden Davis Cup in 2010, he raced through the first half of 2011, building up a 48-1 winning run.

Only a semi-final defeat at the French Open prevented him from becoming just the third man to capture a calendar Grand Slam.

He finished 2011 with a 70-6 win-loss record, a haul of 10 tournament victories and the year-end number one spot for the first time.

– People’s champion? –

Back-to-back Australian Opens followed in 2012 and 2013, although three heart-breaking final defeats kept the French Open frustratingly out of reach until 2016, when his breakthrough win at Roland Garros allowed him to complete his career Slam.

In Paris that year, he also became the first player to break through the $100 million (87.8 million euro) prize money barrier.

Djokovic has also not been afraid to take chances and innovate his game, bringing in Boris Becker as part of his coaching team for the start of the 2014 season, although he has since reunited with long-time mentor Marian Vajda.

Off court, Djokovic married long-time girlfriend Jelena Ristic in July 2014. They have two children, a son Stefan and daughter Tara.

However, despite his achievements, Djokovic appears doomed never to be held in the same warm esteem as Federer and Nadal.

There are those who see something a little more calculating in the Djokovic make-up.

He was castigated during the 2015 French Open semi-finals for taking an eight-minute medical time-out after dropping the third set to Andy Murray, and at Indian Wells the next year he was roundly criticised for suggesting that men should “fight” to get more prize money than women.

“The stats are showing that we have much more spectators on the men’s tennis matches,” he said.

At Wimbledon this year, he hit out at some Centre Court fans for a perceived lack of respect while schedulers also felt his ire for exiling him to Court Two for a third round match.

Despite the doubts, the plaudits were generous on Monday.

“What Novak has achieved this season has to go down as one of the great sporting comebacks,” said ATP president Chris Kermode.

Nadal confirms season finished due to injury

Rafael Nadal confirmed on Monday he will miss the ATP Finals in London this month and that his season is over due to injury.

Nadal said he needed an operation on his right ankle and is also yet to recover from the abdominal problem that kept him out of the Paris Masters last week.

It means Novak Djokovic is guaranteed to end the year top of the world rankings while John Isner, the world number 10, comes into the field for the ATP Finals on Sunday.

“I am writing to you to signal the end of the season,” Nadal said. “It has been a complicated year, very good in terms of tennis when I was able to play and very bad in terms of injuries.”

The 32-year-old won a record-extending 11th French Open title in June and reached the semi-finals both at Wimbledon and the US Open.

He was forced to retire mid-way through his US Open semi-final with Juan Martin Del Potro in September due to pain in his right knee and has not been able to play a competitive match since.

“I have done everything possible to reach the end of the season in good condition, both in Paris and London, and I really wanted to play,” Nadal added.

On his ankle problem, he said: “It is true that we knew about it for a long time and from time to time it bothered me.

“Since the problem in my abdominal muscle also prevents me from playing in London, we have decided to take advantage of the moment … and avoid future problems.

“In this way I hope to be in full condition for the next season.”

Djokovic finished runner-up at the Paris Masters after losing to Karan Khachanov on Sunday but still returned to number one in the rankings for the first time since 2016.

Without Nadal, the Serb will be the clear favourite at the ATP Finals, for which the draw will be made later on Monday.

Sorgraw Petchyindee Academy out to make an even bigger name for himself on the ONE Super Series Stage

Following an impressive ONE Super Series debut back in June wherein he defeated French opponent Samy Sana via Unanimous Decision, Lumpinee Muay Thai World Champion Sorgraw Petchyindee Academy makes his much-awaited return to the ring to face off against one of the best in the world in kickboxing legend Giorgio “The Doctor” Petrosyan.

The massive clash of kickboxing stars is set for ONE: HEART OF THE LION on Friday, 9 November in Singapore, one of the biggest martial arts events of the year.

For Sorgraw, the stage was not always this big, however.

The Buriram native began training at just ten years old in a makeshift gym, and soon after began to compete professionally.

For the kid from Prakhon Chai, it was a way to help make some money for the family.

“I remember being so excited for my first fight,” Sorgraw shared on the ONE Championship website. “As soon as it was over, I wanted to do it again.”

After garnering success in the smaller circuits, Sorgraw decided to jump to a bigger stage and moved to Bangkok. Then just 15 years old, he was discovered by the famed Petchyindee Academy.

Since then, Petchyindee Academy has transformed Sorgraw in to the champion that he is, with a world title win at Lumpinee Stadium as well as the Thailand Championship, the WMC World Championship, and the Toyota Marathon.

The 25-year old knows that things would be quite different for him, had he not found his way to Petchyindee Academy.

“I’ll never forget where I came from and who helped me along the way, but it was Petchyindee that made me a champion,” he admitted.

Now, after making a name for himself in his home country, Sorgraw is working on making a name for himself on the biggest martial arts stage in the world.

“I always watched ONE Championship on TV, never thinking I would get an opportunity like that for myself,” he mentioned.

After making the most of his opportunity in his debut, Sorgraw now has the chance to make an even bigger name for himself as he faces a legend in Giorgio Petrosyan, heralded as the best kickboxer in the game today.

A win over Petrosyan will definitely put Sorgraw among the best of the best in the world.

“I am truly excited for the opportunity to share the cage with such a highly regarded fighter on such a big platform,” he stated.

Victorious Luksika aims at bigger win after Mumbai 125K title

Luksika Kumkhum has set her sights fixed on bigger prizes after capturing her first WTA 125K series title, the Mumbai Open, on Sunday.

The 25-year-old Thai No1 recovered from a sluggish first set to beat Irina Khromacheva of Russia 1-6 6-2 6-3 in one hour and 47 minutes and secure her biggest title to date.

The 125K event is not considered a real WTA title, however, and is comparable to the challenger category on the men’s tour.

The Chanthaburi-based Luksika says her next goal is to win a fifth-tier WTA International event, which offers minimum overall prizemoney of US$250,000.

“I hope this win won’t be my my last. And I hope I can win bigger,” Luksika told The Nation on Monday during a brief stopover in Thailand before leaving that night for her next tournament in China.

So far, Tamarine Tanasugarn is the only Thai to win a WTA tour event, in Hyderabad, India, in 2003.

Luksika, who has now reached a career-best world No80, is confident she has what it takes to emulate Tamarine. Her best WTA finishes so far are three semi-finals, including the Korea Open last year.

“Winning in India made me feel relieved that I was also able to win in a big event,” Luksika, who plans to enter more events in Europe and in the US next year as she is now in the top 80. “I still plan to play for at least five more years, so it should be long enough for me to win some more. It’s just a matter of time.

“I will basically play in Asia but will try to play in other parts of he world too. But I have to be selective about my plan as I don’t want to go so far only to lose in the first rounds.

“This is something I need to work on with my coach [Subin Srich-aen],” she added.

Luksika has two more events left this year: in Shenzen this week and Taiwan next week.

Helicopter tragedy will haunt me forever, Leicester’s Schmeichel says

sports November 05, 2018 17:11

By AFP

London – Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel says the helicopter crash that killed the club’s revered Thai owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha will haunt him forever after he witnessed the tragedy.

The 32-year-old Danish international — speaking after Leicester had beaten Cardiff on Saturday in their first match since the crash, which also killed four others — waved the helicopter off following the 1-1 draw with West Ham on October 27.

Moments later it came down, with Schmeichel reported to have been stopped by police as he ran towards the burning wreckage.

“I was on the pitch and I waved him off,” said Schmeichel, before he flew with teammates and coaching staff to Bangkok to attend Vichai’s funeral.

“I saw it all happen. It is something that will stay with me, unfortunately. It’s not a nice memory but I’ve had all the support that I need.

“The club has been great and everybody has received the support that they needed.”

Schmeichel joined Leicester in 2011, a year after Vichai bought the club, and was a pivotal figure in their fairytale Premier League title win in 2016.

He admitted to shaking as he warmed up in Cardiff before the game on Saturday.

The goalkeeper, who had the Thai national flag on his gloves, then joined his teammates and backroom staff around the centre circle to pay tribute to Vichai and the other victims.

“It was tough,” said Schmeichel, who had grief counselling during the week. “But we wanted to do it for the chairman and his family.

“We wanted to be together about this, because we’ve all lost what feels like a family member.

“Wes (Morgan the captain) said a bit, I said a bit. People had a lot to say because he meant so much to so many people. Everyone wanted to chip in.

“He brought everybody here and none of this — the memories, this family he’s built, the culture he’s instilled — would be here without him.”

Schmeichel, who faces another emotion-packed game this Saturday when Leicester play their first home match since the tragedy against Burnley, said Vichai transcended the traditional image of a Premier League club owner.

“When he took over this club it was in a pretty precarious situation, and to build what he has is quite amazing,” he said.

“It’s one thing building a team and a club that can perform on the pitch but we’re more proud of the family that he’s created and the feeling he’s instilled in everybody being welcome.

“It doesn’t matter who you are or what kind of position you have at the club. Whether it be player, staff, stadium staff, security — whatever it may be — everyone is equal and part of the family.”

Khachanov revels in ‘biggest achievement’ after Djokovic upset

sports November 05, 2018 05:11

By AFP

Russia’s Karen Khachanov capped an impressive year with the “biggest achievement” of his career as he stunned Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-4 in Sunday’s Paris Masters final.

Khachanov became the third different first-time winner of a Masters tournament this season — joining Juan Martin del Potro and John Isner — and will rise to a career-high ranking of 11th on Monday.

He denied Djokovic a fourth title in a row ahead of his return to world number one, and avenged a straight-sets loss to the Serb at Wimbledon in July.

“It’s one of my biggest titles so far, biggest achievement. And in general, it’s a breakthrough season,” said Khachanov, who also won the Kremlin Cup in Moscow last month.

“And this title, it’s a good year-end. And maybe I’m not crying, but still I’m really happy.”

“To finish the season like this is really a dream come true,” he added.

Going into the event, Khachanov had won just three of 19 encounters against players in the top 10 but claimed a fourth such scalp in a week after snapping Djokovic’s 22-match winning run.

He could yet take part at the ATP Tour Finals in London after earning a spot as the second alternate for the season-ending event.

“I’m happy with the way I’m playing. I mean, match by match I was increasing my level,” said the 22-year-old Khachanov.

“I think that’s what I showed against all the top 10 guys. I mean, today was Novak, the one who is No. 1 in the world. That’s the first thing.

“The second thing is after some tough loses against top guys like Rafa in New York, I think they push me to the limit and even to work more harder.

“And I saw that my level is there. I could play and compete on this level. So it was a matter of just a few points.”

Djokovic, who will reclaim the top ranking from Rafael Nadal for the first time in two years, made a strong start in his pursuit of a record-equalling 33rd Masters title as he broke for a 3-1 lead in the opening set.

– Ruthless Khachanov –

But world number 18 Khachanov, unbeaten in three previous finals, hit back in the very next game as Djokovic dragged a forehand into the tramlines, down break point.

The unseeded Russian then broke Djokovic for a 6-5 lead, momentarily faltering as he tried to serve out for the set before calmly regrouping to surge ahead.

Djokovic overcame Roger Federer in an energy-sapping classic that lasted over three hours in Saturday’s semi-finals, and the Serb began to look weary as he dropped serve to a fall behind early in the second set.

The 1.98m Khachanov secured a break for 2-1 with a crunching backhand pass down the line that Djokovic could only net on the half-volley.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion showed trademark resilience to fend off three break points while trailing 4-2, but Khachanov displayed steely composure to seal a memorable victory after an hour and 38 minutes.

“Karen played really well and he deserved to win that match,” said Djokovic, who admitted he had struggled to fully recover after his gruelling showdown with Federer less than 24 hours earlier.

“I don’t want to talk about that. I want to talk about how well he (Khachanov) played all week.

“All the credit to him. He deserves it. He’s a young player up and coming. But already established player, top player. And he showed great quality today and he showed why we’re going to see a lot of him in the future.”

Khachanov is the first Russian to win a Masters title since Nikolay Davydenko in 2009.

Grief-strickening Leicester City players, manager and other representatives attended the funeral rite of their highly revered owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprapha in Bangkok , less than 20 hours after they beat Cardiff in the Saturday’s Premier League.

Manager Claude Puel led 11 players including striker Jamie Vardy, captain Wes Morgan, goalkeeper Kasper Schmichel, defenders Harry Maguire and Christian Fuchs, midfilder Wilfred Ndidi  and Japanese Shinji Okazaki to an urgent trip to Thailand right after they won the away game 1-0.

They arrived in late afternoon and went straight to join the recitation ceremony at Debsirindrawas Temple to hounor the club’s chairman, one of the five victims in a helicopter accident at the King Power Stadium last week.

The LCFC players and representatives appeared solemn and sorrowful during the funeral rite presided over by Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari. The royal sponsored bathing ceremony was performed on Saturday and had been attended by many elites in the Kingdom.

The former Premier League champions will spend a night and are due to return to UK on Monday to prepare for their next game against Burnley on Saturday.
