LeBron James becomes NBA’s all-time leading scorer

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer on Tuesday, setting the new mark with a fadeaway jumpshot late in the third quarter of a home game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

James, who entered the game needing 36 points to break Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 38,387, sent the sold-out crowd into a frenzy when the shot splashed through the net to etch his name into the history books.

Lakers great Abdul-Jabbar, who took the title from Wilt Chamberlain with his signature skyhook on April 5, 1984, sat courtside at Tuesday’s game.

Play was stopped to recognize the achievement and to let James address the crowd.

“I just want to say thank you to the Laker faithful, you guys are one of a kind,” James said.

“To be able to be in the presence of such a legend as Kareem is unbelievable, it’s very humbling. Please give a standing ovation to ‘The Captain.'”

Thai Honda announces 2023 motorsport plan, emphasising development of Thai racers

With the concept of “Don’t Limit Your Challenges, Let’s Challenge Your Limit,” the company is planning to enhance Thai racers’ skills in order to qualify for the 2025 MotoGP World Championship said President of Thai Honda Shigeto Kimura.

Two Thai racers will compete in the Moto2 and Moto3 Thailand Grand Prix this year, he added, including Somkiat “Kong” Chantra and Tatchakorn “Kong” Buasri.

“Somkiat aims to finish in the top 4 Moto2 World Championship, and  Tatchakorn, who was a stellar rookie, will compete in 4 circuits of Moto3 World Championship,” he said. 

Kimura noted that Honda is still training Thai athletes to perform at the highest level internationally.

Man City referred to commission over alleged financial rule breaches

The Premier League has referred Manchester City to an independent commission over more than 100 alleged breaches of finance rules since the club were acquired by the Abu Dhabi-based City Football Group.

League rules state that charges such as those faced by City could, if proved, result in a club being expelled from the Premier League in the worst-case scenario.
 

Offending clubs may alternately be deducted points, fined, or reprimanded.

City’s alleged breaches stretch from the 2009-10 season to the 2017-18 campaign, the league said on Monday.

The club, who were acquired by City Football Group in 2008, are also charged with failing to cooperate with and assist the Premier League in its investigation, which was launched in December 2018.

City are alleged to have breached rules relating to the provision of accurate financial information, “in particular with respect to its revenue (including sponsorship revenue), its related parties and its operating costs,” the league said.

The club, who have won the Premier League title six times since the Abu Dhabi takeover, said they were surprised by the league’s “issuing of these alleged breaches”.

“The club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position,” City added.

The charges stem from a Premier League investigation into City’s financial dealings launched four years ago, after the release of a tranche of “Football Leaks” documents obtained by the German publication Der Spiegel and reviewed by Reuters.

City were subsequently banned from the Champions League by European governing body UEFA for two years, but successfully appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which overturned the ban in 2020.

The club were fined 30 million euros ($32.28 million) by UEFA, which CAS reduced to 10 million euros.

In addition to the charges relating to the club’s revenue and operating costs, City are also alleged to have not fully disclosed managerial remuneration from the 2009-10 to 2012-13 seasons, when Roberto Mancini was manager.

The club are also charged with failing to comply with Premier League’s rules requiring clubs to follow UEFA’s financial fair play (FFP) regulations from the 2013-14 to 2017-18 seasons and failing to follow the Premier League’s rules on profit and sustainability from the 2015-16 to 2017-18 seasons.

FFP regulations are designed to stop clubs running up big losses through spending on players. They also ensure sponsorship deals are based on their real market value and are genuine commercial agreements — and not ways for owners to pump cash into a club to get around the rules.

“The members of the Commission will be appointed by the independent Chair of the Premier League Judicial Panel,” the Premier League said in a statement.

“The proceedings before the Commission will… be confidential and heard in private.

“The Premier League will be making no further comment in respect of this matter until further notice.”

Honda pledges to end traffic fatalities by 2050

In an effort to improve the abilities of its safety driving instructors and bring a fatality rate from road accidents to zero by 2050, Honda Motor Group launched the Asia-Oceania Honda Safety Instructor Competition 2023.

The first Asia-Oceania Honda Safety Instructor Competition 2023 took place during February 2 – 4 at Honda Safety Riding Park Phuket, featuring car and motorcycle competitions. 
 

There are three stages for Motorcyclists namely Slalom, Low-Speed Balance, and Braking, while the automobile competition includes Figure Driving, Slippery Road Driving and Slalom stages.

Chief Officer for Regional Operations (Asia & Oceania) of Honda Motor Masayuki Igarashi said that based on the concept of “Safety Road for Everyone,” the company continues to be committed to promoting road safety. 

“The company has organised the Asia-Oceania Honda Safety Instructor Competition 2023 in a bid to accomplish its goal, with more than 100 trainers participating in this competition,” he added. 

Masayuki said that the competition is supported by its subsidiaries in 12 countries namely Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, South Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Shigeto Kimura, president of Thai Honda Co, said Honda has been promoting road safety for the past 34 years by, for example, establishing four centres for safety driving, and training its instructors in safe driving.

F1 champions Red Bull unveil 2023 car, announce partnership with Ford at NYC launch event

Formula One world champions Red Bull took their season launch to the United States on Friday (February 3, 2023) with a spray of pyrotechnics in front of a rapt, standing room-only Manhattan crowd as fans braved the bitter cold outside.

“It’s a great feel, you know, it looks good, but you want to have a car that suits your driving style, and you are able to do be confident with and be able to take the maximum out of it. It’s very important,” said Red Bull Racing Driver Checo (Sergio) Perez.
 

The event also served as the unveiling of a new partnership with the Ford Motor Company, which will partner Red Bull Powertrains, the company established to build engines for Red Bull, in a show of confidence for the sport’s U.S. popularity.

Ford will return to Formula One with the reigning champions in 2026 after an absence of more than 20 years.

Formula One will have a new power unit from 2026 using 100% sustainable fuels and a greater electrical component.

Red Bull are currently using V6 turbo hybrid engines made by former partner Honda in Japan and last year called off talks with Porsche.

Las Vegas will join Austin and Miami as the third race in the United States in the 2023 calendar as F1 looks to make further inroads into the lucrative market.

Ten Hag not commenting after Greenwood’s charges dropped

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag hasn’t given any indication about striker Mason Greenwood’s future at the Premier League side.

Greenwood was suspended by the club in January last year when accusations against him surfaced on social media, before he was charged with attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault in October.
 

All of those criminal charges against him were subsequently dropped by police and prosecutors on Thursday (February 2).

United released a brief statement following the news saying the club would “conduct its own process before determining next steps”, and Ten Hag pointed to the statement when asked about Greenwood during Friday’s (February 3) press conference.

“I can’t say anything about it. I refer to the statement of the club, and in this moment, I can’t add anything,” Ten Hag said.

Meanwhile, United’s deadline day loan signing Marcel Sabitzer is ready to play and could be handed his debut against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday (February 4).

The midfielder, who joined from Bayern Munich until the end of the season, became a late target for United after Christian Eriksen was ruled out because of an ankle injury that could sideline him until early May.

“He did only one session but you can see he’s a very fit player and I didn’t have different expectations coming from Bayern Munich,” Ten Hag told reporters. “I think he is ready to play.

“I think he’s a really smart player and I think we gave him some guidance but he knows what to do, he knows the job.”

With United’s fine recent form propelling them back up the league table and into the top four, Ten Hag was handed a further boost this week when French defender Raphael Varane, who has suffered several injury setbacks during his time in England, announced his retirement from international football aged 29.

“For United, I think it’s good news,” Ten Hag said. “With his nation it is incredible what he achieved, big respect and I am happy he puts all his energy and experience into this team.

Thai champ unfazed by Cambodian move to replace Muay Thai with local martial art

Muay Thai legend Buakaw Banchamek on Friday asked Thais not to worry about Cambodia’s move to refer to kickboxing as “Kun Khmer”, asserting that Thailand’s martial art is number one.

Cambodia, which would host this year’s Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, sparked controversy when it replaced Muay Thai with Kun Khmer as one of the disciplines.

The National Olympic Committee of Thailand announced on Tuesday that no Thai athletes would compete in kickboxing at the regional games, hosted by Phnom Penh from May 5-17.

“It is their [Cambodia] right,” Buakaw said. “We do not have to worry about it because we are paying more attention to the Olympic level.”

He also denied Cambodian netizens’ claims that he has Cambodian lineage, saying that he was indeed an original Thai person.

Buakaw’s remark is in line with Banchamek Gym’s Facebook post on Thursday, saying he did not have any problem with Kun Khmer or Cambodian netizens.

However, the page also asked Cambodian boxing agencies to pay the remaining 2.2 million baht for hiring Buakaw to participate in recent World Fight Tournament in Cambodia.

Earlier on Thursday, Srey Chanthorn, honorary vice president of the Khmer Boxing Federation, announced that he would give a villa, a car and additional money for 10 years to any Cambodian boxer who could beat Buakaw.

Man United’s Greenwood has all charges dropped

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has had all criminal charges against him dropped, police and prosecutors said on Thursday (February 2).

Greenwood, who was suspended by United in January 2022 when accusations against him surfaced on social media, was charged with attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault last October.

“A decision has been made to discontinue prosecution in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors,” the Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement naming Greenwood.

10K running race to be held at heart of Bangkok

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), Athletic Association of Thailand (AAT), and Kaotajai Association, and Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) was signed on Wednesday (February 1) in a bid to organise Kaotajai 10K Thailand Championship 2023, with the aim to promote physical activities amongst Thais.

Being set to take place on January 19 in Bangkok, the starting and finishing locations of the “Kaotajai 10K Thailand Championship” running competition are the same – Suphachalasai Stadium. Joining runners will pass the Siam shopping centre and other well-known tourist attractions during running.
 

The cost for a 5 KM race is 350 baht, while a 10 KM race is 450 baht.

Deputy Public Health Minister Satit Pitutacha extended an invitation to runners across the country to join the event, saying that Kaotajai 10K Thailand Championship 2023 was created to promote physical activities and more exercises amongst Thais. 

Dr Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai, Kaotajai ’s president, added the tournament was held in an effort to popularise the Kaotajai association as well as to encourage people to get more exercise. 

Meanwhile, Supreda Adulyanon, Manager of ThaiHealth, said that owing to the increase in diseases caused by behavioural factors, ThaiHealth has been in collaboration with its partners to solve this problem. 

Apart from promoting physical activity and preventing noncommunicable diseases, the 10K Thailand Championship will result in a reduction of government expenses, he added. 

TAT’s Deputy Governor for Domestic Marketing Thapanee Kiatphaibool said that the competition, which will be held in the middle of Bangkok, will bolster the image of the city as it allows runners to pass through several astonishing destinations of the capital. 

AAT told that technical assistance such as records and other statistics accumulation will be provided for participating runners throughout the race.
