Viva Forever! Spice Girls reveal 2019 UK reunion tour

London

Say You’ll Be There: Best-selling 90s girl band the Spice Girls promise to give fans what they really, really want on a UK reunion tour next year.

The band — minus pop star-turned-fashion designer Victoria Beckham — released details of a comeback tour, which will see them play Wembley Stadium, Britain’s biggest venue.

In a video shared on the band’s newly created Twitter account, the four remaining members staged a mock news broadcast to confirm rumours of the tour.

Beckham, also known as Posh Spice, later posted a photo of the foursome on social media alongside a statement.

“I won’t be joining my girls on stage again but being in the Spice Girls was a hugely important part of my life and I wish my girls so much love and fun as they go back on tour,” she wrote on Instagram.

The pop phenomenon’s announcement sparked celebration from fans on social media, including from British singer Adele who shared a throwback childhood photo of herself posing excitedly in front of magazine posters of the band on her bedroom wall.

“This is how I feel right now! I am ready,” she added on Instagram.

The band’s official Twitter account, which promised a “new generation of girl power” was flooded with a frenzy of posts from nostalgic fans.

“The Spice Girls performing in my home town! I need to sit down. I can’t breathe!!” tweeted Wez from Sunderland.

“I’m already packing my Union Jack dress and platform shoes, see you there,” another fan, Vicky, added.

Jessica Morgan joked on Twitter: “My life depends on successfully purchasing a Spice Girls ticket.”

The tour will take in six British cities next year, including Manchester on June 1, the Scottish capital Edinburgh a week later and culminating at Wembley on June 15.

Ahead of the announcement, Melanie Brown (also known as Mel B and Scary Spice) left the door open to Beckham’s possible involvement.

“It’s just the four of us that are fully confirmed, but you know, Vic might join us at some point,” she told Britain’s ITV network.

“She’s got a full-on life with all of her work commitments and her fashion line and her kids, so, she’s just kind of not committing just yet,” Brown added.

The group stormed to worldwide fame in 1996 after the release of their first single “Wannabe”, spreading their message of girl power, eventually going on to sell 85 million albums worldwide.

Only two of their 11 singles failed to reach number one on the British charts, while their first three singles all hit the US top five.

The five-piece split in 2000 but reunited for a world tour in 2007.

They got together again to perform at the London 2012 Olympics closing ceremony and also collaborated then for the launch of the Spice Girls musical “Viva Forever!”.

An expected comeback in 2016 with three bandmates failed to materialise.

Tickets for the new tour will go on sale on Saturday.

Maroon 5 due back in March

By The Nation

Three-time Grammy-winning band Maroon 5 will be back in Thailand on March 9 as their “Red Pill Blues World Tour” rolls into Impact Challenger Hall 1.

The American pop-rock band will be hitting Tokyo, Seoul and Singapore before reaching Bangkok, playing material from their sixth studio album, last year’s “Red Pill Blues”.

The title alludes to the choice offered in the 1999 sci-fi film “The Matrix” between a red pill and blue pill.

The album got mixed reviews from critics but nevertheless rose to No 2 on the US Billboard 200 chart, driven by the singles “What Lovers Do”, “Wait” and “Girls Like You”.

The first of those tracks features American R&B singer SZA and the second Cardi B. It was a Billboard No 1 – a fourth chart-topper for Maroon 5 and a third for Cardi B.

The Los Angeles-based band have achieved three Grammy Awards and become “the most successful group in the history of the Billboard Hot 100” with 12 Top 10 entries. They’ve earned 20 Top 40 hits, the only band to ever do so, and sold 36 million albums and 48 million singles. They’ve earned gold and platinum certifications in more than 35 countries.

Funny thing happened on the way to the Jim Jefferies show

Australian stand-up comedian, political commentator, actor and writer Jim Jefferies is bringing his “The Night Talker Tour” to Thailand, with a show set for Bangkok’s Scala Theatre on January 18.

The 41-year-old Sydney-born wordsmith – one of the hottest stand-up-comedy draws on the planet – has multiple side-splitting videos on YouTube. He hosts cable network Comedy Central’s late-late-night “Jim Jefferies Show”, tackling the news of the day with candour, insight and a unique viewpoint.

His third Netflix stand-up special, “This is Me Now”, was just released, his seventh in eight years. In this one, he opens up about the challenges of being a single father and about the weirdest gig he’s ever played.

Jefferies’ earlier hard-hitting material on America’s gun-control laws is widely regarded as one of the greatest pieces of stand-up ever recorded.

And then there was the time in 2007 when a stage-invading heckler punched him at the Manchester Comedy Store. That too was captured on video and became one of YouTube’s earliest viral videos, quickly garnering two million views.

US singer Camila Cabello swept the MTV Europe Music Awards on Sunday, winning best song with her hit “Havana” as well as best artist and best video.

“This year has been the best of my life,” the 21-year-old Cuban native said at the event in Bilbao, northern Spain.

Cabello had opened the show hosted by American actress and singer Hailee Steinfeld with a rendition of her Latin-influenced “Havana”.

She is fresh from winning prestigious prizes at the MTV Video Music Awards in August — artist of the year and video of the year — after her album “Camila” reached the top of US charts in January.

The audio version of “Havana”, which features rapper Young Thug, has had more than 1.3 billion hits on YouTube.

The former member of the band Fifth Harmony was also named best pop artist at last year’s MTV Europe Music Awards.

Cabello had six nominations, followed by five each for singer Ariana Grande and rapper Post Malone and Canadian artist Drake and Britain’s Dua Lipa with four.

With two awards — for best hip hop artist and best look — US rapper Nicki Minaj held her own, making two appearances on stage, with French DJ David Guetta and US singer Jason Derulo.

Dua Lipa won best pop artist, while the US group Panic! at the Disco won best alternative artist and Marshmello snagged best electro artist.

Canadian singer Shawn Mendes, winner of three prizes in 2017, won best live artist.

US veteran Janet Jackson was crowned a “global icon”, a title previously awarded to U2, Queen, Whitney Houston and Eminem.

Accepting the award, she addressed abused women, saying: “I am one of those women, women who have been gagged both literally and emotionally, women who have been abused, women who have been intimidated, women who have lived in fear.”

She added: “I stand with you. You are my sisters.”

Created in 1994, the MTV EMA are one of two major shows organised by MTV, with its Video Music Awards held in the United States since 1984.

The Impossibles bow out with a remarkable and generous show of talent, emotion and love

The three surviving original members of the Impossibles got together on Tuesday for the legendary band’s final concert after more than five decades in the business.

Setha Sirachaya, Winai Bandurak and Pichai Thongniam – who are all in their early 70s – reunited onstage for the last time as “The Im”, as the muchloved band are known to their fans.

According to frontman Setha, the trio will no longer perform under the band’s name, even it they share the same stage again in the future. They’re getting a bit ripe in age, he said, and it’s time to disband.

But the three senior singers greatly impressed the audience throughout their “End of the Im” concert at the Royal Paragon Hall, not only with highquality performances but also their undiminished stamina. They relied on no guest singers during the show, which lasted more than three hours.

They performed as a trio and took turns on solos for almost the entire concert, apart from an interview by the concert’s producer, Ketsepsawat Palakawong “Na Nake” Na Ayudhya, a 15-minute intermission and a brief routine by folk singers the Three Uncles.

The concert opened with the “Love’s Theme” overture performed by the band Ton Siang, which includes a string troupe and a pianist, in addition to other musicians and chorus singers.

The band, which has worked with the Impossibles over the past decade, also provided musical backup throughout the concert.

During the overture, a video presentation depicted all the transformations the members have undergone, including those now deceased, from young age to old age. It was amusing to watch the visual changes.

Setha, Winai and Pichai appeared on stage in allwhite suits, with Winai wearing a wig resembling his young self’s afro hairdo. They began with their hit “Nao Nua” (“Feeling Cold”), with Setha singing, Winai playing guitar and Pichai the bass guitar.

For the rest of the show, they performed over 30 more songs – most of them hits from their heyday. On most tracks, the trio sang in harmony, with Setha taking the lead.

Winai was the lead singer on a few of the band’s hit numbers, including “Koy Nong” (“Waiting for You”) and “Nai Wa Ja Jam” (“You Don’t Remember”). Pichai did the main vocal on “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by American legend Elvis Presley.

Following the first set, the trio came back onstage in suits with bright colours – Pichai in all pink, Setha all green and Winai all blue. They sang “Nueng Nai Duangjai” (“Only One in My Heart”), “Thale Mai Koey Lab” (“The Sea Never Sleeps”) and international hits from the band’s heyday, “Sound of Silence” and “Put Your Head on My Shoulder”.

During this section, Setha came down from the stage to meet in person with his fans. He sang four songs while walking along the main aisle, greeting and hugging the fans, receiving their flowers, and having his photos taken with them.

Despite their age, the trio still sang with passion and energy. In particular, Setha’s vocal quality remained impressive while crooning. Certainly, they could not be expected to perform as they did in their youth.

The audience, mainly middle-aged and retirees, sang along to their favourite songs, remembering all the lyrics well. During their “special” songs, many also switched on their phone’s flashlight in support of the singers, making an impressive sea of lights.

Among some 2,000 audience members were business executives, senior officials, well-known entertainers of yesteryear and veteran actors, including Setha’s wife Aranya Namwong.

The Impossibles, formed in 1966, originally had six members and later were joined by musical talents who were to become big names in the industry later in life.

These include the late singer and music-company executive Rewat Buddhinan and trumpeter Yongyut Meesang, who played his horn at the band’s final concert on Tuesday night.  Three of the original members have since passed away – Prajin Songpao, Sittiporn Amornpan and Anusorn Pattanakul.

The surviving members mentioned their late colleagues as old photos of them together in younger days were displayed on a large screen behind them. The trio also joked about their old age and resultant forgetfulness, although their health problems are indeed worrying.

Winai fell seriously ill two years ago and underwent kidney dialysis for four months. He joked that he thought of ending up as the next band member to “leave this world”, and at one point he got choked up with emotions while recounting his ordeal.

After the intermission, the trio came back for the final tunes of the night. Together they performed “O Rak” (“Oh Love”) – the number that Setha said brought him to fame. He became overwhelmed by emotion, which interrupted his singing, but the two others immediately filled his place to carry on the show.

Setha rejoined after composing himself amid much supportive applause from the audience.

In the finale, the trio performed their all-time hits “Chua Nit Nirundon” (“For Eternity”) and “Pen Pai Mai Dai” (“It’s Impossible”).

For many fans of “The Im”, this was a night to remember. The band they love may no longer exist henceforth, but the memories will be forever in their hearts.

Nu’est W show what’s new

THE NATION

The Korean quartet ‘in waiting’ for the fifth member’s return didn’t actually need him in Bangkok

South Korean quartet Nu’est W pulled off a hugely successful Thailand comeback with “Double U – Encore in Bangkok” at the Thunder Dome last Saturday, despite the fact that they were only here in April.

Nu’est W is part of the Nu’est universe, so to speak, and they’ve become more famous since the second season of “Produce 101”, the reality TV talent show back in their homeland.

As a result, their previous albums have been selling better than ever, with many of the tracks climbing the Korean music charts.

The main draw is music presented in a fresh style, packaged behind a band name that breaks down as “new, established, style and tempo”.

At the outset they were considered sensational power rookies with their techno hip-hop and urban electro sound mingled with dubstep. More recently they’ve adopted other genres, including ballads and electro R&B.

Core Nu’est W members JR, Aron, Baekho and Ren were back but Minhyun is jumping ship to join Wanna One for their final year of operations. The “W” stands for “wait” because they’re waiting for Minhyun’s return, expected next year.

The diminished lineup on Saturday nevertheless delighted the Thai fans, who were in their screaming, shrieking glory.

The four boys took the stage dressed all in black under white suit jackets and immediately hit their stride with “Where You At” from the debut mini-album “W, Here”. The song was powerfully appealing thanks to strong vocals and rapping.

The band vaulted on with “Deja vu”, “Overcome” and “Love Paint”, all of which has the ladies swooning and waving their red light sticks bearing the letter W.

“Deja vu”, featuring a Latin pop rhythm and highpitched chorus, comes from the second mini-album, “Who, You”, and is made for moving bodies.

After a break the guys said hello and other stuff in Thai, including a marvellous “Khid thueng jang loey” from JR and “Mai jer kan nan” from Baekho. Aron shouted, “Rak na khrub!” and made the Korean love gesture saranghaeyo.

Then it was on to “Beautiful Ghost” from the third mini-album, “Sleeping Talking”, with great choreography and fiery special effects, and the temperature kept rising with “Climax”, “Face” and “Action” from their debut full-length album, “Re:Birth”.

As is usual with Korean pop groups, the intermission was used to tell their story. That segued into solo routines by JR, who rapped through “With”, and Aron, who crooned “Good Love”.

The others then rejoined them at centre stage for “Look”, “Love without Love” and “Give Me A Shoulder”, to which the audience was obliged to sing along.

Ren next did a turn at the piano and hopped up to show off his dance moves on “Paradise”, while Baekho unleashed the emotions for the gentle pop ballad “Thankful for You”.

The quartet reassembled in pastel blue suits for the jazzy ballad “Polaris”, highlighted by Ren’s quavering voice and a galaxy of lights spreading over the hall. That was followed by the heartfelt ballads “Good Bye Bye”, “Onekis2” and “Hello” as the lads sat on a propeller-driven turntable stage that rose up and moved around.

The concert proper ended with “My Beautiful”, another ballad designed to showcase their singing and rapping.

Prior to the encore, the W-shaped screens showed behind-the-scenes planning for it, which involved choosing just the right Thai song to sing as a surprise and practising the lyrics in Thai.

The one they picked was Ton Thanasit’s “Roo Yung” and the Koreans did a lovely job of it, but the bigger surprise was seeing them all loaded into individual carts to be rolled around the hall, bringing them very close to the fans. All the while they were throwing colourful plastic balls around.

The sweet closer to the show was a most appreciatively delivered and received “Thank You”.

Dutch DJ duo Anotr will be jetting in from Amsterdam next week for their debut show in Thailand at Glow Nightclub on Sukhumvit Soi 23 on November 10.

The duo, consisting of 21 year olds Jesse van der Heijden and Oguzhan Guney, are the house-meets-techhouse revelations of their time. After hours and hours of hard work and tweaks to reach undisputed perfection, the first eye-opening works of the Amsterdam-based youngsters sparked the interest of record label Armada Music, subsequently leading to the release of summer anthem “Strobe” on Defected records breakout label DFTD in early October 2015.

Despite their tender age, Anotr have played on summer festival hotspot Ibiza, rewarded their fans with multiple DJ performances during Europe’s main dance music conference Amsterdam Dance Event, and graced plenty more internationally acclaimed clubs, venues, and festivals with their distinctive sound, and unmatched, onstage energy.

With plenty of remixes, EPs, and experimental compositions looming on the horizon, the vast expansion of Anotr’s foothold in electronic music territory had already begun.

Tickets are Bt450 available at the door and the pair start spinning at 9.
