Singer Sinead O’Connor converts to Islam

music October 26, 2018 15:44

By Agence France-Presse
London

Outspoken Irish singer Sinead O’Connor has announced she has converted to Islam and changed her name to Shuhada.

Having adopted the name Magda Davitt last year, the 51-year-old is now called Shuhada Davitt.

She also changed her Twitter avatar to a black-and-white image of the Nike Swoosh logo and the slogan: “Wear a hijab. Just do it.”

“This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim. This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey,” she tweeted.

“All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant. I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada.”

Her Twitter account says the singer now lives in “Direland”.

O’Connor’s 1990 hit “Nothing Compares 2 U” became a global hit, with her haunting voice, shaved head and single-tone outfits turning her into both an enigmatic and captivating figure.

But her career began to falter after she tore up a picture of the late Pope John Paul II while appearing as a musical guest on US television in 1992.

She said she was protesting sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, but her gesture was roundly condemned in the media and she was eventually forced to apologise.

Yet her fight against the Catholic Church continued, and in 1999 O’Connor was ordained as a priest by a breakaway church based in the French city of Lourdes.

Catholicism does not sanction priesthood for women.

O’Connor told Billboard magazine in 2014 that she was still ordained but had stepped away from priesthood because “I’m not interested in causing more trouble than I already am”.

Ed Sheeran confirms return to Bangkok

music October 26, 2018 01:00

By THE NATION

Global megastar Ed Sheeran has announced the first batch of new stadium headline shows for his return to Asia in April and May, and will perform at Songdo Moonlight Festival Park in South Korea on April 21, at the Singapore National Stadium on April 26 and at Bangkok’s Rajamangala National Stadium on April 28. More cities and dates will be announced soon.

Sheeran and his team are once again taking a strict stance against anyone using unethical secondary ticketing sites and to put a stop to the secondary ticketing market, absurd prices and fan ripoffs, the tickets are sold “personalised,” which means that the name of the ticket purchaser is printed on the tickets. Upon arrival at the concert venue, the purchaser may be required to provide a valid photo ID that matches the name on the ticket(s) to gain admission. The promoters urge all customers to only use the official ticket sites listed at Edsheeran.com.

Currently on the North American leg of his global “Divide” stadium tour, Sheeran is not only one of the most successful recording acts ever, but one of the world’s most indemand live acts. On this summer’s UK run, Ed played to over 1.1 million people, including four nights at London’s Wembley Stadium, marking the biggestever solo tour [without a band] that the UK has ever seen!

A songwriter of a generation, Sheeran has continued to dominate charts across the globe since the release of his “Divide” album last year. With over 15.5 million copies sold worldwide to date, the album has spawned Ed’s hit singles “Shape of You” (the third biggestselling single of all time in the UK and most-streamed track on Spotify, ever), “Castle on the Hill”, “Galway Girl”, the 2017 UK Christmas Number 1 “Perfect” and “Happier”. Sheeran released his 10 million-selling debut album  “+” (“Plus”) in 2011, which featured the UK’s biggest-selling debut track of that year “The A Team”. In 2014, he returned with his critically acclaimed second LP “x” (“Multiply”) featuring his global smash “Thinking Out Loud”.

For the Bangkok concert, ticket prices start at Bt2,000 and go on sale at 10am local time on December 1 at all ThaiTicketMajor outlets or via http://www.ThaiTicketMajor.com. Call (02) 262 3838.

A British producer releases a song and music video dedicated to those involved in the rescue of the Mu Pa boys

As the members of the Mu Pa (Wild Boars) football academy and team and their coach were visiting Prime Minister Prayut Chanocha on Tuesday, British executive producer Will Robinson was calling attention to their rescue with the release of “Heroes of Thailand”, a song and music video he produced to honour the sacrifice and efforts of the divers, rescue workers, officials and volunteers who rescued the 12 young footballers and their coach from the Tham Luang cave in Tham LuangKhun Nam Nang Non Forest Park, Chiang Rai in July.

Robinson records the sound of the salo.

Robinson, the chief executive of Hong Kong-based record label Tune Asia, has more than 25 years of experience in the music industry and is also a talented composer and songwriter.

He penned the full-length version of “Glory Glory Man United” in 2008 featuring Korean violinist Jenny Bae. He also wrote “Red is the Man” to mark Sir Alex Ferguson’s 25th anniversary at Old Trafford and “Chico is the Man” for Mexican football star Javier Hernandez, which saw him collaborate with Jose Feliciano and Daniel Ryan.

Will Robinson during the shooting of the music video.

“I co-wrote a song for Bryan Robson, former manager of the Thai national football team and former captain of Manchester United and England football team called “Hero” with British composer Daniel Ryan about seven years ago. The song has a strong melody and after watching the story of the heroic rescue at Tham Luang cave, I thought this song would make a nice tribute to all the volunteers, rescue workers, divers and others who risked their lives to help in this rescue mission that gripped the whole world,” he says.

“I changed the lyrics and the story of the song and had it translated to the northern Thai dialect,” says Robinson, who divides his time between recording studios in Hong Kong, Thailand and the UK.

Ronnarong Khampha is a singer of “Heroes of Thailand”.

“I would like thank to Thai Navy Seals, Thai PBS, ITV England and some of the divers who provided some of the footage for the music video and gave permission to use their photographs.”

“Heroes of Thailand” was recorded in Manchester, London, Singapore and Bangkok and features vocalist Ronnarong Khampha, a Lanna dancer and actor from Phayao, and several traditional Thai instruments including the salo, a northern Thai musical instrument made from a coconut shell, and the khlui, a traditional Thai duct flute made from bamboo.

“I was fortunate to meet Ronnarong. He’s a multi-talented artist – a choreographer, dancer and singer and was recommended by Professor Waewdao Sirisook from Chiang Mai University,” says the 51-year-old Briton.

Ronnarong says he is honoured and proud to be part of this charitable project as it gave him the opportunity to also share the Lanna art and culture through music.

“The lyrics convey the message of gratitude to all local and international volunteers who were involved in the rescue of the footballers and their coach. Every person is a hero,” he adds.

Ronnarong Khampha, Will Robinson, and Kanchorn Jiamram, director of Childlife Mae Sai (Baan Nana), Chiang Rai

“Heroes of Thailand” can be downloaded on iTunes on https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/heroesofthailandfeatronnarongkhamphasingle/1433606438 and on all other major digital retailers and streaming services.

Proceeds from all downloads and streaming sales of this song will be donated to Childlife Mae Sai (Baan Nana), a children’s charity in Chiang Rai.
