Mayhem for Mayday

The ‘Chinese Beatles’ tear up Impact with hard rockers and romantic ballads

The rock band Mayday were just a bunch of students when they got started in the late 1990s, but today they’re the hottest group in Taiwan and one of the most famous bands in the Chinese-speaking world – “the Chinese Beatles”, in fact.

And Thailand finally got to see what the fuss is all about last Saturday when the quintet sold out Impact Exhibition Hall 1 with the help of fans packing in from Singapore, Japan, mainland China and their own home turf.

Singerhead songwriter Ashin (Chen Shinhung), band leader-guitarist Monster (Wen Shangyi), bassist Masa (Tsai Shenyen), guitarist Stone (Shi Chinhang) and drummer Guan You (Liu Yenming) treated the crowd of 4,000 to a show that lasted almost three hours counting the double-track encore.

This was Mayday’s 10th tour and promoted their ninth studio album, “History of Tomorrow”, which won a brace of Golden Melody Awards in Taipei last year. That disc came after a five-year hiatus that began following the release of “The Second Round” in 2011.

Mayday is among the world’s top-selling bands, with more than 200 million digital sales of “History” alone, just in Taiwan and China.

The current tour is called simply “Life”, a title taken from the song “Life Co Ltd” on the album, and the atmosphere at Impact certainly was lively, including lots of laughs as the guys chatted with each other and the fans during the show.

They started the proceedings with pizzazz, kicking off with “Party Animal”, the first single off the album, with its lyric, “Let’s go party, party all night, hey lonely, lonely goodbye.”

Then came “OAOA”, “Zhong Jie Gu Dan” (“Still Lonely in the End”) from 2005’s “Just My Pride” and “Ru Zhen Qu” (“Song of Battle”) from the soundtrack to the 2013 Chinese TV series “Lanling Wang”.

The fans were on their feet for much of the concert, happily singing along on the choruses and waving their light sticks, turning the venue into a hypnotic sea of neon in pulsing yellow, white, blue and pink.

After the first set, the band members sat in a huddle and introduced themselves, cracked a few jokes and sang a romantic rendition of “Ni Bu Shi Zhen Zheng De Kuai Le” (“You are Not Truly Happy”). That was followed by “Gan Bei” (“Cheers”), “Xiong Di” (“Brotherhood”) and “Ren Sheng You Xian Gong Si” (“Life Co Ltd”).

The power ballads continued amid bittersweet piano and strings for “Cheng Ming Zai Wang” (“Almost Famous”), “Wo Xin Zhong Shang Wei Huai De Di Fang” (“The Yet Unbroken Part of My Heart”) and “Zhi Zu” (“Contentment”). “Wo Bu Yuan Rang Ni Yi Ge Ren” (“I Won’t Let You Be Lonely”) and “Wan Gu” (“Tough”) were complemented by endearing scenes projected on the big screen.

It seemed like Mayday were working hard to make everyone’s dreams come true.

The songs and quips were of course sung and spokes in Mandarin, but for subtitles were also projected and nothing was lost in translation.

The soloists had plenty of chances to shine, especially Monster and Stone, who staged guitar duels on the high-tempo numbers like “I Will Carry You” and “Li Kai Di Qiu Biao Mian” (“Jump the World”).

Slot Machine singer Karinyawat “Foet” Durongjirakan and guitarist Janevit “Vit” Chanpanyawong joined Mayday for “Shang Xi De Ren Bie Ting Man Ge” (“Don’ts Don’ts”), and then “Ren Yi Men” (“Dokodemo Door”) and “Ren Sheng Hia Hai” (“People Life, Ocean Wild”) kept the pace hectic.

The sensational encore featured “Zhuan Yan” (“Final Chapter”) and “Jue Jiang” (“Stubbornness”).

New concert promoter Teddy Time gets off to a good start by bringing international stars Kygo and Mariah Carey to Bangkok

Teddy Auto Sales – a car dealer focusing on imported premium cars – is spreading its wings with the introduction of Teddy Time, a new brand that aims to bring exciting music to Bangkok. It’s getting off to a good start too with upcoming concerts by Kygo and Mariah Carey.

“Teddy Time comes from my passion for music and is being made possible through the collaboration of partners,” says Kris Srithongsathien, managing director of the new promoter and son of car dealer Chukiat.

“We are a new promoter with the ability to delight and amaze. We are launching the business with shows by Norwegian DJ Kygo and pop diva Mariah Carey.”

Toemyot Dechsupa, Howard Chen, Chukiat Srithongsathian, Kris Srithongsathien

Kygo’s concert at Live Park Rama 9 on October 22 marks his debut in Thailand and is part of his “Kids in Love” tour. Fans can look forward to moving to the grooves of Tropical House music and experiencing the deeper sounds of the EDM genre. During the concert, Kygo will also perform a live set featuring tracks from his latest album “Kids in Love”.

Kygo garnered international attention with his hit “Firestone”, which has earned more than 500 million views on YouTube, as well as his remix of the track “I See Fire” by Ed Sheeran, and his latest track “Born To Be Yours” in collaboration with Imagine Dragons.

Kris and Chukiat Srithongsathian talk about their new venture Teddy Time.

Carey, a favourite with Thai fans, will show off her vocal power at Hall 106 of Bitec Bangna on November 9.

“While we have chosen to open with international stars, we are also paying attention to Thai artists. Our aim is to boost the economy,” says Kris.

One of Teddy Time’s partners is One Systems Production, with president Howard Chen and vice president Toemyot Dechsupa supporting the stage production and lighting and sound system.

“There are a lot of new concert promoters coming out but only Teddy Time is starting with concerts by two world-famous artists,” Chen notes.

Sarunrat “Lydia” Deane performs covers of Mariah Carey’s songs during the launch of Teddy Time.

“The production of these two shows is both challenging and spectacular, and will be, without exaggeration, the biggest concerts organised in Thailand. Our goal is to match the quality of the production of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in California,” adds Toemyot.

DJ Ono and DJ Ziki are among the artists opening for Kygo.

“We will be using a light and sound system on a stage structure measuring 30 metres wide, 24 metres deep and 20 metres high. It weighs 80 metric tonnes and can carry 70 tonnes of instruments. It’s the same stage system that was used 300 times during the world tour of the Jacky Cheung. So our audience will not only enjoy world famous artists but also the world’s best concert production by Thai expert crews.”

To celebrate the company’s grand opening, several Thai celebrities were invited to attend last month’s party at Helix Garden, EmQuartier.

Three leading actors from London’s most popular musicals – Daniel Koek, Hugh Maynard and Oliver Tompsett – will be in Bangkok early next year for the show “London’s West End Men”.

Supported by the British Embassy Bangkok and ThaiVisa.com, it’s being staged at the Thailand Cultural Centre on January 19, with the accompanying music played by the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra.

“There is nothing more exciting than hearing two or three guys singing in harmony especially if they are bone fide leading men…by that I mean they have played leading roles on the top stages to the world’s biggest audiences, in some of the most iconic musicals,” says “London’s West End Men” producer Paul Morrissey.

We have taken the show to China and Singapore, but this will be the first time we have all been to Thailand, and we can’t wait to fly over from London. With more than 45 musicians from the prestigious Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra supporting our talented cast, I think the Bangkok audience will fall in love with the show.”

Koek performed the lead role of Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables” for two years at London’s Queens Theatre; Maynard starred in the original version and the hit revival of “Miss Saigon: at the Prince Edward Theatre London; and Tompsett played Fiyero in “Wicked” and is currently topping the bill in “Kinky Boots” at London’s Adelphi Theatre.

They will be joined on stage by special guest, Harriet Jones, who played the lead role of Christine for three years in the London production of “The Phantom of the Opera” at Her Majesty’s Theatre, and recently received rave reviews for her part in the revival of “Guys and Dolls”.

Alongside New York’s Broadway, London’s West End theatre represents the highest quality theatre in the world. According to a National Theatre report, almost twice as many people visited the theatre every year in London as watched Premier League football. According to The Telegraph newspaper London’s West End contributed 51 billion pounds (Bt2,197 billion) to the UK economy last year as shoppers and theatregoers flocked to the heart of the capital.

British Ambassador to Thailand, HE Brian Davidson, says: “The UK has always had a strong reputation in the creative arts that contributes to its unique culture, producing home-grown writing, production and acting talent. The most famous thing about London’s West End is its theatre scene. To many, London is the theatre capital of the world, with a total of 241 professional theatres with more than 110,000 seats. These offer a myriad of drama, musicals and comedy.

“I am looking forward to watching the London’s West End Men in Bangkok as guest of honour. It will be a brilliant representation of the very best in the West End.”

Producer of Big Mango Productions, Mike Bridge, adds: “To have three such talented leading men singing solo and in harmony together on stage, with Thailand’s top orchestra, will be a very exciting and unique experience for Bangkok audiences.”

How Charles Aznavour changed music forever

How Charles Aznavour changed music forever

music October 06, 2018 14:48

By Agence France-Presse
Paris

Charles Aznavour reinvented popular music one cold December night in Paris in 1960.

“He just blew my brains out,” said Bob Dylan of the first time he witnessed the French singer’s style of delivery a little over two years later.

That concert has since gone down as one of the greatest ever at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Yet that night in Paris when a nervy Aznavour — who died Monday aged 94 — stepped out on stage to change the way songs were sung forever, his career was on the skids.

Unloved at home and utterly unknown abroad, he was at the end of his tether.

He had pulled out all the stops to fill the Alhambra concert hall in one final bid to win over the public.

But the critics had come to bury not to praise him.

The little Armenian who had written songs for Edith Piaf, and spent years as her bag carrier, was going nowhere, stuck as the “ugly duckling” of the cabaret circuit without any kind of hit for four years.

Yet it was — irony of ironies — a song he wrote about a desperate provincial crooner dreaming of fame, “Je m’voyais deja” (It Will Be My Day), that finally launched Aznavour to stardom.

Yves Montand, the actor and singer, had earlier turned it down, saying “songs about show business never work”.

But that night at the Alhambra, Aznavour did not just sing the song, he turned it into “a one-act play” about the poor crooner’s life, acting out him dressing to go on stage.

‘He was revolutionary’

And with the song’s last prophetic line, “But a day will come/ When I will show them I have the talent”, Aznavour brought the house down.

The man who begun performing at five finally found his mojo at 36.

His biographer Bertrand Dicale said “Aznavour was a revolutionary. He changed everything: the way songs were written, the themes a song could tackle, the way they could be performed.”

Never good-looking — Piaf badgered him to get a nose job, then told him it was horrible — he was by then balding and prematurely aged.

But even as doors closed in his face, he was rebuilding himself from the best of his heroes. “My four points of reference were “Edith Piaf, Charles Trenet, (the Russian acting guru) Konstantin Stanislavski and Maurice Chevalier,” he told AFP last year, adding that Bing Crosby, Mel Torme and Frank Sinatra were also in the mix.

“He stole his famous bar stool routine from Sinatra,” said Dicale. “And that way he had of telling stories between songs was inspired by Sinatra’s Las Vegas shows.”

“I had done classical dance, variety and theatre, and I wanted to get all that into my performances,” Aznavour told AFP.

– ‘He put his guts into it’ –

“I said to myself that if I put them all in I would find my own style. And I did, it became ‘Aznavour’,” said the singer born Shahnour Varinag Aznavourian to parents fleeing the massacres of Armenians as the Ottoman empire collapsed.

Aznavour, the little man who became an entertainment world giant, was honoured with a national homage in Paris Friday, a ceremony reserved for France’s greatest heroes.

He will be buried next to his parents and his son Patrick, who died aged 25 in 1976, in a cemetery near the French capital on Saturday after a mass at the city’s Armenian cathedral.

“He broke all the rules of his era when singers had to be really good looking,” said the French songwriter Calogero. “But he had this incredible personality.”

For the rapper MC Solaar “you can see the feeling with Aznavour. He wanted to move people, we are far beyond just singing with him,” he added.

Dicale added that Aznavour really became the characters in the songs, “really putting his guts into it”.

That is what impressed his peers, the writer said, and what won him the hearts of audiences across the world.

“Just seeing what he did on stage at his age gives me the courage to continue,” said the rapper Soprano, one of several hip-hop stars including Dr Dre and Sean Paul who have covered or sampled Aznavour.

“Lots of singers have a bit of Aznavour in them,” said Dicale, from “Brazilians like Caetano Veloso and Chico Buarque to… Elton John and Sting who at 19 or 20 discovered Aznavour” and have never ceased to be fans.

Bangkok’s 20th International Festival of Dance and Music pays tribute to Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson, the undisputed King of Pop, would have turned 60 this year and Thailand is joining the rest of the world in paying tribute to this great entertainer with a concert on Monday night at Thailand Cultural Centre as part of Bangkok’s 20th International Festival of Dance and Music.

Jackson once said: “A star can never die. It just turns into a smile and melts back into the cosmic music, the dance of life” and this tribute concert by an all-star troupe of singers, musicians and dancers lives up to the statement promising smiles, cosmic music and a healthy dose of MJ moves.

The show’s production values mimic those of an actual concert by the late singer and along with the brilliantly choreographed dances and phenomenal special effects are the perfect tribute to an iconic showman.

Produced by Sina Selensky, the sets, special effects, dance choreography and above all the singing recreate the magic. On the set list are all his greatest hits from solo albums like “Thriller”, “Billie Jean” and “Beat It” as well as his early chart-toppers with the Jackson 5. It was with “Billie Jean” that MJ taught the world to moonwalk.

Fronting the MJ experience is the multitalented Csaba Horvath, who channels Jackson with consummate ease and has spent the last eight years travelling around Europe and Asia personifying the King of Pop.

An uncanny Michael Jackson impersonator, Csaba captures MJ’s soul, spirit, and talent perfectly. Csaba, accompanied by a troupe of young dancers, will replicate the energy and skill of MJ’s intricate dance routines.

Adding to the show are singers Jimi Carrow, Amani Robinson and Denis Obedekah. In Carrow’s rich and soulful voice viewers can hear echoes of R&B greats like Marvin Gaye, Sam Cook and Stevie Wonder. Robinson is an established singer who has sung soprano parts in numerous concerts and oratories, and is the winner of the Austria Barock Music Award. She has guested at Oper Kiel as Consuelo in Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story”. Her repertoire also includes Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz”, Emeretta in “Hair”, Kiki in “Flashdance”, Sarah’s friend and member of the Harlem Ensemble in “Ragtime”, Deloris van Cartier in “Sister Act” and Vivian Moore and Cowgirl Jessie in “Footloose.”

Obedekah has starred in the musical “Hair: at the Stadttheater Bremerhaven and in several productions at Piccadilly Theatre, Her Majesty’s Theatre London, the BBC, and on ITV in “An Audience With Kylie Minogue”. Her repertoire also includes Inez (“Hairspray”), Rizzo (“Grease”), and Joanne (“Rent”). She has also starred in “The Physician”, “Pope Joan” and “Treasure Island”.

The six-member band is led by Grammy nominee Tim Hahn, who is also the drummer and musical director. The winner of two Echo Klassik awards, Hahn has featured on several CDs and is the long standing drummer of Europe’s most famous Queen Tribute Band MerQury.

On bass is Oliver Klemp who has played and toured with artistes like Klaus Doldinger, Sharrie Williams, Gunther Fischer and James Morisson. Lead guitarist Florian Naegeli has played on several tours with the German singer Joey Heindle and has featured in musical productions like “Cats” and “La Cage Aux Folles”.  The percussionist Alfonso Garriso has played with the likes of Lionel Richie, James Brown, Joe Cocker, Tower of Power, Kylie Minoque, Anastacia, Jamie Cullum, Tom Jones, Ricky Martin and Michael Buble.

Keyboardist Christopher Lubeck has been part of various projects like “Choreographers on the Move” by the Semper Opera Dresden and played solo piano for the CD “In the Curved Air” devoted to American singer-songwriter Chris Whitley, and the classic-jazz-crossover project In Flow, which he led as conductor. Guitarist Thomas Hubel meanwhile plays with several big bands and is resident artist at monthly jazz series “Jazz 55”.

Stitching the various elements of the tribute concert together is choreographer Lorant Koncz whose credits include shows like “Who’s Bad”, “Dancing Highlights”, “Black or White” and “Footloose”. Currently he is also choreographing for “Tom Jones the Musical”.

Supporting the Festival are Crown Property Bureau, Bangkok Bank (PCL), Bangkok Dusit Medical Services (PCL), BMW Thailand, B.Grimm Group, Dusit Thani Bangkok, Indorama Ventures, Ministry of Culture, Nation Group, Major Cineplex, PTT (PCL), Singha Corporation, Thai Union Group, Thai Airways International, Tourism Authority of Thailand and True Corporation Public Company Limited

Wanna One leads a parade of top hallyu talent bowling over 40,000 fans in Bangkok

It was “all hail to hallyu” in Bangkok again last weekend when no fewer than 40,000 devoted fans of the Korean Wave massed at Impact Arena and the adjoining exhibition centre for KCon 2018, perhaps the biggest South Korean spectacle seen in Thailand to date.

There was K-fashion, K-beauty, K-food, K-dance, K-drama and of course unrelenting K-pop, with some of the biggest names in the genre performing.

With the pop tunes scheduled for the evenings, the huge turnout – mainly Thai preteen girls but also plenty of visitors from elsewhere in Asia – spent the daylight hours checking out the non-musical action on two stages.

The Star Square offered events such as “Oppa loves Thai”, “Thai Influencer” and a “K-Pop Cover Dance Workshop”, but also, at something known as “Exclusive Fan Engagement”, a chance to practise screaming at members of Golden Child and Nature.

The KCon Stage had Nature holding forth about beauty topics. Kim Chungha (Chungha) and Monsta X did sessions with Tofupop Radio and Cho Yumyong of YMC Entertainment and Lee Jooseob of MNH Entertainment presented the success of Chungha and Wanna One.

MNH put Chungha on the TV reality show “Produce 101”, in which girl groups battle for survival, and she finished fourth, then joined other trainees in the “project girl group” IOI, which released the mini-album “Chrysalis”.

She’s found far greater fame as a solo artist and has released three mini-albums that spawned the hits “Why Don’t You Know” and “Roller Coaster”.

Wanna One – the first K-pop group to sell a million copies of a debut album – emerged from the same reality show, as an 11-member boy band, and have scored success with the tracks “Energetic”, “Burn It Up”, “Beautiful” and this year’s “Boomerang”, backed by a world tour.

Its members currently also pitch cosmetics, clothing, mobile games and food and beverages.

“We usually only see the music idols’ abilities onstage, but for Wanna One and Chungha, their personal life stories make us understand and feel for them more,” said Cho Yumyong.

“That’s why the number of fans for both of them just keeps increasing. We impress on them when they’re rehearsing that they have to do their best for the fans, and they never stop trying because they want to get better and better.”

Lee Jooseob confirmed Wanna One and Chungha’s popularity among the fans and added that, “No matter what content we attach to them, they just become more outstanding.” Lee had just had a meeting with Nichkhun (Nichkhun Buck Horvejkul), the Thai guy in the South Korean boy band 2PM.

“He called me yesterday and made an appointment to meet me in the lobby of my hotel and we had a long talk. I was impressed to hear he was trying to read a book in Korean that would be difficult for even Koreans to understand. I asked him why and he said it would help him understand the language better.”

Fans who were able to answer skill-testing questions walked away from the session with autographed Wanna One and Chungha albums.

Thai fans had set up K-pop booths where anyone could get their picture taken posing with a life-size cutout pop star. Others inked affectionate messages to the stars on giant boards.

The official opening ceremony in the arena noted the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and South Korea, something that Nichkhun helps promote and for which he earned a thankyou certificate.

“It’s a great honour for me to have the chance to go abroad and to get foreigners to love our country and culture,” he said. “I’d like to thank all the Thai fans who support Korean artists.”

The musical proceedings began with Nature, an even more cosmopolitan group than 2PM, with Chinese and Japanese among the members. They sang their first single, “Allegro Cantibile”, which is a remake of the track that opens the popular anime “Nodame Cantabile”.

More of the genre’s new acts followed onstage – Stray Kids (performing “My Pace” and “District 9”) and Golden Child (“Let Me”, “DamDaDi”). Together, the bands spelled out “THAI” – T for title song with sexy version, H for handsome, A for act cute and I for I Wannabe Like (with everyone agreeing they wanted to be like 2PM).

Chungha followed with “Why Don’t You Know”, “Roller Coaster” and “Love U” featuring DJ Soda, and Sunmi, formerly of the Wonder Girls, sang “Addict”, “Siren” and “Gashina”.

The audience basically never stopped screaming and waving around white light sticks that were shaped like the numeral one, referring to Wanna One.

They’d have to wait a little longer for them, but they certainly didn’t shut up when singer Shownu and rappers Jooheon and IM of Monsta X got the stage vibrating to the hip-hop beat of “Runway”. The trio was soon joined by the rest of the group for “Jealousy”, “Hero”, “Be Quiet” and “Dramarama”.

Okay, so finally it was time for Wanna One, and their frenzied female following – known as the Wannable – was melting into one big puddle.

Eardrums suffered irreparable damage when the hunky lads – Yoon Jisung, Ha Sungwoon, Hwang Minhyun, Ong Seongwu, Kim Jaehwan, Kang Daniel, Park Jihoon, Park Woojin, Bae Jinyoung, Lee Daehwi and Lai Guanlin – appeared in red suits.

And they demonstrated what the fandemonium was all about as they performed their highly danceable and singalongable hits “Light”, “Day by Day”, “Boomerang” and “Burn It Up”.
