Trouble-prone pop star Justin Bieber will be a married man after popping the question to model Hailey Baldwin whom he has dated for one month, reports said on Sunday.

The 24-year-old Canadian heartthrob, who has become better known for his off-stage antics, proposed to the 21-year-old over dinner Saturday night at a restaurant in The Bahamas, the celebrity news site TMZ said.

The site quoted witnesses at the restaurant, who said that Bieber’s security team asked them all to put their phones away for the proposal.

A representative for Bieber did not comment but relatives of the couple suggested that the news was true.

“Proud is an understatement! Excited for the next chapter!” the singer’s father Jeremy Bieber wrote on Instagram with a picture of his son.

His mother, Pattie Mallette, simply tweeted: “Love Love Love Love Love Love Love.”

Hailey Baldwin, a model who has taken small acting roles, is the daughter of “The Usual Suspects” actor Stephen Baldwin and niece of Alec Baldwin, the “30 Rock” star and nemesis impersonator of US President Donald Trump. The model’s mother is from Brazil.

Bieber has been romantically linked with many famous young women including fellow pop singer Selena Gomez and model Sofia Richie. He was first seen dating Baldwin a month ago.

Bieber, while remaining a top-selling pop star, became a fixture of tabloids over incidents including racing a car through Miami and throwing eggs at a neighbor’s house in Los Angeles.

He abruptly ended his global tour last year after more than 150 shows, explaining that he was trying to deal with his insecurities.

Pop-rock band Ariy Shibuya have released their first single, “Thonglor” (“Wanna Ask”) on Sanamluang Music, a subsidiary of GMM Grammy.

The band’s name is a hybrid of Bangkok’s laid-back Ari neighbourhood and Tokyo’s Shibuya ward, home to all five members – singer Taishu “Taoz” Sumiyoshi, guitarist Bhumipat “Mine” Armano, bassist Tetsuya “Tetsu” Ueda, drummer Asawin “Win” Burapongbandhit and keyboard maestro Lertmaytee “Lert” Sanguankaew.

“We’re fascinated by the Japanese rock band X Japan, but our music isn’t meant to sound like theirs,” says Taoz, the head songwriter. “There’s only a Japanese scent to it. Basically, we put Thai lyrics to Japanese melodies.”

Opera Siam brings “Madama Butterfly” to the Bangkok stage

Thais often regard opera as elitist and hard to understand, but there are some stories told through the medium that everyone can enjoy and one of these is the tale “Madama Butterfly”.

Being staged by Opera Siam this Wednesday and Thursday at the Thailand Cultural Centre, “Madama Butterly” stars Asean’s reigning diva Nancy Yuen in the title role.

Yuen, who has also portrayed Butterfly at the Royal Albert Hall in London as well as in productions in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Hong Kong is joined by a lineup of international stars accompanied by the award-winning Siam Sinfonietta.

Spanish-American tenor Israel Lozano, a protege of Placido Domingo, returns to Thailand to play Pinkerton, the American naval officer who “buys” the young Asian girlfrom a marriage broker and proceeds to abandon her.

Phillip Joll appears as the American consul Sharpless, Italian mezzo-soprano Emanuela Barazia, plays Suzuki, Australian bass Damian Whiteley stars as the bonze and Thailand’s own Chaiporn Phuangmalee is the devious Goro.

“A ‘Butterfly’ in the #metoo era is a delicate operation because while on the one hand this opera has always been viewed as romantic, lyrical and with all those fabulous melodies, at its heart it’s about a creepy white man exploiting a young Asian girl – an act to which people in Asia today are more sensitive, and certainly more condemnatory, than a 100 years ago when this opera had its premiere,” says artistic director Somtow Sucharitkul.

“In 1904, audiences couldn’t take such a caddish anti-hero, and Puccini revised the opera to make Pinkerton kinder and gentler, but he is still an antihero. Indeed, the stream of irony that ran through Puccini’s first version of the opera is not toned down at all and so the best way to show the irony is to play it straight. Make the opera as beautiful as possible, and the dark side will show itself,” he adds.

“Madama Butterfly” is one of the most influential of operas. The musical “Miss Saigon” is essentially a remake and the tale was retold in a gender-bending way in “M Butterfly”. There have also been countless movie spinoffs, including the Shirley MacLaine comedy “My Geisha”.

The Thai drama “Sao Khrueh Fah” was adapted from “Madama Butterfly” and in the 1960s, Dusdi Malakul recreated the libretto of the opera in Thai lyric poetry. A production of this Thai language play was presented in the 1960s and proved highly popular.

– Opera Siam’s “Madama Butterfly” will be performed on Wednesday and Thursday at 8pm at the Thailand Cultural Centre.

– Tickets costing Bt500 to Bt5,000 (including the reception) are on sale at Thai Ticket Major outlets and online at http://www.ThaiTicketMajor.com, at at http://www.EventBrite.com.

A little push along with indie route

music July 03, 2018 09:25

By The Nation

Sanamluang Music, a subsidiary of GMM Grammy, recently proclaimed itself as the Hub of Indie, bringing more than 30 indie bands to its “Wedding Party” at De Commune on the first floor of Liberty Building in Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor).

Tul Waitoonkait of Apartment Khunpa, Poomjit’s drummer Asanai “Max” Artskool and The Superglasses Ska Ensemble served as masters of ceremonies and announced the first show by Clockwork Motionless, an alternative rock trio featuring Eakkachai Pratangthasa on vocals, Therdthai Thongtho on bass and Siriyott Ruangtangyan on drums.

“It is very important to give people a chance. These days, many indie artists promote their musical works through their own online channels. But, we – GMM Grammy and Sanamluang Music – have channels and other elements that are more effective and can help disseminate their musical works,” said Phawit Chitrakorn, chief executive of GMM Music.

“Sanamluang Music is determined to recruit indie artists and bands to join our artist model, which consists of three strategies: ‘Sanam Ploy Khong’, ‘Sanam Show Khong’ and ‘Sanam Long Khong’. Through these, the artists will see their songs climbing the charts, being picked as soundtracks of TV programmes and TV series, and getting lots of views on YouTube,” he added.

Jiraporn “Apple” Sumanasiri, label director of Sanamluang Music, was equally encouraging.

“Sanamluang Music is a stage where indie artists have freedom to create their musical works whether they favour pop, rock, jazz, funk, punk, ska, hip-hop and metal,” Jirapon explaned.

The event also featured performances by Blues Tape of “Geisha” and “Blue Jeans”, by P.O.N.R with a medley of “Ja Woob”, “It’s a Trap”, “Love in The Club” and “Point of No Return”, and Last Fight For Finish with “Khode Kao”, “Ai Ha Aoey” and “Sunny Day”,

The Recording Academy expands its nominee field after criticism about diversity

The Grammys will expand the number of nominees in main categories for music’s most prestigious awards as organisers try to counter a backlash over how few women and minorities are winning.

In one of the biggest changes at the Grammys in years, the Recording Academy – which administers the prizes – said Tuesday in a letter to members that next year’s awards will boost the field of hopefuls from five to eight for the top four categories.

The prizes are Album of the Year; Record of the Year, which recognises overall song; Song of the Year, which honours songwriting; and Best New Artist.

Other categories will remain at five nominees. The 2019 Grammys will take place at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles at the start of the year, though an exact date has not yet been announced.

The change echoes the 2009 decision of the Academy Awards to double the number of contenders for the Best Picture Oscar from five to 10 at the most.

But while the film academy was largely trying to find a place at the televised gala for crowd-pleasing blockbusters alongside critically acclaimed fare, the Recording Academy is facing quite a different dilemma.

Criticism has mounted that the Recording Academy’s tastes are consistently old-fashioned, more in line with the older, mostly white male professionals who vote and out of tune with contemporary culture.

Hoping to bring more diversity, the Recording Academy made another key change in time for this year’s awards by switching to online ballots, broadening its pool to itinerant musicians who are not waiting at their mailboxes.

Likely due to the reform, the 2018 Grammys for the first time saw hip-hop dominate the top categories.

But the night’s big winner was ultimately Bruno Mars, the party-loving funk revivalist, rather than politically aware rappers Kendrick Lamar, JayZ or Childish Gambino.

And the latest Grammys was strikingly devoid of women, with Lorde the only nominee for Album of the Year and none earning a nod for Record of the Year, at a time that the growing #MeToo movement was raising concern about the gender biases and harassment holding back women.

Asked after the January 28 awards in New York why more women were not winning, Portnow said that female musicians needed to “step up,” while also speaking of the need for more mentorship.

His remarks generated a furore, with stars including Katy Perry and P!nk taking him to task and a group of women music executives demanding that he quit.

Portnow said on May 31 that he was stepping down next year, meaning that the expansion of Grammy nominations will likely be one of the final decisions under his watch.

In a statement announcing the expansion of nominees, Portnow said that the Recording Academy was seeking to adapt to an “everchanging industry”.

The expansion “creates more opportunities for a wider range of recognition” and “gives more flexibility to our voters when having to make the often challenging decisions,” said Portnow, a record executive who has led the academy since 2002.

The Recording Academy also announced reform of the Grammy for Best World Music Album, one of the categories that draws the most eyerolls among aficionados.

Starting next year, a review committee will determine the five nominees out of the top 15 put forward in nominations by the Academy’s 13,000 members.

Despite aiming to represent the whole planet, the World Music category has been dominated by a handful of favourites.

The South African allmale choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo, popularised abroad by Paul Simon’s 1986 “Graceland” album, won this year for the fifth time. Other perennial nominees include pop flamenco veterans Gipsy Kings.

Between 2004 and 2011, the award was split into two categories – one for traditional and one for contemporary world music – before they were merged again.

Raze is going to raze the Safe Room

music June 29, 2018 01:00

By THE NATION

Billed as Bangkok’s heaviest sound art and electronic music event, Raze will have its inaugural edition at Safe Room on Silom Soi 8 on July 6.

From 9pm until late, the air will be filled with industrial techno and hard techno music, dark and experimental music and another genre cheerfully referred to simply as “noise”.

The main man on the decks will be Ansome, a wild techno and EBM producer from London who’s wielded his heavyweight percussion and synths at the 18/7001 Festival in Rotterdam and the Rave Indoor Bunker in New York.

Raze is chiefly the name of a Bangkok-based collective whose members love hammering beats, rave culture and that “noise” thing. They’ve assembled a posse of DJs to play for a solid five hours, including Koichi Shimizu (So: On Dry Flower), Marmosets (Tempo, Zoo Studio), Psrwp (Duck Unit) and WINKIEB.

Shimizu is a Japanese living in Bangkok. He studied sound engineering in New York, then landed here in 1993 and came back to stay in 2003. His record label and party series, So: On Dry Flower, gets the local music out there and brings in foreign guests.

Ten years into his career, Shimizu finally released his own debut album, “Otolary”, in 2015, and continues to perform around Southeast Asia and in Japan and South Korea. In 2016 he toured Europe with Berlin-based artist Inner8, a member of the techno duo Dadub, and contributed a track to a compilation album of Korean underground collective Constant Value.

Marmosets, which blends experimental house, techno and hardware synthesiser, is an offshoot project for Kingkong, the FJ-producer who won the Heineken DJ Spin competition in 2006. He’s released tunes on Beatport, Traxsource and iTunes but has his own label, Zoo Studio, and cofounded TempoBkk.com.

Psrwp is an experimental project of Bangkok-based motion and visual graphic designer Peerawas Chooraksa, and Winkieb is editor-in-chief of TempoBkk.com who’s been in the city’s electronic music and underground music scenes for years.
