While soothing, ambient sounds like Tibetan singing bowls and chimes, and the serene tones of nature tend to comprise the traditional yoga soundtrack, some 21st-century practitioners have begun to think outside the box.

Today, pop, hip-hop, rock, R&B, and reggae are also being used to inspire yoga practices. For some, yoga is no longer just about mastering asanas (postures), but taking the opportunity to get creative and expressive with the right beats to match.

“There is a growing interest globally on the impact certain music has on performance,” says Dr Amanda Krause, a psychologist and Research Fellow at The University of Melbourne, Australia, who specialises in the social and applied psychology of music.

“We refer to it in the industry as ‘musical fit,’ where the type of music you feel ‘fits’ an activity creates an impact on the way you physically react.”

“A person’s judgement of musical fit relates to their listening preferences, environment, and goal for certain practices,” Krause continues. “For example, with yoga, the variety of music is chosen with regard to how it helps timing, focus, and motivation, which in turn enhances your overall performance.”

Evidence can be found in the 11-per-cent increase in yoga playlist streams since last year, with year-over-year, with practitioners turning to one of Spotify’s 2.4 million user-generated, yoga-inspired playlists to stream while in downward dog.

“While music has always been a huge part of our lives, the advent of streaming has made it even more so, to the point that nowadays we even shape our yoga practice around it,” says Julie Stevanja, chief executive officer of Stylerunner.

“This evolution of using music as the base of our practice has almost become a yoga style of its own. It’s all about tapping into our subconscious, which music allows us to do more freely. Upbeat songs make poses stronger and more dynamic, while relaxing tunes can help us feel more grounded in our resting poses.”

In Thailand, the top played songs on yoga playlists are;

Wah! – Ganesha

Deva Premal – Gayatri Mantra

Craig Pruess & Ananda – Devi Prayer

Reiki – Healing Massage Music

Michael Silverman – Clair De Lune

Xavier Rudd – Follow The Sun

Michael Silverman – Scarborough Fair

Deep Sleep Relaxation – Healing

Nature Sounds for Sleep and Relaxation – Ocean Waves (South Carolina)

Nature Sounds for Sleep and Relaxation – Mountain Lake Lullaby

Australian rockers end Jay-Z, Beyonce No. 1 debut streak

Australian pop band 5 Seconds of Summer stunned Beyonce and Jay-Z by opening Sunday at the top of the US album chart, with the couple’s surprise collaboration ending the superstars’ streak of number one debuts.

5 Seconds of Summer had stepped up promotion of their album “Youngblood” after Jay-Z and Beyonce dropped “Everything Is Love,” with the Australians telling fans they were in a close race for number one and encouraging listeners over social media to stream their songs continuously to drive up their totals.

“Youngblood” wound up selling 142,000 copies or the equivalent in downloads and streams in the week through Thursday, edging out “Everything Is Love” which clocked up 123,000 copies, tracking service Nielsen Music said.

5 Seconds of Summer, who emerged in 2011 as YouTube sensations when the then students in Sydney uploaded covers of popular songs, becomes the first Australian act to top the Billboard 200, the benchmark US chart, with three different albums.

Jay-Z and Beyonce, two of the biggest names in US pop culture, put out “Everything Is Love” with no warning on June 16 after a concert in London.

A musical celebration of their marriage, “Everything Is Love” initially came out only on Tidal, the fledgling streaming service led by Jay-Z, but went out widely including on rival Spotify on June 18 — the fourth day of the counting period for the latest weekly chart.

“Everything Is Love” becomes the first solo studio album by Beyonce not to debut at number one. All of Jay-Z’s studio albums have also opened at number one since 1998’s “Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life” with the exception of a poorly reviewed 2002 collaborative album with R&B singer R. Kelly.

Beyonce and Jay-Z both opened at number one with their last solo albums, “Lemonade” and “4:44” respectively, despite refusing to stream them on Spotify.

Number three on the latest US album chart is “?” by the controversial rapper XXXTentacion, with interest spiking after he was shot dead on June 18 at age 20.

“?,” which sold 94,000 copies in the week, had opened at number one in March. XXXTentacion’s success took the music world by surprise with his songs full of references to suicide and the rapper awaiting trial on charges of beating his pregnant former girlfriend.

R&B duo SloJoe – “Voice Thailand” Season 2 contestant Nitiphoom “Palm” Phookristsana and Nantharat “Bank” Chuangngam – are about to release their second single, “Ja Mai Mee Wan Plien” (“I’ll Never Change”), a followup to the debut with the rather violent-sounding title, “Prode Long Thod (Krathueb) Chan”.

The new track on the LOVEiS Entertainment label is about uncertain hearts, asking “Is our love still the same?” and “Will our relationship change over time?” Palm said he has his own lover in mind when he co-wrote it with Bank.

“In the first single, I asked my girlfriend for a second chance after I’d made a mistake. This time I’m saying I’m afraid our love won’t be the same, but it’s been a long time and my love has never changed.”

Paul McCartney turns 76 and teases ‘Egypt Station’

music June 19, 2018 07:02

By Agence France-Presse
New York

Paul McCartney on Monday teased news of “Egypt Station” — presumed to be the title of his next album — as the former Beatle celebrated his 76th birthday.

The rock legend on social media released a video of the Pyramids and palm trees swaying in the wind on a sand-colored background set to snippet of ambient music mixed with vehicular traffic.

McCartney and his label did not provide further details but speculation immediately grew that he was ready with his next album, which would be his first of new material since 2013.

While McCartney is more known for an interest in India than Egypt, a 1999 painting by the musician and artist was entitled “Egypt Station” and depicted sunflowers and animals under a blue sky.

McCartney, who toyed with retirement following the end of The Beatles more than 40 years ago, has shown a burst of energy as a septuagenarian and toured the world for much of 2016 and 2017.

In an online fan forum during the latest winter holidays, McCartney said he was putting “finishing touches” on a new album that would likely come out in 2018.

He earlier revealed that he was working on music with Greg Kurstin, the in-demand Los Angeles producer best known for co-writing Adele’s mega-ballad “Hello.”

Despite his stamina, McCartney told Rolling Stone magazine two years ago that it would be “”unimaginable — and unseemly” to keep performing when he is 80.

The now 76-year-old has also said that he has stopped drinking before concerts so as not to forget his lyrics, instead waiting until after the show to imbibe.

Chart-topping rapper XXXTentacion shot dead at 20

music June 19, 2018 06:52

By Agence France-Presse
Miami

XXXTentacion, the troubled 20-year-old rapper whose bleak, self-released rhymes propelled him to the top of the US chart this year, was shot dead Monday in Florida, authorities said.

The rapper, whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy, was gunned down in broad daylight near a motorcycle store in Deerfield Beach north of Miami, the Broward County sheriff’s department said.

He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. XXXTentacion becomes one of the biggest names in hip-hop to be killed in recent years after a slew of slayings in the 1990s.

A spokesman for the sheriff’s department declined to give further details and a representative for XXXTentacion did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The celebrity news site TMZ, quoting audio from a dispatch call to the sheriff’s department, said that two assailants in hoodies, with the gunman in a red mask, stole a Louis Vuitton bag from the rapper’s vehicle and sped away in a black SUV.

A Florida native identifiable for his spiked-up dreadlocks, XXXTentacion found a wide following by uploading songs on sharing site SoundCloud, with a dark, often muffled style of hip-hop full of lyrics about his depression and past crime.

Without any promotion in traditional terms, his second album, entitled “?,” debuted at the top of the Billboard album chart in March.

XXXTentacion’s success triggered controversy due to a past that is violent even by the standards of the rap world. Around the time of his latest album’s release, he was being released from house arrest as he awaits trial on charges of beating up his pregnant ex-girlfriend.

Spotify last month singled out XXXTentacion as part of a policy not to promote songs by artists known for “harmful or hateful” behavior, but the leading streaming service backed down after charges that it had overstepped its role over vague criteria.

Going to “Extremes”

THE NATION

Thai rockers Bodyslam have long been fans of American rockers Mr Big and Extreme, so much so that Bodyslam’s frontman Artiwara “Toon” Kongmalai, guitarist Thanachai “Yod” Tantrakul, bassist Tanadol “Pid” Changsawek, drummer Suchatti “Chad” Janed and keyboardist Ohm Plengkhum, were very much in evidence when the former played in Bangkok.

Mr Big’s concert was staged last Tuesday at GMM Live House on the eighth floor of CentralWorld last Tuesday and the band showed off their trademark “shredding” musicianship and awesome vocal harmonies, playing tracks off their latest album “Defying Gravity” as well as hits “Alive And Kicking”, “To Be With You” and “Just Take My Heart”.

Mr Big’s members Billy Sheehan, Eric Martin and Paul Gilbert jammed together during their longawaited concert in Thailand.

Thai rock heads screamed as vocalist Eric Martin, guitarist Paul Gilbert, bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Pat Torpey swung into a set that included “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy”, “Lost in America”, “Alive And Kickin’”, “Rock & Roll Over” and “Take Cover” before easing into sing-along ballads “Just Take My Heart”, “Wild World”, “Green Tinted Sixties Mind” and “To Be With You.”

Also at the show were Sweet Mullet’s Dulyakiat “Tao” Lertsuwannakul, Blackhead, Dezember’s Siam Chumthong, Inca’s Nol Singholaka, Kitti Guitar Gun, Kaleidoscope’s Sirisak “Moo” Sirichotinun, and Sutthipong “Chompoo Fruity” Wattanajang.

The following night Toon Bodyslam came alone to Extreme’s concert at the same venue and was soon joined by Saharat “Kong Nuvo” Sangkapreecha, Ronnadet “Nam” Wongsaroj, Blackhead, Sweet Mullet, Wizard’s Ekachai “Ae” Krai-arnon, Pichet “King The Voice” Buakham, Kitti Guitar Gun, and Manote Puttan.

Extreme came with its original members, Gary Cherone on lead vocals, Nuno Bettencourt on guitar, and Patrick Badger on bass, with Kevin Figueiredo replacing drummer Paul Geary, who is now working in artist management.

Extreme entertained with “It’s A Monster”, “Li’l Jack Horny”, “Get The Funk Out”, “Rest In Peace”, “Hip Today”, “Play With Me”, “Decadence Dance” and “More Than Words” then surprised the crowd with a cover of Queen’s timeless hit “We Are The Champions.”

Toon Bodyslam was thrilled to meet Extreme’s members and presented each of them with a pair of Thai boxing shorts screened with their names. The Thai rocker asked Nuno before playing a 26-second video clip, and all Extreme members then congratulated Toon on raising US$40 million during his marathon country-wide run.

Toon Bodyslam presented boxing shorts to Extreme’s members before asking for their autographs on his vinyl recordings.

A huge fan of Extreme, Toon Bodyslam asked Extreme to autograph the vinyls he had brought along to the gig and took their picture before happily posing with his legion of Thai fans as he made the way to his car.

Chiang Mai-based pop quintet Electric Neon Lamp isn’t only producing its songs, “Jeb Laew Ngai?” and “Tob Pak”, but also starring in the action scenes for the two music videos. These are directed by Pokpong Khumwan, who helmed last year’s horror flick “Siam Square”.

Singer Jensakda Jarana, guitarists Nawat Jiraboonraung and Tanphun Kanacharoen, bassist Wathanyu Suriyawong and drummer Ratcha Wattanachitranon play a group of treasure hunters who enter the forest armed and find themselves facing not only an explosion but also a tiger.

Both songs are centred on a love story. “Jeb Laew Ngai?” is mostly pop with a rap segment written and performed by Maiyarap while “Tob Pak” follows the trademark Electric Neon Lamp sound and talks about a good man with a bad mouth.

We are really opening ourselves to the world and living happily,” says singer Prakarn “Name” Raiva. “The music video focuses on Getsunova’s members who have to choose between running the family business and following their dreams of playing music.
