President Blue Ivy Carter?

Music power couple Jay-Z and Beyonce have imagined their daughter as a transformative US leader in a new video.

Blue Ivy, who turns six on January 7, is depicted as leading an all-female constitutional convention in 2050 in a video released Friday for her father’s song “Family Feud.”

The video — shot by “Selma” director Ava DuVernay, one of the most prominent African-American women in Hollywood — tells a story with echoes of “Game of Thrones” and Shakespearean tragedy as it depicts a futuristic conflict.

The plot cuts back to 2050 as “America’s founding mothers” — a cheeky take on the “founding fathers” who established the US political system — passionately debate whether to preserve the constitution’s Second Amendment, which protects the right to bear arms.

The women needed to revise the constitution at a time “when some thought that making America great meant making us afraid of each other,” a descendant is heard saying — in an unmistakable critique of President Donald Trump and his campaign slogan.

The convention ends with a forceful appeal from the meeting’s leader: “America is a family, and the whole family should be free.”

The descendant mentions wisdom she learned from her father — and her identity becomes clear as the story shifts to the year 2018 and the real-life Blue Ivy is seen with Jay-Z in church.

Jay-Z then opens his song, appearing as if he is giving confession as Beyonce — sporting robes and a cap resembling the miter worn by Catholic cardinals — dances about.

“Family Feud” does not explicitly depict Blue Ivy as president, but the video quickly sparked chatter online.

“President Blue Ivy 2050. #FamilyFeud. I’ll be 79 when I cast this vote,” hip-hop drummer and producer Questlove wrote on Twitter.

The song appeared on Jay-Z’s Grammy-nominated album “4:44,” in which the rapper acknowledged infidelity to Beyonce, although “Family Feud” lyrically looks largely at his place in hip-hop.

Jay-Z and Beyonce, who together are worth an estimated $1 billion, have been increasingly outspoken about their left-leaning political views and are friendly with former president Barack Obama.

The “Family Feud” video, which appears only on Jay-Z’s Tidal streaming platform, features cameos by multiple film and television stars including Jessica Chastain, America Ferrera, Rashida Jones, Mindy Kaling and Brie Larson.

The subject of every song

THE NATION

This was the year Thai musicians united in their choice of theme – paying homage to His Majesty King Bhumibol

There was one theme that every Thai musician shared in 2017 – the life and death of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The beloved monarch was the obvious choice in subject matter for our songwriters and producers, and each tune in its way has become a jewel in the crown of the late King as we continue to cherish his memory.

The first songs to appear about His Majesty shared in the spontaneous national outpouring of grief, shock and uncertainty at his death on October 13, 2016.

Among them were “Phor Khrub” (“Daddy”) by pop specialist Patiwet “Fongbeer” Uthaichalerm, “Chan Kerd Nai Ratchakaln Thee Kao” (“I Was Born in the Reign of King Rama IX”) by rocker Seksan “Sek Loso” Sukpimai and “Lao Soo Larn Fang” (“Story to Tell a Grandchild”) by luk thung artist Sala Khunawut.

Songs-for-lifer Yuenyong “Ad Carabao” Ophakul offered “Phor Bhumibol” (“Father Bhumibol”), Bodin “Pae” Chareunratch of Mild wrote “Kor Pen Kha Rong Phrabat Thuk Chart Pai” (“May You Forever Be My King”), and Trai “Boy” Bhumirat gave us “Bot Pleng Khong Phor” (“Song for Father”).

Kachorndej “Kob” Promraksa of rock band Big Ass contributed “Look Khor Sanya” (“I Promise”), veteran singer-songwriter Thaneth Warakulnukroh penned “13 Tula Nueng Toom Tong” (“October 13 at 7pm”), and Retrospect, another rock outfit, recorded “Khid Thueng Phor” (“Miss You, Dad”).

“I’d never written a song for the King before,” Fongbeer says. “This song I would describe as a personal letter of condolence. I left behind the standard song format of voice, hook and solo and wrote it straight from my heart. There’s an atmosphere of heavy rain and the outpouring of grief – it says in the first verse that the tears of the Thai people flow even harder than the rain.

“I’m like a child of the father of the nation talking about my feelings for him. And, rather than look for someone else to sing this song, I decided to sing it myself. It’s very different from my usual love songs. I didn’t have to use my imagination for the lyrics – I’ve loved the King since the day I was born.”

Sek Loso says he first came up with the phrase “this song is for my father”.

“In the first verse I say I was born in the reign of King Rama IX, just like 80 per cent of all Thai people. The lyrics say I love the King and will try to do good according to his guidance.”

Khru Sala was imagining himself sitting weeping by a picture of the King and being asked by a grandchild why he was crying.

“The grandchild represents the generation just being born, after his reign, who will wonder about the man in the picture making their parents cry. I think the best thing we can all do is follow the King’s guidance – do good and be united. He is still very much part of our lives.”

Ad Carabao took his inspiration from well-known photos of the King visiting people upcountry.

“There is no monarch in the world like His Majesty the late King Bhumibol, who put his knowledge at the disposal of his people,” he says. “My aim was to convey the message that Thais should follow in the King’s footsteps and continue to develop our country creatively and economically.”

Pae Mild also set out to write “the tale of a father”.

“I wanted the generation to come to know his story and why the King was called ‘Father’. I started writing the song while watching the early biographical tributes aired on TV. The King always said it’s hard to be a good man because being good takes perseverance, diligence and tolerance.”

The music video accompanying Thaneth’s song opens with the sound of a ticking clock. “That represents the void Thai people felt at hearing the announcement on October 13,” he says.

Nap Retrospect describes his band’s music video. “There are scenes of people mourning and footage of several violent events, and then it ends with the King’s undertakings for his people. I’d love for everybody to follow the King’s guidance and do good in his name.”

Once the initial shock of the loss began to wear off, the commemorative songs became more contemplative, particularly as the late funeral neared. Most reminded us that the late King would remain in our hearts only if we did followed his example in showing each other love and caring. It was also important, the songwriters cautioned, to pursue the royal philosophy of self-sufficiency.

Pongprom Snitwong Na Ayuthaya conceived a requiem to His Majesty, a first for Thailand. “Phra Phu Ma Prode” (“Phra Mahadhamracha Bhumibol” in English), the recorded version was nearly 12 minutes long.

Pongprom and his producers assembled 160 traditional Thai musicians and foreign talent to record the work in four segments – “Krab Phrabat”, “Phra Bodhisattva Song Juti” (“The Incarnation of Phra Bodhisattva”), “Prach Haeng Din Lae Nam” (“Philosopher of Earth and Water”) and “Krab Bangkhom La”.

“The first part offers condolences,” Pongprom says. “It opens with the sound of Ajarn Thanis Sriklindee’s khlui and continues in a minor key to convey the people’s sense of loneliness and grief.

“Traditional Thai music and singing are prominent in the second part and a tabla drum helps convey the mood of Thai and Brahmin music.

“Then it segues into modern classical music, with a light mood and tone. This part features five verses related to the late King’s wisdom and guidance, such as ‘We shall reign in righteousness for the benefits and happiness of the Siamese people’. It also covers the sufficiency philosophy, the cultivation of three kinds of forests for four benefits, by which trees should be planted first in the hearts of the people.

“And the requiem ends with ‘Thawai Bangkom La’, which explains how the King dedicated himself body and soul to improving water management and reversing the effects of soil erosion throughout his 70 years on the throne. We must continue the late King’s commitments.”

Yuenyong “Ad” Ophakul, frontman of legendary songs-for-life band Carabao, pays home to his nephew, rock star Artiwara “Toon” Kongmalai of Bodyslam with the new song “Kongmalai”.

Toon has just completed his 2,191-kilometre charity run under the campaign, “Kao Kon La Kao” (“Take One Step Each”) and raised more than Bt1 billion for 11 Thai hospitals.

“I got the inspiration from running with Toon during his stop in his hometown in Suphan Buri. I was most impressed by the number of fans who turned out wearing garlands made of banknotes to donate to him. The song, which coincidentally takes Toon’s last name, Kongmalai, is actually about the flower garland,” Ad Carabao explains.

The “Kao Kon La Kao” campaign, which has surpassed its original aim of raising more than Bt700 million during the crosscountry run from Yala to Chiang Rai, will see the funds donated to 11 hospitals that lack proper medical equipment. They are: Yala Hospital, Surat Thani Hospital, Ratchaburi Hospital, Chao Phraya Yommarat Hospital, Saraburi Hospital, Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital, Nan Hospital, Phramongkutklao Hospital, Chao Phya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital, Khon Kaen Hospital and Nakornping Hospital.

Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Alfredo Rodriguez, whose stylings have been compared to those of Keith Jarrett and Thelonious Monk, will bring his trio to Thailand next month for a gig at Mahidol University’s College of Music.

Rodriguez, bassist-guitarist Munir Hossn and drummer Michael Olivera will perform as part of the Thailand International Jazz Conference taking place from January 26 to 28.

The conference is more than just performances, though. It’s designed as an educational series, aimed at inspiring musicians and sharing knowledge, and features competitions for soloists and improvisers. There’s even a jazz camp from January 22 to 24.

Rodriguez was born in Havana in 1985 and began his musical studies in percussion at age seven and in piano at age 10. He attended the Manuel Saumell and Amadeo Roldan conservatories.

In his music he tells stories about growing up in Cuba, famed for its rich and diverse musical traditions. Granted asylum in the US in 2009, he was mentored by Quincy Jones, who has called Rodriguez “one of the most prolific and gifted pianists of the 21st century”.

Grammy-winning American rock band Imagine Dragons will return to Bangkok on January 11 for a show at Oasis Arena at Show DC.

The current “Evolve World Tour” is their third in support of their third studio album, even though “Evolve” only came out this year.

They kicked off on September 26 in Phoenix, Arizona, and will wind it up in Stockholm next April 26.

It’s nothing new for the Dragons, of course. They spent five years touring behind their 2012 debut album, “Night Visions”. But they shortened the road trip for their sophomore effort, “Smoke + Mirrors”, released in 2015, to a mere 10 months.

Following the release of two singles, “Believer” last February and “Thunder” in April, they unveiled their third studio album, “Evolve”, on May 9.

Seats for the Bangkok gig cost Bt2,500 to Bt4,500 at http://www.ThaiTicketMajor.com and (02) 262 3456. Keep up to date at http://www.BECTero.com.

Facebook promises personalized music in first label deal

Facebook announced a licensing deal Thursday with Universal Music Group, its first with a major label, as the social media giant promised more personalized, interactive music features for its two billion users.

The move marks a new foray into music by Facebook, which despite its global conquest had been low-key in developing music functions compared with fellow tech titans Apple, Google and Amazon.

Universal — home to some of the biggest names in music from The Beatles to Elton John and Lady Gaga — billed the agreement as its latest success in securing more revenue from songs in an age of round-the-clock Internet sharing.

Universal will license its music recordings and videos around the world for use on Facebook as well as on Instagram and the virtual reality site Oculus, which are both owned by Mark Zuckerberg’s company.

Facebook said users will eventually have access to a vast library from Universal, allowing them to upload licensed music or share it through Messenger.

The two companies, in a joint statement, said they were developing more personalized functions in a bid to “develop the next generation of music products that best engage social consumers.”

While music postings are omnipresent on Facebook, the company attempts to take down embedded content that is copyrighted, with fans either uploading their own videos or linking to other sites such as YouTube and Spotify.

A senior executive at Universal Music Group called the agreement, whose financial details were not disclosed, a “dynamic new model” for the relationship between the music industry and social media platforms.

“This partnership is an important first step demonstrating that innovation and fair compensation for music creators are mutually reinforcing — they thrive together,” said Michael Nash, the label group’s executive vice president of digital strategy.

“We look forward to Facebook becoming a significant contributor to a healthy ecosystem for music that will benefit artists, fans and all those who invest in bringing great music to the world,” he said in the statement.

– Facebook sees video future –

The announcement comes two days after Universal inked a separate licensing agreement with YouTube — long an irritant to the music industry which says the video site pays too little in compensation.

YouTube, which is owned by Google, is reportedly exploring the launch of a new streaming service in 2018 to compete with Spotify, Apple Music and other on-demand music services.

Facebook has increasingly gone head-to-head with YouTube on its signature turf of videos. Zuckerberg on an earnings call earlier this year described video as a “mega-trend” which will shape the future of social media.

Last year, the site made a concerted push into livestreaming with Facebook Live, letting users with a smartphone broadcast everything from press conferences to their dinner parties to the world at large.

And in August, the company launched Facebook Watch in the United States, a sub-section on the platform that like YouTube offers unique, quirky videos by homebody presenters unlikely to be cast by television executives.

Facebook’s agreement with Universal — especially if competitors Warner Music and Sony Music reach similar deals — could eventually raise questions for Vevo, a site created in 2009 by the three big labels to monetize their videos.

Vevo has become a key conduit to watch music videos on YouTube, with the Vevo account of Justin Bieber — another star on Universal — becoming the second most-subscribed of all YouTube channels.

YouTube seals deal with top music label amid streaming moves

YouTube said Tuesday that it had sealed a licensing agreement with the world’s largest music label conglomerate Universal as the video behemoth explores creating a new streaming service.

YouTube, which is part of Google, said it reached a long-term agreement with the Universal Music Group, months after a deal with competitor Warner Music.

A joint statement did not specify the terms but hinted that the agreement would address compensation by YouTube, a constant source of irritation within the music industry.

“This important step forward provides our recording artists and songwriters improved content flexibility and growing compensation from YouTube’s ad-supported and paid-subscription tiers,” Universal chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge said in the statement.

He said the agreement also advanced “YouTube’s commitment to manage music rights on its platform.”

The recorded music industry has posted two years of solid growth after years in the doldrums thanks to the rapid growth of subscriptions on Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming platforms.

But the industry, led by the IFPI trade group, has long berated YouTube for the rates it pays.

YouTube argues that it pays a fair price. With the video site’s focus on user-generated content, YouTube enjoys protection under United States law that largely absolves internet companies from responsibility for users’ activities.

With Google languishing behind in music streaming, several technology sites reported last month that YouTube is preparing the launch of its own streaming service in 2018.

The video site already has a YouTube Music platform and the advertising-free YouTube Red subscriptions, but it is reportedly looking to set up a more elaborate site on the model of the major, on-demand music services.

The licensing agreements would be vital for a successful YouTube streaming service, with music fans unlikely to embrace a platform that has glaring gaps in its catalog.

Pop diva Katy Perry will add to the heat in the hot season as she returns to Bangkok for a gig at Impact Arena Muang Thong Thai on April 10 as part of her “Witness: The Tour”.

The Asia leg also includes Tokyo, Hong Kong, Manila, Taipei, Singapore and Jakarta and comes hot on the heels of the addition of a South American leg.

With “Witness”, Perry finds liberation in the changes in her own life and in the world around her, delivering songs that inspire both thought and movement. The singles released thus far – the Platinum-certified “Chained to the Rhythm” featuring Skip Marley, and the singles, “Bon Appetit” featuring Migos and “Swish” featuring Nicki Minaj – hint at the breadth of the musical and thematic elements found on Witness.

“Witness: the Tour” is an imaginative trip from outer-space to inner-space, from the planets to the bottom of oceans, and a musical journey through Perry’s biggest milestones and mega-hits right up to her latest album.

Perry made her Capitol Records debut with 2008’s “One of the Boys” after signing to the label in 2007. She cemented her status as a global superstar with the follow-up album, “Teenage Dream” (2010). “PRISM”, her 2013 album, debuted at No. 1 on iTunes in 100 countries and has sold more than 12.5 million adjusted albums worldwide.

With the singles “Roar,” “Firework” and “Dark Horse” each surpassing the 10 million threshold including song sales and streams, she is the first female artist to earn three RIAA Digital Single Diamond Awards. In her 10 years with Capitol, she has racked up a cumulative 18+ billion streams alongside worldwide sales of more than 40+ million adjusted albums and 125+ million tracks. She is the most-followed person globally on Twitter, and the first to surpass 100 million followers.

Tickets for the Bangkok show go on sale on January 13 at Thai Ticket Major counters and online at www.ThaiTicketMajor.com. As the official credit card for the pre-sale, Citi will give its card members access to pre-sale tickets on January 9 and 10. Customers of Ocean Life Insurance can access pre-sale tickets on January 11 and 12. Prices start at Bt3,500.
