Neil Young releases vast archive and new politically loaded album

Neil Young on Friday opened an exhaustive online archive of his half-century career, as the rock legend charged ahead on a politically loaded new album.

In a project whose breadth has no parallels among musicians of his level of fame, Young made all of his albums available for streaming alongside the accompanying lyrics, credits and artwork as well as videos and tour information.

In a delight for fans of the ever-prolific Canadian with years of rumored obscurities, the Neil Young Archives includes around 10 unreleased albums although most are not yet fully uploaded.

Marking his life’s journey, Young inaugurated his archive and new album by playing a livestreamed solo concert at a 225-seat theater in his rural hometown of Omemee, Ontario.

Envisioning the archives as a high-tech version of collections that authors and fellow rock elders generally establish at universities, Young said he would continually update the site, accessible at neilyoungarchives.com.

Young wrote that he had spent years designing the site, which will be free through June 30 after which Young said he will charge a “very modest” fee.

Rocky past with streaming

The project marks the latest turn in the 72-year-old rocker’s turbulent relationship with online music.

Several years ago he developed Pono, a portable device vaunted to provide the best-ever mobile sound quality, but it was recently discontinued.

Young for around a year took all of his music down from Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming sites, complaining that the sound quality was subpar and had lowered the bar for the entire industry.

For his online archive, Young said he had worked with the Singaporean firm OraStream to develop the finest possible audio, with music files that carry up to 20 times as much data as MP3s, the files typically used on streaming platforms and iTunes.

In recognition that not all listeners have advanced computers or fast connections, Young also lets users choose to stream the music at less bandwidth.

Prioritizing quality and detail over efforts to be user-friendly, the site has a sleek but cluttered interface in the shape of an old-style stereo with knobs and dials, with multiple ways to filter searches.

Young himself explains how to use his archives in a 10-minute video after which he offers matter-of-factly: “Don’t forget to have a good time and try not to get lost.”

Forceful takedown of Trump

The archives go back to 1963 and Young’s very first recording: the single “The Sultan,” recorded in Winnipeg.

The site ends with his brand new album out Friday, “The Visitor,” Young’s second work with Promise of the Real, a hard-charging back-up band featuring Lukas Nelson, son of country great Willie Nelson.

Young, never reticent about his political views, lays directly into President Donald Trump from the get-go on “Already Great,” a play on the tycoon’s “Make America Great Again” election slogan.

A longtime resident of California, the artist best known for “Rockin’ in the Free World” attacks Trump and, as on recent albums, sings of the environment in nearly religious terms.

“The Boy King don’t believe in Science / It goes against the Big Money Truth,” Young sings on “Stand Tall.”

“The Visitor” marks one of Young’s more consistently forceful albums of recent years, the high-energy guitars giving way to reflective bridges as his voice veers toward highs.

Yet there are also musical shifts, with straight-up blues on “Diggin’ a Hole” and a merging of rock with strings on “Children of Destiny.”

He appears to allude to Trump’s promised barrier with Mexico on “Change of Heart” as Young sings, “Hate is not worth using / Even as cement / To build your walls that you hide behind.”

And on “When Bad Got Good,” Young turns Trump’s election taunt of Hillary Clinton back against him. The rocker bellows: “Lock him up!”

Before “Sweet Dreams”, the Eurythmics were braced for failure

“Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” has become a classic in pop music and marked a commercial breakthrough for synthpop. But before the Eurythmics wrote it, the duo feared they were finished.

“I remember that I was in a terrible mood that day. I actually thought we should give up,” Annie Lennox recalls of the 1982 recording session in London with her bandmate Dave Stewart.

“I’m sitting there feeling like I’m probably going to tell him that I’m going back to Scotland and just forget it,” says the Aberdeen native, whose first album with Stewart as the Eurythmics had been a commercial failure.

Suddenly, Lennox found a deceptively simple melody on the keyboard. And Stewart, generally a guitarist, quickly came up with a beat as he tinkered with an early drum machine.

“Everything was oddly infectious and powerful, but we didn’t – and the record label definitely didn’t – choose it as a single off the album until about the third or fourth choice,” Stewart said.

The duo, who have not performed together for several years but retain a friendly chemistry, were speaking to the press as they vie to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Strolling the historic East-West Studio in Hollywood, where the Beach Boys recorded “Pet Sounds”, Lennox sat down at a piano and – unprompted – offered an acoustic version of “Sweet Dreams”.

The Eurythmics are in the running for the first time for the Hall of Fame, with music experts and fans voting for a decision to be announced in December.

Other acts in the running range from experimental rockers Radiohead to singing legend Nina Simone.

To mark the renewed attention, the group announced that they will reissue all of their albums on vinyl in 2018.

Stewart notes that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has recognised the artists who have persevered.

“A lot of people see an artist like ourselves – we’re on TV or whatever – and that’s the first time they see you and they think, ‘Oh, they’re already doing great.’

“But they don’t see the four, five or 10 years of living in a squat or struggling and playing to three people. I think every single artist in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been through these challenges.”

“Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These)” and its album of the same name, released in early 1983, shot up the charts in both Europe and North America followed by other major albums including “Be Yourself Tonight”.

On the “Sweet Dreams” song, Stewart found the drum machine out of whack, giving a heavy boom on the first beat, unlike dance tracks where the backbeat generally is dominant.

The song has nonetheless become a common sample in electronic dance music – and frequently covered, most notably by goth rocker Marilyn Manson.

“We never in a million years thought that this would be a song that would be in every EDM festival around the world, because we weren’t making dance music,” Stewart says.

Penning the lyrics, Lennox says “Sweet Dreams” was initially meant ironically considering the duo’s bleak state. But she came to see the song as speaking to the hopes that everyone carries through life.

“It’s like, okay, we’re here, what are we going to do with it? We know we’re going to die at the end of it,” she says.

“So it’s a very philosophical line and it’s almost like a little haiku poem in a strange little way.”

In the spirit of everyone finding their own dreams, Lennox is fine with other interpretations.

“It has nothing to do with sadomasochism, which people have often thought it does,” she says.

“But actually if you want to make it about that, that’s okay. Marilyn Manson took it to one extreme and we were very glad that he did.”

Harry Styles due in Bangkok next spring

music November 24, 2017 09:05

By THE NATION

English singer-songwriter-actor Harry Styles, who rose to stardom as a member of the massively successful boy band One Direction, will be at Impact Arena in Muang Thong Thani next May 7.

Styles’ first world tour as a solo artist brings him first to Singapore and then Hong Kong before reaching Thailand. He’s promoting his debut solo album and single, both titled “Sign of the Times” and released this past spring.

Styles is a Cheshire lad, from northern England, having initially been the singer for the band White Eskimo. In 2010 he auditioned for the British edition of television’s “The X Factor”.

He and four other contestants pooled their talents to form One Direction, which turned into a global, multiple-award-winning juggernaut that released five albums.

The band announced an extended hiatus in January 2016, and the following June, Styles signed with Columbia Records as a solo artist.

“Sign of the Times” was No 1 on the UK Singles Chart and No 4 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The album debuted at the top of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

Also this year there was yet another debut – Styles making his first appearance in a movie, Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk”.

Overwhelming demand for tickets for the 20172018 world tour has led to 56 show dates being added. It kicked off in September and mainly intimate venues and continues into July 2018, with the final show in Los Angeles.

Seats for the Bangkok gig start at Bt2,040 at http://www.ThaiTicketMajor.com and (02) 262 3456. Learn more at http://www.BECTero.com and the “bectero” Facebook page.

Singer Jon Hendricks, ‘poet laureate of jazz,’ dies at 96

Jon Hendricks, a jazz singer whose compelling scat-style renditions and lyricizing of instrumental standards earned him the nickname “the James Joyce of jive,” has died in New York, his family told The New York Times. He was 96.

No cause of death was given.

Performers from trumpeter Wynton Marsalis to composer/playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda offered warm tributes on social media to a musician Downbeat magazine called “one of the most important vocalists in jazz history.”

Known in the 1950s and 1960s for his role in the popular vocal trio Hendricks, Lambert & Ross, he was considered a master of the art of scatting, rhythmically putting nonsense words — “Skap-a-dap-a-doodily-bap” — to driving and intricate jazz tunes.

Hendricks was also considered a pioneer of “vocalese,” writing lyrics for instrumental songs, including standards like “Desifinado” and “Along Came Betty.”

The winner of multiple Grammy awards, he was sometimes called the “poet laureate of jazz.”

– Invitation from the ‘Bird’ –

Born John Carl Hendricks in 1921 in Newark, Ohio, he was one of 15 children of an itinerant Methodist pastor.

His mother led the church choir, and he began singing at age seven. By 10, he later said, “I was a local celebrity.”

As a teenager, he sang on the radio with another Toledo native, Art Tatum, later to become one of jazz’s most celebrated pianists.

After military service in World War II, Hendricks briefly studied law before taking up an offer made when legendary jazzman Charlie “Bird” Parker was passing through Toledo, and he headed to New York.

It was there that he, Dave Lambert and Annie Ross joined in 1956 to form their vocal trio, soon ranked by Melody Maker magazine as the world’s top vocal group. Their album “High Flying” won a Grammy Award.

Hendricks later pursued a solo career, touring in Europe and Africa before settling down for a time in California’s Bay area, where he worked as a newspaper jazz critic and taught college courses in jazz.

Active to the end, he earlier this year finished lyricizing the 1957 Miles Davis album “Miles Ahead.” And when the project premiered in New York, 96-year-old Hendricks was in attendance.

More magic on its way with Bruno Mars

music November 23, 2017 09:05

Multiple Grammy-winner Bruno Mars, who’s sold more than 170 million singles and 26 million albums, returns to Thailand next April 30 for a show at Impact Arena in Muang Thong Thani.

The “24K Magic World Tour” looks set to repeat the success of his first full-length outing, “Moonshine Jungle” in 2013, for which two million tickets were snatched up and 155 dates were sold out.

Mars – who’s been on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine – has had a number of high-profile TV appearances, including the 2016 American Music Awards, Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and America television’s “Saturday Night Live”.

Critically acclaimed as a singer, songwriter, producer and director, Mars recently dominated the charts with the single “Uptown Funk”, a certified diamond hit that made history as the longest-leading Billboard Hot 100 single of the 2010s.

Mars returned to the Super Bowl half-time stage last year to perform alongside Beyonce and Coldplay. His 2014 appearance helped make NFL history as the second-most-watched Super Bowl Halftime Show ever, and Mars was the youngest artist ever to serve as headliner.

According to Billboard, Mars scored his first five Hot 100 No 1 singles faster than any male artist since Elvis Presley, and he’s had 35 of them to date.
