Rush for tickets as Springsteen hits Broadway

NEW YORK – Eager to see her musical hero Bruce Springsteen in the intimate confines of a Broadway theater, Laura Effinger quickly registered online as a verified fan who would supposedly have dibs on seats.

When tickets went on sale, the website told her she was on standby and to watch her phone for a code.

And so she waited. The notification never came — but tickets were already being advertised on resale sites for thousands of dollars.

“This is such a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience that it’s a very valuable ticket right now. I think it’s unfortunate that people are taking advantage of that,” said Effinger, who owns a photo studio in South Carolina.

Effinger, who has seen “The Boss” three times before, said she would still fly to New York “in a heartbeat” with her mother if she were able to snag tickets.

Springsteen — one of rock’s most legendary performers who for decades has packed arenas with marathon, fatigue-defying concerts — on Tuesday starts four months of shows at Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre which has just 960 seats.

Tickets instantly became some of the most coveted in the United States. Hours before Tuesday’s opening, seats on leading resale site StubHub were going for as high as $6,000. Springsteen had been selling the tickets between $75 and $800.

Ticket buyers have come from nearly every US state and 30 different countries, according to StubHub.

Trying to verify fans

Hoping to curb exorbitant resale prices, Springsteen joined leading seller Ticketmaster for its new “verified fan” program — which uses algorithms to determine if a person will likely go, and then sends a one-time code when tickets go on sale.

Ticketmaster, part of concert giant Live Nation, said it had been successful and that fewer than three percent of Verified Fan tickets wound up on the secondary market.

But that doesn’t mean there were enough for everyone who wanted to go. Springsteen needs to play more than 20 Broadway shows to reach the same number of fans he does in a night 15 blocks away at Madison Square Garden.

And no one can stop fans, no matter how devoted to The Boss, from deciding they would rather earn thousands of dollars by selling their tickets.

Effinger, the photographer from South Carolina, said she was not angry with Springsteen — in contrast to some livid comments seen in online Springsteen fan forums.

“He is trying so desperately to get tickets into the hands of people who want to see him, like myself. Unfortunately, it’s failing,” she said.

Springsteen already extended his Broadway run once and, reaching out to disappointed fans, started a last-minute lottery for $75 tickets.

The 68-year-old “Born in the U.S.A.” singer, whose songs speak of the struggles of working-class Americans, said he decided to go to Broadway after performing in January at the White House — a solemn concert that then president Barack Obama arranged as a gift to departing staff.

Springsteen told The New York Times last week that he liked the greater intimacy. Unlike his high-octane shows with his E Street Band, Springsteen will perform alone with a piano and guitars.

Finding a solution

Taylor Swift, planning a tour for her upcoming album, has also signed up to Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan program.

New York has tried to curb soaring ticket prices through legal means, including banning purchases by automatic “bots” and speculators who do not have tickets in hand.

In a study last year, state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said a key problem was that more than half of tickets to major shows are not even offered to the public — instead being set aside to promoters or other insiders.

To Mark Perry, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative Washington think tank, the issue is a simple one of supply and demand — people want tickets and there are not enough.

The only way to prevent the secondary market is to increase the number of shows or to price tickets “closer to market value when they are first sold,” he said.

“And that is where the resistance comes in as most artists such as Springsteen don’t want to be seen as greedy,” Perry said.

“I guess they don’t always know how to optimize that tradeoff,” he said. “They would rather have fans upset that they can’t get tickets than to be known as an artist who overcharges.”

American progressive rockers Dream Theater return to Bangkok for a fourth show

One of the best-loved progressive metal bands in the world and still going strong after more than 30 years, Dream Theater dropped into Thailand on Wednesday night to the delight of its legions of Thai fans who packed into Thunder Dome, Muang Thong Thani determined not to miss an all-too-rare opportunity to hear the band live.

Back in this part of the world on their “Images, Words & Beyond” tour, Dream Theatre first came to the kingdom back in 2006 and returned two years later as they celebrated the 15th anniversary of “Images and Words”, the band’s only album to be certified gold by the RIAA and which remains their best-selling album to date, selling more than 600,000 copies.

A decade later and this time marking the 25th anniversary of that milestone album, the band was visibly pleased at the warm welcome from Thai fans. Indeed James LaBrie even told the audience that he was happy with the way they sang along to the hook of “Pull Me Under”, the single that earned the band considerable commercial success and appeared in the 2008 video game “Guitar Hero World Tour”.

Divided into two acts with 20-minute break in between, the concert’s first half comprised eight songs, including a cover of Jaco Pastorius’ “Portrait of Tracy” performed by bassist John Myung, from “Falling into Infinity” in 1997 to “The Astonishing” in 2016. Screams erupted as they swung into “The Dark Eternal Night” from “Systematic Chaos”, “The Bigger Picture” from “Dream Theater” before slowing down in “Hell’s Kitchen” featuring John Petrucci’s melodic guitar solo. They followed up with “The Gift of Music” and “Our New World”, from their second concept album “Astonishing”.

Fans roared their appreciation as the first notes of “As I Am” from “Train of Thought” were played and reached a crescendo at an excerpt of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”, the single that propelled Metallica to worldwide fame. The first act closed with the stunning song, “Breaking All Illusions”, a showcase for Petrucci’s nimble fingerwork and Jordan Rudess’s majestic keyboard.

After the intermission, the progressive metal quintet came out on stage and took the audience back to 1992 playing the entire “Images and Words” album. The set opened with “Pull Me Under”, and followed up with “Another Day” featuring a tight bass solo by Myung, “Take the Time” with Petrucci doing the solo honours  and “Metropolis Pt 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper” with Mike Mangini, who became the band’s permanent drummer is 2011, giving an exuberant demonstration of his prowess with his massive kit. Rudess performed a keyboard solo in “Wait for Sleep” and the band closed out the concert with “Learning to Live” and “Under a Glass Moon.”

Back on stage for an encore, the band performed the 23-minute track “A Change of Seasons”, a fitting end to a fond farewell.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Rock band Aerosmith announced Tuesday it was cutting short its tour of South America after frontman Steven Tyler flew back to the US due to “unexpected medical issues.”

“To everybody in South America – Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Mexico – I’m very sorry and feel like I’ve let you down,” the 69-year-old wrote in a statement posted on Twitter, which did not specify the nature of the illness.

“I won’t be able to continue the last four shows of this tour. I flew back to the US on doctor’s orders last night.

“Please not to worry,” he continued, “I am not in a life-threatening condition, but I need to deal with this right away and get some rest and medical care immediately in order to sustain and maintain my future performances… As they say, ‘We humans make plans, and God laughs.'”

The band played on Monday night in Sao Paulo after performing on Thursday in Rio de Janeiro. The cities cut from the tour were Curitiba, Brazil; Santiago, Chile; Rosario, Argentina; and Monterrey, Mexico.

Aerosmith announced last year they were doing a “farewell” tour for 2017 but stopped short of saying the shows would be their finale.

The Boston-bred hard rock group formed in 1970 and are behind such classics as “Dream On,” “Walk This Way” and “Janie’s Got a Gun.”

Late Frank Zappa back on tour as hologram

NEW YORK – Experimental rocker Frank Zappa, prolific in his life and even in death through a string of posthumous releases, is heading back on tour as a hologram.

Zappa’s family trust on Thursday announced that the hologram concerts would begin in 2018 and hoped the resurrected Zappa would jam again with some of his still-living collaborators including metal guitar virtuoso Steve Vai.

The family said it was also at work on a production of “Joe’s Garage The Musical” — a rock opera about the government seizing control of the music business, which did not appear on stage until after Zappa’s death — with Zappa himself starring by hologram.

Zappa — whose music merged hard rock and jazz with absurdist lyricism inspired by Dadaist art — died in 1993 of prostate cancer.

His wife Gail took over his estate and brought his total output to some 100 album releases. But her death in 2015 set off a feud, with their son Ahmet and daughter Diva in charge of the trust and their two eldest children, Dweezil and Moon, required to seek permission to profit on their father’s music.

Ahmet indicated hope for reconciliation in a statement announcing the hologram tour, saying it would be his “greatest wish” to see Dweezil and Moon performing with Frank Zappa.

Jeff Pezzuti, head of the firm Eyellusion which will design the hologram, called Frank Zappa “an incredible musician, unmatched in his output,” who “tackled so many different genres and influenced a generation of artists that would go on to help further shape rock and pop for decades to come.”

Zappa’s notable fans include the Czech Republic’s first post-communist leader Vaclav Havel, who made the Los Angeles rocker an unofficial cultural ambassador.

Holograms broke into the mainstream in 2012 when slain rap legend Tupac Shakur appeared at the Coachella music festival.

Holograms have become increasingly common since then, with late stars ranging from Billie Holiday to Liberace taking the stage again.

But the technology has also faced critics who question the quality and taste, with Whitney Houston’s estate scuttling a hologram it deemed insufficiently realistic.

New York DJ-producer Ahzee will be performing in Bangkok on Friday (September 22) and the Hollywood Club in Pattaya on Saturday.

Anyone who says they haven’t heard of him will have heard “Burn It Down”, his bouncy 2016 single featuring Australian rapper Faydee.

That was the track that provocative Thai singer Baitoey turned into a viral phenomenon following a performance this past June – something about asking for “a snake to come out”, as we understand it.

Within a day the “Burn It Down” video on YouTube had been watched two million times in Thailand. It’s past 150 million now, adding in re-mixes and dance covers.

Ahzee has since taken to Facebook on multiple occasions to thank folks for making his song No 1 in Thailand and neighbouring countries. Here’s what he’s saying lately:

“Ahzee family in Thailand and Asia, I thank you so much for all your support and all the love. I can’t wait to see you guys soon. We’re definitely going to do a big tour there. I hope to meet so many of you!”

Ahzee started spinning in his parents’ basement as a hobby, but the music quickly became his life.

He has not only raised the bar in creating innovative EDM sounds, but also loves drawing inspiration from his fans.

In the last three years he has produced several chart-topping tracks in Europe, including the No 1 debut single “Born Again”, “Drums” and “King”. Major labels including BIP, Happy Music, Sony, Universal and Ultra Records are in on the Ahzee factory.

His music can be classified as progressive and electro house with some Mediterranean influences.

Muzik Move Records recently held its first concert “Move Live”, bringing together its artists Ronnadet “Namm” Wongsaroj, Patravee “Earth” Srisantisuk, Prem, 15 Labs, Dose, Indigo and Trip to the stage of Thonglor Len Sod, a pub & restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 55 and streaming the whole show live on Line TV.

Indigo was the first onstage, performing its new song, “Yang Khong” (“Kept”) and delighted the crowd with its electro-pop sound and Krisakorn “Sun” Tharapit’s mellow vocals.

Electronic-rock band 15 Labs stunned with a tidy mix of old and new songs, while Dose took the fans back to the ’80s in its tight set despite vocalist Arin Panuves being forced to perform from a wheelchair with his left leg swathed in bandages.

Earth Patravee showed off her abilities of singing and playing electric guitar, Prem offered his hit “Khae Ther Thi Tongkarn” and Namm Ronnadet closed the concert as his fans held up neon signs and presented him with flowers.
