Surrounded by lush greenery, the new Rosewood Luang Prabang offers an escape into the elegance of the colonial era

THE CHARM of French colonial elegance and the slow life are turning Luang Prabang into the hottest destination in Southeast Asia not just for tourists but also for luxury hotel chains, with the brand-new Rosewood the latest resort to open in the ancient royal capital of Laos.

Offering six-star hospitality and great cuisine, the Bt600-million project owned by Thailand-based Elysian Development, has been five years in the making, transforming the lush valley on the edge of Luang Prabang into an upmarket holiday retreat reminiscent of the late colonial era.

Hilltop Tent

“My family operates two boutique hotels in Luang Prabang and I decided to build this new project to provide travellers with more of a luxury experience. The location is perfect for tented-style villas and we are fortunate to hold a 50-year lease on the land,” Rena Udomkunnatum, Elysian Development’s managing director, explains.

“In line with Unesco’s restrictions, our designs stay true to Luang Prabang’s traditions. The roofs are the basic shades used by local residents used, all the buildings are low-rise and the architecture is a blend of classic Laotian and French colonial style. This matches Rosewood’s philosophy of giving ITS properties an authentic ambience.”

Just a 10-minute drive from the heart of the old town into the countryside, the resort occupies 16 rai and boasts 23 one-of-a-kind guestrooms, villas and tents, designed by acclaimed architect Bill Bensley.

The options include Riverside Rooms, Suites and Villas, Waterfall Pool Villas and Hilltop Tents, ranging in floor area from 48 to 90 square metres. During the low season, the room rates start from US$670 (Bt22,100) and go up to $1,200.

Designed on the theme of a Laotian Hill Station, each unit has a private swimming pool, oversized balcony and outdoor wooden bathtub that allow guests full privacy, extra comfort and a chance to indulge in the beauty of nature.

Riverside Villa

“It’s the one-of-a-kind place, embraced by a mountain range and waterfall. Today, we all live in fast-paced city and this is the good place to resource ourselves by enjoying the slow life. It’s a small property from a group with experience in luxury accommodation,” says Sonia Cheng, Rosewood Hotel Group’s chief executive.

“The design celebrates local culture and history, blending arts, cuisine and a holistic approach that links with our DNA philosophy – ‘A Sense of Place’,” she continues.

Inspired by the notion of a gracious French host – perhaps a diplomat or retired expatriate – the Bill Bensley team sourced and collected furnishings and artefacts for thoughtful placement in specific rooms to reflect the personalities and interests of travellers who might have stayed here over a century ago.

Guests might discover newspaper clippings and illustrations from the early 1900s, vintage Kodak cameras, the cutting-edge technology of the time, even croquet mallets from 1900 in homage to French obsession with the sport when a female team from that country competed in that year’s Olympic games.

A bathroom in a Riverside Villa

“It’s a beautiful valley. I created a sprawling walkway along a waterway and the rooms are designed one by one to give different details of the different stories,” Bensley tells The Nation.

“We have taken great care in looking for original artefacts, paintings and illustrations for each individual room, combing through Parisian flea markets, antique stores and vintage-ware collections. It was important to capture how the travellers of the time were hosted and made to feel at home.”

Hemmed in by a lush tropical forest, the opulent lobby is graced with a fireplace and elephant-inspired furnishings, reminding guests that this land was once a path taken by elephants as they made their way to the creek.

Overlooking to the landscaped garden, the Great House restaurant serves a selection of farm-to-table-dining and Lao specialities influenced by the cuisine of historic royal courts.

The Gruest House restaurant

The adjacent Elephant Bridge Bar presents a stunning view of the river, perfect for a relaxing evening drink or whiling the afternoon away. Guests can enjoy light snacks, simple and healthy fare, and refreshing hand-crafted cocktails and beverages that use local herbs and spices for a tropical twist.

For complete relaxation, the Rosewood Spa soothes body and soul with the traditional holistic wellbeing programmes that combine Laotian healing remedies and Western techniques.

All therapies draw from nature to support life and healthy living, while experts help guests select native herbs, plants and fruits from the organic garden in the resort to create the tailored treatments.

Thailand fast-tracks Riviera Project to promote coastal provinces

Travel log June 28, 2018 10:21

Under a comprehensive Master Plan prepared by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the provinces of Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon and Ranong will be upgraded under the “Thailand Riviera” scheme to tap their full potential for natural, cultural, historical, gastronomic, sports and community-based tourism.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will spearhead the marketing push of the area with the focus on generating tourism revenue for the residents, communities and local businesses in the four coastal provinces.

The Thai government and related agencies will be closely involved in all aspects of tourism management, conservation and restoration in line with the policy direction of the National Tourism Development Plan to more equitably distribute income nationwide, upgrade rural areas, provide better accessibility, and improve facilities and services for visitors.

The Master Plan shows that the four provinces have diverse tourism assets, as follows:

  • 25 national parks and water parks;
  • 528 Kms of coastline;
  • 37 beaches, 10 bays, and 25 islands;
  • 70 Royal Projects and Royal Initiatives;
  • 6 community-based tourism projects.

Man-made attractions include several golf courses, theme parks, numerous community malls/outlets and a variety of Sports Tourism facilities suitable for triathlons, marathons, swimming, biking, mountain climbing and canoeing.

Hua Hin, the best known beach resort in the region, also holds an annual Jazz Festival, alongside a boundless choice of culinary fare and gastronomic delights.

There is also more than adequate transportation access:

  • Land: Highway No. 4 (Phetchkasem Road);
  • Sea: Ferry Service linking Khao Takiap pier in Prachuap Khiri Khan and Bali Hai Pier, Chon Buri.
  • Air: Hua Hin Airport, Chumphon Airport, and Ranong Airport.
  • Railway: Southern route.

Minister of Tourism and Sports Mr. Weerasak Kowsurat stressed that the entire development process must be implemented in a comprehensive, coordinated manner that pays equal attention to economic and ecological issues.

For example, infrastructure development will be especially important to ensure proper fresh water supplies and prevent water conflicts between the agriculture and tourism sectors. The platform of the Hua Hin Railway Station, a local heritage site dating back to the days when it was used by members of the Royal Family visiting the Mrigadayavan Summer Palace of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), will be upgraded to reflect its unique design and architecture.

The plan also mentions opportunities for visitors to enjoy the local seafood, adventure activities and ecotourism, and the development of night markets, especially for local artists to showcase their works.

Specific niche-market projects will include development of the Thailand Riviera as a “Global Health Tourism Hub”, organisation of world-class sporting events for golf, tennis, shopping festivals, and world-class summer education courses.

The visitor experience will be enhanced by upgraded stops at petrol stations with clean toilets, lockers, luggage storage, CCTV and Wi-Fi.

The plan has long been in the cards, but implementation was delayed due to successive changes in governments. It was originally approved by the Thai Cabinet in February, 2006, and again in August, 2014, when the Ministry of Tourism and Sports was given responsibility for executing the plan in an integrated and coordinated matter.

Under the current Government, the plan was approved once again on March 6, 2018, at the mobile Cabinet meeting in Phetchaburi province.

One important part of the project has been construction of a scenic 680-km highway from Bangkok, which runs directly along the coastline. The world-class highway, which will include bike lanes, is expected to be completed in five years. About 200 km have been completed. A 49-kilometre stretch is currently under construction.

In 2017, the four provinces received a total of 14,023,347 Thai and foreign visitors, a rise of 4.52 percent year-on-year. The average expenditure per trip per person was 5,141 Baht, generating an estimated 72.105 billion Baht in tourism income (up 8.85 percent year-on-year).

On June 1, 2018, Mr. Weerasak also enlisted the support of the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) in a meeting with Mr. Zurab Pololikashvili, the UNWTO Secretary General. The UNWTO has undertaken to provide technical and marketing support.

Mr. Weerasak notes that the Riviera project will have nationwide benefits thanks to the launched ferry service from Hua Hin to Pattaya, which has cut travelling time by more than six hours between the West and East coasts of the Gulf of Thailand.

Bicycle mechanic sought as ‘low carbon tourism officer’ for Koh Mak

Tourism June 25, 2018 13:29

By The Nation

Koh Mak in Trat is looking to hire a bicycle repairperson who can also do triple duty as a photographer/social-media marketer and an ambassador for “low carbon tourism”.

Sutharak Sunthornwipat, deputy manager of the third office of Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA), on Monday unveiled the recruitment programme when he visited the island off Trat’s mainland.

He went there to inspect 100 new bicycles that DASTA has given to the island’s local administration to promote biking tourism as part of the Koh Mak Low Carbon Tourist Destination project.

Sutharak said DASTA initiated the low carbon tourism project after the island had recently won the PATA Gold Award for Low Carbon Holiday destinations.

DASTA bought and handed over the 100 new bicycles to the island so tourists could ride around the island instead of driving vehicles, Sutharak said. The project thus needs to hire a bike repairperson for five months at Bt30,000 a month to keep up the machines, he said.

But the bike mechanic will wear the title of “low carbon tourism officer” because a large part of the job would involve acting as an ambassador for the island and the programme. The work will include taking photos of tourism activities and sharing them on social networks daily

The officer will have to live on the island and talk to tourists and tourism operators and share their experiences to promote low carbon tourism on the island, Sutharak added.

New technology platform launches

sleep June 19, 2018 13:45

By The Nation

Meritus Hotels & Resorts joins hands with Travel Prologue for a new technology platform that delivers real-time data on room availability to traditionally offline contractors from travel agencies and wholesalers, to corporate travel intermediaries.

An awardwinning Asian hospitality brand, Meritus manages the Marina Mandarin Singapore, Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, Langkawi and the iconic Mandarin Orchard Singapore.

“Our strategically located hotels offer top accommodation choices for travellers visiting Singapore and Malaysia,” said Adrian Tan, regional vice presidentsales & revenue strategy, Meritus Hotels & Resorts.

“The launch of this new wholesale distribution platform marks a milestone in our continued thrust to improve our partnership with our offline contractors, while allowing us greater efficiency in the management of our distribution channels. As a result, we enhance our overall yield as well as build up a more robust base demand in order to maximise revenue for our hotels.”

Through Travel Prologues’ Trip Affiliates Network (TA Network) hotel platform solutions, hotels and their traditional travel agents and wholesalers will be able to collaborate more effectively to raise their direct business volume with one another.

In particular, hotels will now be empowered to tap on their offline travel distribution partners to sell any online tactical or promotional rates that have typically only been made available to online travel agents.

The contracting and booking process of a traditional wholesale agent with a hotel typically requires both the hotel and agent manually updating and booking inventory, and getting booking confirmations.

The TA Network platform is designed to leverage technology solutions to facilitate their direct connectivity and automate their inventory management processes so that the hotels and travel agents can eliminate potential human errors in manually maintaining hotel contracts.

“In addition to benefiting from higher yield, greater efficiency and productivity, our hotel clients will also be able to exercise greater control over its distribution channels – thereby reducing the risk of overbooking rooms, particularly during peak travel periods. In the process, they also significantly improve the booking experience for their customers,” says Ho Siang Twang, executive director of Travel Prologue.
