Trin Nakara says it is working with foreign investors to launch a Bt40 billion investment project dubbed “Trin Nakara Golden Triangle” aiming to develop over 3,139 rai in a special economic zone in Chiang Saen district, Chiang Rai province, to transform it to “the City of Harmonious Living”.

It will also work with US based-Trident Support to construct the world’s tallest free-standing flagpole at 189 metres.

The flagpole will be recorded in the Guinness World Records, the firm said.

Trin Nilprasert, CEO of Trin Innovation, said: “Chiang Saen has high potential in various aspects as the government has designated Chiang Rai province to be one of the special economic development zones.

“Moreover, Chiang Rai has executed a development plan under the concept of Tourism Innovation Thailand 4.0, aiming to transform Chiang Rai into “the city of commerce, investment, agriculture and tourism, enriched with Lanna culture and enabling happy living”. We see unique opportunities as Chiang Saen has a strategic significance,” Trin said.

“It is bordered by Myanmar and Laos in the region known as the golden triangle in the north-south economic corridor, where several development projects will be implemented, including infrastructure from southern China to Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.

“As three districts of Chiang Rai have been designated to be special economic zones, the government will prepare infrastructure for international transport and logistics, and offer benefits in investment, finance and customs,” Trin said.

“On the Mekong, Chiang Saen is well known for its natural beauty, rich traditions, cultural heritage and friendly people. Chiang Saen was the location of the Yonok kingdom, so it has historical sites and cultural heritage.

“Trin Nakara Golden Triangle has interested investors from Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, the United States and China. With more than Bt40 billion investment, it covers three sub-districts – Wiang-Nok, Pasak and Yonok.”

Trin said the project would include hotels, a health centre, condominiums, a mall, souvenir shops and an international convention centre.

More Chinese tourists’ arrived in Thailand in November following the exemption of visa on arrival fee, although the growth is still negative, the Tourism and Sports Ministry reported.

The VoA fee has been exempted for Chinese tourists since November 13 as a measure to attract more visitors to the kingdom. The measure is due to expire on January 13.

The ministry reported that 675,129 Chinese tourists visited Thailand in November, a fall by 14.63 per cent, but the situation improved compared to October when the drop was 19.8 per cent..

The ministry said the revenue generated by Chinese tourists in November was Bt36.454 billion, a fall of 10.36 per cent compared to the same month last year.

It said the number of all foreign tourists was 3.177 million, an increase of 4.54 per cent compared to the same period last year. It was an improved situation from October when the number of all foreign tourists shrank by 0.51 per cent.

The revenue generated by foreign tourists in November was Bt167.417 billion, an increase of 5.18 per cent compared to the same month last year.

From January to November, 34.431 foreign tourists have visited the kingdom, an increase of 7.53 per cent.

Chinese tourists remain on top with 9.697 million visiting Thailand from January to November, generating Bt536.278 billion of revenue.

For 48 years the Dusit Thani Bangkok has been a memory factory. Just ask two long-time admirers whose husbands-to-be proposed to them there

“The Dusit Thani is like my second home – my heart fell when I heard it was going to be torn down,” says Rosalin Alexander, whose family had a shop there the whole time she was growing up.

A beloved Bangkok landmark, the Dusit Thani began life in 1970 as the tallest building in the capital, its eye-catching architecture a gleaming testament to Thailand’s new-found modernity.

But its long run as a posh inn ends on January 5, when the original structure will tumble floor by floor to make way for a Bt36.7-billion mixed-use project – new hotel included – that will open in 2023.

In collaboration with Central Pattana, the hotel’s owners – Dusit International – have planned a sprawling amalgam of residences, retail zones and office spaces along with Mark II of the hotel.

Rosalin’s parents were among the first retailers to take up lobby space at the Dusit Thani, opening Alex and Co Jeweller. She has witnessed the hotel’s history almost from the beginning and amassed a lot of fond memories there over the course of 48 years.

“I hung out at the hotel after school, reading imported comics,” she told The Nation Weekend. “When I was a teenager, my cousin and I loved seeing the foreign superstars who stayed there.”

The five-star hotel’s guest list is indeed impressive. Entertainers lodged in its suites included Rod Stewart, Whitney Houston, Tom Jones, Jackie Chan and Gwyneth Paltrow, and in more recent times the Pet Shop Boys, Coldplay and South Korean stars Rain and Super Junior.

“It was like Thailand’s first big entertainment destination,” Rosalin said. “The Napailai Ballroom was considered the best concert hall in the country and hosted catwalk fashion shows and major weddings. I saw my first concert with overseas acts there – the New Seekers and the Osmonds. And then there was the nightlife at the Bubble, the coolest discotheque of the era.”

The 23rd-floor restaurant Tiara sparkled with big-spending diners who gasped at views of Bangkok never before seen and were often treated to cabaret theatre.

Rosalin warmly recalls dining with her parents at Tiara. “For a little girl, it was so amazing to see how beautiful Bangkok looked from up high.”

Rosalin and Rassamee Rungjang, 74, who used to work at Dusit Thani, both share one great memory of the place – it is where their beaux proposed to them.

“In a small corner of the coffee shop, my husband Paul surprised me by asking ‘Will you marry me?’” Rosalin giggled.

A young man named Prayong, who also worked at the hotel, popped the same question to Rassamee. Prayong later moved to Germany to work and Rassamee, missing him, “often went to the Tiara and gazed at the sky”.

He has since died. “I still miss him,” she said.

Their son, Arin Rungjang, became a prominent artist who never forgot his fascination with the vista beyond the Tiara windows. He recreated the skyline in an installation shown at Ver Gallery in 2007. Its title was “Rassamee Rungjang”.

Fond memories have been inescapable in a series of events taking place to bid the hotel farewell. They began earlier this month with the Thai Night Gala Dinner in the ballroom, at which 95 contestants from the Miss Universe pageant wore traditional Thai costumes.

This past Thursday there was “Together Moving Forward”, a thank-you party for hundreds of VIP guests, at which Koh Mr Saxman, Jennifer Kim and the Silpakorn Band entertained.

Another treat was the unveiling of paintings of the hotel done by invited top artists. Hotel owner Chanin Donavanik was pleased to see the spire rendered prominently – a trademark that replicated the soaring prang of Wat Arun.

It was Chanin’s mother, Thanpuying Chanut Piyaoui, who worked with Thai-Obayashi Corp to build the luxury 23-floor hotel. She aimed for and achieved international hotel standards, another first for Thailand.

Now it’s time to preserve the spirit of what’s being lost. Dusit International has commissioned Silpakorn University to document and help conserve the hotel’s most aesthetic flourishes in a project called “Dusit Thani’s Artistic Heritage”.

It will be a challenge indeed removing the Thai-motif decoration from the facade and the two columns in the restaurant Benjarong that were painted by hand by the late Paiboon “Than Kudt” Suwannakudt.

The project will extend to saving the various plant species on the grounds. The big trees – bodhi, banyan and frangipani – will be salvaged for replanting later around the new hotel, and other plants moved across Rama IV Road to Lumpini Park.

“Dusit Thani Bangkok is preparing to enter an exciting new chapter, and we look forward to continuing these same beliefs in the new version of the hotel, which is due to open in four years’ time,” Chanin said.

“Inspired by our heritage, the new Dusit Thani Bangkok will retain our distinctive brand of gracious hospitality, and will preserve our rich artistic and architectural heritage. At the same time, we will provide new experiences, for new generations of travellers, ensuring we can cement our status as Thailand’s leading hospitality company while delighting guests, and bringing value to our community, for many years to come.”

Thailand would benefit from home-sharing tourist economy: Agoda

THAILAND shows its potential in becoming a hub of home-sharing market in Southeast Asia, according to executives of travel company Agoda.

Agoda is part of Booking Holdings, the world’s largest travel company by market value.

Peter L Allen, managing director of the public affairs department, says the home-sharing economy has been growing exponentially all over the world and the travel company believes the growth will continue and have a positive impact on the Asean economy and communities.

He said a Nielsen survey found that 78 per cent of respondents across Asia-Pacific were willing to share or rent their own assets or services, and 81 per cent were willing to use products or services within the sharing economy.

“Travellers are increasingly looking for accommodation options that cater to their unique situations and needs, whether they are travelling in groups (including families with children), have specific dietary requirements, or are looking for customised experiences,” said Allen.

“Even business travel will contribute to the demand for home-sharing accommodation, as more travellers combine leisure activities and add excursions to their business trips,” he said.

Allen said that as one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, Thailand already has all the potential to become a hub for the home-sharing market in Asean. Thailand and its people are known for their hospitality and will make positive contributions to the thriving home rentals market, he added.

“The country is embracing this new trend and we also believe that the government would like to support this as well. All stakeholders will need to work together to gain the benefits,” he said.

Allen said that compared to the traditional rental services, home-sharing offers more choice of accommodation and price points for travellers, who vary in their requirements, needs and budgets.

From the hosts’ perspective, the home-sharing economy helps homeowners supplement their income and help pay for property upgrades and renovation, mortgage and rental costs, daily living expenses, children’s education and retirement savings, according to a press release from the company.

“Communities will also benefit from the home-sharing economy, as the increased foot traffic from short-term rentals supports local businesses and creates jobs as travellers spend money on food, drinks, shopping, local transportation and entertainment. Additional tax income generated from short-term rentals may be put towards civic programmes, from fire and police departments and welfare services to destination marketing support, education and local arts,” he added.

Allen said that the travel space is evolving quickly, which brings in constant new challenges and opportunities.

“Disruption is not always negative. If we look specifically at shared accommodations, they have the potential to expand the size of the travel market, spread wealth by bringing revenue to hosts and local businesses, create new jobs and even increase sustainability,” he said.

“Challenges faced by the players in the hospitality industry within Thailand and around the world can be overcome through discussion and an understanding of what the benefits can be for all stakeholders. Regulators and legislators need to work together with hosts, guests and communities to find a mutually suitable solution, especially in popular tourist destinations such as Thailand,” said Allen.

Allen and Robert Rosenstein, the founder and chairman of online travel giant Agoda Company Pte Ltd, have co-authored “At Home Around the World: The Short-term Rentals Handbook for Guests, Hosts, Neighbors and Governments”.

The book cites policies, trends and data behind forecasts showing explosive industry growth. It presents data about the massive growth and positive economic impact of the home-sharing market around the world. They draw on research to discuss the rise in home-sharing and to argue for its value and benefits to homeowners, travellers and communities large and small.

“Through our conversations with regulators and neighbourhood advocates around the world, we realised that governments are struggling with how to understand and anticipate the role that home-sharing plays in their cities. As this relatively new industry has emerged, a patchwork of regulations has been created,” said Rosenstein.

“We want to collect the lessons from these natural experiments and start to showcase how the successful approaches work,” he said.

The book notes that the global sharing economy is growing at an annual rate of 30 per cent, compared to a forecasted 3 per cent annual growth rate for the “traditional rental market”, and is expected to equal that market by 2025.

In addition, total global revenues for the home-sharing industry alone are expected to reach US$169 billion (Bt5.53 trillion) by the end of this year, a growth level two to four |times as fast as the overall global economy.

Chinese and Thai companies have signed three documents at northern Thailand’s Chiang Saen port in a bid to develop boat trips along the Lancang-Mekong River.

China’s Yunnan Provincial Tourism Investment Co and Thailand’s New Chiang Saen Group Co are the main signers of these cooperative documents, which cover marketing a current boat service on the Mekong that would take tourists to view Thailand, Laos and Myanmar in a single day trip.

They will also launch a boat service from Chiang Saen port in northern Thailand to Jinghong in China’s Yunnan Province and also to Luang Prabang in Laos and Kengtung in Myanmar.

“We are trying to connect tourist services and attractions along the Lancang-Mekong River,” Xu Lianbiao of Yunnan Provincial Tourism Investment said. “We are also developing a wild elephant centre in the northern Lao province of Xayaburi and ecological tourism,” he added.

Thailand put forward a vision called “five Chiang cities, four countries”, which seeks close tourism cooperation between Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Jinghong, Kengtung and Luang Prabang, Xu said.

“The joint patrols from China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand make it safe to sail on the Mekong River.”

Chiang Saen’s old port is to be developed into a mega-tourism port, mayor of Wiang Chiang Saen municipality Chayagrit Nissaisook said.

The mayor said the Tourism Authority of Thailand had made a master plan to develop the port to the scale of an international airport, with duty-free shops and restaurants to welcome tourists, especially from China.

“The investment will be at a minimum of Bt39 million to firstly realise the plan that we may be able to attract more than Bt100 million,” he added.

Yunnan Provincial Tourism Investment launched its boat service in Chiang Saen Port in October and tourists can now shop on Laos’ Don Sao, an island with a separate duty-free zone.

Recipe for  SUCCESS

Corporate December 22, 2018 01:00

By   ASINA PORNWASIN
THE NATION Weekend

WHEN Yod Chinsupakul dreamed big to get an innovative technology venture off the ground in 2010, very few people spoke of startups in the country – and for good reason, the vibrant startup scene of today was yet to be born.

Into this space came Yod, a former UCLA Anderson MBA student. He set up Wongnai with the aim for it to become to the largest food and restaurant review online portal in Thailand. Eight years on, Wongnai is recognised as the leader in this segment, serving as the prime online destination for foodies wanting to do some research on culinary selections.

With this success behind him, the 35-year-old chief executive is intent on driving Wongnai forward into the top three of technology companies in Thailand. He aims to have at least 30 million users engaging with the Wongnai platform in their day-to-day lives within the next three years.

“We need to capture between 50 and 80 per cent of the total Internet users in Thailand to actively participate in Wongnai’s services,” he says. “At that time, the services will not be limited to food and beauty, but will be expanded to take in a lot more.”

Yod says it was only with the first mission achieved that he has plotted the even-bigger mission of expanding the services on the platform.

“Now, among the top 100 companies in Thailand, none is a tech company,” he says. “Once we asked ourselves, which is the giant Thai tech company? But the answer was, there is none. Thailand does not have giant tech companies like China’s Tencent and Alibaba and the US’s Facebook, Google, and Amazon.”

To achieve the goal, he concedes there is a lot more work to be done. First of all, the products, the Wongnai app and website, need to be improved and become meaningful to people, he says.

“It needs to have a lot more use cases, rather than only food. It also needs to have a lot of daily active users, rather than having weekly active users, which now number about 2 million,” Yod says.

“We need to have people using Wongnai every day in the same way they use Facebook and Line. Thus, only having food reviews is not enough. We need to add a lot more features in the use case of food and to have more use cases in other industry such as travel.”

Towards these goals, Wongnai is working to launch Wongnai POS (by FoodStory), as a Wongnai platform for restaurants that is connected to Wongnai’s services including reviews, deliveries and, lastly, payment.

Yod has built up the company to the point that it now has 300 employees, working under the company’s core values of impact, passion, speed and flexibility.

Wongnai has three million monthly active users using the Wongnai app, but counts a total of eight millions users of all Wongnai services every month.

“Having a much improved product alone is not enough to drive the company to achieve these goals,” Yod says. “All the teams need to be more efficient, from the management team to those in business development as well as the engineers and content teams. All of them need to know their customers and users well in order to develop and deliver the right product and service to address their needs effectively.

“We need to have more people in teams. It might not be on the scale of 10 times bigger but we need the team sizes to be four bigger than they are today in order to drive Wongnai to grow by 10 times to become a top tech company in Thailand,” says Yod.

Food will remain the biggest source of content on the portal, but it will also boast beauty, cooking and travel as developing areas for content.

Wongnai has the largest food and restaurant database in Thailand with 250,000 entries nationwide. It has around 2 million weekly active users for the Wongnai food feature. In terms of room to grow, Yod is looking at tripling this.

But, for his ambitions for Wongnai to grow by 10 times in order to become a giant tech company in Thailand, he says the new use cases, including beauty and travel, need to succeed.

“We need to expand from being a only food review app to becoming a lifestyle app that engages people every day,” Yod says.

The monetisation model of Wongnai is built around advertising and transactions. In the food area, Wongnai has partnered with Line Thailand to offer Wongnai Lineman delivery services that generate revenue from transactions. Voucher, deal and food events – with 20 events already this year – are the other ways that the company achieves monetisation of Wongnai in the food domain.

The lion’s share of the revenue – at 80 per cent – comes from media advertisements. And the revenue streams from transactions are very promising. With this in mind, Wongnai acquired FoodStory to develop Wongnai POS (by FoodStory) by connecting 250,000 restaurants to the Wongnai platform, which draws around 8 million users. The Wongnai POS platform is designed to serve the needs of restaurants and to seamlessly provide them with real-time datbase updates to the Wongnai platform.

Yod highlights what he calls Wongnai’s unique horizontal organisational structure, known as squad, which allows staff to work together across functional teams of development, content, marketing, sales, designer, and business development in order to serve the business domains of food, beauty, cooking and travel.

“It is likely that we have many small companies (squads) inside Wongnai,” he says. “Each cross-functional team consists of all people from the functional teams. They think, plan, and act together to achieve the goal themselves. I let them do all the stuff together covering strategic planning to action planning, and execution. The working culture here is to let everyone show their competencies.”

He says he has learned from Spotify and Netflix, successful companies that provide content streaming, which have squad teams operating inside them.

“I have found the squad team system works very works,” Yod says. “It is easier management since I can manage both vertical (functional team) and horizontal (squad team) at the same time.”

Another distinguishing characteristic of Wongnai is that it is a tech company that is driven not only by the technical team but by the media and content teams as the main resources of the company.

“This is so we can localise to fit to business in Thailand. If we play a role as the platform only, without offering content development for customers, our business performance might not be as good as it is now and we might not grow as rapidly as we expect to. We do what we need to in order to serve the market’s needs and that’s why customers love us.”

Yod has chosen to develop his own content production team since he believes that full-time staff have a long-term interest in the company, instead of those employed on a freelance or outsourcing basis.

“I have no background in content development and earlier I did not pay attention to creativity matters since I am an engineer, I focus only on high productivity and efficiency,” he says.

He is very strict on employees’ adherence to the company’s core values – impact, passion, speed and flexibility. He just sets goal for his teams and then gives them the freedom to create. He finds that this way of management, especially when it is executed by young people, is very effective.

Wongnai has become one of the most attractive companies in young people’s minds. Yod is confident that its hiring appeal is very strong.

“We run the company with these core values and that helps us to attract a lot more talent. It is likely that with this momentum under way that talent will attract talent,” he says.

The secret of Wongai’s success, Yod says, lies in its execution. “Wongnai’s mission is to connect people to good stuff and the company’s mission is to become a top 3 tech company in Thailand in the next three years,” he says.

“As for how we achieve that goal, it is to follow the company’s core values. Our staff need to be impacted people, they need to be productive and results oriented. Their passion lets them enjoy working and they use their heart in their work. Speed is a must since we need to compete at speed. Meanwhile, attention to flexibility opens to new things and lets us get ready to face changes.”

Another way of cementing the core values with staff are the town hall-style meetings that are held every three months. “These events are to let all staff show their capabilities. They also provide a charge in energy for employees and keep them connected to the CEO,” he says.

He concedes that he is a tough CEO, as he says he is serious about the work requirements and that the company’s culture must be results oriented. With this mindset, the staff are under pressure to succeed.

“A growth mindset is more important than skills. Thus, it is not only skills that he looks at when recruiting people who have potential, are a good fit for the organisation, and have the right mindset.

Yod characterises himself as a CEO who aims to keep on improving himself. Otherwise, he says would not be fit to lead others, he says. He wants his self-improvement ethos to serve as a model for his employees.

As for retirement, he has set no goals.

“Successful people in this world do not retire too early,” Yod says. “A goal is not to stop at ourselves, and instead look for meaningful ways in which we can create for the country or the world. When I am working, I don’t have cares. Working is a part of my life. Some days are not enjoyable, but as a whole, it is a life mission. I desire to create a bigger impact for the benefit of the country. Everyone always has be challenged to come forward in life.”

For Wongnai as a lifestyle app, if it is to become the No 1, it needs to have a better app, with better execution, smarter talent, and better care of customers while creating more value for users, he says. “Everyone want to produce a people’s lifestyle app, so that means we need to compete to get people to spend more time with us,” Yod says.

On the acquisition front, Wongnai has added blognone.com and Brandinside.asia. The content teams of these platforms are kept separate from Wongnai’s content team.

Yod describes Blognone as having good potential for further growth once merged with Wongnai’s aggressive and ambitious culture.

“We bought Blognone because it is a good company with potential,” he says. “The founder of Blognone is helping us as part of Wongnai’s management team. I think there are no boundaries between tech and media companies, as evidenced by Amazon’s purchase of the Washington Post.”

KFC has opened its 700th branch in Thailand at PTT petrol station on Suanluang-Bhudhasakorn Road in Kratumban District, Samut Sakhon, the company said in a press release on Friday.

Waewkanee Assoratgoon, general manager, KFC, YUM Restaurants International (Thailand), said: “KFC Thailand is pleased to celebrate our 700th branch, which is operated by Restaurants Development, our franchisee with a strong growth and the highest number of newly opened restaurants.

“The success of KFC came from various factors, including strong collaboration between KFC and all franchisees in developing our brand together, kitchen standard maintenance and delivery of KFC’s tasty recipe through the freshly prepared KFC menus everyday at our restaurants. Those factors are the tip to success of KFC worldwide.”

On average, staff at each branch prepare on average 1,500 to 2,000 pieces a day.

“KFC serves approximately 800,000 pieces of fried chicken to Thai customers per day or 292,000,000 pieces per year,” Waewkanee said.

Siamgas and Petrochemicals rating set at “BBB+”

Corporate December 21, 2018 15:05

By The Nation

TRIS Rating has affirmed the rating on Siamgas and Petrochemicals PLC (SGP) and its existing senior unsecured debenture ratings at “BBB+”, the company said in a press release on Friday.

The company said TRIS Rating also affirmed the rating on its existing partially guaranteed debenture at “A+” for 85 per cent and “A” for 70 per cent guarantee of the unpaid amount of principal and interest. The Credit Guarantee and Investment Facility (CGIF) (AAA/Stable) is the guarantor.

At the same time, TRIS Rating assigned the rating of “BBB+” to SGP’s newly proposed issue of up to Bt3 billion in senior unsecured debentures. SGP will use the proceeds to replace an existing bond which will be due in February 2019.

The company said the rating continues to reflect the company’s strong position as the second-largest liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) distributor in Thailand, its robust domestic distribution network, and its geographically diverse customer base.

The ratings, however, are partially offset by high business risk from SGP’s operations abroad which expose the company to fluctuations in LPG prices.

SGP’s financial result was better than TRIS Rating’s forecasts, thanks to the uptrend in LPG price. For the first nine months of 2018, SGP’s funds from operations (FFO) was about Bt2.4 billion. The annualised FFO to total debt ratio stood at 28.4 per cent, which was in line with our forecast. Under TRIS Rating’s base case assumption, SGP will generate the averaged FFO of Bt2.5 billon per annum and maintain the FFO to total debt ratio at over 20 per cent.
