Myanmar pig farming initiative announced

Breaking News October 18, 2018 15:31

The DaNa Facility, a UK government Department for International Development (DFID) funded programme, and De Heus Myanmar, an international animal feed business, have announced a joint investment of over US$3.2 million in a project focused on increasing the income and productivity of pig farmers across Myanmar.

They said it would be the largest single business investment in Kayah State.

The De Heus project will work to address significant issues facing domestic pork production in Myanmar, including problems related to the quality of feed, breeding stock, veterinary services, bio-security issues and the genetics of domestic pigs, which negatively affect pig producers and consumers.

The project will be investing across the swine production value chain in Myanmar, setting up the country’s first pig stud farm near Loikaw, Kayah State, and importing 250 sows with high-quality genetics from overseas.

De Heus will also establish demonstration farms in Kachin, Chin, Naypyitaw, Shan, Yangon, Bago, Mandalay, Pyay, Pathein and Kayah to provide training for around 10,000 farmers to improve their pig-rearing and management practices.

Alongside this work, De Heus will collaborate with Kayah State’s government and the national-level Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department to improve the business environment for pig farmers.

TMB reports 76 per cent jump in pre-provision 9-month operating profit

Corporate October 18, 2018 01:00

By The Nation

PRE-PROVISION operating profit (PPOP) at TMB Bank Plc (TMB) jumped 76 per cent in the first nine months of this year from the same period last year, reaching Bt26.36 billion.

Apart from the core operating performance, which the bank described as being moderately on track, the bank recognised a Bt12 billion gain from a deal to sell 65 per cent stakes of TMB Asset Management Co Ltd (TMBAM) for a partnership with Eastspring Investment (Singapore) and gain on a change in control from a subsidiary to a 35 per cent associated company.

With the higher PPOP, the bank set aside an additional provision from normal level in preparation for IFRS 9 and for asset quality management. Coverage ratio, as a result, increased to 157 per cent from 143 per cent on December 17. Net profit was recorded at Bt9.9 billion in the first nine months of this year, up 54 per cent from the first nine months of last year.

In the first nine months of this year the bank also expanded the deposit base by 4.5 per cent year to date (YTD) to Bt639 billion, driven mainly by a continuous growth in retail deposit through flagship products. TMB No-Fixed grew 13 per cent for the period, or by Bt30 billion, and ME Save, digital deposit, rose 10 per cent, or by Bt4.1 billion.

On the loan side, performing loans grew 3.3 per cent for the period to Bt646 billion, primarily boosted by retail loans, especially mortgage which increased 13 per cent or Bt18 billion. The bank has ensured mortgage portfolio quality by focusing on the salary-earner segment and loan sizes of less than Bt5 million. In terms of commercial loans, large corporate loans remained resilient and grew by 4 per cent for the period, or by Bt9 billion. Small SME loans are slowly recovering as the bank expanded loans selectively in order to ensure quality growth. As a result, its 9M18 small SME loans stayed relatively stable from the end of year.

The bank’s chief executive officer Piti Tantakasem said that TMB is committed to offering better products and services to customers/

“TMB is confident that partnering with Eastspring will create positive impact to both TMB and TMBAM customers as Eastpring has global expertise in asset management in various dimensions which will uplift TMBAM’s capabilities and strengthen TMB’s Open Architecture strategy,” Piti said. “Our customers will have more opportunities to get access to world-class products and services and more variety of leading foreign mutual funds. This will enable our customers to ‘Get More’.

“It has been four years since TMB Open Architecture was launched and has offered best-in-class products from leading asset management companies to all customer groups. The platform has continued to expand with Krungthai Asset Management as the latest asset management joining the open architecture platform in October.

Customers now can invest with nine leading assetmanagement providers at TMB,”he said.

KBank launches ‘superior’ strategy for online customers

Corporate October 18, 2018 01:00

Kasikorn Bank or KBank yesterday launching a “Superior” strategy to tempt the online customer segment, offering comprehensive digital business assistance and is preparing to provide wide-ranging financial facilities.

The strategy will cover five features including easy payment, enhanced liquidity, sales channels, K online shop space or KOS, and K Digibiz.

The strategy responds to the growing e-commerce trend and the demand of the online business segment, says the Bank’s president Patchara Samalapa.

He said that according to the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (a public organisation), e-commerce is growing steadily as business activities evolve.

In 2017, e-commerce transactions in Thailand totalled Bt2.81 trillion, of which Bt812.61 billion went to business-to-customer (B2C) trade. In 2018, e-commerce transactions were expected to grow 17 per cent to reach a total value of Bt949.12 billion, with transactions via social media, the e-marketplace and modern-trade online platforms under Brand.com accounting for 40, 35 and 25 per cent, respectively. Funds transfers via banks have become the most popular mode of payment, representing 65 per cent while the other 35 per cent are through credit cards.

KBank accounts are the most popular channel for customers making e-payment transactions. About 300,000 KBank customers are in online businesses, some of which are encountering multiple pain points in their operations. Those include intense competition, lack of online marketing knowledge, management difficulties, insufficient working capital and an inability to fulfil customers’ needs via various channels. These businesses are seeking to expand their sales channels, says Patchara.

Online business start-ups, as well as people interested in setting up their own enterprises, need to learn how to sell products successfully and how to choose the right goods, he said.
