Private port operator Sahathai Terminal has won a contract with Japan’s One Line to provide terminal handling services for both feeders and barges and related logistics services, such as container freight station and container depot services, starting in April.

One Line is a new company formed in the merging of Japanese liners NKY, MOL and K Line, Sahathai chief executive Sauwakun Karuchit said on Monday.

Sahathai also plans to invest around Bt300 million in 2018-2019 to purchase new machinery and equipment to expand capacity and capabilities of its container depot business through Bangkok Container Depot Services, its subsidiary.

Sauwakan said the company has, since the beginning of this year, seen continuous volume growth from both existing and new customers, all of which are global liners.

She said Sahathai would realise higher full-year revenues from its free-tax zone warehouses compared with the seven months’ earnings last year from servicing a luxury carmaker.

She expressed confidence in greater business volume through port and related logistics business-expansion strategies.

Sahathai currently delivers full-service solutions to more than 10 global liners, and its services not only differentiate it from other logistics companies but also allows it to better respond to all customers’ requirements, she said.

Bangkok Barge, its joint venture with Mitsui OSK Lines of Japan, has also dramatically increased its business volume.

Loan guarantee firm sets Bt500bn target under new fiveyear plan

Thai Credit Guarantee Corporation (TCGC)’s fiveyear plan for 2018-22 is to lift its outstanding loan guarantees to Bt500 billion, covering 450,000 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) nationwide, senior executive vice president Wichet Warakul said recently.

As of the end of 2017, TCGC recorded total outstanding loan guarantees of Bt360 billion covering 300,000 SMEs.

This year, TCGC will focus on SMEs who plan to upgrade or increase their production capacity. This follows its government approved Bt81 billion worth of loan guarantees between August 2017 and June 30 this year.

From August 2017 until February this year, TCGC has provided guarantees for loans under its increased capacity programme worth Bt51 billion. TCGC is confident that it will provide guarantees for the remaining Bt30 billion between now and June 30 this year, Wichet said.

Under this programme, customers can obtain loan guarantees to save costs. TCGC will guarantee an average 1.75 per cent a year for the first four years or a combined seven per cent for four years. This helps customers reduce their business costs, Wichet said.

This is apart of its guarantee loan target of Bt100 billion by the end of this year, up 16 per cent of its loan guarantee of Bt86 billion last year. TCGC will also maintain its non-performing loans, which totalled no more than 13.4 per cent early this year – a reduction from 13.48 per cent at the end of 2017, he said.

Wichet added that in the first two months of this year, TCGC had success in guaranteeing loans of Bt16 billion, or about 16 per cent of its total guarantee loan target for this year.

“At present, most commercial banks restrict their provision of loans to the customers, especially SMEs,” he said. “As a result, TCGC has invited SMEs to visit one of the 11 TCGC branches nationwide to see an adviser before applying for a loan from the commercial banks. This will help them to get a bigger loan from the banks, because TCGC will guarantee the loan for them.”

Most commercial banks have restrictions on providing loans for SMEs because non-performing loans from this sector are rising.

However, Wichet said, TCGC will help SMEs by suggesting how they can manage their businesses and draw up a business plan to get a bank loan. This will help them to get loan easier than if they apply for the loan by themselves, he said.

Qualcomm says former chairman exploring buyout effort

Corporate March 17, 2018 10:33

By Agence France-Presse
San Francisco

Qualcomm said Friday that Paul Jacbos, its chairman until a week ago, was considering a buyout effort for the California chipmaking giant just days after it fended off a hostile bid from Singapore rival Broadcom.

Jacobs, who had been chief executive at Qualcomm for nearly a decade and executive chairman until March 9, will not be renominated to its board at its annual meeting next Friday, the company said in a statement.

The board made a decision not to renominate Jacobs “following his notification to the board that he has decided to explore the possibility of making a proposal to acquire Qualcomm.”

As a result, the number of board members will be reduced from 11 to 10 as of the holding of the annual meeting.

The statement said that if Jacobs does make a bid, “the board will of course evaluate it consistent with its fiduciary duties to shareholders.”

The announcement comes after reports that Jacobs has sought to raise capital for a Qualcomm bid, and had approached Japanese tech giant SoftBank, which is in the midst of a major investment spree in the sector.

Jacobs is the son of Qualcomm co-founder Irwin Jacobs and was CEO at the San Diego firm from 2005 to 2014.

Last week, he was replaced as chairman by Jeffrey Henderson, who will be non-executive chairman at Qualcomm, the leading maker of chips for smartphones.

The news comes days after US President Donald Trump blocked a $117 billion hostile bid from Broadcom, citing national security reasons.

US officials had maintained that Broadcom would have curbed innovation at the US chip giant and opened the door to Chinese firms to dominate the process for 5G, or fifth-generation wireless networks.

Qualcomm’s market value is around $90 billion, and is seen as an important player in the 5G race, but it has been hampered by antitrust actions around the world and litigation with Apple over claims that the chipmaker abused its dominance in the sector.

Qualcomm is also in the process of trying to close a takeover of Dutch chip rival NXP.

The board statement said that Qualcomm is now “focused on executing its business plan and maximizing value for shareholders as an independent company.”

It added that Jacobs “has been a valued employee and director of Qualcomm since 1990” and that “he has been one of the great innovators in our industry.”

Lopburi couple charge up business ambitions with expansion of biomass fuel venture

A COUPLE from Lopburi province are scaling up their biomass energy venture after spending Bt30 million on a new production plant that they hope will this year triple the Bt10 million revenue achieved for last year.

Oratip Tiangyuttitom and her husband Wattanapong Thongsoi chose Earleaf acacia trees as their source stock for the biomass fuel, which they supply to manufacturing plants.

“We decided to resign from our jobs to build our business from our savings of Bt150,000 in 2011,” Oratip said in an interview with The Nation recently. “We began trading in agricultural products for supply to paper manufacturing plants and went on to generate sales at an average of Bt8 million a year.

“Then we saw there was strong demand for biomass energy products for supply to manufacturing plants. As a result, we looked into this and saw that a fast-growing tree like Earleaf acacia was the most suitable for processing into biomass energy products. And with that change, we increased our sales value to Bt10 million a year.”

Oratip said that she and her husband saw continued strong demand in the market for biomass energy products, giving them the confidence to commit to the Bt30 million investment last year for the development of the manufacturing plant to produce the biomass fuel from Earleaf acacia. The plant has a production capacity to produce, by chopper type, about 20 tonnes per hour, and up to 3 tonnes per hour by the rod-type option.

The company has signed contracts with 100 nearby farmers to supply the production plant with Earleaf acacia trees. This arrangement has resulted in increased incomes for the participating farmers at an average of Bt4,000 a month.

“The farmers still grow rice and other agricultural products, so by supplying to us they gain extra income, especially as the Earleaf acacia are fast-growing trees,” she said.

She said the manufacturing plant began operations early this year and was producing at up to 90 per cent of its production capacity each day.

The plant also supplies its products to three manufacturing plants that have ordered the biomass fuel products. These customers, at around 300 kilometres from the plant, are not that far away.

With the orders coming in from customers, Oratip said the company estimates its total revenue will reach Bt30 million this year, up from Bt10 million last year. The company also expects sales will jump to Bt50 million in 2019, thanks to strong demand in the market and the capability of the plant to scale up output to meet customers’ needs.

“We decided to go into business by ourselves as we believed we could achieve what we set out to do, after seeing there was demand in the market for biomass energy products from several manufacturing plants in nationwide,” Oratip said.

She said the company plans to increase its production capacity to meet the strong demand, after the production plant begins operating at full capacity sometime this year or the next. Such a move would result in an expansion of the company’s contract farming arrangements to bring in as many 1,000 farmers as suppliers.

Kasem Bundit’s Aviation institute to launch ‘One Stop Total Solutions’

Corporate March 17, 2018 01:00

By THE NATION

THE AVIATION Personnel Development Institute (APDI) of Kasem Bundit University is launching the first “One Stop Total Solutions” course in Thailand.

By commencing the pilot and maintenance technician courses to solve the pilot and aircraft technician shortage crisis, APDI aims to be one of the top three aviation academies in the country in order to benchmark into the AEC market.

Indicative support factors are the growth and lack of manpower in aviation industry. As an academic institute, APDI has strategically seized the opportunity to drive Thailand as the hub of the region.

Senee Suwandee, Vice President for Planning and Development of Kasem Bundit University said the aviation industry in Thailand and worldwide are growing rapidly, partly due to the tourism promotions in various countries. In addition, air transportation is also encourged through long-term national development poicies. As a result, the aviation industry is expanding tremendously; nevertheless the personnel involved in these careers, especially in Thailand, are insufficient.

“Air transportation is an industry that has been growing steadily and continuously. Thailand plays an important role in developing commercial aviation in Southeast Asia and the whole continent and Bangkok is considered one of the largest aviation centres in the world. With more than 90 million travellers per year, air traveling is a time-saving alternative which is not only more comfortable but also meets the safety requirements for both passengers and cargo transportation. This is the reason why the airline industry is growing rapidly. Thus the competition between premium and low cost airlines is inevitable,” said Senee.

The number of commercial flights in Thailand reported by the Department of Airports (2017) has risen sharply from 40,000 in 2010 to 140,000 flights in 2017. The aviation industry is dramatically growing and the number of commercial aircraft needs to be increased.

Boeing and Airbus companies have predicted the needs for a huge numbers of pilots and aircraft technicians. Airbus has projected that over the next 20 years; there will be a demand for more than 40,000 aircrafts. More than 530,000 pilots and 550,000 aircraft maintenance technicians will also be required. Boeing has predicted a worldwide demand of more than 40,000 aircrafts, 617,000 pilots, as well as 679,000 aircraft technicians. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand has said that personnel requirements including air traffic controllers and aircraft mechanics will rise to 40,000 in the Asian region.

The Thai government has pushed for airport expansion under the supervision of the Airport Authority of Thailand to accommodate upto 184 million per year. The expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport Phase 2 is anticipated to be completed by 2021. This will enhance passenger capacity of Suvarnabhumi Airport from 45 million to 60 million per year.

The expansion of U-Tapao International Airport has been approved. It will serve as the third commercial international airports of Thailand as well as the Eastern Special Economic Zone in support of the Eastern Economics Corridor (EEC) area, and link the passenger transportation to Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi Airport. In the meantime, worldwide airlines are also expanding their businesses and buy more aircrafts.

In conclusion, the development of the aviation industry has a major impact in terms of its economic and social roles. In other words, the economic growth and expansion of airline fleet are extended tremendously. This leads to the opportunities in the field of careers across all sectors for many Thais. Furthermore, the government has planned to enhance the growth of Thai aviation personnel in the future in order to cope with the increasing demand of the industry. The evidence indicated fierce competition in the industry. Qualified and efficient personnel are required to support the expansion of the plan.

Thus APDI is launching the first “One Stop Total Solutions” course in Thailand in order to respond to the personnel shortage. By launching the pilot and aircraft maintenance courses, the main purpose is to be one of the top three leading flight aviation academies to tap into the AEC market.

APDI provides three curriculum: Bachelor of Arts in Airline Business, Bachelor of Business Administration in Aviation Industry Management and Master of Arts in Aviation Management. These three programmes have provided the airline industry with well-trained and highly – qualified personnel as well as management executives.

ADPI is also preparing for the following programmes: Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (Areas of Specialisation: Aircraft Maintenance and Pilot in cooperation with Falcon Aviation School) and the aircraft Maintenance Repair and Overhaul centre to meet the needs.

APDI considered the crisis of pilot and aircraft technician shortage as a big opportunity for aviation academies. Thus it is positively confident that the courses under this forthcoming future.

MCOT HD targets young urban audiences via revamp of show line-up

Corporate March 17, 2018 01:00

By THE NATION

MCOT HD plans to revamp its programming in 2018 with new shows including “Black Coffee”, “Morning News Talk”, sitcoms and game shows to attract younger urban audiences.

At the same time, the company said it would continue to improve existing programmes to make them more appealing.

Key performance indicators will be used in evaluating programmes’ success. Any programme with high ratings will receive production subsidies, while those with low ratings will be eliminated.

Kematat Paladesh, president of MCOT Plc, said that MCOT HD (Channel 30) will start airing the new programs in the middle of March. The new lineup includes Morning News Talk (Chao Chuan Kui); “Black Coffee” (Ka Fei Dum Kum Nee) on weekdays, hosted by Suthichai Yoon and covering world events; a variety show called Hot Widows (Mai Tua Mae) hosted by Sawika Chaiyadech (Pinky), Yanee Jongwisut and Daraneenuch Pohpiti; musical game show “Shower Singer”; sports programme “Crossfit” (Baa Palung), documentary programme “The Amazing Show” (Plaek Tae Jing); a travel show for young people, “Banana Split”; drama series “The Person You Are Waiting for” (Kon Nee Tee Ror Koy) developed from the popular drama show “The Day You Are Waiting for” (Wan Nee Tee Ror Koy), sitcoms ,and Chinese series “The Destiny of White Snake”.

Also, the station aims to increase the viewership of its existing programmes such as Timeline (Khao Dang Kham Wela), which has already been broadcast on Netflix and Sure & Share on social media platforms.

“MCOT has a strong audience base especially those who are over 40 years with high purchasing power. Many advertisers have been successful in promoting their products on MCOT HD. This new programming is expected to target the younger audiences living in urban areas,” Kematat said.

Suthichai, a co-founder of Nation Multimedia Group, said: “MCOT was where I officially produced TV programmes. The channel gave me an opportunity to create many news shows, starting with news and situation analysis, Countdown to the Persian Wars, Roving Election, Nation News Talk and Cheepajorn Lok.

“I am thrilled to be back at MCOT in the “Black Coffee” show. I was writing the “Black Coffee” column in Bangkok Biz Newspaper quite so long. This time, “Black Coffee” will be aired on television and served as a bedtime companion for the viewers with more fun, creativity, information and experiences being added. The viewers can only find such unique programmes on 9 MCOT HD.”

Suthichai also voiced his opinion on the Central Administrative Court’s ruling on the case in which Thai TV Co Ltd filed a lawsuit against the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (the NBTC).

He said: “The regulator should not only govern or regulate but also provide support to the operators, as practised in other countries. The NBTC does not quite understand the situation. Therefore, it has a brought a crisis to the industry. It might be too late to provide remedies, since the crisis has already happened, not only in the business perspectives but also with the quality of content and producers.

“It has been only three years, but I have seen much deterioration. The structure of media companies has changed. To investors, profitability may be their priority instead of content quality. This concern has troubled me as a media producer.”
