Krungthai Bank will cease handling cryptocurrency transactions from the Thai Digital Asset Exchange (TDAX) following a request from the Bank of Thailand that the country’s banks halt such transactions, said chairman Somchai Sujjapongse, who is also finance permanent secretary.

Directions for the supervision of cryptocurrencies and initial coin offerings (ICOs) are expected to be finalised by the end of this month, particularly for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) concerning oversight of transactions involving digital currencies and for the Stock Exchange of Thailand in regard to ICOs.

Previously, TDAX said that Bangkok Bank had ceased handling cryptocurrency transactions in the bank’s account system. It said earlier that investor confidence in the platform had not been eroded, citing Krungthai’s then-provision of such transactions along with Kasikornbank and Siam Commercial Bank.

KBank in border staff swap with Myanmar lender

By   THE NATION

KASIKORNBANK (KBank) is joining with Myanmar’s biggest lender, Kanbawza Bank (KBZ Bank), on a staff exchange programme for the border cities of Mae Sot and Myawaddy.

The initiative is part of efforts to boost trade across the border.

The focus is on import-export settlements via banking system and promotion of cross-border funds transfer via the Mae Sot Border Trade Business Centre, which aims to reach Bt200 million in such transactions this year, Kbank’s first vice president for world business strategy and the marketing management department, Kittichart Potithat, said yesterday.

He said the bank had always placed importance on the Myanmar market, given the large volume of border trade with Thailand.

With the aim of helping investors and business operators in the border areas, KBank’s Border Trade Business Centre was set up in Mae Sot, Tak province. To date, the centre has granted credit of more than Bt150 million to businesses in Mae Sot for investment in Myanmar, completed 10 successful cases of business matching and organised seminars to share knowledge on trade and investment, in order to promote trade and financial transactions between the two countries.

Recently, KBank expanded its cooperation with KBZ Bank by sending KBank staff to work in Myawaddy branch of KBZ Bank. In turn, KBZ Bank staff will work at the Mae Sot branch of KBank for one year.

This cooperation should enable KBank to gain in-depth expertise about business operational format and banking regulations in Myanmar, as well as consumer insight in using financial services of Myanmar consumers, Kittichart said.

“Moreover, KBank staff under this staff exchange program can help advise Myanmar entrepreneurs on how to conduct financial transactions in Thailand, thus allowing both Thai and Myanmar entrepreneurs to conduct border trade transactions more smoothly,” he said.

“It has been found that Thai SMEs still need help to understand more about Myanmar’s banking system and reliable channels in seeking business partners in Myanmar, while Myanmar SMEs want to use financial products and services of Thai banks, but have been limited by communications barriers.

“Therefore, it is hoped that this cooperation will help enhance knowledge and understanding about financial and border trade transactions between the two countries. In 2018, KBank will offer financial facilities to support border trade as always, focusing on cross-border money transfer service.

“KBank will also place a greater emphasis on cross-border funds transfer to promote import-export settlements via regulated banking system because nearly 100 per cent of such transactions now are settled through non-regulated systems. KBank is targeting an increase in Thai cross-border funds transfer transactions to Myanmar via KBank’s Border Trade Business Centre in Mae Sot branch to about Bt200 million in 2018.

“In addition to cross-border trade, KBank has always placed emphasis on businesses in Myanmar. KBank and KBZ Bank have also jointly developed cross-border payment services, namely funds transfer in local currency and a Myanmar worker remittance service to enable Myanmar workers in Thailand holding KBZ Bank accounts to transfer money back to Myanmar more conveniently by simply scanning the barcode of their Myanmar remit card at KBank ATMs.”

Bangkok Airways aims high

Corporate February 27, 2018 01:00

By The Nation

BANGKOK Airways will receive two Airbus A319 aircraft and increase the number of its code-share partners under a plan to boost revenue growth by up to 10 per cent this year, the company’s president Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth said yesterday.

The carrier also aimed to increase passenger numbers by up as much as 7 per cent this year from last year, Puttipong said at a press conference.

He said that in 2017 the company’s total revenue was Bt28.49 billion, an increase of 6.5 per cent from the previous year. Net profit was reported at Bt846.4 million, with the profit attributable to the equity holders of the company coming to Bt787.9 million. Earnings per share were Bt0.38.

The number of passengers carried last year 5.994 million passengers, rising 5 per cent from the previous year. For 2018, alongside the revenue goal of 10 per cent growth and a 7 per cent in passenger numbers, the passenger load factor is expected to be 70 per cent.

On the outlook and direction, the company will focus on expanding its network to cover the most important destinations throughout Asia “in order to facilitate our passengers and our code-share partners”.

“The company will further utilise our strategic flying hubs, which are Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi), Samui, and Chiang Mai, by offering new non-stop services from these airports to some high potential destinations in Asia, such as Chiang Mai–Hanoi, which is scheduled to operate from March 25, and Phuket-Yangon, expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2018,” Puttipong said.

For Samui, the company plans to offer some new charter services to cities with high potential in China, such as Samui-Xian and Samui-Changsha. “In addition, increased frequency will be added to our popular domestic and international routes such as Bangkok-Phuket, which will be increased to 66 flights a week, Bangkok-Vientiane to 14 flights a week and Bangkok-Mandalay (Myanmar) to 11 flights a week,” Puttipong said.

“This year, the company plans to increase the number of our code-share partners. In 2017, we signed code-share agreements with four leading airlines: Xiamen Airlines, Thai Airways, Vietnam Airlines and Hong Kong Airlines.

“To date, Bangkok Airways is in partnership with 24 airlines around the world, including our latest partner, El Al Israel Airlines. In 2018, we expect to sign more agreements with another four to six carriers.”

As for aircraft delivery plans, the airline has a total of 38 aircraft in the fleet.

“The company expects to receive two Airbus A319 aircraft and is planning to adjust the ATR72 fleet by removing six of our ATR72-500 and replacing them with the brand-new aircraft ATR72-600s, which will continue the total number of 38 aircraft for 2018,” he added.

This year, the company also plans to invest more in airport-related businesses in order to enhance the company’s overall performance. The company plans to build a hangar at Sukhothai airport, which can accommodate aircraft maintenance up to C-Check levels.

The company also plans to expand its Bangkok Air Catering business by opening one more air catering house at the Chiang Mai International Airport, with operations expected to begin in 2018.

The company’s vice president for sales, Varong Israsena Na Ayudhya, said that this year, the company would concentrate on the CMLV countries – Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam – as these countries projected to achieve notable economic growth and high travel demand.

“Apart from these markets, we are eyeing the Chinese market, especially Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Chongqing. which are growing in terms of economic scale,” Varong said.

“Bangkok Airways currently operates daily non-stop flights between Samui-Hong Kong, Samui-Chengdu, Samui-Guangzhou and Samui-Chongqing and is planning to launch new charter services to Xian and Changsha in the near future.

“For domestic sales, we plan to tap into the corporate travel sector and government travel sector as we see higher travel demand in these two particular groups.

“We believe that our products are very well suited for these travellers. For Thai markets, we will roll out some special promotions throughout the year as well as attending some important domestic travel fairs including the Thai Tiew Thai Fair and the Samui Travel Fair to generate advance sales.”

SEC files criminal complaint against former IFEC head Wichai

Corporate February 26, 2018 18:50

By The Nation

The Securities and Exchange Commission has filed a criminal complaint against Wichai Thavornwattanayong, former chairman of Inter Far East Energy Corporation (IFEC), with the Economic Crime Suppression Division on the grounds of performing duties dishonestly when he failed to disclose IFEC’s default on its bills of exchange (B/E).

In addition, the SEC has instructed IFEC directors and the persons whom IFEC identified as directors via the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) to solve the listed company’s problems urgently and to disclose their individual clarifications to the public by March 5.

While he was IFEC chairman, Wichai failed to have the company clarify to the SET the issue of B/E default circulated in the news at the time, which has caused IFEC to be suspended from trading on the bourse since January 12.

This incident, however, worked for Wichai’s benefit because his IFEC shares of more than 57.46 million used as collateral for the company’s margin trading were not subject to force selling, the SEC said on Monday.

As a result, Wichai was able to remain an IFEC shareholder and exercise his voting right to select company directors at three shareholders’ meetings in 2017, it added.

Concurrently, the SEC is inspecting the case of IFEC’s investment money in a renewable-energy project, as raised by investors, and other complaints.

Any person’s act found to be liable to any offence under the Securities and Exchange Act shall be subject to legal proceedings in due course, the regulator said.

In any case, filing a criminal complaint against Wichai commences the criminal-justice administration process whereby the consideration of whether the defendant is guilty is under the inquiry officer’s investigation, the public attorney’s prosecution, and the court’s jurisdiction, respectively.

In addition, being named in the complaint has caused Wichai to have untrustworthy characteristics for being a director and executive of issuing and listed companies and he is therefore banned from holding such positions, the SEC explained.

The Shell Company of Thailand has announced a business direction that will strengthen its non-fuel retail businesses, along with the expansion and renovation of petrol stations across the country.

Attention will also be given to delivering the best service for Thai motorists, in line with Shell’s purpose in “Making Life’s Journey Better”.

This will help Shell stations become “Happiness Stations” for all Thai consumers, executive director of retail business Ornuthai Na Chiangmai said on Monday.

The company aims to achieve a 50:50 split between fuel and non-fuel components by 2025, she said.

Shell will expand the number of Deli Café branches by some 30 per year from the existing 55 outlets.

Shell SELECT, meanwhile, aims to be a shopping destination stocking a full range of products with an emphasis on ready-to-eat food, snacks and drinks, Ornuthai said.

The outlets come complete with a lounge where consumers can sit, relax and enjoy the company’s “Delightful Sensation” design concept.

CPF posts 8% revenue rise on back of overseas business growth

Charoen Pokphand Foods generated revenue of around Bt501.5 billion last year – up 8 per cent from the 2016 level – and a net profit of nearly Bt15.26 billion, thanks to growth in its overseas businesses, executive committee chairman Adirek Sripratak announced on Monday.

CPF intends to pay a dividend of 25 satang per share for last year’s operations, he said.

Sooksunt Jiumjaiswanglerg, chief executive officer – Agro Industrial Business and co-president of CPF, said most of the company’s business areas had grown well during 2017, with the results achieved coming in as planned.

However, the listed company had faced a challenge for its pig business in Asia, due to falling prices.

Prices of pork dropped below production cost, particularly in Vietnam, he said, although the situation was now gradually easing due to an upward price trend.

In addition, CPF strengthened its efficiencies both in management and operational terms, Sooksunt explained.

The company estimates that its financial results will increase by 5-8 per cent this year, the co-president said.

Minister Uttama Savanayana said that the ministry would work with the related local organisations, including the Federation of Thai Industries and the Centre of Robotic Excellence (CoRE), to implement the project, which has targeted to woo between 300 and 500 SMEs to participate.

The ministry will join with the related organisations to select the SMEs deemed ready to take part in the initiative, he added.

Uttama said that the initiative is targetting production cost reductions of 10 per cent in the first year for participating SMEs. The Small And Medium Enterprise Development Bank of Thailand will support the loan to the participating SMEs.

The loans would not exceed Bt15 million each with an interest rate of between 3 per cent and 4 per cent per year.

Russian firms ready for Thai opportunities

THE NATION

RUSSIAN companies are ramping up business partnership with their Thai counterparts.

The Russian business mission to Thailand from February 20-22 has paved the way for more trade and investment between the two countries, said Russian business leaders who spoke with The Nation about their business plan in Thailand.

Victor N Kladov, the Rostec group’s director for international cooperation and regional policy of Rostec group, said his high-tech firm comprises 16 holding companies and more than 600 enterprises. The group, a state corporation, produces many products including weapons systems, aviation clusters, helicopters, high precision rockets and missiles, combat tanks, and on-board electronics for aircraft, car and truck manufacturing. The company has supplied helicopters to the Thai Royal Air Force.

He said his company is looking into expanding business with Thailand. For example, it is considering setting up an aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul centre in the country, possibly in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). Asked about the possibility of direct investment here, he responded that Russian business leaders need first to analyse the business potential.

Evgeny Matveev, chief executive officer of Rite Ltd, a subsidiary of Rostec, said Russian information technology is outstanding in preventing cyberattacks or threats. Over the last 10 years, there has not been significant damage to IT systems, as the country’s powerful IT systems are designed to prevent such incidents. He said Rite had developed the best Russian IT solutions in the areas of security, transport, finance, energy, education and healthcare. Meanwhile, Pavel Frolov, owner of ROBBO Russia, said he has already found his business partner in Thailand. He sells sets of robotics and computer coding programmes for children. A set costs about Bt16,000. Kids find his computer programmes easy to write, because they do not require previous knowledge of computer code to do it. Kids learn while playing with the simple coding and robotics, he said.

Arnate Smerasuta, chief marketing officer of Ten Forward Co, a distributor of ROBBO Russia, said he had introduced the robotics and computer coding to schools outside Bangkok. Kids in provincial areas like it, yet the price is quite expensive compared to China-made products, he said. However, ROBBO robotics toy is safe for children and in line with European safety standards.

Pisit Serewiwattana, president of Export-Import Bank of Thailand (Exim Bank), said his bank has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Export-Import Bank of Russia to do business together. “It is a good opportunity for Thailand, as Russian authorities are now seriously interested in doing more trade and investment with Thailand,” Pisit said.

The two banks will first provide information for both sides. Thai exporters have had little knowledge about Russian business communities. Thai exporters also do not have much confidence in a letter of credit issued by Russian companies, so that lack of information is an obstacle for trade, Pisit said. Two-way trade has remained small so far, worth US$1.96 billion (Bt61.5 billion) in 2016.

The next step building co-operation between the two Exim banks would cover joint financing, or syndicate loans to finance joint-venture projects between Thai and Russian businesses, he said. Facing economic sanction from the western, Russia has turned to focus on Asia.

Sakon Waranyuwatana, Thailand’s vice minister for Commerce, revealed that a few joint venture projects were signed between Thai and Russian businesses during the Feb 20-22 Russian trade mission to the country.

He said Russians wants Thai investors for food processing, energy and other sectors.

Inthanin Coffee to expand in Cambodia

THE NATION
PHNOM PENH

CAMBODIA-BASED RCG Retail (Cambodia) Co Ltd has plans to open over 100 stores selling Thailand’s Inthanin brand of coffee in Cambodia from next month until the year 2022, after last week signing a memorandum of understanding with Thailand-based Bangchak Retail Co Ltd.

The first, and flagship, branch will open in Phnom Penh in March this year, followed quickly by a second flagship in Siem Reap in April, said RCG Retail (Cambodia) Co Ltd’s president, Jiranun Wongmongkol, in an interview with The Nation recently.

Then the company will open up to investors in Cambodia interested in opening an Inthanin coffee branch in the country. The cost of applying for the licence and opening a branch would be around $200,000 (Bt6.29 million) on average, she said. Around 20 staff will be employed by each location.

Bangchak Retail Co Ltd’s managing director, Viboon Wongsakul, said that Inthanin deal for Cambodia is part of its business plan to expand its business in CLMV countries – Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

“Cambodia has a strong demand to consume coffee and the purchasing power to spend an average $4 per cup,” Viboon said.

“This is a challenge for us to expand our franchise business of Inthanin Coffee in this country with targeted average sales of 300 cups a day for the first year of operation,” he said.

The company will supply coffee from Thailand, exporting it to franchisees in Cambodia, he added. Master franchisee RCG Retail will find local baked goods and other food to distribute through the Inthanin coffee outlets in Cambodia.

The companies want to support local products, he said.

Jiranun, RCG Retail’s president, said the company had already contracted with 20 Cambodian producers to distribute their products at Inthanin coffee branch nationwide.

“Our investment to open Inthanin coffee branches in Cambodia is expected to create new jobs for Cambodian people – over 2,000 jobs from the year 2018 until the year 2022 – and will also increase trade values between Thai and Cambodia,” Jiranun said.

Inthanin Coffee is the second Thai coffee firm to expand its franchise business into Cambodia, following Amazon Coffee, which is owned by |PTT Plc.
