BANGKOK Glass Plc is reshuffling its portfolio as the company gears up for further expansion in its alternative energy business, president Pavin Bhirombhakdi said.

The company will invest Bt7 billion this year in building up its four major businesses – glass containers, float glass, non-glass packaging, and alternative energy.

“We are embarking on significant changes to our structure and business expansion,” he said. “After more than 40 years of operations, these changes will help the company to adapt in order to reduce the business risks as well as help the company to move forward and be more comprehensive.”

Pavin said that in 2017 the company introduced new businesses, such as the business integration between float glass and building materials. In the future, the alternative energy business will be interconnected with the existing businesses like the non-glass packaging business.

He said that the overall picture for the business in 2018 would be one growth, supported the recovering economy.

“Our packaging business, especially, could grow remarkably due to the growth of food and beverage business which resulted in the increase in demand for packaging containers,” Pavin said. “Meanwhile, the growth in the float glass business will take a certain period of time.”

He said the company had recently opened its float glass factory on a 150-rai plot in Prachinburi province at a cost of Bt5 billion. The factory started operations in September last year.

“We are discussing with potential partners, both in Thailand and abroad, for investment possibilities in alternative energy projects. The negotiations with some foreign investors have been initiated,” said Pavin, adding that the company has already invested in the opening of two solar power rooftop facilities at its existing glass contain factories in Ayutthaya and Khon Kaen with combined capacity of 4.5 megawatts. The facilities, however, are expected to increase capacity to 10 megawatts by the end of this year.

“We expect the overall investment to reach approximately Bt7 billion this year, to be allocated to our four core businesses. We also expect our total revenue to increase by about 10 per cent this year, up from the between 4 per cent and 5 per cent growth posted in 2017,” said Pavin.

Bangkok Glass’ subsidiary BG Container Glass Co Ltd is preparing to file for a public securities offering by April to be listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand.

EXIM Thailand looks abroad for loan push

Corporate February 09, 2018 01:00

By   THE NATION

THE Export-Import Bank of Thailand (EXIM Thailand) is targeting growth of 9 per cent in outstanding loans to Bt100 billion this year, underpinned by support for Thai businesses expanding into neighbouring countries, the bank’s president Pisit Serewiwattana said yesterday.

Pisit said the bank the was particularly focused on moving forward with Thai entrepreneurs in the markets of the so-called CLMV countries: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.

“For 2018, the bank will carry on our proactive role in growing loans to further drive the Thai economy, and we will keep accelerating export credit and investment insurance as a tool for exporters to penetrate markets with more confidence through online and other new channels in partnership with the relevant public and private sectors with the aim of growing Thailand’s international business turnover,” he said in a press conference,” he said.

“EXIM Thailand is ready to lead Thai entrepreneurs in penetrating the CLMV countries for trade and investment and developing SME exporters and investors to enhance their competitiveness,” said Pisit, referring to small and medium-sized enterprises.

The bank has developed the EXIM Happy Credit programme to help create new SME exporters and assist those without collateral to start their export endeavours.

Under the scheme, the bank is offering a credit limit of Bt500,000 and interest rate of 4.5 per cent per account in the first year for each single-account juristic person in line with the government’s policy.

Pisit said that global trade has shifted towards new frontiers.

“In 2017, the new frontier economy represented more than 50 per cent of the global economy, compared with around 20 per cent in the past two decades,” he said.

“EXIM Thailand has thus targeted to expand loans to Thai entrepreneurs to facilitate their competition in new frontiers, particularly the CLMV, Thailand’s major markets with an average annual export growth of 13 per cent from Bt260 billion in 2007 to Bt850 billion in 2017.

“Amid investment-induced trade in the global economy today, active expansion is seen in investment beyond Thailand to build new production bases and tap new markets.

“Thai entrepreneurs have to adjust themselves to keep pace with the new global trend. EXIM Thailand has thus launched credit facilities for Thai entrepreneurs’ expansion of investment in the CLMV. Thai investment in this market had an average growth of outstanding investment of 30 per cent per year from Bt33 billion in 2007 to Bt470 billion in the third quarter of 2017.”

The EXIM Thailand president said the bank has since 2017 implemented its 10-year master plan, to 2027, as a response to the government’s Thailand 4.0 initiative, along with the 20-year National Strategies, the 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan (2017-2021) and State Owned Enterprise Plan in the category of financial institutions.

In 2017, EXIM Thailand posted a net profit of Bt1.36 billion. At the end of December, its outstanding loans accounted for Bt91.88 billion, an Bt8.71 billion growth from the end of 2016, with new loan drawdown of Bt27.33 billion during the year and partial repayment of existing loans. This contributed to a business turnover of Bt159.94 billion.

Pisit said EXIM Thailand assisted entrepreneurs – particularly those SMEs that have competitive potential in both international trade and investment – with SME business turnover of Bt99.61 billion. Outstanding loans to SMEs amounted to Bt37.14 billion, a Bt2.11 billion or 6.02 per cent year-on-year growth.

EXIM Thailand’s non-performing loans (NPL) ratio at the end of December stood at 3.57 per cent, the same as in the previous year, or Bt3.28 billion in total NPL amount. Its allowance for doubtful accounts was Bt7.94 billion, of which Bt3.49 billion was minimum provisioning requirement by the Bank of Thailand, or a provision to provisioning requirement ratio of 227.53 per cent. This enabled the bank to maintain a strong financial status, Pisit said.

“As for support of Thai entrepreneurs’ international trade and investment, at present, EXIM Thailand has a total accumulated loan approval amount of Bt67.16 billion for international projects, with outstanding loans accounting for Bt36.21 billion as of the end of 2017,” Pisit said.

“EXIM Thailand has remained steadfast in promoting trade and investment expansion to such new frontiers as the CLMV. In June 2017, it opened a representative office in Yangon, and has plans to open more in Laos and Cambodia.”

Thai Beverage slides in rating

Corporate February 09, 2018 01:00

By The Nation

Fitch Ratings (Thailand) Limited has downgraded Thai Beverage Plc’s (ThaiBev) long-term foreign-currency issuer default rating to ‘BBB-’ from ‘BBB’, and its national long-term rating to ‘AA(tha)’ from ‘AA+(tha)’.

The ratings have been removed from rating watch negative (RWN), and a stable outlook has been assigned.

ThaiBev’s ratings have been downgraded by one notch following the debt-funded acquisition of Vietnam’s Saigon Beer – Alcohol – Beverage Corporation (Sabeco) on December 27, 2017. Fitch expects ThaiBev’s leverage, defined as FFO adjusted net leverage, to increase to 5.7x by the end of the fiscal year to September 30, 2018, from 1.2x at fisal year 2017. However, leverage should decline to around 4x by FYE20, which will be in line with its ‘BBB-‘ rating.

The stable outlook reflects our expectation that ThaiBev will deleverage, which stems from its ability and willingness to maintain a conservative capital structure after its 2012 acquisition of Fraser and Neave, Limited (F&N). This willingness may be manifested, among other measures, in a lower dividend payout. The ratings also reflect Thaibev’s improved business risk profile from the expanded reach in Vietnam’s fast-growing beer sector, and the company’s leading position in Thailand’s spirits market.

Leica retailer Alist Private finishes fiscal 2017 with B300 million

Leica camera importer and retailer Alist Private has reported B300 million in earnings in fiscal 2017 and announced the opening of Leica Gallery Bangkok.

“We have been Leica-brand cameras’ official importer and retailer in Thailand for two full years, having reached the goal of B150 million in the first year and B300 million at the end of 2017, with 100-per-cent growth, a result of customer-relations strategy and direct user involvement creating brand loyalty and respect,” said managing director Danai Sorakraikitikul.

“Users today consist of the previously existing users, which we retain and value highly, together with new users we are trying to expand toward and educate with appropriate product usage along with any purchase.

“We have set in motion three major strategies – the Leica Academy with workshops for photographers from beginner to advanced level, user-engagement activities such as photo trips, and the Leica Gallery Bangkok, which will be the world’s 19th and Asia’s fourth location, an exhibition centre for foreign and Thai photographers.”

The first set of photographs to be exhibited is an honour from Nick Ut, a globally recognised photographer from Vietnam and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, who has brought over 25 photographs for the show “My Story by Nick Ut”, on view until April 30.

Danai said most amateur photographers are familiar only with the first steps in taking pictures – positioning, lighting and compositions.

Few bother with retouching, even with computer programs readily available, or printing to bring out different details.

“We aim to encourage all photography enthusiasts to move forward. This year, the goal is to retain the existing users while expanding on to new ones, with the expectation to reach B500 million in sales revenue and to be foremost in the minds of users of super-luxury cameras via activities and prices comparable to the international markets.”

ITD loses out on corporate governance funding amid scandal

The recent arrest of Italian-Thai Development (ITD) president Premchai Karnasuta for alleged poaching appears to be affecting potential investments in his firm, which is one of Thailand’s largest construction companies.

“It is confirmed that the corporate governance fund will not be invested in the shares of Italian-Thai Development,” said Worawan Tharapoom, president of the Federation of Thai Capital Market Organisations.

She added that the members of asset management companies would discuss the Premchai issue, which could be a case study on good governance.

Premchai is accused of poaching endangered animals in Thung Yai Wildlife Sanctuary after his arrest at the weekend.

However, Kesara Manchusee, president of the Stock Exchange of Thailand, said Premchai’s arrest could not be considered a fault under the Securities and Exchange Act, which stipulated that corruption findings against the chief executives of listed companies depended on Supreme Court verdicts.

“In the case of Premchai, we should look at the good governance and business ethics of Italian-Thai Development, which has already announced in its code of conduct for this year that the company would not doing anything that would negatively impact the country’s natural resources and environment,” Kesara said.

“The Thai Institute of Directors last year awarded four-star scores for good corporate governance to Italian-Thai Development.

“Such awards should be reviewed regarding the facts. If Premchai is actually found guilty, it is the responsibility of the company’s board of directors to consider the issue carefully and appropriately as they will be pressured and investigated by society,” she added.
