BIG C Supercenter, under the direction of its new board of directors, is expanding its retail network into the region, starting with neighbouring Laos and Cambodia.

It will also support the group’s manufacturing and trading businesses in the region and complete the supply chain.

Chairman of Executive Committee Asawin Techajareon-vikul told The Nation on Wednesday that the company was already in Vietnam, where MM Mega Market operates 19 cash-and-carry stores.

In Vietnam, Central Group, Thailand’s retail conglomerate, has joined with local partner Nguyen Kim Group to take over Big C Vietnam from France’s Casino Group for 920 million euros (Bt36.6 billion).

Central said the acquisition reflected its strong will to keep expanding in Asia.

Big C Vietnam has 43 stores nationwide – 33 hypermarkets and 10 convenience stores – plus 30 shopping malls. Total revenue reached 586 million euros last year.

In Thailand, Big C started the year with exciting developments as in late March, Berli Jucker Group acquired Casino Group’s holding in it, Asawin said.

After the closing of the mandatory tender offer for the remaining shares in mid-May, BJC Group’s holding in Big C increased to nearly 98 per cent.

This change will further strengthen Big C’s business platform as various potential synergies have already been identified for execution over the coming years, he said.

“Big C is a good investment and retail corporation, and being a significant channel allows us to be close to individual consumers. We are harmonising the work culture, personnel and operations at Big C to be in the same direction,” he said.

The board sees tremendous opportunities to expand Big C’s retail network in Thailand’s market via its diversified retail formats, ranging from hypermarkets to smaller stores such as Big C Market and Mini Big C, or even drugstores.

The company plans to open six Big C hypermarkets this year, together with 10 Big C Markets and 70 Mini Big Cs.

The company has already opened Big C hypermarkets in Ranong and Nong Khai’s Phon Phisai district in the first half of this year.

Three Big C Markets have also opened this year in Loei’s Wang Saphung district, Nakhon Ratchasima’s Pak Thong Chai district and Kalasin’s Somdet district.

Big C Supercenter operates about 125 large-format stores (Big C Supercenter, Extra and Jumbo), 55 Big C Markets, 397 Mini Big Cs (including 164 in Bangchak service stations and three franchised stores) and 147 Pure drugstores in the Kingdom.

Big C is ready to be a cogwheel in the government’s policy to make Thailand a shopping hub in the region.

“We will provide tourists valuable information as well as a good experience about Thailand,” Asawin said.

Big C Ratchadamri is a good example, he said: It welcomes many tourists from China and Vietnam.

Advertisers respond to multi-screen era

ADVERTISING

ALTHOUGH TV ratings are being accelerated by strong content, advertisers are increasingly turning to digital media, according to Mindshare Thailand.

In this multi-screen era, TV broadcasters should put more energy into content development and distribution, the provider of marketing and media services said yesterday.

Napaporn Jeatawattana, head of Mindshare’s trading arm The Exchange, said industry spending in the first half with a recommendation for TV stations should build up their audience bases as viewers move across platforms and advertising goes more and more digital.

“Since consumers have more platforms on which to consume media, brands have adjusted [their advertising] budgets in accordance with their behaviour.

“With overall advertising spending having also decreased, each channel must try to draw the attention of viewers by creating relevant, differentiated and impactful content,” he said.

Television viewership has increased to 2.41 hours per person because of the addition of digital TV channels, while the number of viewers has reached 33.6 million per day. Digital-TV penetration has more than tripled to 38 per cent from 12 per cent two years ago.

Besides sports content such as boxing, soccer, volleyball and badminton, prime-time dramas have become more fragmented because the leading new players have been trying to capture the audience’s attention from the duopoly – Channels 7 and 3 – by offering quality programmes.

The interest of consumers has spread from drama series to other categories such as news, sports and variety.

“With the current situation, it is vital to be adaptive and able to use information and data to analyse the changing behaviour of consumers,” said Phayao Thamteersoonthorn, another head of The Exchange.

“The use of data and tools to anticipate the best strategy in planning and buying can gain the best marketing results and help effectively and efficiently manage clients’ budgets.”

Advertisers need to use information and data to analyse the changes in consumer behaviour in order to increase the chances of reaching the consumer effectively in the era where the consumer is the selector, she said.

M FITNESS CO LTD, a Thai-owned operator of fitness centres, announced yesterday that it will invest at least Bt700 million to increase the number of gyms from three to 10 in the next five years.

Visuth Surachalermkul, managing director of M Fitness, said the estimated investment in each M Fitness branch will be between Bt9 million and Bt25 million. The company’s aim is to provide integrated health clubs in response to a boom in the well-being trend and with state-of-the-art facilities as well as design following the standalone concept, it is bound to attract the attention of health lovers.

“We focus on ‘tailor-made’ strategy, embracing trendy design, space, facilities, exercise class and reasonable prices to ensure the satisfaction of each targeted community. Occupying 1,200 square metres, the third and latest branch in Taksin is ready to offer a better health experience. The club targets to expand into 10 branches in five years and acquire 5,000 members,” he said.

The company spent over Bt25 million to launch what can be considered a very advanced and integrated health club covering 1,200 square metres in Taksin. The club features a sky running track in order to offer customers an experience that is very different from a simple treadmill.

The first M Fitness branch was opened in late 2015 in Mahachai, near Ekachai Hospital, for holistic health lovers, and thanks to the great response, it opened a second branch on Rama II Road early this year.

“According to a report from International Health Racquet and Sports Club Association in 2015, the proportion of Thais exercising at health club stands at just 0.6 per cent of the total population, which is very low compared to other Asian countries, which average at 8 per cent. But behavioural trend is constantly changing and Thais have started focusing more on health. This trend has resulted in a great expansion of the fitness club business in Thailand, which is worth Bt9 billion at the moment, and the expected growth is 10 per cent this year,” Visuth said.

“For our expansion plans, we prefer standalone locations, but not necessarily. It will depend on the situation and the scenario,” he added.

THAICOM

THE THAICOM 8 satellite has clinched its first customer, IPM Company, the country’s leading direct-to-home provider, which has awarded it a contract for transponder service.

“With Thaicom 8, we will able to utilise Thaicom’s leading video channel neighbourhood and broadcast platform at 78.5 degree east for the cost-effective expansion of our business including high definition TV in the not-so-distant future,” Manop Tokarnka, chief executive officer of IPM, said yesterday.

The contract is a major milestone for Thaicom 8, which was launched into orbit in May. Its satellite capacity will enable IPM to move its four million satellite dishes to the 78.5-degree east position ofThaicom 8.

The agreement is in line with Thaicom’s business plan of providing the satellite capacity needed to fuel the fast growth of the broadcast and media industries in Asia.

IPM is the country’s leading satellite dish provider on the Ku-band.

It is pleased to enter into the partnership with Thaicom through this deal.

“We believe Thaicom offers superior satellite performance and customer service over other operators, which is another reason why IPM decided to be on Thaicom 8.

“IPM has gone from strength to strength with local content channels as part of our strategy to strengthen the IPM satellite TV platform.

“Thaicom plays an important part in this strategy,” he said.

Paiboon Panuwattanawong, CEO of Thaicom, said the Thai TV market is one of the most dynamic and competitive in Asia.

“We are particularly proud of the fact that IPM moved from a global top three satellite operator to Thaicom, which is a testament to the trust in us and the tangible benefits that we bring to our customers,” he said.

Thaicom 8 represents a total solution for broadcast and data clients in Asia and Africa with excellent Ku-band coverage.

The satellite supports the high demand for capacity of the broadcasting industry as it transitions from standard definition to high definition and ultra-high definition.

Thaicom 8 carries 24 Ku-band transponders covering Thailand, South Asia and Africa.

Co-located with Thaicoms 5 and 6, Thaicom 8 entered service in July. It is designed to operate for more than 15 years.

Myanmar’s KBZ Bank inaugurates rep office in Bangkok

Nyo Myint, senior MD of KBZ Group, left, and Veerathai Santipraphob, Bank of Thailand governor, second left, at the KBZ grand opening ceremony of its rep office in Bangkok on Aug 3.

KANBAWZA BANK, part of the KBZ Group of Companies, wants to have a presence in all Asean countries in an effort to lure trade and investment to Myanmar, said Nyo Myint, senior managing director of KBZ Group. The bank held the grand opening of its representative office in Bangkok yesterday, making it the first Myanmar bank to establish an international presence.

After Thailand, the bank plans to open a rep office in Singapore next month. It is waiting for a licence to open a rep office in Malaysia.

It also plans to upgrade its representative offices to branches once they are mature enough to provide full banking service. This upgrade plan depends on the regulations of each country.

Nyo Myint said the rep office in Thailand was keen to build relationships with Thai banks.

KBZ received a licence from the Bank of Thailand this year to open the office.

It is the completion of KBZ Bank’s first step towards its goal of becoming Myanmar’s foremost commercial presence in the Southeast Asian region and beyond.

“We intend to start offering financial and advisory services as soon as possible to Myanmar individuals and businesses in Thailand and, naturally, Thai businesses interested in entering Myanmar,” said Than Cho, senior managing director of KBZ Bank.

“We hope they take advantage of our extensive knowledge of Myanmar’s financial markets and join the growing bilateral trade between our two countries.”

He believes that the new office in Thailand could play a key role in helping Myanmar support the entire Asean business community.

When Thai Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan met Myanmar President Htin Kyaw in Nay Pyi Taw last month, it was announced that the two countries intended to double their trade to US$20 billion (Bt700 billion) next year.

Through its representative office, KBZ Bank will help reach that target, Than Cho said.

“The long-standing relationship between the two countries offers ample opportunities to collaborate across various sectors in the region.

“We have long been a leading financial institution in Myanmar, and are prepared to represent the country alongside our international industry peers,” he said.

KBZ Bank is able to explore opportunities to build relations with, and eventually cater to, the large population of Myanmar nationals in the Kingdom – estimated to be about 3 million people – when they return to their home country.

To launch the office, KBZ Bank had to undergo stringent due diligence and demonstrate significant transparency as part of the licence application.

This included an appraisal of the bank’s position in the market, background information on its shareholders, the awards the bank has received and its accounts and investments to ensure its operations adhered to the guidelines set by the Bank of Thailand.

KBZ Group says it has a proven track record of operating with industry best practices, as evidenced in 2014 when the Myanmar Centre for Responsible Business recognised the KBZ Group of Companies as the most transparent organisation in Myanmar.

BCPG poised for major ‘green’ power expansion

ศาสตร์เกษตรดินปุ๋ย : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/BCPG-poised-for-major-green-power-expansion-30292088.html

BCPG, a green-power subsidiary of Bangchak Petroleum, has set a target of achieving 1,000 megawatts of installed capacity by 2020, as part of its business expansion after going public. “The renewable power we have developed is now running at a combined capacity of 400MW … This will be the challenge for us,” BCPG president Bundit Sapiachai said.

At a press conference held by the company yesterday, BCPG announced that the proceeds from its upcoming fund-raising via 590 million initial-public-offering (IPO) shares would partly be used as working capital for business expansion, as it aimed to diversify into biomass power business.

The remainder will be used for debt repayment.

Emerging as a solar-power unit of Bangchak Petroleum in 2011, BCPG was spun off and incorporated in July last year with an initial 38MW under operation.

The company has taken over the solar-power business and assets of its parent, while developing further by purchasing solar business in Japan.

Currently, BCPG operates renewable-power business with a contracted capacity of 418MW in total, Bundit said, adding that about 194MW is the aggregate contracted capacity of solar power in Japan, and 130MW in Thailand.

Of the 194MW capacity in Japan, about 20MW has commenced commercial operation, while about 118MW of the 130MW capacity in the Kingdom – at eight locations in five provinces – is also being operated commercially.

Another 12MW comprises Thai projects in the development phase for solar cooperatives, he explained.

“Our vision is to become a pure power player over the next three to five years … We aim to be a developer of renewable-power business,” the company’s president said.

BCPG’s vision is to become an international producer and supplier of renewable power by partnering with local and international firms, he added.

He said the solar power business in Japan was “interesting”, as it gave a rate of return on investment, with earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) coming in at about Bt8 million to Bt10 million per megawatt.

Meanwhile, the company’s solar-power plants’ EBITDA in Thailand is Bt15 million to Bt16 million per megawatt, as a result of its projects being the first to be awarded the highest adder tariff of Bt8 per unit.

Varah Sucharitakul, executive director of Finansa Securities – BCPG’s financial adviser and co-lead underwriter for its IPO – said BCPG would offer 590 million IPO shares, or up to 30 per cent of its paid-up capital.

Up 68.85 million, or 11.69 per cent, of the IPO shares will be offered to BCPG’s existing shareholders as a pre-emptive right, and the remainder to the public.

“Those who own BCP [Bangchak Petroleum] shares before August 16 will have the pre-emptive right to subscribe to BCPG IPO shares,” he said.

Varah said that after the fund-raising, BCPG would have room for debt-gearing as large as Bt50 billion-Bt60 billion.

Ecovacs Robotics aims to clean up in Thai market

TO CASH in on the growing trend of urbanisation and the use of robotics technology, not only in the manufacturing and service industries but also in household work, China-based Ecovacs Robotics is eyeing a significant expansion of its business into Thailand and other potential Asean markets.

The company – one of the world’s top three home-robotics manufacturers – has appointed Mentagram as the sole importer and distributor of its home products in the Kingdom, with a strategic plan to launch a strong line-up of several in-home robotic cleaners on to the market in the near future.

Among these offerings, Ecovacs Robotics’ Deebot floor-cleaning robot features self-emptying rubbish bins, mopping systems and the company’s Smart Move technology.

Meanwhile, the company’s Winbot, an award-winning window-cleaning robot, is equipped with patented Smart Drive technology, advanced cleaning systems and safety mechanisms.

“In Southeast Asia, Thailand for instance is an advanced market, besides Singapore. Thailand is one of the biggest markets and most advanced countries in Asean, and has a strong case to be the centre of robotics technology in this region, with its great manpower and knowledge,” said David Qian, president of the international business unit of Ecovacs Robotics.

Thailand could become the top country providing all the business potential for leading robotics brands from around the world, he suggested.

“Thailand’s infrastructure is very strong, so it will not be so hard for the country to become the centre for upcoming businesses, including [those making] robotic cleaning systems, with the support from global companies such as Ecovacs.

“I believe Thailand is now ready for this. In terms of the government sector, its Industry Ministry visited Ecovacs in April, and this shows that the government is ready to support us in the future,” Qian said.

Robotics technology in this field is now more mature, and will be among the top three most popular industries in the not-too-distant future, he added.

“We at Ecovacs have combined robotics technology with a mobile-phone application and our vacuum-cleaner products. This will make it much easier to operate the cleaners, while they can be controlled not only from home, but also from anywhere around the world,” the president said.

Nattapon Pattamapong, managing director of Mentagram, said Ecovacs Robotics’ household robotics products provided home-cleaning solutions that suited the lifestyle of Thai consumers living either in a house or a condominium.

“Our target customers are the new generation with an urban lifestyle, modern housewives and general consumers, respectively,” he said.

“In addition to robotic home cleaners, the company plans to launch other products into the Thai market, including an automatic home-controlling system. We can safely say that in the next five years, robotics could account for between 60 and 70 per cent of household work when it comes to cleaning the home,” Nattapon added.

Payong is lone applicant for post of president at KTB

PAYONG SRIVANICH, Krungthai Bank senior executive vice president and head of Global Capital Markets Group, is the only applicant to be KTB’s new president, according to Finance Ministry permanent secretary Somchai Sujjapongse.

Payong has extensive experience in capital markets, before joining KTB to head the Global Capital Markets Group in January 2015, he was managing director and head of Global Markets & Country Treasurer at Citibank Thailand.

Global Capital Markets Group was set up as a new business division by Vorapak Tanyawong, who will step down as KTB president on November 8, to expand its non-interest income and increase its market share of private clients.

Somchai, who is also chairman of KTB’s board of directors, said that although only one candidate applied for the position, the nomination and remuneration committee is going ahead with the selection process.

Even though only one candidate has come forward, the selection process is proceeding because if the applicant is deemed unsuitable, we will have to continue the search, he said. A KTB executive, who declined to be named, said that even though Payong is 47 years old, he has made great efforts to make |KTB’s Global Capital Markets Group known to major corporations.

“Vorapak is KTB president at 48, so age is not important and even though Payong’s experience is mainly in capital markets, the bank’s management has expertise in many sectors so we have |executives who are able to help support top management,” he said.

Tisco to enter digital banking arena next year

ศาสตร์เกษตรดินปุ๋ย : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/Tisco-to-enter-digital-banking-arena-next-year-30292074.html

TISCO Financial Group will roll out its first digital-banking operations early next year in a move that is expected to help the group expand its customer base, as well as lower operating costs in the long run. Group chief Oranuch Apisaksirikul said yesterday that the bank had completed changes to its core banking to accommodate the move to digital banking.

Although Tisco is currently the only listed bank not to have any digital-banking operations, Oranuch said it had had a policy to enter the digital arena for a number of years, while it should be noted that it had fewer branches than its peers in the sector.

“Our digital banking will be developed on cloud computing. Our back office has been revamped for the upcoming digital banking,” she said.

Tisco’s mobile banking will be launched early next year, with the bank then gradually developing additional features as its mobile banking will eventually be a channel for lending applications, apart from servicing transactional banking, she explained.

She added that the bank hoped that digital banking would help lower its operating expenses in the long run, and that mobile banking would enable it to expand the customer base to mass-market clients.

For Tisco’s deposit and investment products, middle-to-upper-market customers form its key client base, while its retail lending customers are in the auto-loan segment.

Tisco, which is the third-largest auto lender in the banking industry with a portfolio of Bt180 billion, expects its outstanding auto loans to show flat growth next year, after a further fall this year due to repaid loans remaining higher than new lending, the group chief said.

The level of new auto loans will return to normal in 2017 and 2018 after buyers under the previous elected government’s first-car tax-break scheme begin to trade their vehicles in after owning them for five years, she added.

That programme was launched in 2012. Meanwhile, Tisco has embraced fee income from selling insurance and mutual funds to sustain profitability, while its fee income from investment banking this year should outperform the market because Tisco Securities – the securities arm of Tisco Financial Group – has many initial-public-offering deals over the course of the year.

Tisco Asset Management, together with the Thaipat Institute, yester?day held an exclusive talk titled “Sustainable Investment: ESG Fund for Society”, in order to promote its ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) Fund widely among indi?vidual investors.

Theeranat Rujimethapas, managing director of Tisco Asset Management, said the company believed the return on investment in listed sustainable-business companies was no lower than for general listed companies.

Based on the total return of the Stock Exchange of Thailand over five years – from June 30, 2010, to July 10, 2015 – the return was 123 per cent, while the return on investment of com?panies in the “universe” of the ESG100 index was 160 per cent, he said. Stocks in the ESG100 were less volatile than the overall market, he added.

Tisco Asset Management has introduced the TISCO ESG Investment Fund for Society (TISESG-S) to indi?vidual Thai investors, with the fund set to invest in listed companies that are outstanding performers in the ESG100.

InTouch eyes fintech,says new CEO

OUTLOOK

INTOUCH HOLDINGS is exploring new business opportunities, including in the financial-technology arena, the group’s new chief executive officer Philip Tan said yesterday.

He added that this could be achieved either through mergers and acquisitions or joint ventures.

When asked how many companies InTouch is in talks with on possible deals, he said the company was exploring “four opportunities”.

“The work is in progress,” he said.

He added that the likely scenario for achieving a deal was through creating a joint venture.

He said that as the new CEO, he was hopeful of wrapping up a deal before the end of this year. However, there is a lot of work to be done and in reality, sometimes in the talks for possible deals, things don’t go as planned.

Tan, 50, born in Malaysia but fluent in Thai, became InTouch president last November 1 and assumed the CEO position on March 31 this year.

The quest for new business in fintech is related to his expertise in finance and banking on payment services. Before coming to InTouch, he was head of retail and consumer banking at Bank of Ayudhya.

He said Thailand had made lot of progress in drafting crucial regulations and strategies for the establishment of a sound e-payment ecosystem.

InTouch’s flagship companies are Advanced Info Service and Thaicom.

Tan said AIS was a well-run company and was in a new investment cycle to create new growth after its recent acquisition of licences on the 1,800- and 900-megahertz spectra.

He said InTouch was a holding company investing in good companies that could give good value to shareholders and offer good solutions to customers. It is a professional and politically neutral company.
