EXPANSION

SAHA GROUP, a diversified consumer-products company, will today ink its third joint-venture agreement this week.

Yesterday the group’s Thai President Foods (TF), a manufacturer of instant noodles and biscuits, signed a joint-venture deal with Japan’s leading ramen-chain operator Kourakuen Holdings Corporation to form President Kourakuen Co Ltd.

Under the new entity, more Kourakuen ramen restaurant branches will be launched in Thailand.

TF owns 70 per cent in the joint venture, while the Japanese partner holds 14 per cent. The rest is owned by individuals. The move is in line with the TF board giving approval on June 15 to enter into the transaction.

The joint venture, which will be registered today, will start operations in early September. The joint venture has registered capital of Bt25 million.

Kourakuen (Thailand) has been in the Kingdom for a few years and has six restaurants. The joint venture will keep open two profitable branches, one in Bangkok and one in Sri Racha, Chon Buri province, while the rest will be closed.

According to TF chief business development officer Petch Paniangvait, the joint venture plans to operate over 30 Kourakuen restaurant branches nationwide within five years that are expected to generate Bt540 million in total revenue per year. However, no branch will open this year.

TF has also acquired a ramen noodle-production factory from Kourakuen, which the former will use to provide ramen under the joint venture. The new entity will focus on restaurant-chain management.

Kourakuen Holdings president Tsutae Niida said that the company was keen to use Thailand as a springboard into the other Asean countries.

TF chief executive officer Pipat Paniangvait said that TF had forecast revenue growth of 5 per cent for TF this year.

Saha Group also yesterday signed a deal with Japan fashion-apparel company World Co Ltd to set up a joint venture, World Saha Fashion Co Ltd, with the former owning 51 per cent, to develop and distribute the World’s Takeo Kikuchi men’s products in Thailand.

Today Saha Group will ink a joint-venture deal with Mayflower Group of Malaysia to offer diverse and comprehensive tour services for tourists coming to Thailand. The joint venture with World has registered capital of Bt50 million and is expected to get off the ground late this year.

Its establishment marks World’s first entry into the Thai market, which is the regional hub of the rapidly growing fashion market in Asean.

The first store under the joint venture is expected to be launched early next year and World is discussing with Saha Group the possible location of that, said World Group CEO Kenji Kamiyama.

MEDIA

MASTER Ad has earmarked about Bt500 million to expand its out-of-home advertising-media coverage, largely upcountry, both organically and through mergers or acquisitions of local companies, aiming to grow by 15 per cent to revenue of Bt1 billion this year.

“We are negotiating with many local out-of-home-media operators in the provinces. The company aims to seal about three or four deals this year,” Suparanan Tanviruch, chief executive officer of Master Ad, said yesterday.

She said there was room to grow the nationwide out-of-home-media business because 70 per cent of the population resides outside Greater Bangkok, yet the capital and vicinity have absorbed about 70 per cent of out-of-home advertising expenditure.

Currently, Master Ad manages 1,347 out-of-home media units, comprising 660 billboards, 556 street-bench displays and 131 transit ad displays.

“Through the investment of Bt500 million in the second half of this year, we expect to double the number of units to more than 2,000, mainly in the provinces,” Suparanan said.

Master Ad believes it needs a larger out-of-home network to drive demand from its existing and future clients. The company targets a 40-per-cent share of the out-of-home advertising market within three years.

Apart from investing in new properties and M&As, the company is putting more focus on strengthening its sales teams, business and product development and technology to increase its competitiveness.

It targets revenue this year of at least Bt1 billion, up from last year’s Bt700 million.

Suparanan said VGI Global Media’s acquisition of a 37.42-per-cent stake in her company would result in benefits from media integration between the two parties.

CP sees future in high-tech industry

CHAROEN Pokphand Group is eyeing high-technology businesses such as pharmaceuticals and biotech food, but especially high-speed rail, specifically the Bangkok-Rayong route.

“We are really interested in this project. CP Group should finalise the decision over the next few months,” said chairman and chief executive officer Dhanin Chearavanont.CP Group was invited by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to build it, since there were no financial conditions.

Dhanin said the group would shift its investment to the “digital economy” to cash in on the global trend.

High-tech businesses such as high-speed rail are being pushed by the government, he said. Biotechnology, medical equipment, and food and medicine for the elderly are targets.

The success of a high-speed rail system requires the building of towns or high-tech communities, he said. If urban areas such as Pattaya, Rayong and a proposed township in Chachoengsao are developed, commuters could easily travel to work in Bangkok within one hour.

“If new towns are developed, new high-tech industries like good hospitals, good universities and high-profile people will move into the areas,” Dhanin said.

The government has also reportedly invited Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, another tycoon, to build another high-speed-rail spoke, from Bangkok to Hua Hin.

CP Group has started working with Harvard University to develop biotech products, with DuPont to develop high-tech food, with Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop robots, and with the Science and Technology Ministry to develop biotechnology in the local market.

The efforts are aimed at developing quality food and health products, and supply them to three consumer groups – general people, the elderly and patients.

The group plans to produce its own medicine especially for the elderly in the home market. It has been producing medicine in China for years and achieved a large market share.

The service industry and high-tech products will become very important in the future, so manufacturers will have to produce and supply higher-technology products, Dhanin said. The digital economy then will employ quality local staff and import labour for some jobs.

The global economy is facing uncertainty but it is a good time for the country to turn this crisis into opportunity by shifting up to high-tech industry, he said. Huawei has said it will set up a research and development centre in Bangkok to help get Thai small and medium-sized enterprises into such industries.

Tsinghau Tsinghua University has said it will help develop high-tech industry and management here.

Thailand needs to keep big investors, particularly from Japan, producing in Thailand, Dhanin said.

“With the best strategic location, close to China, Thailand only needs to improve infrastructure and the stability of policies for long-term growth.

“However, we still and always consider Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines as our competitors,” he added.

ADVANCED Info Service is hopeful that it will be able to wrap up its partnership deal with TOT soon to provide third-generation cellular service jointly on the state agency’s 2.1-gigahertz band.

AIS chief executive officer Somchai Lertsutiwong said his company was also seeking a partnership on providing the service on TOT’s 2.3GHz band.

Currently AIS holds a total of 40 megahertz of bandwidth on the 2.1GHz, 1,800MHz and 900MHz spectra, while TOT has 15MHz on 2.1GHz and 60MHz on 2.3GHz.

TOT has selected AIS as its strategic partner on its 2.1GHz band but has still not signed the official contracts.

TOT president Monchai Noosong said recently that the agency would start to announce its partnership plans with private telecom operators and supplier of telecommunications-transmission equipment on its 2.3GHz spectrum this month.

Yesterday AIS subsidiary Advanced Wireless Network picked up the 15-year 900MHz licence it won at an auction held in May by the National Broadcasting and Telecom-munications Commission. Jas Mobile Broadband had won that band at a previous auction last December but failed to fulfil the initial payment conditions, so the NBTC had to hold another bid.

TO CASH in on the rise of mobile booking for travel, US-based Expedia Inc is offering a new service for its partner hotels to help manage customer relationships and boost sales via that medium. “Of total travellers, 85 per cent have read reviews before making a purchase.

Therefore, we hope to help our partner hotels to enhance customers’ experience through real-time feedback,” Benoit Jolin, vice president for global products, said yesterday.

The company expects to complete the service roll-out to its partner hotels worldwide, including Thailand, in a few months.

“We have received over 5.6 million feedback responses since the trial launch.

More importantly, properties that respond to real-time feedback see up to 10-per-cent-higher post-stay review scores,” he said.

Pimpawee Nopakitgumjorn, director for marketing of Expedia Lodging Partner Services Thailand, said that besides the mobile platform, this new tool would also run on desktops and other platforms.

“The mobile platform is playing a key role in today’s travel business.

In Thailand, 45 per cent of consumer traffic searching for rooms and travel-related services at Expedia sites comes from mobile devices, while 22 per cent make a room reservation via their mobile phone,” he said. The company spent more than US$830 million (Bt29.3 billion) on technology development last year, particularly on the mobile platform, to respond to the increasing demand from small and medium-sized hotel operators.

Last year, Expedia generated $6.67 billion in revenue from its online travel services, which were involved with numerous travel brands comprising more than 200 booking sites attracting more than 450 million unique visitors on a monthly basis, across 35 languages in 75 countries.

The company also spent more than Bt119 billion on advertising its brands and products globally, both online and offline, including on TV and on transit and outdoor media.

Energy Minister Anantaporn Kanjanarat checks out exhibits at the Fast Auto Show, which kicked off yesterday at Bitec. Auto companies hope that the show will help stimulate sales during the low season.

AUTO COMPANIES are hoping that the “Fast Auto Show” will help drive up sales during the off season by enticing prospective buyers with attractive promotions.

“The situation of the auto market is expected to improve this year and we are expecting buyers from the eastern Bangkok-Samut Prakan area to come. This is a good opportunity for those who want to purchase a new or previously owned vehicle,” Pattanadesh Asasappakij, organising chairman, said yesterday at the opening of the show.

The event rolls on until Sunday at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Bitec).

Pattanadesh said 3,000 bookings were expected for 2,000 new cars and 1,000 used vehicles.

The 13 auto companies joining the show are Honda, Hyundai, Isuzu, Mazda, MG, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Suzuki, Toyota, Porsche, Thai Rung, MG Used Cars and Subaru.

Chalatchai Paphatphong, vice chairman for new cars, said there were loads of sales promotions.

“Not only can visitors enter the show free of charge, those who book or buy a car at the show will receive a chance to win a Suzuki Celerio worth Bt366,000.

“There are also other lucky draws for visitors with gold necklaces and other prizes,” he said.

A total of 16 used-car dealers are participating, and all used cars are inspected by Pattanadesh prior to going on sale to ensure high quality.

“A money-back guarantee is offered if it can be proved that the used car that is purchased has gone through a heavy accident,” said Asadavut Asasappakij, vice chairman for used cars.

“The used-car dealers are also competing against one another in offering special promotions, which include low down payments, long-term instalment plans with low interest rates, and other special offers,” he said.

TOT will invest about Bt3 billion to lay viaducts in Greater Bangkok that telecommunications operators can lease for their lines and cables.

TOT president Montchai Noosong said yesterday that the state enterprise was preparing a public fund to finance the construction of the viaducts for its own use and for lease to telecom operators, which will be required to bury their lines, including fibre-optic cables, in Bangkok.

The government has announced a policy to move all overhead electricity and telecom lines in major cities to below ground.

TOT plans to list the fund on the stock exchange and hopes to raise about Bt10 billion from it this year.

It estimates annual rental income of Bt1 billion from the viaducts.

TOT already has 25,000 kilometres of underground telecom tubes nationwide, of which about 20,000km are in Bangkok.

Last September the Cabinet approved a budget of Bt48.72 billion for the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) to replace 127.3km of aerial power lines in the metropolitan area with underground lines from 2016-25 in a bid to improve the cityscape.

Krisada Boonrat, chairman of the MEA and permanent secretary of the Interior Ministry, said the MEA would shorten the 10-year plan to five years.

The MEA, National Police, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, TOT and National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission yesterday signed the agreement to cooperate in the project.

Korkij Danchaivichit, deputy secretary-general of the NBTC, said regulations were being drafted for leasing viaducts.

ELECTRICITY

Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding has acquired an additional 50 per cent stake in Mount Emerald Wind Farm in Australia at the value of 10 million Australian dollar or approximately Bt260 million.

The transaction involves RATCH-Australia Corp (RAC), a subsidiary owned 80 per cent by RATCH, and Port Bajool.

Mount Emerald Wind Farm is developing a 180-megawatt Mount Emerald wind farm. The project was approved by relevant authorities in November 2015. A 13-year power purchase agreement (PPA) was struck with Ergon Energy –the state-owned enterprise of Queensland who will purchase electricity and Green Energy Certificates produced by the project until 2030.

The project increases RAC’s capacity to 654MW and RATCH’s capacity to 6,957MW.

“The transaction does not only strengthen RAC’s financial position, but also extends our renewable business where Australia is our main investment destination. To date, RATCH’s equity renewable capacity in Australia reaches 198MW from RAC’s four wind farms. In addition, RAC has other two renewable projects in development pipeline, including a wind farm and a solar farm, with combined capacity of 232MW,” said Rum Herabat, chief executive officer of RATCH.

Mount Emerald wind farm requires 380 million Australian dollar in investment or about Bt9.5 billion. The project involves the installation of 53 wind turbines, with 3.45MW each. The wind farm is expected to be completed and commercially operated in 2018.

Two firms collaborate on programmatic ad-media buying

MEDIA

IPG MEDIABRANDS has joined forces with VGI Global Media, one of the country’s largest out-of-home media agencies, to launch a programmatic buying service to improve utilisation of digital advertising screens.

Programmatic buying is the use of technology to automate the purchase of advertising or ad media in real time.

Wannee Rattanaphon, chairwoman of IPG Mediabrands, said yesterday that the new service aimed to attract new advertisers as well as to stimulate demand from existing clients to use available inventory amid the sluggish economy.

The service will work effectively if her agency gets enough advertising inventory from local providers of out-of-home media service such as VGI Global Media, she said.

Currently, VGI Global Media manages about 500 outdoor digital screens, 135 digital screens in office buildings in Bangkok, and a number of clock towers in the provinces.

“IPG will initially implement the system with VGI Global Media next month before extending it to other major vendors,” Wannee said.

Manee Eabe, managing director of IPG Mediabrands’ Magna Global service, explained that programmatic buying would integrate all relevant data and details of all outdoor media in the existing inventory. For example, the types of media available in the market, target groups, the number of target groups available during a specific time period, and the positioning of each medium outside the home would be categorised automatically.

Manee said that with this new technology, advertisers would be able to conduct real-time bidding.

“We believe that real-time bidding will play a key role in the near future in media buying. By 2019, advertising investment via this new method will surge by 70 per cent compared with this year,” she predicted.

Marut Atthakaivalvate, chief executive officer of VGI Global Media, said this new method could have an impact on clients and brands, which would be able to target customers according to location and period of time.

AWN tells 6m roaming users they’ll be unaffected by AIS 2G switch-off

ADVANCED Wireless Network (AWN), a subsidiary of Advanced Info Service, yesterday reassured around 6 million of its subscribers who had been roaming with AIS’s 2G-900MHz network that they would not be affected by the switch-off of the AIS 2G service at midnight tomorrow.

Somchai Lertsutiwong, AIS’s chief executive officer, said that while there were around 300,000 AIS subscribers to second-generation cellular service on the 900-megahertz network who would be disconnected, they were all inactive users.

Meanwhile, the roughly 6 million AWN subscribers using 2G phones will be able to continue using the 2G service, he stressed.

AIS is in talks with TOT to seek ways to enable these subscribers to continue using the 2G-900MHz network, he said, adding that the discussions are expected to be wrapped up before the end of tomorrow.

AIS had been using the 900MHz spectrum under a TOT concession, which expired last September.

AWN won a 900MHz licence in an auction held late last year. Once the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission awards the 900MHz licence to AWN, AIS is obligated to shut down its 2G service under the concession and transfer the 2G network to TOT under the build-transfer-operate system.

At the end of the first quarter, AIS group reported that it had 38.9 million subscriptions, of which 6 million were using 2G service, with the remainder on the 3G and 4G networks of AWN.

Somchai said yesterday that AIS would announce its new projections for revenue growth and dividend policy in August, while its investment budget for this year remained unchanged at Bt40 billion.

AWN yesterday paid the first instalment of its 900MHz licence upfront fee to the NBTC, transferring Bt8.602 billion – including value-added tax – via a Bangkok Bank cashier’s cheque, and placed 12 bank-guarantee notes worth Bt72.346 billion, including VAT, from Bangkok Bank, Kasikornbank, Thanachart Bank and CIMB Thai Bank, for the remaining instalments.

The NBTC’s 15-year licence to AWN will be good from July 1, 2015, through June 30, 2030.

Somchai said the 900MHz spectrum would boost AIS’s network capacity to 50 million users, which would help the group to further increase its services and quality.

AWN plans to split its 10MHz of the 900MHz band into two parts, one for 2G service and the other for either 3G or 4G, he added.

AWN currently offers service on the 2.1-gigahertz and 1,800MHz bands.
