Siam Wellness Group Plc’s chief executive officer and president Wiboon Utsahajit, Wang Ruoming, director of Kunming Tailai Spa Management Co Ltd, and Siam Wellness Group Plc’s managing director Prasert Jiravansitit join celebrate grand opening ‘Let’s Rela

SIAM WELLNESS GROUP Plc, owner and operator of the day-spa brands Let’s Relax, Rarin Jinda and Baan Suan, aims to plant its flag in at least 15 countries in Asia by 2020 after opening its first overseas franchisee in Kunming, China on Saturday.

President and chief executive officer Wiboon Utsahajit said the next potential market was Luang Prabang, Laos. A spa could open there this year.

The company has 24 spas in Thailand that it operates – 15 in Bangkok, three in Chiang Mai, two in Phuket and one each in Pattaya, Koh Samui, Krabi, Hua Hin and Phuket.

Wiboon said the company was also eyeing launching operations in Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Japan and South Korea.

“Our business expansion overseas will have three business models – the franchise system like in Kunming, a joint venture with a local partner and self-investment,” he said.

“This [the model] depends on the business opportunity and the legal conditions.”

For franchises, the company’s entrance fee is Bt4.5 million for a five-year contract.

It will provide training and advice on a business plan and take 5 per cent of the revenue a month.

Kunming Tailai Spa Management Co Ltd is the franchisee that operates Let’s Relax Spa in Kunming and has plans to open spas in Chongxing and Sichuan provinces.

Its director Wang Ruoming said the company expected to make four million yuan (Bt22 million) in revenue in the first year of operations of Let’s Relax Spa in Kunming.

The company spent Bt10 million on the design of the business under a Thai spa concept.

It plans to open three more branches next year if the first branch is a success.

“The purchasing power to pay for spas in Kunming is showing strong growth as most of them are also interest to use an original Thai spa,” Wang said.

“As a result, we decided to open the first Thai spa in Kunming.”

Siam Wellness Group has set aside an investment budget of Bt500 million this year, with Bt250 million to be spent on 10 new branches in Bangkok and the provinces and renovating existing branches.

The rest will be spent on spa mergers and acquisitions and acquiring restaurants and other service businesses.

The company said the 10 new branches would employ up to 300 staff this year. At the present the company has 900 staff.

Wiboon said the investment budget would come from cash flow and bank loans.

He said the move would result in total revenue increasing more than 35 per cent this year compared to last year.

At the end of 2015, the company reported total revenue of Bt543.5 million and a net profit of Bt106.49 million.

In the first quarter, it reported total revenue of Bt176.02 million and a net profit Bt35.24 million.

Of its total revenue, 84 per cent comes from its spa, 11 per cent from its hotels and restaurants and the rest from the sale of spa products.

Three-quarters of its customers are foreigners and the rest are Thai.

CP Indonesia unfazed by new entrant Salim Group

JAKARTA – Salim Group’s decision to enter the poultry feed business in Indonesia in a bid to expand has yet to deter publicly listed poultry firm Charoen Pokphand Indonesia, which holds a 34-per-cent market share.

CP Indonesia voiced optimism that its parent company, Charoen Pokphand Group, will support the company, especially in terms of technology.

The Thailand-based conglomerate is one of the biggest poultry players in the world.

“We have not prepared any special strategy to anticipate their entrance into the market.

“We welcome newcomers in the competition,” Charoen Pokphand Indonesia president director Tjiu Thomas Effendy said on Wednesday.

In December, Salim Group purchased a controlling stake in Malaysia-based poultry firm CAB Cakaran.

The conglomerate, through its shell company Plant Wealth Holdings, took a 11.05 per cent stake in Cakaran. It plans to form a joint venture in Indonesia this year. “Our Malaysian partner will do the technology transfer, while Indofood will support the operations,” Salim Group chairman Anthoni Salim said recently.

While CP is strong in poultry feed and day-old chicks, its poultry-based food business is low.

This opens the door for Salim, as the big player in the food industry, to enter, especially as Salim owns 35.8 per cent of Fast Food Indonesia, the licensee for KFC in Indonesia.

Thai Union banks on its innovation initiative

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Thiraphong Chansiri

THAI UNION GROUP, one of the world’s largest seafood companies, targets its global innovation initiative contributing 10 per cent or US$800 million (Bt28.2 billion) of its sales by 2020, said its chief executive, Thiraphong Chansiri.

Thai Union’s boss said that growing innovation revenue from virtually zero at present to $800 million in the next four and a half years was achievable, as the group could leverage its strong brands in every region to introduce new products developed from its Global Innovation Incubator (Gii).

“What makes us different from others is that we have our own leading brands in all regions. We can leverage our strengths in most countries to bring innovations to the markets,” Thiraphong said during an interview with The Nation last week.

Thanks partly to the mergers and acquisitions (M&As) that the company had pursued during the past several years, it currently owns a portfolio of canned seafood brands that are in the top three of their respective markets, such as Chicken of the Sea in the US, John West in the UK, Petit Navire in France, Mareblu in Italy, and Sealect and Fisho in Thailand.

Thai Union expects to see significant results from its Gii from next year, although the first new product launch from the centre is due for the final quarter of this year.

//

“The years 2017 to 2018 are going to be critical to see whether it [Gii] delivers positive, solid results,” he said.

Thai Union is committed to its goal of achieving $8 billion in annual revenue by 2020, despite the recent aborted takeover of Bumble Bee Foods in the US, which had in effect shed $1 billion from the target.

The group now needs to grow by at least 15 per cent annually during the next four and a half years to achieve the 2020 sales target, the CEO said.

“Even after failing with Bumble Bee, we remain committed [to the $8-billion target] because we believe we still have upside potential. It’s not easy, but having an easy target is not our job,” he added.

To partly offset the revenue shortfall from the aborted Bumble Bee deal, Thiraphong explained that Thai Union had come up with three new initiatives that added to its original organic-growth plan plus innovation and M&A strategies, namely, the global food service channel; emerging markets; and marine ingredients business.

Moreover, the $8-billion top-line growth target is only part of Thai Union’s key financial goals for 2020, which also include a gross profit margin of more than 20 per cent and a net margin of 6 per cent or more, he said.

Gross margin is currently about 16-17 per cent, while net margin is 4.5 per cent.

“It’s not only about the top line. It’s also about margin improvement,” he said, adding that innovations will play a critical role in the group’s shift in direction toward high-value businesses. Despite heavy international attacks on the Thai fishing industry with regard to sustainability and labour issues over the last 12-18 months, Thai Union continued to show strong financial results last year and in the first quarter of 2016, and keeps winning a vote of confidence from investors, customers and suppliers, he said.

The group recently won five out of six awards – Best CEO, Best at Investor Relations, Best Managed Company, Most Committed to Corporate Governance, and Best Corporate Social Responsibility – that FinanceAsia magazine gave to large Thai companies in its 2016 poll. “These awards were rated by investors, so that is why we are quite pleased with all these awards, which demonstrate the confidence and trust that investors have in us. If you [just] looked at the news, we should not have been awarded. We have been in the wrong industry in the last 18 months,” the chief executive said.

“I will try to work with Greenpeace. It’s a challenge, but we are always open to all suggestions because we want to do the right things,” he added.

WearYouWant claims to be the trusted digital partner of companies

WEARYOUWANT, a Thai online fashion and beauty marketplace, says it is becoming a trusted digital partner for industry brand names and distributors, creating a solid online presence in the booming Internet industry.

Working with large international brands and distributors as well as smaller and more localised businesses, WearYouWant says it offers a customised e-commerce platform with a strong focus on targeted visibility of merchants’ products.

“Brands want to go digital, and need to, but may lack the know-how, time and resources to be hands-on and do so effectively,” said Julien Chalte, co-founder and chief executive of WearYouWant.

“WearYouWant personalises the experience, creating and servicing every aspect of a merchant’s outlet, from the graphic design of marketing materials to uploading pack-shot images.

“When I look at our monthly pay-outs to our merchants, it is great to see that we are indeed delivering growth to both the smaller independent designer with only one storefront and the big international brands at the same proportional scale.

“The secret for us has been to keep the dual focus of B2B [business-to-business] and B2C [business-to-consumer] and grow the two at the same pace. That has made us and our big and small merchants successful.”

Minor International, a major distributors of brands such GAP, Esprit, Bossini and Red Earth, says it values its partnership with WearYouWant.

“Digital development is rising so fast in Thailand that it is important for us to incorporate the strongest digital sales channels,” said James Richard Amatavivadhana, CEO of Minor International.

“The future of retail is changing, but the core principles of trust, confidence and transparency still reign, especially when it comes to e-commerce. WearYouWant has empowered us to grow digitally and has enabled us to create a flagship online outlet allowing widespread visibility to our brands and products as well as an assurance to consumers that the products they shop are genuine.”

Sam Naghi, owner and managing director of Sam’s Sports shop, is another merchant on WearYouWant’s platform, selling mainly sport shoes.

“Partnering with WearYouWant has made a huge difference for us. We have a whole new revenue stream and a digital storefront where both our products and brand gets noticed by customers we would have been unable to reach ourselves,” he said.

WearYouWant recently received Best E-Commerce Website Awards from the Commerce Ministry’s Department of Business Development in two categories: Best E-Commerce Management and Most Trusted E-Commerce Website.

The awards were presented during the Thailand e-Commerce Day held at “E-Biz Expo” at Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in Bangkok.

WearYouWant forecasts 120-per-cent growth in turnover in the first half of 2016 compared with the first half of 2015.

Disney visitors soak up a new experience in China

Staff members welcome visitors after the opening ceremony of the Shanghai Disney Resort.

RAINFALL failed to dampen visitors’ enthusiasm for the new US$5.5-billion (Bt193 billion) Shanghai Disney Resort.

You Xinwei, 25, who works in the logistics industry, said after taking a Roaring Rapids ride: “There were surprises at every turn the raft took, and it became scarier as we went deeper into a dark cavern.

“The experience was fun and thrilling,” added You, standing in wet shoes and clothing afterwards.

Having visited Hong Kong Disneyland, You said the Shanghai park was larger and offered more high-tech attractions.

Koike Hideya and his wife Kyoto flew to Shanghai from Nagoya, Japan, for a three-day trip. Compared with Tokyo Disneyland, he said the Shanghai park was bigger, was prettier, and its attractions were better with the use of high technology.

The couple, who are in their 40s, were among more than 10,000 visitors to the Walt Disney Co’s sixth resort and among the first group of overseas Disney visitors to the Chinese mainland.

Bob Iger, the company’s chairman and chief executive officer, said on Wednesday: “When we open, we will continue construction to expand … We’ve had some discussions, mostly internal, on what we would like to do next year.”

The resort is the largest foreign investment to date for the California-based company.

“Nothing is as impactful. Nothing creates a connection to our stories, to our brands, to our characters, [more] than a theme-park experience,” Iger was quoted as saying by Bloomberg.

“The experience people have when they spend time in our theme parks is immersive. They not only hear and see our stories but they actually enter them, they live in them.”

While most of the 300 theme parks in China are unprofitable, Disney is leading an incoming wave of mega-parks developed by both local and foreign operators competing for a tourism industry that is set to double in size by 2020.

According to Bloomberg, about 60 more parks will open by 2020 to serve Chinese consumers, including Dalian Wanda Group’s chain of 15 Wanda Cities.

Out of treachery comes success for steamed-crab queen

Sureerat Seepromkhom presents steamed crab products

Sureerat Seepromkhom presents steamed crab products

CHEATED by a middleman in 2011, Sureerat Seepromkhom shifted to delivering her own steamed-crab dishes under the company JQ Foods and used Facebook to promote them

She and her husband opted to cut out the cost of using a middleman, not just because they were cheated but because they had confidence in the quality of their seafood, which comes from Sureerat’s home province Surat Thani.

“We received orders from friends and used word of mouth to make deliveries because it is a low-cost channel and the large number of motorcycle taxis in Bangkok is enough to deliver steamed crabs to clients within one hour,” she said.

At first, she used leaflets to promote the delivery service but it didn’t work. She then opened aFacebook page, promoting her steamed crab as being different from other crab goods, and that generated a lot of buzz quickly.

Now, she delivers more than 100 kilograms of steamed crab per day after delivering only 15kg a day in 2011.

She said “people nowadays cannot wait” for her food, adding that her customers can afford to pay Bt600 or more.

Sureerat said social media were the right channels for small and medium-sized enterprises that didn’t have a merchant, as they provided interactive communication with clients.

She said SMEs had to improve all the time, adding that even though her steamed crab was popular, she had to increase the menu of steamed seafood she sold and also offer innovative dishes to appeal to consumers for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The supply of seafood is a problem for her business. Therefore managing the inventory is important, and so is the quality of her central kitchen, she said.

Thanks to the influence of social media, JQ Foods has been contacted by investors in Singapore, Cambodia and Laos to launch the business in those countries. However, she admitted that the supply of crabs in Thailand was not enough to serve consumers in neighbouring countries.

“We are interested in expanding JQ Foods in AEC [the Asean Economic Community] but only in terms of know-how and seafood sauces. About 99 per cent of JQ Foods’ customers like our sauces. We are negotiating with the investors in those three countries to tell them they should use their own seafood instead of Thailand’s,” she said.

Sureerat is targeting annual sales revenue of Bt1 billion within three years from Bt350 million currently through expanding the business to franchise it upcountry.

“We plan to have 45 branches upcountry, from 19 branches in Bangkok currently. But the franchise business has to be cautious as well because we want franchisees to execute the steamed seafood [business] as an owner not as an investor,” she said.

If her sales revenue reaches Bt1 billion, Sureerat has the ambitious goal of listing the company on the stock market. But listing would not be to raise money, she said. She wants to bring esteem to her family and inspire the next generation to start their own businesses even if they come from a small family in the provinces.

Thailand to host IBM’s second Asean design studio

US-BASED IBM plans to set up a design studio in Thailand to provide cognitive-driven digital experiences for clients, after opening its first Asean studio in Singapore early this month.

Stefan Hirsch, a senior executive of IBM Asean, told The Nation that the company had not yet fixed a date for opening the Thai design studio, but noted that it would be a smaller-scale studio than the Singapore facility.

The Singapore studio, opened on June 9, is IBM’s 30th studio worldwide, aimed at helping clients reinvent their business for the digital age and develop individualised experiences with cognitive computing capabilities and experience design.

IBM has maintained a Bangkok-based team of experts in multiple disciplines with local capabilities that can help Thai clients transform their business digitally, Hirsch said.

On June 9, IBM also opened its Watson Centre at Marina Bay in Singapore, an event presided over by Singaporean Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

IBM Studios in Singapore now serves as a regional hub with more than 100 designers and digital experts from IBM’s iX Interactive Experience unit. Worldwide, IBM has a total of about 1,300 designers at its 30 studios.

To deliver results, clients work with teams of creative designers, researchers, digital strategists, analytics and cognitive-solution experts when analysing business challenges and creating new business models and offerings.

Among the first creations of IBM Studios in Asean are Singapore Airlines’ two mobile applications for its pilots.

The FlyNow app enables pilots to prepare their flights using relevant operational information in a timely manner, while the Roster app aims at enhancing pilots’ awareness of their duties and qualification compliance for operations.

In Thailand, Hirsch said IBM would focus on helping clients in finance and banking, telecoms, retail and healthcare, among other sectors, to reinvent their business for the digital economy.

Bangkok’s renowned Bumrungrad Hospital is one of IBM’s clients in healthcare, using the cognitive computing system for cancer treatment.

Hirsch said there would be further efforts to enhance doctor, patient and staff experiences for more relevant and personalised services. In addition, IBM’s studios aim to be incubator studios for business and tech start-ups such as those for mobile banking and financial-technology services, he said, adding that the firm will also help large clients identify new opportunities and partnerships in the digital economy.

The executive said Thai consumers were digitally mature, as evidenced by various indicators, so there were now opportunities for smart farm-tech start-ups, for example, in partnership with telecom carriers using weather forecasting and other big data.

Robert Morris, vice president for global labs at IBM Research, said the company was also experimenting in a new type of ledgers using blockchain technology with the New York Stock Exchange and major banks.

These widely distributed ledgers, with a majority consensus to verify records of value for almost anything, are regarded as a new way to create cheaper, faster and more reliable records similar to those used by the Bitcoin system. Morris said it was harder to change or violate the system because of the minimum one-third-majority consensus requirement.

According to IBM, blockchain applications can support new payment, settlement, supply-chain and business processes, while enabling Internet of Things data, making it possible to process information from various devices such as RFID-based locations, barcode-scanners, and device-reported data.

This will allow smarter transactions throughout the entire supply chain, especially for more efficient financial transactions or shipping services, among others, he explained.

Piyush Gupta, chief executive officer of DBS Group, said blockchain technology would change the landscape of banking and financial services from a hub-and-spokes system to a widely distributed ledger system.

He cited Alibaba as an example of a fast-growing major platform for payments, lending and wealth management, in addition to e-commerce.

Thai Airways to recruit flight attendants on short-term contracts

THAI

THAI Airways International plans to recruit up to 600 new graduates as flight attendants to serve its network expansion ahead of the high season, which includes returning to Moscow and adding other destinations.

THAI president Charamporn Jotikasthira said yesterday that the airline aimed to hire qualified persons aged 24-30, or “first jobbers”.

They will be working under a three-year contact plus a three-year extension. The contact will end when they reach 30, meaning that applicants’ ages will be 24-27.

Employing young people or first-jobbers is the new trend in aviation. This has already happened at many other airlines, but it will be the first time for Thai Airways.

The airline also expects that short-term staff will gain working and travel experience while learning best service practices at the national carrier.

They could apply all this at their new jobs.

One of the airline’s executives said hiring first-job?bers on short contracts could help the airline save on personnel expenses and overall operating costs compared with taking on permanent employees.

The airline says it will post the openings on its web?site very soon.

THAI’s board held a meeting on Wednesday and finalised network-expansion plans. Frequencies on existing routes will be increased and some cancelled destinations resumed ahead of the peak season starting in October.

THAI will inaugurate three direct flights per week to Tehran on October 1 to cash in on the wealthy and high spenders there. Some 250,000 Iranians travel to Thailand each year.

Although Thai AirAsia X has already begun servic ing the Tehran route ahead of THAI, the two airlines cater to different market segments.

THAI plans to resurrect the Bangkok-Moscow route on November 1. The market now has high potential after Russia’s economic problems drove some budget airlines out of the market while the wealthy remained travel-bound.

The airline will have to compete with major full-service airlines operating on the same route.

“Russia is a big market and there are many high spenders. Full-service airlines are [competing] for this segment,” Charamporn said.

THAI will push Bangkok to become a true aviation hub for Southeast Asia by increasing frequencies of exist ing flights such as Bangkok-Manila and Bangkok-Jakarta.

The moves are expected to serve connecting passen gers from the Middle East, India and Europe.

Thai Smile Airways, THAI’s budget airline, will increase frequencies to Yangon, Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh City and Kuala Lumpur in late October and start operating between Bangkok and Cebu in the Philippines in November.

THAI allows Thai Smile to seek new routes through out the region. At this stage, Thai Smile is lining up Nakhon Si Thammarat in Thailand, Danang in Vietnam, Kota Kinabalu in East Malaysia, and Surabaya and Medan in Indonesia.

“We see a very bright future for us in the coming high season this year. It’s a time for THAI to move fast,” Charamporn said.

Mahachai Hospital pioneers weekend speciality care

HOSPITAL

WITH AN increasing number of international research studies demonstrating significant evidence of the “weekend effect” on patient outcomes and mortality, Mahachai Hospital will officially launch its “Weekend Hospital” this Sunday as a pioneering effort to provide speciality healthcare services.

Pongpat Patnavanich, chairman of Mahachai Group’s executive committee, said it was a big challenge to provide the same service on weekends as on weekdays.

It took a year of preparations for the hospital to launch this service, starting from changing the mindsets of personnel and patients and the management system. “We chose Mahachai Hospital 1 as a pilot project for a specialised medical centre before expanding to the hospital’s subsidiaries. We aim to be a role model for other public and private hospitals to open weekend speciality care services for the sake of patients at large,” Pongpat said.

He said that though there was no research about the “weekend effect” on patient outcomes in Thailand, it could not be ignored, especially with questions about reduced availability of staff and services on weekends.

In addition to limited resources, many physicians and specialists also tended not to work on weekends. This is the reason many patients avoid getting themselves admitted on weekends except in emergency cases, he said. “Thanks to the great dedication and inspiration of the specialists and staff at the hospital and its subsidiaries, Mahachai Weekend Hospital will ensure that patients on weekends will get the same clinical standards and prices as on weekdays.”

Pongpat noted that the Weekend Hospital concept was in line with the Public Health Ministry’s policy to arrange 12 health zones as a way to reform Thailand’s health mechanisms to reduce disparities and provide people with greater access to better medical services.

The Weekend Hospital will enable patients to access quality medical care so that they do not have to rush to hospitals in Bangkok.

Mahachai Hospital started operations in 1989. It was the first privately owned general hospital in Samut Sakhon province.

The group has been expanding its services with the establishment of Mahachai Maeklong Hospital, Machai Hospital 2 in Om Noi, Kathum Baen, Petcharat Hospital in Phetchaburi province, and Mahachai Hospital 3, which has been initiated as a centre particularly for patients under the Social Security Fund.

In addition, Thai Medical 88 was created as a central distributor to provide medical equipment, supplies and medicines for the group’s hospitals.

Mahachai Hospital has received US Joint Commission International Accreditation among others.

Pongpat said a 24-hour cardiac centre was among the renowned medical services it provides thanks to highly experienced physicians and well-trained staff. Since the opening, the hospital has treated more than 1,000 patients with cardiac catheterisation and about 100 heart-surgery patients.

Listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand in July 1996, Mahachai Group has enjoyed continued growth.

Last year, the group reported Bt172 million in consolidated net profit, a big jump over Bt120.9 million in 2014. The hospital has 500-600 outpatients a day.

Pongpat said the group was now considering an investment plan to develop a flagship hospital in Bangkok, but it had not set any specific time frame or chosen the location.

4G

ADVANCED INFO Service (AIS) has introduced the prepaid “Zeed SIM 4G YouTube” package to tap teenage heavy data users and has targeted 1.5 million new users with this new package this year.

The package allows users to enjoy watching videos on YouTube free and with no time limit up to a total of 24 gigabytes (2GB per month for 12 months), plus 6GB of free Internet (500 megabytes per month for 12 months), in addition to free AIS Wi-Fi for four months.

As well, customers can make phone calls on any network for only 25 satang per second (Bt1 for the first minute). Customers can use the service continuously as long as they top up their accounts by at least Bt100 per month.

Titipong Khiewpaisal, AIS senior vice president for marketing, said the company currently had around 33 million prepaid mobile-phone subscribers out of a total of more than 38 million subscribers. Seven million to 8 million of its prepaid users are teenagers. They consume 2.1GB of data per month per person on average.

The company has budgeted around Bt30 million for the marketing campaign for this new SIM card package until the end of this year.

Recently Total Access Communication introduced the “DTAC Super 4G” prepaid SIM card package, targeting the growing base of prepaid heavy data users. DTAC has targeted a million new prepaid subscribers this year through the new package.

The DTAC Super 4G SIM package enables users to enjoy entertainment content without any limit, and they can view YouTube for free from midnight to 8am. They can also access music streaming free of charge 24 hours a day through DTAC’s Music Infinite hub of music-streaming applications, and have up to 12GB of high-speed Internet.
