PETROCHEMICALS

Indorama Ventures (IVL) has completed the 100 per cent acquisition of BP Alabama Petrochem Complex, adding economies of scale and integration to its PET business.

The complex at Decatur, Alabama, has the annual capacity of 1.02 million tonnes of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and naphthalene dicarboxylate (NDC). It is situated adjacent to the company’s AlphaPet PET plant and has been its main supplier of PTA since the factory was commissioned in 2009. IVL did not disclose the acquisition cost.

For similar rationale of integration, scale, technology and HVA business, IVL said that in the second quarter the acquisition of the 720,000 tonne PET, PTA and IPA complex of Cepsa in Cadiz, Spain would be completed.

“Businesses such as Decatur add unprecedented economies of scale and integration to our PET business and supports the growing need of our customers as well as that of our shareholders alike. As we build our scale in North America, we will continue to strive to be the supplier of choice for our customers and drive our growth trajectory as a world-class chemical company,” said Aloke Lohia, group CEO of IVL.

He said the acquisition brings the company competitive feedstock security with scale advantages, technology ownership and innovative products.

The acquisition of the Decatur Paraxylene, PTA and NDC assets coincide with United States International Trade Commission’s affirmative vote to apply anti subsidy and anti-dumping duties on PET resin imports from China, Canada, India and Oman.

Nelson Leung, left, chief executive officer of BSS Holdings, and Lee Jin Woo, country manager of Line Biz Plus, pose with mascots of Rabbit and Brown to present a new payment service called ‘Rabbit Line Plus’.

RABBIT LINE Pay, a newly launched payment service via the Line mobile application, is seen as a move towards a “cashless society” in the digital-economy era.

The service, which is a mix of both online and offline payment platforms, can be used to pay for products and services at shops and restaurants such as McDonald’s, Tesco Lotus and Big C as well as online shops such as Lazada and Ensogo.

The new service emerged after a 50:50 partnership was signed yesterday between BSS Holdings Co, operator of the Rabbit smart card, and Line Biz Plus, the operator of Line Pay.

Under the agreement, BSS Holdings will acquire 50 per cent of capital-increased shares of Line Biz Plus, and the “Line Pay” service is now renamed “Rabbit Line Pay”.

“We believe our joint venture will help make cashless payments more of a norm in Thailand,” said Lee Jin Woo, country manager of Line Biz Plus.

He said the service would first be available at partnering shops, possibly in the third quarter, and would go full scale in the capital in the fourth quarter.

Rabbit is an offline payment card that cardholders can use to pay for fares on the BTS Skytrain and for products at more than 250 shops and restaurants. So far, more than 5 million Rabbit cards have been issued and there are more than 4,000 Rabbit card-receiving machines across Bangkok and its surrounding areas.

“This venture will help Rabbit expand its customer base to include the 33 million Line users, and also expand into provincial areas,” said Nelson Leung, chief executive officer of BBS Holdings Co.

OUTLOOK

TIPCO FOODS, the producer of Tipco fruit juice, expects sales growth in the 100 per cent fruit juice segment this year, managing director Ekkapol Pongsathaporn said yesterday.

He made the conservative forecast that the segment would grow by 3-5 per cent this year and the company expects its sales to grow in line with the overall market.

Part of the sales growth will be contributed by its new products, three of which were launched yesterday. Tipco Super Kid is the country’s first fruit juice especially for children, Tipco Season-based Mocktail is a limited-edition fruit juice available only this summer, and Tipco Homsuwan Pineapple is a fresh-fruit product for health-conscious consumers.

Strong foundation

These three products will lay a strong foundation for Tipco to become the “wellness brand”, Ekkapol said.

“This move will not only strengthen our market base but also provide us with greater opportunity to expand into related businesses, but with a focus on beverages and food for health for better quality of life,” he added.

Tipco is to announce its new business direction soon.

Ekkapol said the company would focus more on research and development this year to support its launch of new products.

At the end of 2015, the value of Thailand’s market of 100 per cent fruit juice was about Bt4.6 billion.

In the 100 per cent fruit juice segment alone, Tipco has a market share of 51 per cent. If the vegetable juice segment is included, the| company has a share of around 40 per cent.

Thai Union to invest Bt500m for permanent R&D

R&D

THAI UNION Group (TU), the world’s largest processor of shelf-stable tuna and owner of a portfolio of leading global seafood brands, plans to invest at least Bt500 million to establish a permanent space for its Global Innovation Incubator by next year.

Speaking at the official opening of the pilot plant of the current GII in Mahidol University’s faculty of science, president and chief executive officer Thiraphong Chansiri said Thai Union expected to launch the first product developed from the GII in the fourth quarter of this year and would continue to roll out many new products originating from this centre to Europe, the United States, and other markets.

“We will spend no less than Bt500 million on land and construction alone, not including equipment and other expenses. With a size that is five times that of the current centre, we believe we will be able to increase the number of researchers in our facilities by several times from the current 100 people,” he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak, who observed the GII pilot plant yesterday, said the cooperation that Thai Union had clinched with universities in this project boded well for his dream of transforming Thailand into a new economic-development model to overcome its sluggish growth.

Thiraphong said that besides developing new products, GII was also focusing on developing new production processes, one outcome of which would be revolutionising the canned-tuna industry for the first time in 50 years, within the next two years.

The company earlier earmarked Bt600 million for R&D in tuna products alone.

Current government incentives such as the mobility scheme that allows university researchers to work for the private sector and the International Headquarters scheme that slashes personal income tax of researchers to 15 per cent are sufficient to support innovation investments by the private sector, he said.

Somkid said he had asked Thai Union to consider joining the Ministry of Science and Technology’s “Food Innopolis” project that would be launched in the future.

Associate Professor Dr Sittiwat Lertsiri, dean of Mahidol’s faculty of science, said the collaboration with Thai Union had resulted in two more companies talking with the university about similar projects.

Thiraphong said fierce competition and declining profit margins in its industry in world markets prompted TU to start investing in R&D in 2014.

“The objective is to create differentiation and getting out of price-only competition and commoditisation, as Thailand’s wage costs are no longer the lowest. We will link science and technology to create high-value-added products such as allowing us to expand into the nutrition and cosmetics sectors,” he said.

TU yesterday also announced it was expanding the space of its current GII to 1,200 square metres and would invest more than Bt70 million for new research equipment.

On this occasion, three joint postgraduate programmes pertaining to the R&D at the GII were also signed with Mahidol, Kasetsart University, and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi.

Kicked off in December 2014, the GII facility currently comprises six major platforms, including the pilot factory, a chemistry laboratory, and a nutrition laboratory.

Digital agency hopes to hit Bt100m in billings

DIGITAL MEDIA

TO CAPITALISE on the increasing investment by advertisers in digital media, Rabbit’s Tale, a Thai holistic digital agency, aims to double its billings to more than Bt100 million this year, mainly driven by its clients in the telecommunication, insurance, retail and banking sectors.

Recently, the Digital Advertising Association (Thailand) predicted that this year’s digital advertising expenditure was likely to pass Bt9.9 billion, an increase of 23 per cent from 2015.

This is a result of the migration of advertising spending from traditional to digital media because brands and marketers have realised the importance of these new communication channels that allow them to hit their targeted audiences with cost-effectiveness as well as to help boost sales.

Managing director Rungroj Tancharoen said the insurance, retail and financial and banking sectors were expected to advertise more via digital channels throughout this year on top of key players in the telecom, automotive and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sectors.

“The emerging trend of [financial technology] is believed to be a significant driver for financial and banking services to put more weight on digital communication strategy to engage with their customers. In the meantime, retail business is also shifting its focus to e-commerce to boost sales amid the economic slowdown,” Rungroj said.

Video consumption via online media platforms is still playing a key role in digital marketing after third- and fourth-generation wireless broadband was fully rolled out early this year.

“We expect to see more growth in terms of new mobile Internet users, particularly in rural areas. This would help marketers and brands gain further reach to mass targets digitally,” said Sunard Thanasanaksorn, co-founder and executive account director.

“Consumers in the digital space are no longer segmented but are now a mass,” Sunard stressed.

To respond to this emerging trend, the company is hiring about 30 new staff this year, which will bring its workforce to 100 by the end of this year to manage 10 clients.

Chanin Aranyawat, co-founder and executive financial director, said Rabbit’s Tale aimed to see tremendous growth of 100 per cent this year in terms of billings to more than Bt100 million, from about Bt50 million last year. Half of that amount will come from digital-media planning and digital campaigning, and the rest from online content management and digital production.

Started in 2009 with Bt2-billion registered capital by two founders, Rabbit’s Tale is now ranked among the country’s top 10 digital and creative agencies in terms of billings, revenue and number of young employees, aged between 23 and 38 years.

Bt8.04 bn in bank guarantee needed prior to next auction

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/Bt8-04-bn-in-bank-guarantee-needed-prior-to-next-a-30282898.html

THE NATIONAL Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission will require bidders for a 900MHz licence in the next auction round to place a bank guarantee of Bt8.04 billion prior to the event, as opposed to lodging Bt644 million in cash as in the 900MHz auction last December, according to draft rules issued by the agency.

If after the auction, the winner then fails to fulfil the initial payment condition on time, the licence will be awarded to the bidder proposing the second-highest price.

If there is only one bidder in this new 900MHz round, the NBTC will still allow the auction to take place as the starting price is already high.

The NBTC panel drafting the auction rules will submit the proposed rules for its telecom committee’s consideration today.

Under the proposals, the starting bid price is set at Bt75.654 billion and the bidders each can raise the price by Bt161 million for each round until the bidding ends.

In the previous round in December, they were permitted to raise the price by Bt644 million per round until the licence price reached its full value. Bidders were then able to raise the price by Bt322 million per round.

The NBTC is setting tougher auction rules on this occasion to address the problem of a possible default in regard to payment of the initial licence upfront payment by prospective winners.

This follows the failure of Jas Mobile Broadband – winner of a 900MHz licence in the previous auction – to make such a fee payment by the NBTC’s deadline of March 21.

It is this licence which is now being put up for auction, and the starting price of around Bt75.65 is the amount that Jas successfully offered three months ago.

The total licence payment terms are the same as in the last auction: the winner will pay Bt8.04 billion in the first year, Bt4.02 billion in both the second and third years, and the remainder in the fourth year.

The telecom committee will submit the draft for the NBTC board’s consideration on April 5, and will hold a public hearing on April 22.

Bids will be invited from May 13 to June 12, with prospective bidders submitting documents on June 14.

The NBTC will hold the auction on June 24.

Meanwhile, the NBTC subcommittee assigned to consider possible damage from the Jas case will hold its first meeting today.

Yesterday, during a seminar on the 4G held by Than Settakij newspaper, NBTC telecom committee chairman Settapong Malisuwan tried to convince both Advanced Info Service (AIS) and True Corp to join the new auction round.

Somchai Lertsutiwong , AIS’s chief executive officer, said the company was awaiting the final auction rules and it was the board that would make the final decision on whether to bid.

He also acknowledged that AIS had signed a memorandum of understanding with TOT on March 29 for a strategic partnership to allow AIS to use the agency’s 2.1GHz spectrum for a trial service offering on a non-commercial basis.

True Corp CEO Suphachai Chearavanont said True needed time to consider whether to join the auction in light of the new bank-guarantee condition.

TCEB maps out 2nd year for successful trade show campaign

ศาสตร์เกษตรดินปุ๋ย : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/TCEB-maps-out-2nd-year-for-successful-trade-show-c-30282891.html

AFTER THE success of last year’s initial “Asean Rising Trade Show” (ART), the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has developed another campaign for nine selected international exhibitions.

The bureau expects 30-per-cent growth in the number of international trade visitors to more than 190,000, generating Bt15.6 billion in revenue for the 2016 fiscal year.

Supawan Teerarat, the TCEB’s vice president for strategic and business development, said the ART campaign was aimed at upgrading the Thai exhibition industry, providing financial support for international marketing activities, developing the exhibition network through collaboration with key government bodies, and collaborating with the private-sector organisations and exhibition-industry associations to help identify market opportunities.

Under the criteria set by the TCEB in partnership with the Thai Exhibition Association and the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI), nine trade shows have been selected for the ART campaign.

They are GRTE 2016 (Global Rubber, Latex & Tire Expo), Automotive Manufacturing 2016, Assembly and Automation Technology 2016, Food & Hotel Thailand 2016, SIMA Asean Thailand 2016, Thailand Lab International 2016, Beyond Beauty Asean Bangkok 2016, Asean Sustainable Energy Week 2016, and 3W Expo 2016.

The TCEB has developed a three-year (2015-2017) ART campaign with a target to drive 30-per-cent annual growth in the international-exhibition industry, focusing on five fundamental industries according to the Asean Economic Community’s growth trends, namely automotive, energy, food and agricultural products, health and beauty, and infrastructure.

Supawan said that this year, the TCEB was providing more marketing activities to bring in more visitors and buyers for the trade shows. It will create international media support with a testimonial campaign via CNN’s special “Road to Asean” series, which will be broadcast between April and September. In addition, the bureau will organise special awards for the best performance and best recognition.

Jaruwan Suwannasart, TCEB’s director of exhibitions and events, said Thailand had been positioned as Asean’s ultimate exhibition marketplace and a key driver for national economic growth. Thailand is also a regional trade centre and a production and export powerhouse for various industries.

“Thanks to the ART campaign last year with 12 selected trade shows, the number of international exhibitions increased by 31.9 per cent, and the number of Asean trade visitors represented 45.3 per cent.

“These achievements formed a connection between key trade associations in Asean and promoting sustainable growth of the exhibition sector,” Jaruwan said.

Spending on digital advertising forecast to soar by 23% this year

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/Spending-on-digital-advertising-forecast-to-soar-b-30282883.html

TOTAL SPENDING via digital media this year is estimated to pass Bt9.9 billion, up by 23 per cent, while the most popular online channels for brands and advertisers are Facebook and YouTube, followed by online display ads, according to the Digital Advertising Association (Thailand).

“Although overall advertising spending early this year saw a drop of 6.73 per cent compared with the same period last year, marketers and brands continue to spend heavily on digital channel, where there was a significant increase. So we forecast Bt9.927 billion in digital advertising spending this year,” DAAT president Siwat Chawareewong said yesterday.

He said advertisers had changed their communication strategy by shifting from traditional to digital media because these communication channels allow them to hit their targeted audiences with cost-effectiveness.

“Amid the economic slowdown, brands and marketers are putting more focus on short-term strategies by using digital media to lead customers to make a purchase, including e-commerce, rather than building brand awareness,” he explained.

The DAAT forecasts that spending on digital advertising will rise by 23 per cent to Bt9.927 billion this year from Bt8.064 billion in 2015.

Encouraged by the surge of online video consumption and active mobile Internet users after the full launch of third- and fourth-generation wireless broadband, social-media networks have become the most popular tools to engage directly with target audiences and boost sales.

Arpapat Boonrod, managing director of marketing-information firm TNS (Thailand), said that last year the telecommunication sector led the way in online advertising spending, followed by automotive and skincare, while banking and financial services faced a slight drop.

The rising stars so far this year have been the insurance sector with 44-per-cent growth, followed by non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages and government organisations.

These findings were derived through a collaboration of the DAAT and TNS Thailand, a media-research firm under the WPP Group. They questioned 23 digital agencies about the ad-spending habits they expected from their clients from the current quarter onwards.

The agencies participating in the survey represent more than 80 per cent of total digital-ad expenditure.

NMG calls for quick action in share acquisition case

ศาสตร์เกษตรดินปุ๋ย : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/NMG-calls-for-quick-action-in-share-acquisition-ca-30282835.html

NATION MULTIMEDIA GROUP (NMG) yesterday issued a statement urging the authorities to quickly investigate alleged violation of stock market rules in the acquisition of NMG’s shares.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday filed a criminal complaint with police against News Network Corp (News), Polaris Capital (Polar) and individual investor Siwasit Sainamphueng for alleged wrongdoing.

NMG chief executive officer Duangkamol Chotana said in a statement that police should quickly investigate the SEC complaint about alleged violation of stock market rules so as to boost transparency in the Thai capital market.

Based on the SEC complaint, NMG believes it had made a valid argument that the three parties had acted in concert to acquire NMG shares in violation of stock market regulations.

“This case concerning acquisition of NMG shares is a complicated case for the capital market. It’s rather difficult to understand, but some facts have now emerged so we hope that this case will help upgrade the Thai stock market’s regulatory standard,” she said.

News, Polar to fight case

Meanwhile, News and Polar yesterday also issued statements clarifying their positions over the SEC criminal complaint in which the two listed firms and Siwasit were accused of breaking the rules on share acquisition with an intent to illegally take over a listed company.

News was formerly called Solution Corner (1988) or SLC, while Polar was known as Wattana Capital.

According to the SEC complaint filed with the National Police Bureau’s Economic Crimes Division, News, Polar and Siwasit did not comply with the SEC’s rules when they jointly bought shares of NMG in December 2014.

Under the rules, any share acquisition in excess of 5 per cent is required to be reported to the SEC and any share acquisition in excess of 25 per cent of total shareholdings of a listed firm is required to be accompanied by a tender offer to buy the rest of the shares.

Both News and Polar denied the SEC charges and vowed to fight the case in court.

News also told the SEC that its shareholding ratio in NMG had declined because other shareholders had recently exercised their rights to buy new NMG stock.

Airbus Helicopters demonstrates its new H145 series rotorcraft, which it is currently |promoting in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Taiwan. It aims to double sales in the region over the next five years.

AIRBUS HELICOPTERS aims to double its sales in Southeast Asia and Taiwan to 200 units over the next five years, mainly from the new H145 series, which is being promoted in the region.

Thailand is an important market for Airbus Helicopters in terms of driving growth and demand, as the tourism sector is growing, medical emergency services have a bright future, and oil and gas business is also huge, said Lionel Sinai-Sinelnikoff, vice president for customers at the France-based company.

Airbus Helicopters also sees huge demand in Indonesia, emerging demand in the Philippines, and more room for business expansion in Taiwan, where it plans to enter with its new H145 model for the first time.

In Thailand, Airbus Helicopter’s customers increased from six in 2009 to 14 in 2015. It plans to have 11 H145 in operation by 2017, from the current fleet of 9.

The H145 civilian helicopter is back in Asia to showcase demonstration flights in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Taiwan.

The first H145 demo tour in the region was held in Southeast Asia in 2013, covering Thailand and Malaysia, since which time there has been increasing interest in the rotorcraft, especially in the emergency medical services (EMS) and commercial/business aviation segments, he said.

Current and potential customers will have an opportunity to get familiar with this best-selling light twin-engine rotorcraft, which incorporates Airbus Helicopters’ trademark Fenestronand innovative Helionix avionics suite for enhanced safety, increased performance and reduced pilot workload, he added.

Equipped with a large cabin accommodating up to eight passengers – or 10 in special-operations seating – a compact airframe and powerful engines, the H145 features sophisticated mission capabilities and flexibility, especially in high-and-hot operating conditions, the vice president said.

The H145 is the latest member of the 4-tonne-class H145 family, which has a fleet of 1,230 aircraft in service around the world clocking over 4.4 million flight hours.

Although the aircraft is very popular in the EMS and corporate transportation segments, its built-in flexibility makes it the best choice for a wide variety of missions, Lionel Sinai-Sinelnikoff said.

The newest, enhanced H145, which entered into service in mid-2014, has already seen some 54 helicopters in operation in 14 countries, accumulating more than 15,400 flight hours with an average availability of over 90 per cent.
