Clothes with choreographed moves

London-based fashion brand Cos recently launched its new Soma collection of 17 menswear essentials and presented at the major fashion event Pitti Uomo through a choreographed work by Wayne McGregor performed by 10 of his dancers.

The dance work focused on everyday movements – the roll of a sleeve, the way a collar catches at the neck, fabric brushing against skin, fingers tugging at a cuff absentmindedly– gestures which alter how clothes sit on the body.

The colour palette has been narrowed to white, navy and grey and each style encapsulates the Cos aesthetic –wearable and versatile, while quietly inventive. The design is explored and function is brought to the forefront.

“We are constantly exploring and innovating, finding inspiration for our collections from every discipline of the art world, including dance. Everyday movements of clothes on the body were the starting point for Soma, and it has been an honour to see the collection come to life at Pitti Uomo through choreography,” said Karin Gustafsson, the brand’s creative director.

Soma encapsulates the core Cos aesthetic and values, using traditional methods and new techniques to form an understated collection, designed for longevity.

“Soma examines the organic connection and physical fluency between garment and the everyday movement of the wearer. The elements present in the natural environment, have inspired and form part of the musical score. My choreography, performed by the dancers, has movements which are both familiar and unfamiliar, light, inventive and playful, but simple in their essence,” McGregor explained.

The performance is available on CosStores.com and the collection can be purchased online in Europe, USA and South Korea on September 6.

Asics and Onitsuka Tiger mark their founder’s 100th birthday with limited-edition sneakers

POPULAR SPORTS brands Asics and Onitsuka Tiger are celebrating founder Kihachiro Onitsuka’s 100th birthday by releasing a range of limited-edition sneakers and apparel that are on sale through next Sunday only.

In 1949, Onitsuka used his last name to establish his own footwear company and turned his living room in Kobe, Japan into a small factory to produce basketball shoes. He expanded his business in 1977 by setting up Asics, which he hoped would help his fellow citizens develop a healthy and active lifestyle.

This special edition features a fresh sunflower design in red, orange and yellow in recognition of Onitsuka’s passion for artist Vincent van Gogh. Each design is being released in 1918 pairs though as these are for the entire world, stocks are expected to run out fast.

Asic Gel-Quantum 360 KO100 sneakers, Bt6,500

“We want to remind people that as modern life gets busier, Kihachiro Onitsuka’s desire to create sound minds and bodies has never been more important – both for individuals and society as a whole. We’ll be organising more centennial celebrations as the year goes on” says Motoi Oyama, chief executive officer of Asics Corporation.

The Asics Gel-Quantum 360 KO100 sneakers are constructed with 360 degrees of Asics Gel technology cushioning and are ideal for both genders. The heel is inspired by the himawari, or sunflower in Japanese while the rubber sole and knit upper are in shades of yellow and orange – designed to mimic the range of tones in a sunflower.

Asictiger Gel-Mai KO100 sneakers, Bt4,900

The unisex Asictiger Gel-Mai KO100 offers a unique asymmetrical eyelet stay, which tightens around both the forefoot and ankle of the shoe. The volume of the midsole emphasises the fuzeGel technology and superior cushioning, both key features of the Gel-Mai. The multi-coloured upper includes subtle sunflower-inspired patterns splashed along the mesh and suede overlays.

Onitsuka Tiger Corsair KO100 sneakers, Bt4,500

The Onitsuka Tiger Corsair KO100 features increased cushioning, arch cookies, a full-length midsole, thicker heel and EVA midsole material to give the shoe a more comfortable fit. A new upper design features a splayed sunflower print while maintaining the same silhouette of the original Corsair sneakers.

KO100 tee and jersey pants, Bt4,786 and Bt3,626

The limited edition KO100 sportswear includes SS T-shirts and jersey pants made from recycled materials and without the use of fabric to reflect the brand’s commitment to sustainability and Kihachiro Onitsuka’s founding vision.

The apparel features the logos of Asics, Asicstiger and Onitsuka Tiger ASICS, with an embroidered gold sunflower. The brand will donate $10 (Bt310) from every KO100 shoes and clothing purchase to the Right to Play organisation to support children in Lebanon to play sports for 10 weeks.

The limited edition is available at Siam Centre and Asics’ online stores. Find out more at http://www.Asics.com and the AscisThailand page on Facebook.

Vincent reborn at Hong Kong’s Van Gogh Senses

Van Gogh Senses – billed as the world’s first art-theme concept store dedicated to Vincent van Gogh – recently opened in Hong Kong’s Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts.

Designed to be more than just a place to shop, it lets customers “experience the art of gifting” and select “the perfect curated surprise for their loved ones”.

Visitors have the option to create gift combos inspired by some of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings from confectionery, teas and coffees, and museum collection items.

The boutique, which is licensed by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, is naturally lit from historic wooden French doors. The store presents Van Gogh’s art as a river of butterflies flying through, in a tribute to “Poppies and Butterflies”. The “Sunflowers Wall” is similarly inspired by a masterpiece.

Beverages include Sunflower Bouquet Cold Brew Tea and there are cold-brew coffees and other delicacies.

The packaging used for the gifts includes the “Wheat Field with a Reaper Confectionery Box”.

Gifts include the “Tea Combo” bearing a reproduction of “Small Bottle with Peonies and Blue Delphiniums” on the packaging.

The month-long campaign “Best Sunflowers at Tai Kwun” gives visitors a chance to have their photo taken in front of the Sunflowers Wall and share it on Facebook. The best weekly image gets a HK$200 gift voucher. The first 50 participants on June 16 and 17 will also receive boxes of mini-palmier.

The Tai Kwun Centre occupies the former Central Police Station and bears its colloquial name.

Swiss watchmaker Oris blends top-class Swiss craftsmanship and innovations to its new series of Artelier Skeleton timepieces.

The process of “skeletonisation”, the watchmaker explains, involves removing part of the dial to reveal the inner workings of the mechanical movement underneath. This requires additional and painstaking finishing, and when complete makes for a spectacular, dizzying display, created by the constant, balletic rotation of the movement’s wheels.

The beautiful 33 mm ladies’ watch boasts a skeletonised part of the dial that is complemented by fluid, classically shaped hands, a silver guilloche dial ring with polished hour markers, and the option of a diamond-set dial.

This year, Oris is also introducing the option of sustainable leather straps into the Artelier line, in keeping with its mission to bring change for the better.
