Thailand will beat Malaysia in the semi-final home leg of the 2022 Asean Football Federation (AFF) tournament on Tuesday, the national team’s coach Alexandre Polking said hopefully on Sunday.

He made this remark after Thailand lost to Malaysia 1-0 in the semi-final away leg at the Malaysian National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Saturday.

According to the Bernama news agency, the match began with Thailand, which entered the game with an unbeaten record, dominating possession and nearly stunning Malaysia with a 4th-minute goal when Thai player Pansa Hemviboon’s free header sailed just wide.

“However, it was Malaysia who drew first blood when Mohamad Faisal Abdul Halim got to the ball first off a header by his teammate, Ruventhiran Vengadesan, in the 11th minute,” said Bernama.

THE NATION

Manchester United have progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup following a 3-1 win over Everton this evening.

Erik ten Hag’s men were off to a flying start inside five minutes when Antony opened the scoring following great link-up play between Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.

The away side pulled things level through Conor Coady just ten minutes later after sustained pressure from the Toffees.

Another quick start from the Reds after half-time saw us restore our lead. Rashford, who showed great footwork down the left, drilled the ball into the Everton box and it was turned into their own net by Coady.

Rashford, man-of-the-hour, sealed the win from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time.

Despite a scrappy affair, a 3-1 win means our name is in the hat for the next round.

In true FA Cup fashion, both teams were welcomed onto the pitch with an absolutely electric atmosphere inside Old Trafford.

And it didn’t take United long to hit the ground running, scoring inside the opening five minutes. Anthony Martial took control in the middle of the park before setting Marcus Rashford on his way. Our no.10 drove into the box and played the ball across goal to find Antony sliding in to get the final touch and tap home.

Martial came close to doubling our lead minutes later, but the Frenchman’s effort flew just wide of Jordan Pickford’s goal.

A buoyant away end wouldn’t have to wait much longer to see their side equalise, as the Toffees hit back just ten minutes after our opener. Neal Maupay’s low delivery slipped through the legs of David de Gea, allowing an unmarked Conor Coady to tap in and level the score.

At 1-1, there was a frantic feel to the game with tackles flying in all over the pitch as both teams tried to carve out the next goal.

Ten Hag’s men came the closest to netting again moments after conceding, as Martial saw his attempt to restore our lead saved well by Pickford after Rashford drove us forward on the break. A handful of long-range efforts from Rashford and Christian Eriksen came agonisingly close to putting us ahead again, but we went into the break all-square.

As per the first half, the Reds were quick to hit the ground running in the second. Seven minutes after the restart, we were back in front courtesy of some magic from Rashford in front of the Stretford End.

After picking up the ball out wide, he drove into the box and showed lovely footwork to beat his defender before his drilled cross was turned into the Everton net by Toffees defender Coady.

After reinstating our one-goal lead, the Reds began to establish some dominance but second-half substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin had other ideas. Demarai Gray’s quality ball into the box was converted by Everton’s no.9 to make it 2-2, but the intervention from VAR chalked their equaliser off due to Gray being offside in the build-up.

Rashford came close to putting daylight between us and our opponents with a late free-kick, but Pickford helped it over the bar to deny his England team-mate. The two locked horns once more as our no.10 stepped up to take a penalty deep into stoppage time – won by Alejandro Garnacho – but this time it was Rashford who came out on top to put the game to bed from United’s perspective.

THE NATION

Former Italian soccer star Gianluca Vialli has died from cancer at the age of 58, his former soccer club Sampdoria said on Friday.

Vialli, who enjoyed a stellar career with Sampdoria, Juventus and Chelsea and earned 59 caps for Italy, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2017. He was given the all-clear a year later only for the illness to return.

“I know that I probably will not die of old age, I hope to live as long as possible, but I feel much more fragile than before,” Vialli said in a Netflix documentary aired in March 2022.

He described cancer as “a travel companion” that he hoped would eventually leave him in peace, after testing his mettle. “Illness can teach a lot about who you are, and can push you to go beyond the superficial way in which we live,” he said.

Vialli was however forced to step aside from his role as head of a delegation with the Italian national team last month, saying he needed to focus on overcoming a new phase of his disease.

Working with the Italy squad, Vialli had been reunited with national coach Roberto Mancini, a lifelong friend and strike partner when they both played for Sampdoria, where they were known as “the goal twins.”

Vialli and Mancini led the Italians to the Euro 2020 tournament in 2021, lifting the trophy in Wembley Stadium where, 29 years earlier, their Sampdoria team had lost the European Cup final to Barcelona.

They celebrated last year with a tearful embrace that “was more beautiful than the hugs we used to give each other when I passed him the ball and he scored goals,” Vialli said in a TV interview with Italy’s RAI in November.

THE NATION

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo said his “work is done” in Europe, adding that he is relishing new challenges both on and off the pitch after being unveiled as a player of Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr on Tuesday (January 3).

Ronaldo, who was a free agent following his acrimonious split with Manchester United in November, joined Al Nassr last week on a 2-1/2 year deal estimated by media to be worth more than 200 million euros ($210.94 million).

He was greeted by a sea of yellow and blue at Al Nassr’s home ground Mrsool Park, where thousands of fans turned up to witness his unveiling.

Ronaldo arrives in Saudi Arabia with a vast collection of club honours after a glittering spell at Spanish giants Real Madrid from 2009-18 where he won two LaLiga titles, two Spanish Cups, four Champions League titles and three Club World Cups.

He also claimed two Serie A titles and a Copa Italia trophy in three years at Juventus before rejoining United with whom he had bagged three Premier League crowns, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League and Club World Cup.

“I’m so proud to make this big decision in my life. In Europe, my work is done,” Ronaldo told a news conference.

“I won everything, I played in the most important clubs in Europe and now it’s a new challenge in Asia.”

The 37-year-old batted away questions about criticism of his move to Saudi Arabia, saying, “I’m a unique player as well so for me it’s normal.”

Al Nassr coach Rudi Garcia said the signing of Ronaldo was a huge step for the Saudi Arabian league.

“Cristiano is one of the best players in the world and in the history of football. He is a legend, it is an honor for sure for me but also for Al Nassr to welcome Cristiano,” Garcia told reporters.

Al Nassr president Mossali Al Muammar was also effusive in his praise of Ronaldo, calling him the “best player in football history.”
