Koh Phi Phi was the only destination selected in Thailand in a list recently published by Travel + Leisure magazine alongside other idyllic islands including Mauritius in Africa, Hainan Island in China, Cebu Islands in the Philippines, Crete in Greece and St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands.

The magazine chose the Phi Phi Islands thanks to the archipelago’s natural setting and easily accessible location just a short boat ride from Phuket.

The feature also recommended a range of activities, such as kayaking to scenic coves, rock climbing, and exploring Phi Phi Le National Park with a private boat charter.

Phuket International Airport has given travellers more room to lounge and added other facilities to cope with an anticipated surge over the Songkran holidays.

Airports of Thailand president Nitinai Sirismatthakarn said on Friday an additional 5,550 square metres had been opened in the concourse the day before.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has predicted that 393,900 travellers will use Phuket airport from April 11-17 – a rate of 56,300 per day, representing an increase of 16.8 per cent over Songkran 2017.

Nitinai said the passenger building on the north side of the airport was being renovated and was opening in stages.

On Thursday a 3,000-square-metre second-floor lobby opened, with extra toilet facilities.

On the first floor, 2,550 additional square metres will handle arrivals via the bus gate, and a third luggage conveyor was added, so passengers can collect their bags faster, Nitinai said.

Next month, he said, 350 more luggage check-in stations would be ready.

Nitinai said renovations would be complete by June, including more X-ray scanners to hasten departures.

AVIATION officials are confident of attracting more foreign airlines to the Thai market.

Darun Saengchai, director-general of the Department of Aviation, said that several airlines have expressed an interest to open routes from their home countries to Thailand as a result of discussions with 18 partners at the Routes Asia 2018 event in Australia from March 18-20.

Given high growth in the Asean region, Australia’s low-cost Jetstar Airways will study routes from Perth to Surat Thani and from Perth to Krabi with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner

“Jetstar has shown interested to fly to the Andaman coast along Krabi province. We also offer the Gulf of Thailand in Surat Thani province. The airline has been very interested in these options and has asked to study tourism information about the eastern seaboard,” Darun said.

Malaysia’s Malindo Air will open a new route from Kota Bharu to Surat Thani in June with ATR 75 aircraft. Now, the airline is in the process of requesting for a licence from the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT).

Malindo Air has been asked to consider to resuming a Penang-Krabi route, which it used to serve in 2014-2015. The increasing numbers of tourists in the area make this route more appealing now.

Thai AirAsia X has been eyeing a direct flight from Krabi to Incheon in South Korea. The airline has been asked to open a Hua Hin-Chiang Mai route to connect its Kuala Lumpur-Hua Hin route, which will begin service on May 18.

Thai VietJet Air plans to open a Bangkok-Krabi route on April 5 and has been asked to study a Chiang Rai-Phuket route due to passengers’ strong response.

Laos’ national airline is keen to use Khon Kaen Airport as its base and is in discussions with the airline’s partner in the province for joint investment and airline registration in Thailand.

TAC Co Ltd is interested to rent an area in Khon Kaen Airport to establish a school to train pilots due to the high demand for pilots, while airports in Roi Et and Phitsanulok have been contacted for this purpose.

Darun said that the department also held discussions with foreign airports, such as Vietnam’s Vandong Airport, for information exchange and marketing promotion activities.

In fiscal 2017, the department logged 140,423 commercial flights, with 18,265,830 passengers.

The Harbour Department will build a new pier near Phuket airport and open five ferry routes linking Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga, the department chief said on Thursday.

Jirut Wisaljit, director-general of the Harbour Department, said the new port and the “Andaman Ring Route” ferry service would reduce congestion at the Phuket airport and on roads in the three southern coastal provinces.

He said the three provinces are popular among foreign tourists and the port and ferry routes would help reduce congestion of tourists flying between Phuket and Krabi or driving between provinces.

The new pier near the Phuket International Airport would allow tourists to get off boats and take planes without having to use road transport, he said.

The first route will link Ao Por pier in Phuket to Chong Lad pier of the Koh Yao Yai in Phang Nga and to Tha Lane pier in Krabi.

The second route will link Chong Lad pier to Manoh Pier of Koh Yao Noi in Phang Nga.

The third route will link Ban Hua Hin pier in Tambon Koh Klang of Koh Lanta district of Krabi to Klong Mad pier in Tambon Koh Lanta Noi in Koh Lanta district.

For the fourth route, ferryboats will travel from Ao Thong Lang pier on Koh Lanta to Koh Jum in Krabi.

And the fifth route will link Koh Lanta Yai to Koh Por in Krabi, Jirut said.

He said there will also be a new speedboat service from Ao Por pier in Phuket to Laem Lan pier on Koh Yao Yai, Laem Dong beach of Koh Phi Phi, Ton Sai beach of Koh Phi Phi and Sala Dan pier of Koh Lanta in Krabi.

Jirut said the new boat services are expected to start within this year.
