US and Australian embassies get into the Songkran spirit

What’s onApr 13. 2021

By The NationThe United States and Australian embassies in Bangkok on Tuesday posted entertaining video clips to celebrate this year’s Songkran.

The US mission posted a fun, food-themed video titled “US Embassy Bangkok Spicy Food Challenge”.

Embassy staff are seen tucking in to six spicy Thai dishes – Nam Prik Noom (grilled green chilli dip), Phad Krapow Moo (stir-fried basil with minced pork), Mama Phad Khee Mao (spicy stir-fried drunken instant noodles), Gaeng Hed (fermented mushroom soup), Gaeng Tai Pla (fermented fish entrails curry) and Gaeng Leung (yellow curry with fish and papaya).

The munching diplomats comment in Thai on the food between mouthfuls, remarking on its tastiness (“aroy mak”) and also comparing the spicy flavours to the Tex-Mex cuisine of Arizona. However, as the spice level gets higher with each dish, some diners begin to struggle. “It’s worth eating for bilateral relations between the two countries,” one US diplomat splutters in Thai after taking a fiery mouthful of Gaeng Leung.

They sign off with a message for Thailand: “We hope you all have a fun, safe and delicious Thai New Year! Happy Songkran!”

Meanwhile, the Australian Embassy had fun with a virtual Songkran celebration posted on its Facebook page.

Ambassador Allan McKinnon appears in traditional Thai dress as a message board is virtually handed around to individual staff in a Zoom-style video. Each member chalks a Thai letter before the message is handed back to McKinnon, who is promptly soaked by water guns from all sides.

“This year we are celebrating Songkran virtually, with a bit of physical distancing. Our Embassy staff has a small message to everyone in Thailand and to our Thai friends in Australia. Wishing everyone a happy and safe Songkran!” the message read.

Airbnb has jumped on the bandwagon for International Women’s Day (March 8) by pointing out that 55 per cent of its hosts in Thailand are female. Chiang Mai is home to the highest proportion of women hosts in Thailand (60 per cent) – 9th in Airbnb’s rankings of global cities with the highest number of female hosts.

“In Thailand, our women Airbnb hosts are breaking down barriers and blazing new trails. They recognise Airbnb as a valuable platform that provides them with the opportunity to earn extra income. They see Airbnb as a way for them to become financially independent and a way to support their local communities and neighbourhoods,” said Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb general manager for India, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

To celebrate International Women’s Day in Thailand, Airbnb is launching two new experiences hosted by leading women chefs – Chef Gai (Thananya Kaikaew), owner of dessert cafe Brioche from heaven, and Chef Nooror (Nooror Somany Steppe), owner of Blue Elephant restaurant.

UNHCR holds exhibition to commemorate 70 years of protecting, helping refugees

Forced displacement of people globally has nearly doubled in the past decade, with nearly 80 million or one in every 100 people becoming refugees.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is marking its 70th anniversary with an exhibition at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) to recognise the support it has received from all sectors in Thailand and across the world.

The UNHCR was formally entrusted with its mandate on December 14, 1950, and since then, it has been working to protect people forced to flee, provide humanitarian assistance and solutions to millions worldwide. There are more than 17,000 people working for the UNHCR in 135 countries.

UNHCR was invited by the government in 1975 to commence operations in Thailand in response to the Indochina refugee crisis.

“This is not a moment for celebration as the continuous need for protection and humanitarian assistance highlights the tragic displacement situation in the world today,” said Giuseppe De Vincentiis, UNHCR representative in Thailand.

“However, this anniversary is an opportunity to recognise the dedication, courage, and contributions of those who continue to support, work and collaborate with UNHCR, including the Thai government, NGO partners, civil society, private sectors, media partners, donors and the people of Thailand.”

“It’s has been more than five years since I first went on a mission with UNHCR to report on the refugee crisis,” said Thapanee Eadsrichai, founder of The Reporters, which has raised awareness and funds to support UNHCR.

“As both a member of the media and a human being, I am proud to be able to make a difference to millions of lives regardless of race, religion or belief, which inspires me to keep doing good for society at the local and global level and provides me with a sense of fulfilment.”

The “UNHCR 70th Anniversary Exhibition” is open to the public until December 20 at BACC.

The exhibition will take visitors on a trip through UNHCR’s history, work and achievements over 70 years, refugee stories, core relief items provided during displacement situations, archive footage and stories of people forced to flee around the world. There will also be a daily activity, game and documentary screening supported by UNHCR goodwill ambassador Praya Lundberg, The Standard and National Geographic for participants to enjoy.

Building on last year’s success, Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok is bringing back the “Nutcracker” ballet weekend festive afternoon tea buffet.

On Saturdays and Sundays from 2pm to 5pm the hotel’s lobby will be transformed into a Christmas extravaganza with ballet dancers performing parts of the Tchaikovsky classic around a 7-metre-tall Christmas tree. There will also be a sumptuous festive spread paired with delectable hot beverages for diners to feast on.

The hotel’s Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin Restaurant is also offering a special dinner every Saturday this month accompanied by a rendition of “Swan Lake” and contemporary Thai dance. The eight-course meal will also be paired with carefully selected wines.

While ballet and culinary offerings may keep the adults happy, some of the younger guests may enjoy a visit from Santa at The Addition restaurant. He is there every Saturday, and will also appear on Christmas Eve.

Meanwhile, Christmas Eve will be marked with the singing of carols in the lobby from 6pm and guests can continue their celebration by either tucking into a festive buffet at ALATi or a special eight-course meal with wine at Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin.

In keeping with the festive season, ALATi will be serving a special Christmas Day brunch with all the trimmings and a “semi buffet à la minute” or sauces cooked to order served at the table.

Siam Kempinski will mark New Year’s Eve with a countdown and afterparty in its lobby. Before the countdown, diners can either opt for a buffet feast at the Niche restaurant, a 10-course dinner at the Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin or à la carte options at ALATi.

Since this is the season for giving, the hotel also offers hampers and other festive goodies at a counter in the lobby.

Seacon Square and Seacon Bangkae are holding “Shirakawako”, an event celebrating Shirakawago Village, a village more than 250 years old in Japan’s Gifu prefecture.

The village is a Unesco World Heritage Site, along with Takayama’s old town, which is known as the “land in the embrace of mountains”.

“Shirakawako” will be held at Seacon Square from November 20-29, at the Fountain Activity Zone furst floor, Seacon Square, Srinakarin, and from December 11-20 at the main atrium zone, first floor, Seacon Bangkae, Phetkasem Road.

The event is organised in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in Thailand to give visitors and the public an experience of winter through the simulation of winter atmosphere and the snow in Shirakawago Village. The village has an architectural style known as Gassho Tsukuri, a traditional Japanese style with palm trees. The roof slopes at an angle of 60 degrees, which looks like two hands paying obeisance. In addition, the event has replicated many interesting places to see, such as Takayama Old Town, known as the land in the embrace of mountains where the water pipes are so clean that koi fish live.

Visitors can also experience artificial snow in the middle of a shopping centre. In the open there is a special zone for playing with artificial snow to make a snowman every day, 45 minutes per round.

Plus there will be a mini-concert by Thai idol bands who will take turns for entertainment from Friday to Sunday, such as I-MI, SIXTER, Daisy Daisy, Aster, Wishdom and Shining Stars. A Sarubobo doll workshop will be held on Saturday and Sunday.

Seventy famous Japanese souvenirs will be on sale and food will be sold in the atmosphere of the famous Sanmachi Street shopping district, also known as Hida Takayama.

Focus shifts to Thai breeds in this year’s dog show

What’s onNov 06. 2020

By The Nation

IMPACT’s 19th International Dog Show this year focuses on the “Dogs of Thailand”. The four-day event, which runs until Sunday, features more than 200 exhibitors as well as dog shows and competitions.

Organisers expect more than 100,000 visitors, generating as much as Bt80 million in revenue.

Tiraya Thongkerd, senior project manager for IMPACT Exhibition Management, said this dog show is a collaboration with the Thai Pet Product Industries Association and the Kennel Association.

“This event was initially supposed to be held in July, but was delayed due to the Covid-19 crisis. Even though the overall situation has improved, every sector needs to take necessary precautions. With this in mind, we will strictly practice social distancing. The space in every booth will be allocated appropriately to accommodate visitors based on guidelines and regulations of the public health agencies to ensure the safety of customers and their dogs.”

This year’s show aims to highlight and promote local breeds, like the Thai Bangkaew, through special contests. Dog lovers are also encouraged to take their pooches out on a shopping spree for goods and services offered at huge discounts. Vets are also at hand to provide free health check-ups and consulting services.

The show offers other fun-filled activities, like a dog beauty contest, American Pitbull weight pulling championship, dog grooming competition as well as “Who is the Fastest?” “Woof! And Jump” and “Detective Doggie” contests. Visitors who register stand to win special prizes in the lucky draw, while celebrity dog lovers like Kae Chollada, Yo Yossawadee, Boom Yutthaphum and Moota will also be around mingling with the crowds.

The event is being held in Impact Exhibition Centre, Halls 9 and 10, from 10am to 8pm. Visit http://www.thailand-dogshow.com or Facebook.com/ThailandInternationalDogShow for more details.
