MyOne organises art show to raise sexual-health awareness

Jan 27. 2020
By The Nation

MyOne, the next-generation condoms, is making an official debut in Thailand at Warehouse 30 with an art exhibition featuring local Thai artists from February 14 to 16.

“Through the mission to make condom use as socially acceptable as toothpaste and as second a nature as wearing a seatbelt, MyOne strives to empower consumers by encouraging people to stand up and express their personal beliefs about sex, in addition to raising awareness on sexual health and protection against HIV/Aids/STIs and unwanted pregnancies,” a statement from the brand said.

“Our goal to enter the Thai market is not just to become another condom brand on the shelf but also to aspire to cultivate an inclusive community of open-minded individuals and in turn to de-stigmatise the perception of condoms within Thai communities,” said MK Goh, CEO of global condom maker Karex.

The exhibition next month will feature “unique masterpieces” from P7, Mauy and Riety, inspired by MyOne condoms. Admission is free.

Jan 23. 2020
By The Nation

Iconsiam, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, the Chinese Opera Association, the China Cultural Center, Citibank, and AirAsia is staging a grand Chinese New Year celebration “The ICONSIAM Eternal Prosperity Chinese New Year 2020”.

The event takes place from January 22-26.

The God of the Green Dragon from the Green Dragon Shrine, one the most respected temples in Guangdong province in China, has exclusively been relocated to Iconsiam for public worship for blessings and good fortune. In addition, the global tourist destination also offers lineups of spectacular performances, including exciting world-acclaimed acrobatic shows from Beijing, topped with duo dragon show and traditional lion dance that comprises four types of lions from the Chinese Opera Association, all complemented by the dazzling panoramic view of the Chao Phraya River.

To mark the Year of the Rat, the riverside celebration started with an auspicious drum show called “The Rhythm of the Golden Year of Rat”. The drum is believed to ward off bad luck and obstacles. Then the excitement hyped up with the roaring sound of firecrackers to welcome the dragons and lions to the scene. The troupe from The National Acrobat of the People’s Republic of China in Beijing also took the stage with awe-inspiring performances. This iconic troupe has won countless national and international awards. Celebrity actress and model Khemanit ‘Pancake’ Jamikorn also joined the blessing finale as the Drummer Angel to lead the lion troupe from four Chinese regions and the duo dragons.

Yupha Taweewattanakitborvorn, deputy permanent secretary for Culture, said: “Representing the Thai government, the Ministry of Culture is very pleased to celebrate the auspicious Chinese New Year with Thai people on the banks of Chao Phraya River. The ‘Iconsiam Eternal Prosperity Chinese New Year 2020’, has been completed with great collaboration between the government and the private sectors to present a phenomenal Chinese New Year celebration, which is a very significant culture and a tradition of the Chinese and Chinese-Thai descendants.

“The celebration also plays a crucial role in enhancing Thailand’s tourism, not only to the Chinese but also visitors from across the globe who visit our country during the Chinese New Year holidays. The longstanding relations between China and Thailand could be traced back to the reign of King Taksin the Great. For generations, trade has paved the way for the rich exchange of culture, traditions and beliefs. Thonburi has been a key historic area where two cultures merged. Klongsan, Tha Din Deang and the Kudeejeen community are the areas dense with Chinese populations.”

Iconsiam also has invited celebrated Thai fortune-teller master Katha Chinabunchorn to mark “The Year of The Rat” with prosperity and good fortune. He travelled to Guangdong province in China for a special ceremony to invite the God of the Green Dragon from the Green Dragon Shrine to Bangkok, to bless Thais and tourists with luck and fortune. Visitors can obtain Chinese talisman said to ward off bad luck and bring auspiciousness, distributed free of charge at 500 pieces per day, five times a day at 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm and 7pm.

Over 10 exciting acrobatic performances from The National Acrobat of the People’s Republic of China in Beijing are open to the public like hoops, black and white fantasy, ball catching, swing high crutches and the 9th Wave. Plus a grand performance of Duo dragons and lion dances that combines traditional lions from four regions — Guangdong, Beijing, Hakka and Hainan. Admission is free.

Jan 14. 2020
By The Nation

Rugby fans in Bangkok and all over Southeast Asia are reminded that it’s almost time for the Bangkok International Rugby Tens. This year, the 15th edition of the Rugby Tens tournament is taking place on February 29 and March 1 at the Sports Complex of Bangkok Patana School which will once again play host to rugby teams and fans from all around the world.

The event is organised annually to raise funds for Nak Suu, a charity organisation established by Eddie Evans, former Canadian rugby international and chairman of the Bangkok Rugby Tens. The charity helps underprivileged children in the slums of Bangkok. Children in these areas are prone to substance abuse, prostitution and suffering from poverty. Funds raised will help these children by creating a supportive environment through team sport and activities as well as providing guidance and care. To support this, all proceeds from the tournament will go directly to Nak Suu, which will ensure this valuable work can continue.

As testament to its popularity, the Rugby Tens is once again booked out with many teams on the waiting list. Visitors can expect the 2020 tournament to be another exciting weekend full of fast-paced rugby, food stalls offering great cuisines, kids’ zone with supervised activities, plenty of socialising and of course the legendary after-parties.

Each year, the event attracts around 100 teams from around the world competing in the men’s open division, vets’, women’s, youth rugby as well as touch rugby. Youth games take place in the morning and adult games in the afternoon. 24 men’s open teams, 12 women’s teams, 10 vets teams, 42 youth teams and 10 touch rugby teams have already confirmed their attendance as well as 24 referees. This year’s participants include teams from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, France, Papua New Guinea, The UK, India, Sri Lanka, Japan, China, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Burma, Indonesia, Singapore and, of course, our host country Thailand.

The entire event will be streamed live all over the world with live English commentary.

“In 2019 we welcomed about 3500 spectators and 1500 players and are expecting bigger numbers this year. Our reputation as a premium fun Rugby tournament keeps on growing and growing to attract more participants and supporters. “Our goal is to offer something for everyone, the players, the fans, families and youngsters, basically a great weekend out for all” said Evans.

“I would also like to extend a massive thanks to our generous sponsors, some of whom have been working with us for several years ,” he said. “The young children we support through our Nak Suu programme are benefiting and we can see we are really making a difference in their lives and future. This would not have been possible without the support from Four Points By Sheraton Bangkok Sukhumvit 15, Radisson Blu, Dream Hotel, Blue Horizon, Thai Beverage, Bumrungrad Hospital, Spirit of Bangkok, United Relocations, Prostar, Bangkok Patana School, KIS International School, X-treme Sports Gear and our PR partner, Midas PR Group”.

Leisure meets luxury at Thailand Yacht Show

Jan 04. 2020

The fifth edition of the Thailand Yacht Show is set to take place at Royal Phuket Marina from January 9-12 during the island’s peak visitor season.

Targeting yachting aficionados and wealthy lifestyle enthusiasts from all over the region, the Thailand Yacht Show is a key marketing platform and revenue generator for the local industry, as well as positioning Thailand as the primary Asian destination in the global yachting arena.

The yacht show turns the marina into a bustling hub for all things luxury, highlighting Phuket as Asia’s premier cruising destination and a maritime haven for leisure boating enthusiasts.

The on-water display is a first-class array of luxury yacht models, including several premieres, from the region’s leading brokers and the world’s biggest boat builders.

The exhibitor line-up includes all the best-known brands, charter agencies, high-end property developers and leading names in the automotive, hospitality and food and beverage industries. A healthy mix of high-net-worth buyers, sellers and aspiring yacht owners with an appetite to spend will be there to meet them.

TYS will once again attract the leading names in the marine and luxury lifestyle industries. Speaking of their in-water display, Richard Allen, general manager of Simpson Marine, says “We are very pleased with our confirmed line-up at the 2020 Thailand Yacht Show. We will present six yachts, including at least three Asia premieres, which is a great achievement and a showcase of Simpson Marine’s rich portfolio of the world’s leading brands.

“There will be something for everyone with models from San Lorenzo, Monte Carlo Yachts, Fairline Yachts, Benneteau, Lagoon Catamarans, and Aquila Power Catamarans. In addition, we will be promoting our own services with great offers on Yacht Charter both in Thailand and the rest of the world.

“Our Yacht Care Team will have packages for yacht owners seeking care-free ownership and we will also be offering advice on yacht registration as Simpson Marine is an authorised agent for the Langkawi Yacht Registry.

“As in every year, the show is a great chance to meet new and existing owners and yachting enthusiasts from Thailand and abroad. I look forward to seeing everyone there.”

Leading superyacht broker and Ferretti dealer Lee Marine will be displaying Asia Premières from Custom Line, Riva and Riviera, as well as two large yachts under the Northrop & Johnson flag.

CEO Joshua Lee commented: “We are continuing to support the Thailand Yacht Show as it is the main platform for our industry here. We also believe the show organisers’ efforts to open Thailand to foreign superyacht tourism will one day be rewarded, and we will all benefit hugely from that — most of all Thailand!”

Boat Lagoon Yachting will showcase a Thailand premiere, the Princess Y85, a special edition from a collaboration between Pinnafarina and Princess design studio, with the latest in technology and advanced build-quality Princess is known for, as well as another new special edition, the Princess F62.

The company is also the distributor of the ocean-going luxury, RIBS from Sacs Marine, and will be presenting a Sacs Rebel 47, flagship of the Sacs range, a stylish and luxurious 15m RIB on the market. Completing their front-row line-up is the Jeanneau Cap Camarat10.5Wa – another Thailand premiere.

One of Thailand’s major dealers of ever-more popular sailing and power catamarans, Multihull Solutions, will present Asian and world premieres from NEEL Trimarans and Asia Catamarans respectively.

Looking forward to the 5th edition of TYS is general manager Andrew de Bruin: “We have some terrific boats at TYS this year, and we’re finding the market demand for our speciality catamarans keeps on growing. We’ve always had good results from this show, and it’s really important that everyone continues to support — one day it will grow into something really special for the region.”

First time exhibitor at TYS 2020 is Asia Yachting, the fast-growing and highly successful dealer of Monte Carlo Yachts and Prestige Yachts from Hong Kong, now with an extended territory including Thailand and Singapore.

CEO Olivier Besson is enthusiastic about the opportunities in the region that the Thailand and Singapore Yacht Shows present: “We are excited to be opening a new office in Phuket, which will enable us to focus on sales in Southeast Asia, where we expect the market to grow considerably over the next few years. We are aware of all the efforts that TYS and SYS show organisers Verventia have been putting into developing the industry here, and we are delighted to support that effort — and hopefully make a few sales!”

Lovers of all things Italian will rejoice as famed boat builder Azimut Yachts will display two brand-new models, and another highly successful British Brand Sunseeker will also have a front-line showpiece yacht to demonstrate the ultimate in high-fashion luxury boating.

Visitors to the Thailand Yacht Show 2020 will find a whole host of new features, including interactive demonstrations, special Children’s Day events, art exhibitions and an artistic masterclass, live music, fashion shows and a veritable smorgasbord of food and beverage options – including a brand new Floating Bar in the heart of the marina.

The Show’s main draw is the world-class selection of yachts and boats of all shapes and sizes — from small sailboats to superyachts, RIB’s to jet-skis, navigation systems and chandlery to the latest water-sports toys — for visitors to admire and buy.

The Thailand Yacht Show is an immersive experience, offering the opportunity for first-timers to actually participate in the excitement of sailing a yacht from the Demonstration Platform.

The private island of Koh Rang Noi, only a short tender ride from the main exhibition, is the venue for the welcome party on January 9, and will once again be the backdrop of the Superyacht Hub, showcasing a selection of international superyachts at anchor.

CEO of event organiser Verventia, Andy Treadwell, is optimistic about the future for Phuket as a hub for high-spending yacht tourism and the yachting industry in Asia:

“Phuket is now recognised as the centre of one of the most beautiful yachting destinations in the world – the Asean seas rank alongside the Mediterranean and the Caribbean holiday cruising grounds. This should rightfully be the principal hub for boating and yacht tourism in Asia, known not just for its superb landscapes and seascapes, its tropical islands, clear waters and coral reefs, but also for its world class facilities, marinas, hospitality and service,” he says.

“A successful Thailand Yacht Show is important to the local boating fraternity as an ongoing link between brands, dealers, brokers, and local service providers to new industry contacts and new buyers — so we need support from all stakeholders. By joining together in a cohesive industry gathering, we can build an ever-growing show, delivering real results in a burgeoning marketplace that we should be driving ourselves.”

The Thailand Yacht Show is Thailand’s premier experiential yachting event, conceived and supported by the Thai government with a view to promoting the country as the yachting and marina hub for Asia and attracting foreign yacht tourism. Held annually in Phuket, on the shores of the beautiful Phang Nga Bay, the show enables visitors to experience all aspects of the yachting lifestyle in one of the world’s most beautiful yachting destinations.
