The second round of the Blancpain GT Series Asia took place at the Buriram International Circuit in Thailand this past weekend with Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik piloting his Porsche 911 GT3 R alongside Shae Davies, an Australian racing driver with Craft Bamboo Racing Team, the race would be Sandy’s second home event in this series.

Friday was the free practice day where Sandy got his first feel of the Porsche on the Buriram circuit. Together with Shae Davies and Craft Bamboo Racing, the #911 car got adjusted for the Saturday qualifying sessions.

Saturday morning consisted of two hectic qualifying sessions of fifteen minutes each, which saw Sandy driving in Q1. The Thai driver gave his best, but could only achieve 14th place overall. Shae took the wheel in Q2 and he too placed the car in 14th position for Race 2.

“It was a difficult session trying to get the best out of the Porsche, we are still lacking a lot of power in this heat and have tried to compensate for this, but unfortunately we have to accept that this is our position and we will do our best to regain some positions in the race.” Sandy said after the session.

Sandy took the start for Race 1 and after a decent start the Thai driver started moving up the order, benefiting from some crashes between cars ahead. Sandy handed over to Shae who drove brilliantly to maintain in contention for points, but sadly had to concede to the much faster Audi cars behind. The Thai-Australian duo finished the race just outside the points in 11th place.

Shae Davies lined up on the grid for Sunday’s race in 14th place and after a good start he managed to maintain his position against the fast group of cars around him. The Australian handed over to Sandy at the start of the pitstop window. The Thai driver then began picking off positions and making his way up the order. After a hard fought race the #911 Porsche found themselves in 8th position and collected 4 points.

Sandy said “I’m happy we were able to score points today but I was hoping to get on the podium in front of the Thai fans. This was the best we could’ve done today and I’m glad with the progress we’ve made within the team. Moreover, I would like to thank the thousands of Thai fans that came to cheer, it was a pleasure to see and take pictures with many of you. I hope to see you all at a racing circuit soon!”

Toyota Gazoo Racing Team Thailand managed to cross the finish line despite bad weather condition in the  ADAC Zurich 24H Race Nurburgring in Germany on Sunday.

Driving SP3 Corolla Altis No 123, Sutthipong Samittachartch, Nattavude Charoensukh-awatana, Nattapong Horthongkum, Manat Kulapalanont finished 11th in the Super Production 3 and 126th in the overall after undergoing through rains and thick mists on slippery tracks.

“This is a very challenging race that tested the mental toughness of the drivers. Driving at night was already tough, but driving at night under the rain made it even worse as it brought heavy fogs that caused blurry vision,” explained team manager Sutthipong.

‘Our car had to go through fluctuating weather conditions with a lot of water on the tracks that caused several accidents to other cares. We already tried our best to pull it off under difficult moments. I have to thank everyone in the team to keep fighting no matter what,” he added.

Kiradech closer to PGA Tour card after final day drama on hole 17th

Florida –  Thai star Kiradech Aphibarnrat was kicking himself hard at THE PLAYERS Championship on Sunday.

Through 16 holes, the 28-year-old bolted up the leaderboard with an eagle and six birdies at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, charging into the top-five in the PGA TOUR’s flagship tournament after starting the final round in T55 position.

Although the leaders had yet to begin their rounds, staying on the first page of the leaderboard would have edged him closer towards a PGA TOUR card. All he needed to do was to safely negotiate the tricky par-3, 17th hole, which got him on Saturday with a double bogey.

In full flight and with thoughts of matching the course record of nine-under 63 flashing through his mind, the Thai remained aggressive when he stepped on the 17th tee but he paid dearly with two misjudged strikes which found water that surrounds the island green, leading to a quadruple bogey seven which saw him sign for a five-under 67 and settling for T30 position on eight-under 280 total.

Although the long-hitting Kiradech birdied his closing hole, the blow up on 17 left him seething.

“I don’t want to talk about it. 17 is  … I shoot like 6-over this week, which is the last two days. That two balls in the water, that got the PGA TOUR card away from me and it’s just a pain,” said a despondent Kiradech.

“It’s such a good start, everything was rolling like the way I want it to. I think I got my A game out starting early, and it kept going all day. There wasn’t a missed shot. I think the one bad shot was on the third hole when I pulled my 7-iron a little bit too long, but I got up-and-down for par.”

Kiradech explained he was in between clubs standing on the 17th tee box.

“I had 126 (yards) to clear the water and 31 to the flag. I hit my wedge, like full wedge I can carry like 125, 127, that’s the maximum. And I believe it’s downwind from the right. So I tried to hit it as hard as I can but I missed it. I mishit it and it went about two yards short. I decided not to go to the drop area because I feel like it’s so grainy and tight (lie) there, so I hit it from the tee again with another wedge but I tried to hit it soft and mishit it again (into water),” said Kiradech.

He picked up 26.87 FedExCup points, raising his season tally to 290 points as a non-member to secure his Special Temporary Membership which now allows him to accept unlimited sponsor exemptions for the remainder of the 2017-18 PGA TOUR Season. Kiradech then needs to surpass the top-125 at the end of the season, which is anticipated to be around 365 points, to earn his PGA TOUR card for 2018-19.

“I know that I’m learning from playing on tougher golf courses, but the 17th hole is just one good shot and you can walk away with a two, it’s just a short par-3. But I think I was a little bit too aggressive and when you’re playing under pressure and, at one point of the game I was looking at the course record as well. I was like eight-under and I didn’t get birdie on 16, I don’t know, it just popped up in my mind, but it’s not a big deal,” he said.

Kiradech finished 10 shots behind winner Webb Simpson who won his first PLAYERS title by four shots after closing with a 73.

Antonio Conte claims Chelsea have no chance of an FA Cup final victory over Manchester United unless they improve quickly after questioning the desire of his players.

The Italian has demanded a vast improvement after a 3-0 defeat at Newcastle on Sunday ended a disappointing Premier League season which has seen last year’s title winners fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Conte’s side have a chance to atone for a below-par fifth-place finish — which condemned them to a place in next season’s Europa League — when they face United at Wembley on May 19.

In what is widely expected to be Conte’s last game in charge as Chelsea come up against former manager Jose Mourinho, the 48-year-old acknowledged his side need to up their levels in all departments to have any hope of clinching the trophy for the first time since 2012.

“We wanted to end the season in the best possible way, but we can do better than this,” he said.

“For that, I’m the first to answer for this bad game. Newcastle showed greater desire and fight, and if we play like this in the FA Cup final we don’t have a chance.

“We have six days to change our approach, our desire, our will to fight because we can do much better.”

Conte contradicted reports the Cup final will bring the curtain down on his two-year reign.

He has 12 months left on his current contract, and when questioned about his future, the former Italy coach added: “I have a contract, I’m committed and the club know very well the situation.

“Will Saturday be my last match? No, I don’t think it will be. The most important thing is the club, not speculation about me.”

– Benitez set for talks –

Chelsea needed a victory at Newcastle to have any chance of fulfilling their slim hopes of a top four finish, but they were well below par and ended with 23 fewer points than their title-winning campaign 12 months ago.

“To finish fifth is a big disappointment. How damaging is it not to be in the Champions League? You’ll have to ask the club about that,” Conte added.

Newcastle sealed an impressive 10th place finish on their return to the top-flight thanks to two second-half goals from Ayoze Perez after Dwight Gayle opened the scoring before the interval.

Question marks also remain over the future of Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez, who is set for key talks with the club’s owner Mike Ashley in the next week to discuss his potential summer transfer budget as he looks to build on an encouraging campaign.

“That reception I received from our supporters at the end our supporters makes me really proud,” admitted Benitez, who was serenaded by 50,000 fans at the final whistle demanding he remains in charge.

The Champions League-winning former Liverpool manager ranks his achievement in guiding Newcastle to a top half finish among the highlights of his glittering coaching career.

With a year remaining on his contract, Benitez added: “Maybe this achievement could be close to the top trophies that I’ve won.

“If we want to achieve something, then we have to understand what we need to achieve that. We have to sit down talk and see where we are.

“We have to be sure we do the right things. The fans have ambitions, we have ambitions and we need to know if everyone has the same feeling.

“We’re still talking and we will see what happens.”

Zverev powers past Thiem to win Madrid Masters

Dominic Thiem lost to Alexander Zverev in the Madrid Masters final on Sunday and then said the German is now the best player in the world beneath Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Zverev has long been marked out as a future star of the men’s game and his 6-4, 6-4 victory over Thiem suggests the German can be a major threat at the French Open later this month.

Thiem had ousted Nadal in the quarter-finals on Friday and he too will be among the small group capable of preventing the Spaniard from claiming an 11th Roland Garros crown.

But the Austrian was outplayed, and over-powered, by Zverev, who collects his third ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title, the most prestigious tier of knock-out tournament beneath the four Grand Slams.

Zverev is now one of five active players to have won three, the others being Federer, Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

Those four are all aged 30 or older, while Zverev is 21, with Djokovic and Murray both attempting recovery missions after injury.

“I would say probably now, besides Roger and Rafa, he’s the best,” Thiem said. “You just need to look at his results.”

Ranked third in the world, Zverev is yet to transfer his talent and success in Masters events to Grand Slams, however, where his best result remains reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon last year.

On this evidence, that breakthrough is surely close, with the crowd on Manolo Santana court treated to an impressive display of aggressive baseline hitting. Thiem’s 21 errors to Zverev’s 12 were also key.

“Rafa is the favourite, no matter where he plays, on a clay court,” Zverev said. “He’s going to be the favourite in Rome, he’s going to be the favourite in Paris. He’s still the guy to beat.”

The players in Madrid this week have remarked on the quickness of the courts and that has suited Zverev, whose demon serve was almost untouchable in the opening set.

After conceding an early break for 2-0, Thiem’s only sniff came at 5-4 when he opened up 0-30 on the Zverev serve. But his opponent did not waver, letting out a roar of relief after clinching the frame.

Another break in the first game of the second meant Thiem was again playing catch-up and Zverev could have moved 3-0 clear had Thiem not saved two more break points.

Instead, Thiem stayed in touch to make Zverev serve out. A sumptuous half-volley opened up two match points and Zverev took the first when a final Thiem forehand floated long.

“It’s a great feeling,” Zverev said. “Hopefully this will not be my last, hopefully I can continue to improve, and win a few more.”

Former US Open champion Webb Simpson finished a four-stroke, wire-to-wire triumph at the Players Championship on Sunday to end a four-year victory drought.

A double-bogey at the final hole was just a blip for the 32-year-old Simpson, who signed for a final-round 73 and an 18-under par total of 270 at TPC Sawgrass.

The North Carolina native was never headed since sharing the lead on day one and then storming five shots clear of his rivals on day two in shooting a course record-equalling 63.

He took a tournament-record seven-shot lead into the final round — and marched to the victory as would-be challengers including Tiger Woods fell by the wayside.

South African Charl Schwartzel (6Y) and the American duo of Jimmy Walker (67) and Xander Schauffele (67) – shared second place on 14-under par.

Woods’s storming run of six birdies in his first 12 holes saw him move into a tie for second. But a double-bogey five at the 17th saw him settle for a 69 and a share of 11th on 11-under par.

Fellow American Justin Thomas was also tied for 11th — good enough to seize the world number one ranking from Dustin Johnson who had held it for 64 weeks.

Varanyu completes wire-to-wire victory in Phuket

Phuket – Thailand’s Varanyu Rattanaphiboonkij savoured his first professional victory in front of his family after closing with an even-par 70 to win by six shots in the final round of the Singha Laguna Phuket Open on Sunday.

The 21-year-old Thai displayed great form all week as he traded two birdies against as many bogeys on Sunday to secure his wire-to-wire Asian Development Tour (ADT) victory on 18-under-par 262 total at Laguna Golf Phuket.

Compatriot Pawin Ingkhapradit returned with an impressive 66, but he was unable to overhaul Varanyu’s lead. He took second-place on his own at the ฿2 million (approx. US$64,000) event co-sanctioned by the ADT and the All Thailand Golf Tour.

South African Mathiam Keyser signed for a 69 to take third place, marking his best finish on the ADT this season. Nitithorn Thippong of Thailand, who started the final round in second, struggled with nerves and dropped two places after carding a 71 while Sweden’s Oscar Zetterwall (67) and Thailand’s Worrasorn Suwanpanang (68) share fifth place on 272 at the Tour’s eighth leg of the season.

Playing in the final group for the first time in his professional career, Varanyu was surprised by his father and sister who flew down from his hometown of Phetchaburi, Thailand, to watch him play.

“It feels like a dream! I have worked so hard all year and to finally get a win and in Thailand is amazing. My mother has been following me all four days and I didn’t know my father was going to come. It makes me so happy that they got to see my first win,” said Varanyu who also had his brother on his bag this week.

Varanyu dropped a shot on the first hole but would soon recover with a birdie on hole three. He maintained a steady momentum with nine pars, before dropping another shot on hole 13 due to an errant drive. He would finish out his last five holes with a birdie on 14 when he made an up-and-down from 15 yards followed by four more pars.

“After I made bogey on hole one, my brother just told me to stay calm and not speed up my tempo. I was nervous but having my whole family there to support me helped. He would distract me from the scores and I just stuck to the game plan of playing like I did the past three days,” added Varanyu.

Sticking to his tee-to-fairway-to-green game plan, Pawin fired four birdies in a bogey-free round to match his low round one score.

“The highlight of today’s round would have to be hole 16 when I missed the green to the left and chipped-in for birdie from 15-yards. I hit everything well today and my tempo was good. I am pretty happy with my second-place finish especially since I played all four rounds under par this week. I felt like I was really focused on my game plan and not thinking about other people today.” said the 26-year-old Pawin.

After this win, Varanyu took up membership on the ADT and is currently 10th on the merit rankings. He took home a winner’s prize purse of US$9,450 and six Official World Golf Ranking points while the top-six players and ties earned points on a sliding scale.

The leading five players on the ADT Order of Merit at the end of the season will earn playing rights on the premier Asian Tour for the 2019 season.

Ends.

Leading round four scores:

262 – Varanyu RATTANAPHIBOONKIJ (THA) 62 61 69 70

268 – Pawin INGKHAPRADIT (THA) 66 69 67 66

270 – Mathiam KEYSER (RSA) 66 67 68 69

271 – Nitithorn THIPPONG (THA) 64 66 70 71

272 – Oscar ZETTERWALL (SWE) 64 67 74 67, Worrasorn SUWANPANANG (THA) 68 67 69 68

273 – Tawan PHONGPHUN (THA) 68 69 70 66, John Michael O’TOOLE (USA) 65 71 69 68

Florida – For the third straight day, Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand shot a one-under 71 at THE PLAYERS Championship.

But this one stung him on Saturday.

Three under for his third round through 16 holes, the 28-year-old splashed his tee shot into the water at the iconic par -3, 17th hole at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, leading to a double bogey five which spoilt his day.

With a three-day total of three-under 213, Kiradech remained at the wrong end of the leaderboard at T55 in the PGA TOUR’s flagship tournament.

71 again, very consistent golf,” said a disappointed Kiradech. “I think I’m almost there, hitting the ball better. I was three under before reaching 17 and hit a poor shot there. Ended up with one under.”

Kiradech knew he had missed an opportunity to move up the board and heard the roars two groups ahead as 14-time major winner Tiger Woods charged from T68 to T9 following a superb 65 which provided the early fireworks at TPC Sawgrass.

American Webb Simpson, a four-time PGA TOUR winner, will take a seven-shot lead over Danny Lee of New Zealand into the final day after a third round 68 saw him match the 54-hole tournament record of 19-under 197.

Kiradech hopes to wrap up his second appearance at THE PLAYERS on a strong note to boost his hopes of earning a PGA TOUR card for next season.

“Feel better with how I struck the ball but disappointed I didn’t take advantage playing in the morning. I should have taken advantage with a low number. First nine, the wind was calm and I didn’t take advantage and on back nine, I messed up. Every part of my game is not sharp enough, not hitting it close enough,” said Kiradech, who has recorded two top-fives in the World Golf Championships this season.

“Tiger took all the birdies. I saw him shooting eight under after 12 s holes. My goal was to try to keep up with him but he played such good golf. Quite a disappointing day for me really. I’ve been trying hard. I also hit it into the water on 16 which I made a good par save and then found water again on 17. I’ve been trying so hard this week, and will try to go low tomorrow.”

Kiradech needs to earn six more FedExCup points to earn a Special Temporary Membership on the PGA TOUR which will then allow him to accept unlimited sponsor exemptions for the remainder of the season. He will then need to finish inside the top-125 of the FedExCup points standing to earn his PGA TOUR card for 2018-19.

Liverpool and Real fans in for Kiev hotel price shock

Fancy shelling out 3,500 euros ($4,200) for a night in a budget hotel?

Liverpool and Real Madrid fans who do not may end up sleeping rough for the night when they come to Kiev for the Champions League final.

The Ukrainian capital is the focus of fan fury after its hotels began charging 100 times their standard rates for the big match on May 26.

And some supporters lucky enough to book their beds before they turned into luxury items were aghast to discover their reservations annulled.

The Liverpool FC supporters club even posted a “rough” guide on Facebook that included overnight stays in the Polish city of Wroclaw.

The trek back out of Kiev was set for 3:00 am.

The European football governing body UEFA issued a diplomatic statement to AFP agreeing it might be wisest to just pop in and out of town on match day.

“It is expected that the preferred option for the majority of travelling fans will be charter flights arriving and leaving on the same day,” UEFA said.

The rates some of the city’s more modest places are charging sometimes look like a misprint.

A hotel called Harmony on Andriyivskiy Descent offers a room with a double bed and a miniature TV set balanced on a windowsill for 3,534 euros.

Another two euros gets you a breakfast.

A person at reception asked AFP to write a formal letter to management when asked why the price had been revised up for that one day from the usual 29 euros.

Fans who thought they were being clever by booking long in advance also had trouble getting answers after discovering they had no places to stay.

“Booked my hotel for Kiev months ago,” a Liverpudlian named Stephen wrote on Twitter.

“Now @bookingcom decided that they are gonna cancel it for me free of charge so I can re-book it for 15 grand!”

A spokesperson for Booking.com said all of the site’s prices were set by the hotels and that it was ready to defend the interests of clients who had their reservations tossed out.

– Virus attack –

The Spanish sport daily Marca published accounts of similar horror stories befalling Real fans.

One received a message from his hotel asking him to cancel his reservation “because we will not have electricity and water for the dates indicated”.

Another place said “a virus attack” was responsible for a cheap room being offered when in fact there were none.

Kiev city authorities have responded by assigning the problem to the state anti-monopoly committee.

The committee said on Tuesday that it had started “to monitor prices on the hotel services market”.

It has not been heard from since.

All of which prompted kind Ukrainian souls to start a Facebook page offering free couches to desperate lovers of the beautiful game.

It had nearly five thousands members by Saturday and a big writeup in the Liverpool Echo newspaper.

Page creator Victor Kylymar told the paper that he was not really into football but felt an “obligation” to help people out.

“This is a common event for all of Europe and to use this to make money is not the best idea,” Kylymar said.
