Loewe captures the flamboyance of the Balearic Islands with its new Paula’s Ibiza collection, evolving creative director Jonathan Anderson’s graphic use of texture and print by mixing and matching retro beach motifs with the Plumetis, Flags, Mermaids, Circus, and Birds prints.

The end result is a whimsical mix of polka dots, beach flags, mermaids, circus characters, and cartoon hummingbirds in vivid, multi-coloured combinations. Multiple prints clash in single garments, as tiered sun dresses, caftans, peasant blouses and patchwork denim meet fringed shorts, cotton pyjama separates, and terry towel ponchos or hoodies. Bucket hats, beach towels, pareos and silk scarves allow for artful layering on the go.

Sculpted simplicity: Givenchy designs Markle’s wedding dress

Meghan Markle wore a boat-necked, sculpted white dress for her wedding to Prince Harry on Saturday, designed by Clare Waight Keller for French fashion house Givenchy.

Here are some of the key details of the dress and accessories seen at the wedding:

Designer

Clare Waight Keller is a British designer who last year became the first female artistic designer of Givenchy, but has also worked for fashion houses Pringle of Scotland and Chloe.

She met Markle earlier this year and the pair worked closely together on a design that Kensington Palace said “epitomises a timeless minimal elegance”.

The dress

The open bateau neckline frames Markle’s shoulders and emphasises the slender sculpted waist of the dress.

The shape is achieved using just six seams, and the dress flows towards a train at the back, cushioned by an underskirt of triple silk organza.

The sleeves are slim and three-quarter length.

It is made of a pure white double bonded silk cady — a thick fabric — which has a soft matt lustre.

The veil

Made of silk tulle with a trim of hand-embroidered flowers in silk threads and organza, the veil is five metres long and had to be held by two pageboys as Markle arrived.

It depicts the distinctive flora of each country in the Commonwealth, the 53-nation grouping for which Harry is an ambassador.

The embroidery took hundreds of hours to complete, with workers washing their hands every 30 minutes to keep the tulle and the threads pristine.

The veil also featured two flowers that are Markle’s personal favourites.

These are Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox), which grows in the grounds of Kensington Palace where the couple will live, and the California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica), the state flower from Markle’s home state.

Tiara

Markle’s veil was held in place by Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara, which was loaned to her by Queen Elizabeth II.

Made in 1932, it comprises 11 sections, with a detachable centre of ten diamonds that can be worn as a brooch.

Markle also wore earrings and a bracelet by Cartier.

Shoes

Markle wore Givenchy shoes in a silk duchess satin.

Flowers

A bespoke bouquet by florist Philippa Craddock was personalised by several flowers handpicked by Prince Harry on Friday from his private garden at Kensington Palace.

Among the flowers are forget-me-nots, which were a favourite of Harry’s late mother, Diana, as well as scented sweet peas, lily of the valley, astilbe, jasmine and astrantia, and myrtle.

Bridesmaids, page boys

Waight Keller designed the six bridesmaids’ ivory silk high-waisted dresses with puff sleeves and pleated skirts, hand finished with a silk ribbon tied at the back with a bow.

Their leather shoes were monogrammed with each bridesmaids’ initials and the wedding date.

The four pages wore a miniature version of the Blues and Royals frockcoats worn by Prince Harry and his brother and best man Prince William.

Fashion house Poem joins with the luxury carmaker’s agent in Thailand for its newest collection

A subtle deep shade of blue captured the hourglass shape of Poem’s newest collection, which was revealed recently by the label’s creative director, Chavanon Caisiri in a lavish affair hosted by Amorn Prestige ltd, the official agent of BMW in Thailand

Chavanon says the collection is more elegant and minimal than the brand’s usual offerings, telling the press that he added more modernity to the creations.

“We are particularly proud of the dress which closed out the show, which emphasises structure and our perspective in collaborating with BMW, he said.

The recent event also introduced Amorn Prestige’s first complete BMW after-sales service outlet on Soi Ratchada 42. Spread over 1,171 square metres, the outlet offers complete service from professional team and authentic replacement parts guaranteed by BMW.

The fashion show, also titled “Deeper Shade of Blue”, featured 10 looks, eight of them for women and two for men, with the designs based on BMW’s trademark blue.

The dresses boasted an hourglass shape and the brand’s signature corset technique and came in a geometric print that enhanced a lady’s curves. Polyester was the fabric of choice, with a hint of luxury coming from velvet. The men suits were superbly designed and made with a special technique to look sophisticated for eveningwear. The jackets were a one-button tux with collars and pockets trimmed with glossy satin fabric and worn with an elegant shirt and bow tie.

A new service turns a precious organic memento of a loved one into fine jewellery

Passing on valuables like jewellery, a watch or a locket containing a photo of loved ones down through the generations is common practice is almost all families.

Now local brand Gemories founded by Passorn Passornsiri is adding a new take to the custom by transforming meaningful and precious organic objects into gemstones.

The process, she explains, combines a scientific procedure with virtual reality technology. This can produce gemstones rapidly while retaining the identity of the person – or even a beloved pet –through the colour, format, and size of the gem.

“We see jewellery as the accessory that’s placed most closely to a person. That gave us the idea of making the accessories we wear more precious,” Passorn explains.

“We did a lot of research into the subject and came up with the notion of turning memories, often organic matter, into a concrete object, because memories are most precious thing we have. From there, we looked into the technology that can create memories in the format of jewellery. And we found a technology that has been accepted globally –a gemstone with a specific background story.

The records of memory are transmitted in the form of a fine gemstone and marble glass generated from the fusion of mass and glass fibre at high temperature. This brings limpidity and a sparkling effect to the item in question and gives it a pure and beautiful colour. Organic matter that can be transformed into a gemstone include relics, hair, umbilical cord and the milk tooth of a child. Even clothing, flowers and precious belongings can be stored as a gemstone.

The precious stone can be made in three sizes –3, 5, and 9 carat and in four shapes –Round Cut, Princess Cut, Heart Cut, and Oval Cut. Eight basic colours are available, namely Aquamarine, Blue Aster, Dark Sapphire, Peridot green, Rose, Champagne Topaz (light brown), Smoky Quartz (dark brown), Pure Black, and premium Ruby red. Gemories will also assemble the stone in a jewelled piece, say a ring, necklace or pendant for daily wear.

Celebrity Chutima Limjaroenrat has used the service and is pleased with the result. “I took hair from my mother, myself, and my daughter to make a locket. To me, this is a symbol of the beauty and purity of a mother’s love and I will be passing it on to my daughter.”

Animal-mad actress, Chollada Mekratri opted to have a snippet of her dog’s fur incorporated into a necklace and earrings. “Pungpond was the first dog I ever had in my life and he stayed with us for 19 years. When he fell ill, I had his fur made into jewellery to remember him forever.”

Socialite MR Mannarumas Yugala Svasti-xuto, also availed herself of the service. “My jewellery piece is a heart-shaped pendant made of dried flowers from my wedding that were bestowed by Her Royal Highness Princess Soamsawali. I chose flowers because the piece will always remind me of my wedding day, which was the important d ay of my life.

Paper Planes’ impossible love

music May 26, 2018 01:00

By MR BADBOY

Melodic rock group Paper Planes are back in the spotlight with their second single, “Sam Sam”, the followup to “Korn Sia Ther Pai”, which appeared on last year’s Genie Records compilation “Showroom Vol 3”.

Danai Thongsinthusak, the guy behind the success of labelmates Retrospect and Sweet Mullet, produced the new single and drummer Ritamnaj “Jazz” Kwanthong handled rapping duties.

“The song’s about those impossible loves that could never become stable relationships,” says singer Tunwa “High” Ketsuwan. “But, even though you know it’s impossible, you don’t want to lose the girl.

“It’s kind of post-hardcore mixed with synthesisers, electronica and R&B. It’s got Jazz rapping and Kitsakorn ‘Yok’ Chanthakasemkhun does a guitar solo. There’s ambient sound added to mimic the feeling of being a loser. And we recorded the whole thing in my bedroom, except for the drums, which were done in the studio.”

The music video features a bartender falling in love with a woman who dates multiple other men, and he feels like he’s getting punched in the face every time. Nevertheless, he keeps smiling through the pain.

Keep up to date with the band at “PaperPlanesTH” on Facebook and “paperplanesbandofficial” on Instagram.

Khunpa get cracking

Indie band Apartment Khunpa pack more their rock and roll, blues and funk onto their fifth studio album, which shares the group’s name, and the first single, “Yud Kham Khuen Wai Tong Na Ther Ja Dee Mai”. They’re on GMM Grammy subsidiary label Sanamluang Music.

Frontman Tul Waitoolkait says the single about an imaginary love blends folk rock and country, rippling with the soft sound of a Hammond organ.

The music video is about a man travelling into the lush jungle, where a woman in a red dress catches his eye – as she would in a jungle. But what happens next is even more surprising than that.

Formed in 2002, Apartment Khunpa also has Piyanart “Pump” Jatikasathira and Gun “Ball” Rujinarong on guitar, Pukan “Mai” Sansuriya on bass and Tassarirk “Ja” Limsila on drums.

Artists from all over the kingdom set out to promote Pattaya as a must-visit destination

With tourism down in the coastal resort of Pattaya now that the low or green season has arrived, the Tourism Authority of Thailand is giving the city a shot in the arm by organising the Thailand Cultural Music Festival this weekend at Bali Hai Bay.

“The festival is a component of our ‘Open to the New Shades’ campaign that utilises music as the medium to promote tourism. Thailand’s dynamic music industry is really growing into one of the country’s greatest assets,” says Sujitra Jongchansitto, deputy governor of Tourism Authority of Thailand’s tourism products and business.

“It also helps build brand recognition for Thailand as a tourist destination as it is undoubtedly one of Asia’s best musical and cultural event destinations. We are putting it together now to stimulate tourism during the low season. We are also following the government’s policy on promoting the Thai way of life, which is an important selling point for tourism and covers arts and culture, food and, of course, music. Local artists and bands, many of whom have performed overseas, will be blending their local sound with Western music instruments,” she adds.

Pol Maj Gen Bandit Khunchak, Pattaya City’s deputy mayor, echoes those sentiments, saying: “We are honoured that the TAT is staging this music event in Pattaya for the first time, especially at Bali Hai, which has undergone major landscape improvements costing more than Bt100 million. We have prepared security measures, traffic control and a large parking lot to cope with the influx of visitors. Pattaya organises many activities and events to encourage tourism but the Thailand Cultural Music Festival is a new innovation. I believe this music event will be able to draw crowds from Bangkok and the surrounding provinces as well as foreign tourists.”

The festival is the first event being hosted by Bali Hai Bay since the renovation works were completed and features an all-star lineup, who will take the stage tonight from 5 until late.

Among them are The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band, known for its modern take on traditional morlam (Isaan music), indie luk thung (Thai folk) singer Zak Chumpae whose song “Kham Pang” has been viewed over 400 million on YouTube and electronic reggae and folk outfit Ga-Pi & The Thai Dub Mafia. Also entertaining the crowds are reggae band Mocca Garden with disco artist Burin Boonvisut, Phatthalung Band, whose song “Mahalai Wua Chon” has been viewed over 200 million times on YouTube, fusion jazz band The Infinity, Urboy TJ with Day Thaitanium, and luk thung artist Kong Huayrai with morlam singer Kanittha “Bell” Baolorpetch.

“It will be a musical phenomenon and the greatest ever show in Thailand with its blend of East-Meets-West music. It isn’t easy to book these well-known bands, who are on a tight show schedule, but we’ve managed it,” Sujitra says.

Between them, these bands represent all four regions of Thailand and many of them are also featuring acts typical of where they live. For example, the Phatthalung Band from the South is featuring the Khai Liem manorah troupe, while Paradise Bangkok will be joined by Rasmee of “Isaan Soul” fame. Also coming to town is Chaiya Mitrchai’s likay troupe.”

“We will have a small stage along the beach road with shows by local bands starting at 4pm,” Sujitra adds.

“I’m honoured that we’ve been invited,” enthuses Nattapon Siangsukon, aka DJ Maft Sai, founder of The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band. “For those who don’t know us, we are a gathering of musicians fascinated by morlam. We all have different backgrounds but have helped each other to develop morlam into a modern sound that the new generation can understand and enjoy. We’re putting our new album together and will be playing some tracks at the concert.”

Actors Louis Scott, Tanawat “Pope” Wattanaputi, and Ramida “Noon” Prapasanobon, stars of the hit Channel 3 period drama hit “Buppesannivas” will also appear on stage.

“Music is the lifeblood of culture, although people from other foreign countries, especially China, don’t understand it. We’ll perform some of the soundtracks from the drama and Noon and I will sing live for the first time on the number for which I wrote the rap part. We are educating the new generation to learn about and understand this kind of folk music,” says Louis.

The Thailand Cultural Music Festival endeavours to promote tourism in Chon Buri and neighbouring provinces while promoting local experiences that could later be developed on a regional, national or international, the TAT says.

With that in mind, festival-goers will also be able to sample the culinary delights of each of Thailand’s four main regions, have their faces painted, buy tattoo stickers and take part in “Snap and Share”, sharing 3D images of Thailand’s attractions from the TAT’s extensive gallery of photographs, or posting them on other social media platforms using the #thailandculturalmusicfestival or #amazingthailand tags. The prize is a colourful raincoat.

Sony buys EMI Music Publishing in $1.9bn deal

Japanese entertainment giant Sony on Tuesday announced a deal to acquire the music publishing firm and record label EMI for a price of around $1.9 billion.

Sony signed a deal with Abu Dhabi-based investment firm Mubadala to buy its 60 percent holding in EMI, giving the Japanese firm an indirect stake of approximately 90 percent, Sony said in a statement.

“We are thrilled to bring EMI Music Publishing into the Sony family and maintain our number-one position in the music publishing industry,” Sony boss Kenichiro Yoshida said in a statement.

He said the music business had “enjoyed a resurgence in the past couple of years” driven by subscription-based streaming services.

EMI is the second-largest music publishing company by revenue and either owns or holds the rights to 2.1 million pieces of music.

It either owns or administers some two million songs, including classics by the likes of Queen, Sam Smith, Pharrell Williams and Drake.

As for Sony, it already owns 2.3 million copyrights, including the Beatles catalogue.

The deal values EMI at $4.75 billion, the Sony statement said, adding that “the closing of the transaction is subject to certain closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.”

Sony will later Tuesday unveil its latest strategic plan under new CEO Yoshida, expecting to focus more on content than hardware.

The electronics and entertainment behemoth last month reported record annual profits worth $4.5 billion, a roaring recovery supported by better sales across the board and helped by box office blockbusters like its Jumanji reboot.

Those figures were seen as a fitting send-off for Kazuo Hirai, who recently stepped down as the firm’s chief executive after spending the past six years pulling the firm out of deep financial troubles.

Hirai led an aggressive restructuring drive at Sony, terminating thousands of jobs while selling business units and assets.

Investors appeared dubious about the acquisition however, with Sony stock down around 0.6 percent in the first few minutes of trade, underperforming the wider Japanese market which was flat.

Following their successful comeback last year after an eight-year hiatus, alternative rockers Harem Belle have now released a new album titled “Sunset & Star” on SRP Label. The first cut, “Dao Tok” (“Shooting Star”), has gone down well with fans, both old and new, and is now approaching five million views on YouTube.

The seven-song album features a variety of sounds, which vocalist Kritsada Rungrasee says reflects the band’s new direction. Kritsada adds that two songs in particular are representative of the alt rockers reincarnation: “60 Winatee … Mee Kee Chuamong?” which speaks about how time passes slowly when we feel bad yet flies by when we are happy, and “Yang Yoo”, which he wrote for a friend who recently broke up with his girlfriend.

Also worth a listen are “Jaak Pai Yang Sangob”, “Yim Thang Namta” and “Thang Wibak”.

The other members of Harem Belle are guitarist Pongsathorn  Mongkholsakulrit, bassist Samrit SaeFoong and drummer Panatsanite Sirirojanavanich.
