Mitsubishi Motors Thailand (MMTh) has introduced a new design for the interior and exterior of nationwide outlets.

According to a press release issued by the company on Friday, the move is based on the global brand message “Drive your Ambition” and intended to provide better customer experiences and also strengthen its brand image.

Morikazu Chokki, president and CEO of MMTh, said: “Overall performance is good, we are in the right track to 2018 target. However, we are still committed to emphasise improvement of products and services. To further evolve our brand, we will implement a new outlet identity to ensure that the customers can experience a consistent Mitsubishi-ness, including looks and feel, as well as service quality of Mitsubishi Motors Thailand wherever they are.”

Mitsubishi Motors Thailand plans to upgrade its 220 outlets nationwide by FY2020 while changes at the first 40 outlets will be completed within FY2018. Nine of them have been completed.

Solar Gard, which makes window film and protective coatings for the architecture and automotive markets, hopes to win a 5 per cent market share in Bangkok next year with sales of Bt60 million, the company said in a recent press conference.

Kunat Lertratananon, CEO of Solar Gard, said presently Solar Gard has a total of seven dealerships, located in Rachayothin, Barom Ratchachonnanee, Ekamai, Ramindra, Rangsit and Pak Kret.

“Solar Gard plans to grow continuously in Thailand,” Kunat said. “We have a target of achieving 5 per cent market share from a market worth Bt1.5-1.6 billion per year.

“In 2019 we plan to appoint more dealers in major provinces such as Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Songkhla and Phuket respectively. We also plan to appoint seven more dealers in Bangkok.”

“Competition in the solar film market in Thailand is pretty fierce especially with car showroom groups. However, solar films have become a necessity that consumers are willing to pay for, compared to other goods in the car accessory segment,” he said.

The new car market this year is expected to exceed 920,000 units, which will benefit the solar film business due to this growth.

Billions of reasons to check out expo action

With auto lovers tipped to fork out Bt55 bn in orders, there is plenty on show to help loosen those purse strings

This year’s Motor Expo features a good collection of concept vehicles and new models as well as many other attractions that could attract more than 1.5 million visitors.

The expo, which marks the year-end auto-buying season, is being held at the Challenger Hall, Impact Muangthong Thani, until December 10.

Organisers say that as much as Bt55 billion could be generated from auto sales and other spending, including booth set-up. Motor Expo founder Kwanchai Paphatphong said that this year, 45,000 orders are expected to be placed for automobiles, plus another 8,000 for big bikes.

Five auto makers are showing off hi-tech concept vehicles at the Motor Expo. They include Mercedes- Benz (EQA), Mazda (Vision Coupe), MG

(E-Motion), Mini (John Cooper Works GP) and Porsche (Mission E).

More than 20 new and minor-change models are being displayed at the show, with auto companies eyeing to win a large number of customers before wrapping up their 2018 sales performance.

Auto sales are expected to pass the 1-million-unit mark this year, and many companies have been upping their sales targets as well as market projections during the second half of the year.

In terms of products, there’s a lot to see. While Audi is presenting its new A6 Avant, BMW’s highlight is on the new 8 Series while Mercedes-AMG took the opportunity to launch the CLS 53 4MATIC+.

The fight is already on in the Japanese executive car class between the new Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. While the Camry has already been officially launched for sale with pretty attractive packaging and pricing, the Accord is just being unveiled here to create customer awareness before its official launch early next year.

Nissan is the first major auto maker to officially launch an EV (electric vehicle). The much-anticipated Leaf is priced at Bt1.99 million, and it will be interesting how this futuristic model will perform in the Thai market as EV charging infrastructure is quickly growing.

Hyundai is also quick in the EV market, displaying the Kona Electric at its main stage. Local EV manufacturers like FOMM are also present, but the small size of the vehicles being offered limits them to slower driving in closed areas.

While super luxury brand Rolls-Royce is showing off its first SUV – the Cullinan, Italian supercar maker Lamborghini has also taken the same approach, pulling the wraps off the monstrous Urus (I call it Darth Vader’s SUV). Aston Martin is showing the new Vantage, McLaren is present with the 600 LT, and Porsche has introduced the new Macan that’s expect to sell very well in the luxury crossover market.

Visitors also get a chance to shop for car audio equipment with the large number of promotions being offered, along with other accessories for both cars and motorcycles.

I spent some time checking out the imitation leather jackets that come with a starting price of Bt1,000 (real ones would set you back Bt20,000), and bikers will love the large collection of apparel as well as helmets with very low prices.

There are various areas outside of Challenger Hall used for driving activities, including test drives as well as autonomous driving, safety driving and off-roading. The best time to visit the show is late morning on weekdays, when crowds are sparse and parking is easy.

With US sales boom over, carmakers enter belt-tightening mode

New York

Auto executives have spoken glowingly of a future with emissions-free vehicles, smart transportation systems and cars that drive themselves.

But in the interim, companies like General Motors — which on Monday unveiled major job cuts — face decidedly more mundane questions: How to respond to slowing US demand as higher interest rates bite into new car sales while more used vehicles are also entering the market?

“It’s going to be a smaller market,” Cox Automotive economist Charlie Chesbrough said of GM and Ford, which is likewise expected to eliminate jobs and perhaps shutter factories.

Both GM and Ford want to be major players in autonomous driving and other newer technologies, an objective that will demand billions of dollars in new investment and could ultimately lead to more industry consolidation, analysts say.

“The pie is starting to shrink a little bit, or at least that’s their view and they’re trying to get themselves right-sized before things get much worse,” Chesbrough said.

Cox Automotive projects new US car sales will slow to 16.6 million units in 2019 and 16.5 million units in 2020, a drop below the 17.0 million level that sales are expected to again eclipse in 2018.

The forecast includes the effect of higher interest rates and the drag from a trove of leased cars manufactured during the boom period. But it does not assume an all-out trade war, which would further dent sales, Chesbrough said.

‘Nowhere to go but down’

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump on Twitter threatened new tariffs on car imports, amplifying his response against GM, whose job cuts affect the politically crucial states of Michigan and Ohio.

Auto cycles typically end with a five or 10 percent drop, a relatively modest decline that automakers take as a signal “to get their production house in order,” said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.

“You know that once you’re passed the peak, you have nowhere to go but down and that’s what scares auto executives,” said Colas, adding that auto sales could go as low as 13.5 million in a recession.

Adding to the dilemma is uncertainty about the outlook for new car sales in the medium term given potential technological disruption.

Will more drivers opt for ridesharing and against owning their own vehicle? How many consumers will opt for an electric car once more vehicles hit the market at lower price points? When will autonomous driving arrive in a meaningful way?

“No one has any idea what the next cycle is going to look like,” Colas said. “In this case, GM not only has to plan for normal cyclicality, but GM clearly feels it needs to plan for the next five to 10 years.”

Consolidation ahead?

GM plans to shutter seven plants worldwide, including five in North America that build sedans that have not been selling well in the United States. The company did not release an estimate of the total potential employment hit but some news reports have put it at 14,000 workers or more.

GM Chief Executive Mary Barra characterized the move, intended to save an estimated $6 billion, as part of an effort “to be highly agile, resilient and profitable, while giving us the flexibility to invest in the future.”

Many expect the GM downsizing to be followed by cuts at Ford, which has announced plans for an $11 billion restructuring.

“We know there’s more to come,” said Michigan-based Chesbrough, alluding to Ford.

On Monday, Ford said it expected the bulk of the costs connected to the reorganization to come outside of North America, but added that it expected a “headcount reduction” over time in global salaried staff.

Ford is phasing out a series of cars such as the Focus, Fusion and Taurus, while steering funds to pickups, SUVs and other large models, as well as new technology investments.

“These traditional sedans destroy value,” Ford Chief Executive James Hackett told analysts last month, adding that the company would release details about the reorganization “as soon as we can.”

Both companies have announced ventures with other firms, with Ford unveiling strategic alliances with India’s Mahindra and Germany’s Volkswagen and the GM-led Cruise autonomous vehicle venture receiving $2.75 billion in funds from Honda as well as $2.25 billion from Japanese conglomerate Softbank.

Building autonomous vehicles is expected to require billions of dollars in new investment.

Analysts think the US auto giants could eventually be in the market for a deeper transaction with a non-US company, perhaps a full-scale merger.

“The big issue is that this industry still employs a lot of people everywhere around the world and local governments don’t like to see automakers shed jobs,” Colas.

“So it’s going to have to be a very stressful time in the industry before they go to governments and say, ‘Ok, we’ve got to do this.'”

General Motors shuttering plants, cutting 15% of workforce

General Motors shuttering plants, cutting 15% of workforce

Auto & Audio November 27, 2018 06:57

By Agence France-Presse
Washington

In a massive restructuring, US auto giant General Motors announced Monday it will cut 15 percent of its workforce to save $6 billion and adapt to “changing market conditions.”

The moves include shuttering seven plants worldwide as the company responds to changing customer preferences and focuses on popular trucks and SUVs and increasingly on electric models. Wall Street cheered the actions, while US and Canadian leaders expressed outrage.

The closures also drew sharp criticism from the US and Canadian labor union representing GM workers, which accused the company of shifting production overseas at the expense of North American workers.

The job cuts from GM’s current 180,000-strong work force will be particularly stinging in politically crucial areas of Ohio and Michigan, a region US President Donald Trump has promised to revive.

“The actions we are taking today continue our transformation to be highly agile, resilient and profitable, while giving us the flexibility to invest in the future,” GM CEO Mary Barra said in a statement.

“We recognize the need to stay in front of changing market conditions and customer preferences to position our company for long-term success.”

Trump expressed dismay at the plan and said he was “very tough” with Barra when they discussed the reorganization.

“I spoke with her when I heard they were closing and I said, ‘You know, this country has done a lot for General Motors. You better get back in there soon,'” he told reporters at the White House. “They better put something else in.”

Barra also met at the White House with Trump’s senior economic adviser Larry Kudlow, in what officials said was a previously scheduled meeting.

Trump’s aggressive trade policies have been aimed specifically at saving US manufacturing jobs, including the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which took aim at rules governing auto trade to favor the US industry.

Still, GM will shutter three North American auto assembly plants next year: the Oshawa plant in Ontario, Canada; Hamtramck in Detroit, Michigan and Lordstown in Warren, Ohio.

In addition, GM will close two US propulsion plants — which produce batteries and transmissions — in Baltimore, Maryland and Warren, Michigan, as well two unidentified plants outside of North America.

The company already had announced plans to cease operations at its Gunsan, South Korea plant.

While the company said in its quarterly earnings late last month that it saw costs jump by $400 million due to Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum, a spokeswoman said the latest decisions “are not related to any recent trade or tariff decisions.”

‘Deep disappointment’

Senator Sherrod Brown, an Ohio Democrat, lambasted GM’s move as “corporate greed at its worst” and also took a swipe at the 2017 tax cut favored by Trump which was touted as a jobs winner.

“The company reaped a massive tax break from last year’s GOP tax bill and failed to invest that money in American jobs,” Brown said on Twitter.

In Canada, Prime Minster Justin Trudeau expressed “deep disappointment” with the plant closure.

Workers at the Ontario plant staged a wildcat strike to protest the closure.

The job cuts will include a 25 percent reduction in executive-level employees to “streamline decision making,” the company said.

According to reports, the five North American plants concerned employ nearly 7,000, including 3,000 workers in the Ontario plant.

GM shares jumped after the announcement, closing up 4.8 percent on the day. Analysts were generally upbeat about the news.

“In contrast to times past, General Motors under CEO Mary Barra is trying to get ahead of a potential crisis by making cuts now,” Michelle Krebs of Autotrader said in a client note.

While GM has been increasing its focus on highly popular trucks and SUVs, the company said it would also prioritize investment in “next-generation battery-electric architectures.”

In an investor call, Barra said some GM cars would no longer be available in North America, including the Chevrolet Cruze.

‘Slap in the face’

UAW, the autoworkers union, blasted GM’s decision, saying the company was just looking for cheaper workers, and vowed to fight back.

“This callous decision by GM to reduce or cease operations in American plants, while opening or increasing production in Mexico and China plants for sales to American consumers, is, in its implementation, profoundly damaging to our American workforce,” said UAW vice president Terry Dittes.

China has become an increasingly important market for the automaker and in the first nine months of 2018, it sold 2.7 million cars in China compared to 2.6 million in all of North America.

However, spokeswoman Julie Huston-Rough denied the charge, telling AFP that “these products will not be manufactured in other locations for the North American market.”

She also said the company remains committed to its facilities in Ohio, despite the closure of the Lordstown plant, with six other locations and 4,000 employees, as well has hundreds of suppliers and dealers.

Jerry Dias, president of Unifor, the Canadian labor union, said he “will vigorously fight again to maintain these good-paying auto jobs.”

Huston-Rough said the job cuts will be accomplished through “a combination of retirements, layoffs and work relocations.”

The much-awaited Lamborghini Urus SUV has been launched in Thailand by a new authorised importer, Renazzo Motor.

A 4-litre V8 twin-turbo engine propels the Urus to speeds exceeding 300 kilometres per hour, making it one of the fastest SUVs ever produced.

It accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds, 0 to 200km/h in 12.8 seconds, and has a top speed of 305km/h.

ML Nathasit Diskul, director of Lamborghini Bangkok (Renazzo Motor), said on Monday: “The Lamborghini Urus is a super-SUV that has enjoyed overwhelmingly positive feedback in every country where it has been launched, and globally its production has been covered for almost a year as of today. I’m very confident that, as the world’s first super-SUV, the Urus will take the trend of super-sport utility vehicles to the next level.”

“The starting price of the Lamborghini Urus is Bt23.42 million, which includes top-class after-sales service and full-option maintenance at our service centre for five years by our team of mechanics who have over 20 years of experience,” he added.

The first delivery for Urus super-SUVs booked during December will take place during the first half of next year.

Extreme Moroccan terrain puts LCVs to the test

Nissan’s Patrol and Titan offer on-road comfort, while Navara and Terra excel in sand dunes

Nissan is hoping to sell almost 1 million light commercial vehicles (LCVs) around the world this year, reflecting the increasing popularity of these

vehicles.

According to the Yokohama-based manufacturer, one in six vehicles it sold around the world last year were an LCV, and half of those were pick-ups. Nissan’s mid-term plan is to grow sales by 40 per cent within 2022, and registering an operating profit of above

8 per cent.

Nissan recently held a special driving event in Morocco for auto journalists from several markets around the world, including Thailand. It picked four outstanding models from its global LCV lineup to be driven in varying Moroccan conditions, ranging from tarmac to rocks to beautiful but treacherous sand dunes.

The lineup was interesting, as it featured models from different continents – the large Titan pick-up from the US, the Patrol SUV from Japan, Navara 1-ton pick-up from Spain and the Terra PPV (pick-up passenger vehicle) from the Philippines (the recently-launched Thai version fitted with a newer engine could not make it in time for the event).

Also on display and featured were specialised vehicles from the Nissan stable, including the Armada Mountain Patrol, Patrol Fanta Limon, and Navara Dark Sky Concept (along with the observatory-class telescope on a bespoke off-road trailer) that was developed with the European Space Agency. The Dark Sky was just unveiled in September at the Hanover Motor Show.

Upon arrival in Er-Rachidia in Morocco, journalists from Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, the Middle East and Thailand took up position in three caravans featuring the four models, and switched vehicles throughout the three-day drive in order to experience what each had to offer under different conditions.

Although it was tiresome to change vehicles all day long, it was easy to notice the strengths of each truck, as well as their weaknesses. For example while the Patrol and Titan offered highly comfortable rides and had large, high-torque 5.6-litre V8 petrol engines that were perfect for on-road as well as rock driving, the lighter and diesel-powered Navara and Terra were easier to handle on the sand dunes.

The sandy Moroccan landscape was spectacular enough to make Windows screensavers, and it was no wonder why it was chosen for several movie sites (including The Mummy and Spectre).

While light off-roading sections of the drive were easy to deal with (2WD did fine on some parts), the sand dunes were definitely the big challenge for those trying it for the first time.

Having some experience in tricky sand before, I knew that the team of Spanish instructors were serious when they stressed that going up and down steep dunes had to be done in a straight line.

The importance of throttle timing is multiplied in sand driving, and only experience can teach you how much to press (or ease) that throttle in order to maintain the right momentum and glide through the sandy terrain. It’s rather against your instinct, but once you get the driving line and timing right, you’re fine.

Fortunately we weren’t forced to cross particularly steep dunes that are really scary, especially for those with a fear of heights), and actually had a challenging (and fun) time at the sand dunes on the northern tip of the Sahara Desert.

Er-Rachidia

Er-Rachidia is the capital and largest city of the Draa-Tafilalet region in eastern Morocco. It has approximately 90,000 inhabitants scattered across a sparsely populated area.

Once part of the Paris-Dakar Rally (2006 and 2007) Er-Rachidia has long been considered the “gateway to the desert”. After driving past the city, there are numerous terrain changes including some with gruelling conditions.

Vehicles

Nissan Titan

The Titan was my favourite model in this lineup, not only because it is huge (the cabin is so wide it’s impossible to reach the passenger-side door panel), but because of the throbbing 5.6-litre V8 and the large number of extra features offered. It just makes the top Thai pick-up trucks look like children’s toys.

Nissan Navara

The Navara is built in Thailand and also in Barcelona, and comes with a multi-link rear suspension providing a high level of comfort compared to the conventional leaf spring type. Nissan Terra

After launching the first Terra model, Nissan denied plans for a PPV version, but it eventually arrived. Being the late bloomer in the PPV market, the Terra needed to offer attractive features like a rear-view monitor and double-wishbone/5-link rear coil spring suspension tuned for handling and ride comfort.

The Terra was first offered in China, and is currently being launched in Asean markets, while Australia, the Middle East and South America could also welcome it in the future.
