When was the last time you gave feedback that works?

Seven years ago, I broke up with my working partner because of one single piece of feedback: “I don’t feel like we are a team here.” He told me that on the last day of the five consecutive workshops we ran together. Ironically, the workshop was aiming to create collaboration and transformation for leaders during the time of organisation restructuring.

We helped create teamwork for leaders but we failed to work as a team.

It was hard for me to understand why he raised this issue on the last day, but did not provide me any feedback along the way.

Later on, I realised that it was me who was also avoiding giving him my feedback.

I tried to convince myself that it was not a big deal, that he would figure things out and that all the issues would be resolved at the end.

Why are we reluctant to give direct feedback?

Delivering feedback is uncomfortable, especially when we often look at feedback as a negative response. What if he gets super defensive and starts blaming me? What if she gets upset? What if she cries? What if he blames it all back on me?

Most often, we focus about the other person’s reaction rather than perceiving feedback as a tool to connect and expand our understanding of one another.

Even though it seems like a cliche, I believe that feedback is a gift.

Constructive feedback is an important ingredient for personal and professional development.

But let’s face it, sometimes feedback can hurt.

So, how can we take the sting out of feedback, and embrace it as a path to achieve our personal full potential?

1. Start from mindset: Start from the mindset that feedback, however painful, has one purpose: to help the individual grow in their selfreflection and awareness. We often look at feedback as something negative. However, feedback, properly given and received, may also be defined as an opportunity to expand one’s understanding and can be used as a tool for achieving positive results. Properly given, this feedback becomes constructive.

We receive feedback daily and from different sources. If we can understand it and use it, this feedback can empower us to communicate more openly and improve our performance in many areas.

2. Focus on observed behaviour and the effect of the behaviour you want to direct: Provide details for examples of behaviours by focusing on what the person did and hold your assumptions or interpretations you made from your viewpoint. You would need to identify examples to support the feedback you want to give and organise your thoughts so that you were able to present your feedback coherently.

3. Create space for an opportunity to respond: The truth is, we cannot change anyone without their consent. The decision rests upon them in the end. What we should realise is that constructive feedback has two interactors – one giver and one receiver. It is not just something we must “take”, but something we can respond to and interact with.

4. Direct towards the future: The purpose of feedback is not to attach to the past, rather it is to plan for the future. Although feedback begins with a consideration of past or current behaviour, it certainly does not end there. Useful feedback uses past actions as a springboard to develop an effective plan for future actions.

5. Be supportive: Useful feedback is given in a spirit of supportiveness. Feedback should never be given in a way that belittles the recipient or makes others look good at someone else’s expense.

Feedback is considered one of the most powerful influences to learning and achievement, but the impact can be either positive or negative.

Bill Gates was once quoted as saying: “We all need people who will give us feedback. That’s how we improve.” Feedback does not have to be painful. When feedback is healthy, you will find that it becomes an opportunity to initiate problem solving rather than dreaded encounters.

Ten hot consumer trends for this year and beyond

business January 08, 2018 01:00

By The Nation

Exploring the future from the perspective of an early adopting user perspective, Ericsson ConsumerLab has released the latest edition of its annual trend report “The 10 Hot Consumer Trends for 2018 and Beyond”.

The report points to a paradigm shift as consumers expect digital technology to increasingly operate on human terms. Body language, facial expression and into nation will augment voice and touch to control consumer interaction with tech devices, easing adoption in an everincreasing pace of technological change. This report presents insights based on Ericsson’s longstanding consumer trends programme, now in its seventh year. The quantitative results referred to in the report are based on an online survey of 5,141 advanced Internet users in Johannesburg, London, Mexico City, Moscow, New York, San Francisco, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Sydney and Tokyo that was carried out in October 2017.

Respondents were advanced Internet users aged 1569, who have an “urban early adopter” profile with high average use of new digital technologies.

These are the 10 trends for 2018 and beyond:

1. Your Body is the User Interface: More than half of current users of intelligent voice assistants believe that we will use body language, expression, intonation and touch to interact with tech devices as if they were fellow humans. Some two in three think this will happen within a mere three years.

2. Augmented Hearing: Some 63 per cent of consumers would like earphones that translate languages in real time. And 52 per cent want to block out a family member’s snoring.

3. Eternal Newbies: Also, 30 per cent say new technology makes it hard to keep their skills up to date. But it also makes us instant experts. And 46 per cent say the Internet allows them to learn and forget skills faster than ever.

4. Social Broadcasting: Social media is being overrun by traditional broadcasters. But half of consumers say AI would be useful to check facts posted on social networks.

5. Intelligent Ads: Advertisements may become too smart for their own good. More than half of augmented reality (AR)/virtual reality (VR) users think ads will become so realistic they will eventually replace the products themselves.

6. Uncanny Communication: Half think not being able to tell the difference between human and machine would spook them out. And 40 per cent would also be spooked by a smartphone that reacts to their mood.

7. Leisure Society: Just under one in three students and working people do not think they need a job to develop a meaningful life. And 40 per cent say they would like a robot that works and earns income for them, freeing up leisure time.

8. Your Photo is a Room: Imagine being able to walk into a photo and relive a memory. Well, three out of four believe that in only five years they will use virtual reality to walk around in smartphone photos.

9. Streets in the Air: City streets may be choked with traffic but the skies remain free. Some 39 per cent think their city needs a road network for drones and flying vehicles. But almost as many worry that a drone would drop on their head.

10. The Charged Future: The connected world will require mobile power. More than 80 per cent believe that in only five years we will have longlasting batteries that will put an end to charging concerns.

The SET has made a riproaring start to the new year, jumping 2.1 per cent to a new alltime high of 1,791 in the first two trading days.

The latest leg of the rally has been driven by domestic institutional buying of Bt5.6 bn and foreign buying of Bt1.6 bn. We believe the market’s strong momentum will continue in first half 2018 despite various headwinds (alltime high valuations, US Fed balance sheet reduction, rising global interest rates and increasing geopolitical instability in North Asia and Mideast).

Rising commodity prices (particularly oil and coal), the current account surplus, new economic stimulus packages and ultimately, progress on a general election and EEC/ infra project rollout should offset these factors and push the SET index higher.

If forward P/E can be maintained at the 15.5x level, then we see no reason why the SET cannot breach the 1850 pts level by midyear.

However, once the positive impact from the low base effect for corporate earnings/ tourist arrivals, and news flow on the general election has run its course, we expect investors to start turning more cautious – particularly as the gap between Bank of Thailand and US Fed policy rates widens. Also the prospects of a unified civilian government look rather bleak after a yearend election. Combined with a potential pullback in commodity prices from peak levels we expect the SET to end the year at 1810 pts – or 15x forward P/E.

We remain overweight on the upstream energy, banking and property sectors. Our top picks include 2017 laggards such as SCB, BAY, SCC, LH, PSH and QH. We also like PTTEP whose share price has risen only 15 per cent since midJune 2017, vastly underperforming the 48 per cent gain in Brent crude oil prices in the same period.

We could also see “upcountry” retail stocks get a shortterm boost from the Cabinet’s recent approval of a new round of stimulus measures aimed at helping lowincome houseฌholds as well as the rise in consumer confidence to a 3year high. In addition retailers could benฌefit from wealth effect of the stock market rally and a proposed hike of Bt215 in the minimum wage (to be decided on January 15). Potential beneficiaries of these factors include CPALL, BJC, GLOBAL, HMPRO, M and ROBINS.

Foreign capital continues flowing into the Asian capital markets. From the beginning of this year, the baht came second in its depreciation against the US dollar in Asia. It’s in line with our view that it’s highly likely for the BOT to lessen its intervention in the baht this year and the Thai currency may appreciate more against the US dollar and other currencies.

The baht appreciation and global crude price’s new high were cited for the SET Index’s alltime high, led by blue chips in SET50. Meanwhile, we see investors can continue to hold small and mid caps. Now, the ratio of forฌward PE of SET compared to forward PE of SET50 has fallen to a fouryear low.

Investment strategy: Alltime high of the SET Index could be technically positive factor. We suggest to hold stocks to let profit run in the short term.

Stock picks:

Property Group with attractive dividend: AP, LH, QH, SIRI

Communications Group with gains from state relaxation: ADVANC, TRUE

Stocks with sound fundamentals, ones among the most laggards and limited downside risks: CK, TU

Small caps: JMT, PRM

Refineries with gains from baht appreciation, high crude price and seasonal effect of gross refining margin: BCP, IRPC, SPRC

Retail Group with shortterm gains from increase in minimum wage nationwide, particularly retails with grassroots people as customers: GLOBAL, ROBINS, SINGER, TNP.

Different approaches to bitcoin in Asia

Different approaches to bitcoin in Asia

From clampdowns to a warm embrace, regulators in Asia have taken very different approaches to dealing with the bitcoin phenomenon. Here are the developments in a few key markets:

 – Chinese clampdown –

In mid-September, China’s central bank, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), told virtual currency trading platforms based in Beijing and Shanghai to cease market operations.

Authorities also clamped down on ethereum and any other electronic units that are exchanged online without being regulated by any country.

The PBOC said it wanted to fight “speculation” around the crypto-currencies, which “seriously disrupted the financial system”.

This came after the National Internet Finance Association of China — an offshoot of the PBOC — drew up a damning report on virtual currencies, saying they were “increasingly used as a tool in criminal activities” such as drug trafficking.

Experts say Chinese authorities are also concerned about possible capital flight which could harm the value of the yuan.

However, the authorities in Beijing have not yet attacked bitcoin mining — the creation of the digital currency.

Between 60 and 70 percent of new bitcoins are created in China.

– Korean concern –

Hyper-wired South Korea was also a hotbed for virtual currencies such as bitcoin, accounting for some 20 percent of global transactions, about 10 times its share of the world economy.

But South Korean authorities late last year banned financial institutions from dealing in virtual currencies on fears of a bubble fuelled by retail speculators.

About one million South Koreans, many of them small-time investors, are estimated to own bitcoins and demand is so high that prices are around 20 percent higher than in the US.

Initial coin offerings (ICOs) — where companies sell newly mined cryptocurrencies to investors for real money — were also outlawed.

The government has also pledged to strengthen investor protection rules, in an effort to curb speculation and potential fraud.

Announcing the ban on ICOs in September, South Korea’s Financial Services Commission declared “cryptocurrencies are neither money nor currency nor financial products”.

Youbit, a South Korean exchange trading bitcoin and other virtual currencies, declared itself bankrupt in December after being hacked for the second time this year.

North Korea was accused of being behind the first attack.

– Singapore caution –

Singapore’s central bank has issued a warning over cryptocurrencies, cautioning the public about the risk of jumping in on the “bitcoin bubble”.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore noted they are not backed by any central bank and are unregulated, which means those who lose their investments have no grounds for redress under Singapore law.

Yusho Liu, co-founder of Singapore-based cryptocurrency wallet Coinhako, says demand has been soaring, with transactions up around 10-fold over the past year.

However, while regulators have been prepared to offer a cautious free rein to the digital units, “financial institutions and service providers have been rather resistant”, Liu told AFP.

“In fact, I believe that only 30-40 percent of the market potential is fulfilled because of the friction generated by such matters. This is the key missing piece of Singapore being the fintech hub,” said Liu.

– Japanese jump in –

The high-profile collapse of digital currency exchange platform MtGox failed to douse the enthusiasm for virtual currencies in Japan, which in April became the first country in the world to proclaim it as legal tender.

As many as 10,000 businesses in Japan are thought to accept bitcoin and bitFlyer, the country’s main bitcoin exchange, saw its user base pass the one-million mark in November.

Many Japanese, especially younger investors, have been seduced by the idea of strong profits in the context of ultra-low interest rates that offer little in the way of returns.

However, the governor of the Bank of Japan, Haruhiko Kuroda, has recently issued a warning that the recent rise of the bitcoin price was “abnormal”.

Public warned of digital currency ‘Ponzi-like’ fraud

THE FINANCE MINISTRY has issued a warning about the high risk of investing in digital currencies, but so far there have not been any concrete measures adopted to deal with the rising popularity of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Pornchai Theeravej, finance and economics adviser to the Fiscal Policy Office, said people should be aware of the dangers of investing in digital currencies as some schemes promised unreasonably high returns similar to Ponzi schemes. He also warned that people who deceive others could be charged with fraud.

The value of digital currencies had been highly volatile, he said, apparently referring to the fluctuating value of bitcoin on the global market.

Thailand and other countries had not yet legalised digital currencies as a means of financial payments, he added. The Finance Ministry, Bank of Thailand, Securities and Exchange Commission and Anti-Money Laundering Office were working together to find effective measures for dealing with digital currencies, he said.

Other popular cryptocurrencies besides bitcoin include Ethereum and Litecoin, both of which use blockchain technology in their underlying software.

Hotel and property developer Dusit International says its flagship Dusit Thani Bangkok will remain open until January 5, 2019, rather than April 16 this year as planned. It said the closing date has been extended to allow more time to add value to the replacement hotel, which will be part of a Bt36.7-billion mixed-use project being built in partnership with Central Pattana.

Founded by Thanpuying Chanut Piyaoui, the Dusit Thani Bangkok was the city’s tallest edifice and largest hotel when it opened on February 27, 1970.

It pioneered five-star hospitality inspired by authentic Thai values and ushered in a new era of tourism for the city, revolutionising dining, entertainment and even the way people organised wedding receptions in the process.

With its new hotel, Dusit International plans to mirror that success by creating a new city landmark that boosts the area’s appeal, enhances existing infrastructure, creates new opportunities for local businesses, celebrates Thai culture, and elevates the brand’s standing internationally.

“Since we officially announced the hotel’s redevelopment earlier last year, we have been inundated with messages from guests, customers and long-time fans of the hotel expressing their opinions about the project,” said group chief executive Suphajee Suthumpun.

“While the majority expressed excitement about our next chapter, there were also those who wondered how we could possibly embrace our heritage and continue our legacy in a new building.

“The answer, of course, lies in taking our time to ensure we get it right. We are exploring many ways to add value to the new hotel and mixed-use project in terms of design and innovation. This includes embracing a green concept that reflects our prime location opposite Lumpini Park, creating direct links to both the MRT and BTS mass-transit rail systems, and alleviating traffic in the area by providing new infrastructure.”
