DIGITAL ECONOMIC

THE FEDERATION of Thai Industries, the country’s largest organisation for industrial-goods manufacturers, has embarked on a master plan to help members ride Thailand’s digital economy dream.

Director-general Jumrud Sawangsamud said that in the 4.0 industry era, to maintain competitiveness manufacturers needed to apply new technology to their supply chain, customer management and business-to-business transactions.

“The master plan was designed to drive our members in all industries to enter the industry 4.0 era,” he said.

Under the master plan, all members will be encouraged to adopt information technology and automation in the production process when renovating their businesses, which have been affected by increase in labour costs.

Jumrud noted that mass customisation would be a focus of the plan.

The Industry 4.0 master plan calls for manufacturers to adjust their supply chain with information technology and use a digital platform to link customers with manufacturers, paving the way for e-supply chain management and e-business.

For large-scale operators, orders could be customised to fit a particular order. Orders would be linked with a manufacturer’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) system.

The ERP system will also be linked with the raw material supplier’s system and the manufacturing system, allowing automatic production according to customers’ orders.

To support the e-business, the FTI has launched the website www.ftiebusiness.com as a business-to-business platform linking the websites of manufacturers. Some 10,000 members from over 30,000 members in 45 industries have joined the e-marketplace.

“Last year, the revenue of e-business transactions via our platform was Bt14 billion. The inclusion of more members provides growth opportunities for the industrial sector,” Jumrud said.

The FTI wants members to help develop a data pool that lists their products for both existing customers and new ones attracted to the electronic marketplace. Jumrud said the pool – expected to be online by the end of this year – should create confidence among customers.

The FTI is also working with government agencies in other areas. For example, in collaboration with the Electronic Transactions Development Agency, it will develop an electronic invoice, or an e-invoice, and a national payment message standard for businesses.

Under the Revenue Department’s plan, the FTI members will start to receive |e-tax invoices from the second half of next year. “The Industry 4.0 [master plan] will enhance the competitiveness of all industries and the country,” Jumrud said.

FTA

ASEAN AND Hong Kong are set to wrap up their free-trade agreement negotiations this year, with the aim of promoting trade, services and investment between the two sides.

Ronnarong Phoolpipat, deputy director-general to the Trade Negotiations Department, is leading the Thai negotiation team and co-chairing the seventh Asean-Hong Kong Trade Negotiating Committee and related meetings in Hong Kong that started yesterday and concludes on Thursday.

This step is crucial, as there will be only one more meeting in August.

“This round of talks should come up with many agreements including trade in goods, trade in services, investment, rules of origin and rules and laws, as Asean and Hong Kong aim to finalise the agreement within the end of this year,” Ronnarong said.

Following six rounds of negotiations, both sides agreed on four areas – customs procedures and trade facilitation, sanitary and psytosanitary, technical trade barriers, and economic and academic cooperations.

Ronnarong said that the Asean-Hong Kong FTA would create great benefits for Thailand and Aseanin many ways.

He said they would include increased opportunities for investors to access funds in Hong Kong, upgrading service standards and encouraging Thailand to become a distribution centre for Hong Kong and Asean.

He said the pact would also help increase market-access opportunities in China as Hong Kong was an efficiency gateway to mainland China.

Last year, more than 90 per cent of goods imports to Hong Kong were re-exported to the mainland market.

Hong Kong is also seen as being able to help develop infrastructure in Asean.

Hong Kong has proposed providing HK$25 million (Bt115 million) to Asean under an economic and academic cooperation.

Hong Kong is currently Thailand’s seventh-largest trading partner with average bilateral trade of US$14.26 billion (Bt509.6 billion) between 2011-2015.

In the first four months of this year, two-way trade was worth $4.08 billion, down 6.66 per cent on the same period last year.

Responsible investment index launched for Asean companies

INVESTMENT INDEX

Singaporean investors are being encouraged to get on board a global trend towards responsible investing, with the launch of an index that includes five companies listed in the city-state.

A growing number of investors across the world are looking at this type of investing, according to Arisa Kishigami, head of ESG (environmental, social and governance) for Asia-Pacific at global index provider FTSE Russell.

They are becoming more aware of the need to respond to global risks such as environmental sustainability and climate change, she said.

“A few years ago, investors were hesitant to embrace ESG strategies due to questions on the contribution to positive investment returns,” she said recently.

“But the interpretation has been changing such that ESG factors are now increasingly considered investment-relevant and as part of the investment process.”

Kishigami added that this had also been the case for the Asean market, which has been steadily gaining traction among investors.

To cater to growing demand, FTSE Russell since 2001 has rolled out several ESG-focused indices with various exchange partners in Asia, including the latest FTSE4Good Asean 5 Index, which was launched last month.

Developed with the Asean Exchanges, the index comprises stocks listed in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. It had a net market capitalisation of US$165.15 billion (about Bt5.9 trillion) as at April 29, with an annual dividend yield of 3.66 per cent.

Of the 47 constituent stocks, five are listed in Singapore: City Developments, CapitaLand, Singapore Exchange, CapitaLand Mall Trust and CapitaLand Commercial Trust.

Companies on the index have met a rigorous assessment using more than 300 indicators covering the three pillars of environmental, social and governance standards to achieve an overall cumulative score.

Kishigami said the index aimed to serve institutional investors who are interested in monitoring, supporting and investing in Asean companies that have better ESG disclosure and action.

“It can also help companies to understand what investors are looking for today, especially in terms of ESG practices.” –

WWF-Lao reveals sustainable energy report

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY

The World Wildlife Fund Lao has revealed a sustainable-energy study that makes recommendations on how to reduce impacts on the environment and biodiversity.

The energy-sector vision was reported by WWF-Lao in Vientiane last week and presented to technical staff from the relevant government sectors.

The report outlines energy use at present and in the future and suggests the types of energy that should be invested in and could provide high benefit, WWF-Lao country director Somphone Bouasavanh said at the meeting.

The report will be a source of reference for government agencies when analysing energy-sector development in Laos.

It will also benefit conservation organisations in implementing the projects, he said.

Laos has an opportunity to become a leader in clean, renewable electricity. Renewable energy sources such as sun, wind, water and biomass energy abound on its territory.

Choices made in the coming months and years could lead to seizing opportunities to leapfrog and embrace the best technologies now or to continue over-reliance on power generation by heavily polluting high-carbon fossil fuel, non-sustainable large-scale hydropower projects, or even a dependence on risky and costly nuclear power. Currently, about a million people do not yet have access to reliable electricity in Laos.

Laos is dependent on hydropower and coal mainly and its Renewable Energy Development Strategy to 2025 follows that trend with the share of non-hydro renewable energies reaching only 10 per cent of the national electricity mix capacity by 2025.

This report shows that another future is possible, where a more diverse mix of renewable sources can meet Laos’ electricity demand and export strategy by 2050, with 44.5 per cent of the installed capacity met by sustainable renewable energies by 2025.

By using this amount of renewable energy reasonably and tapping the large energy-efficiency potential, it will be possible to reduce very significantly Laos’ dependence on fossil fuel or future uranium imports, accelerate access to electricity for all, and ensure stable and competitive electricity prices for both domestic use and export for decades to come.

It will also increase job creation, especially in rural areas where jobs are needed to prevent a massive rural exodus, increase positive cooperation in the region to optimise electricity consumption and production, and reduce environmental and social impacts at all levels.

A sustainable approach to high renewable-energy uptake can ensure electricity-cost stability and maintain system security – that is, provide enough electricity at all times to make sure there is never a risk of the “lights going out”.

TWENTY-ONE countries in Asia-Pacific have agreed to rush the negotiation of the Free-Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific and proposed each country ratify the agreement by the end of this year.

The announcement came out of the recent meeting of Apec trade ministers.

After leading the Thai delega?tion to the 22nd Apec Trade Ministers Meeting in Arequipa, Peru, Vice Minister for Commerce Winichai Chaemchaeng said in light of the Bogor Goal ending in 2020 Apec members had agreed they needed to speed up the free-trade agreement so the pact could be implemented next year for pro?moting trade growth among Apec countries.

Apec members are studying the strategic agreement and providing suggestions so that the FTAAP can be submitted to the leaders of each country for ratification at a Apec meeting at the end of the current year.

Apec countries have also discussed a measure to promote the development of small and medium-sized enterprises to penetrate world markets so SMEs can continue to drive economic growth for Apec countries.

Under the measure, Thailand informed Apec member states that it had a national agenda to promote SMEs development, and shared its experiences with other Apec members to help develop their SMEs.

SMEs have been encouraged to adopt e-commerce for promoting their trading in international markets.

The United Nation awarded Thailand the World Summit of Information Society prize in 2015 for smart online SMEs. As such, the Kingdom has shared its experiences related to online SMEs, Winichai said.

Apec trade ministers also agreed that they must support the finalisation of the Doha Round of talks for the World Trade Organisation soon so that trade would be more liberalised worldwide.

Thailand had a sideline meeting with each Apec member state at the trade ministers meeting, including South Korea, Japan, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and Peru, to exchange opinions and experience on the Trans-Pacific Partnership to help Thailand with its decision on whether to join the pact.

Thailand also asked South Korea to open its market for Thai frozen chicken and Mahachanok mango exports.

Two more Apec meetings will be held this year – the Senior Officials of Apec Meeting in August, and the Apec Leaders Summit in November.

THE GOVERNMENT plans to spend the money gained from today’s re-auction of the 4G licence in developing the country’s Internet system, Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak said yesterday.

Somkid, who is in charge of economic affairs, said the government would invest in improving Internet broadband and gateways.

“We will persuade people to invest in IT, cloud computing and Internet of Things. This will serve as a platform for Thailand to go digital and transform our production sector into digital,” Somkid said.

He was speaking at the “Digital Thailand 2016” seminar held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre.

Somkid said the government was pushing hard for Thailand to become a digital society. He said it was focusing on creating an environment suitable for the country to go in that direction.

//

He added that the country’s key sectors such as agriculture and tourism must be technology-based to boost competitiveness.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission will today holds an auction for a 900MHz 4G licence, with the price starting at Bt75.6 billion.

That was the final bid by Jas Mobile Broadband, which won the licence in December. However, it forfeited the licence after failing to pay the up-front fee before the deadline.

AIS is the only bidder and it is expected to secure the licence with a single bid of Bt75.6 billion.

Meet touts benefits of ‘Thailand 4.0’

THAILAND 4.0

THE GOVERNMENT is pursuing its “Thailand 4.0” project by utilising innovative technology to improve quality of life, productivity and efficiency for all businesses in the nation.

The government will also come out with new laws this year related to digitisation, while the Information and Communications Technology Ministry is setting up three “Digital Thailand” projects.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said at a seminar called “Digital Thailand 2016” yesterday that the government would support the installation of information-technology infrastructure.

It will also promote cooperation between the government and private sectors to develop human resources, hardware, software, and telecommunication equipment, and integrate all sectors such as smart agriculture to support the digitisation of the country.

Moreover, the government will submit seven digital-related laws such as the Digital Privacy Law, Cyber Security Law and Electronic Transaction Law to the Cabinet for approval by the end of this year.

It will also work with local and international businesses and foreign governments to drive the Digital Thailand project and will not leave its business partners behind, Prayut said.

He added that the government would utilise technology and innovation to support the elderly as senior citizens account for a greater proportion of the population.

ICT Minister Uttama Savanayana told the seminar that the three digital projects the ministry would push this year were the Digital for Community scheme, the Digital Park programme for small and medium-sized enterprises, and the Digital Start-up Innovation Network.

He said that for the Digital for Community scheme, the ministry would sign memoranda of understanding with government agencies and the private sector to provide new technology and innovations such as the Internet of Things to support SMEs and smart agriculture in communities nationwide.

The ministry will adapt around 2,000 existing ICT community centres into digital community centres, which will able to help people in each community offer their products online.

Meanwhile, with the Digital Park project, the ministry will act as facilitator for SMEs entering the “Industry 4.0” era in both the domestic and international markets.

With the Digital Start-up Innovation Network, Uttama said his ministry would cooperate with the Industry Ministry, the Science and Technology Ministry, five universities, and the telecom and financial sectors to create a start-up alliance to support digital industry and make the country more competitive. The five universities are Chulalongkorn, Sripatum University, Bangkok University, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi.

Bundhit Eua-arporn, president of Chulalongkorn University, said the institution would be one of mechanisms driving the Digital Thailand project with the role of conducting research and development as well as bringing forward innovations to support the healthcare and tourism industries.

The university will also set up a “CU Innovation Hub”.

India seeks bigger presence in Myanmar

TOP INDIAN business houses including Tata Motors and major banks were in Yangon last week, as part of India’s initiative to deepen its trade and investment with Myanmar.

As part of India’s Act East policy, the country’s commerce and industry minister Nirmala Sitharaman led the high-level business delegation. It was the first high-level business interaction at ministerial level by a foreign country after the Htin Kyaw administration took office.

According to the minister, there are many rooms for cooperation in areas such as power and renewable energy, agriculture, livestock, fisheries, timber and pulses trade, education and skills-building, IT and engineering, healthcare, textiles, automobile industry, tourism and hospitality, construction, banking and finance. She invited Myanmar businesses to hold roadshows in key cities of India, and committed to speeding up road and connectivity projects including those in the border areas.

“India gives high priorities for strengthening relations in the neighbourhood, and in that, Myanmar ranks high. We expect greater cooperation and greater business-to-business interactions. There are calls for improving trade between India and Myanmar. But, connectivity has remained as an issue,” she said.

“I expect to have a better working relationship, greater engagement, and deeper participation of Indian businesses with Myanmar… I expect more things to happen between India and Myanmar, based on sea connectivity, air connectivity, etc. I also expect to look at more Indian investment in Myanmar.”

Joining the delegation were 25 businesses from India and during the 3-day visit, they had discussions with more than 40 Myanmar business leaders.

Sitharaman also held talks with Myanmar’s construction minister Win Khaing, commerce minister Than Myint and , industry minister Khin Maung Cho. They discussed issues related to procurement of pulses, easy access to Indian pharmaceutical companies and products, Indian investment in infrastructure, capacity enhancement and upgrading border infrastructure.

“In the discussions, we highlighted that there should be a level-playing field. India should also be given access to the Myanmar market as much as many of the Asean countries have been given. We highlighted some of the goods of which the duty on the Myanmar side is very high. Hopefully all these will be figured out and trade should improve,” she said.

The minister added that both countries are keen on improving trade relations and a lot of efforts have been put to ease the border regulations. India offers zero tariff on 96.4 per cent of items for Myanmar under its Duty Free Tariff Preference scheme besides Asean-India Free Trade Area. A visa fee waiver is now available for Myanmar nationals applying for Indian business and employment visas.

The India Embassy in Myanmar’s data show bilateral trade value was worth $2 billion in the 2014-15 fiscal year, making India the fifth largest trade partner of Myanmar.

India still ranks low in investment in Myanmar. According to the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration, at the end of April, combined investment since 1988 at US$732.65 billion were only 1.15 per cent of total foreign direct investment that Myanmar has received from over 40 countries.

Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Gautam Mukhopadhaya cited the lack of information, connectivity, and financing as the three fundamental obstacles to Indian businesses. The delegation played a pivotal role in re-familiarising India with Myanmar and bringing Indian industries to realise the value of Myanmar as trade and investment partner, he said.

“India is not so well-connected to Myanmar. For example, there are only three flights a week to India while there are 100 flights to Thailand, about 90 flights to China, about 15 flights to Singapore, about 30-40 flights to Malaysia. So if you see trade and investment figures in comparison with connectivity, it is still not bad.”

The information deficit and connectivity will be addressed through more business events and engaging with Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry. He expects Indian banks can become the engines of trade and foreign investment financing as well as development financing. He sees oil and gas sector as the most promising industry for Indian investment in the near future.

Govt plans to promote export of value-added food products

ศาสตร์เกษตรดินปุ๋ย : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/Govt-plans-to-promote-export-of-value-added-food-p-30286715.html

THE GOVERNMENT will promote more export of value-added food and agricultural products to ensure higher income for farmers and people in the food supply chain, Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak said yesterday.

After presiding over the opening of “THAIFEX-World of Food Asia”, which runs until Sunday at Challenger, Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok, Somkid said Thailand had strong capacity to develop its food supply chain to make more value-added products.

“Thailand’s strengths in the food industry are a great variety of raw materials and highly experienced producers. The government in cooperation with private enterprises will encourage more modern technology in food processing to add value for the products,” he said.

About 45 per cent of Thai food exports are unprocessed raw materials. That proportion should decrease in the near future after the country adopts more modern technology and promotes more innovation.

Tomorrow, Somkid will witness the signing of a memorandum of understanding to establish “Food Innopolis”, the city of food innovation.

More than 30 agencies including nine government units, 13 food companies and 12 universities will sign the MoU to develop foods for the future and create bio-based industries that keep Thailand competitive and benefit the entire value chain.

The project will support innovation in developing food quality, food ingredients, packaging, information technology and logistics so that Thailand has high potential truly to become the “Kitchen of the World” in the near future, Somkid said.

With more value-added products, he expects that food exports will grow by 10 per cent this year.

Vantanee Seang-U-Tai, managing director of Lucky Union Foods, said the company would invest about Bt20 million for quality and product development this year, as well as building a new laboratory to create new products under the innovation-promotion plan.

With strong demand for Thai food and trust in quality, while the problem of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishery practices has been declining, Lucky Union Foods expects 20-per-cent revenue growth to Bt1.6 billion this year.

Rojjanin Phatchararuangkij, managing director of Smile Heart Foods, an exporter of processed seafood products, said his company had forecast 20-per-cent export growth this year.

With rising health consciousness, the company will invest in research and development on producing new healthy foods to serve such consumer concerns as obesity.

Smile Heart Foods will also automate some of its production line and adopt new technology to reduce labour costs.

Vittavat Tantives, executive vice president for corporate marketing at Charoen Pokphand Foods, said CPF had paid high attention to food innovation. It will gradually introduce innovative products in its sausage, ready meal, chicken, egg and shrimp lines.

Normally, the company invests about 1 per cent of its sales revenue in R&D, he said.
