Cosmic Girls sings about complications of romance in “La La Love”

WJSN, also known as Cosmic Girls, has a lot to say about love with its new track “La La Love.”

“This is our first release of the year, and as the new year comes with a lot of expectations and love, our new song is full of love and fluttering feelings,” said Eunseo during the group’s media showcase for its new album in Seoul on Tuesday.

“We’ve been very busy lately, as we had to prepare for the new album and attend award shows at the same time. But we feel so proud of it,” Exy added.

The track, which fronts the act’s sixth EP, “WJ Stay,” touches on various complicated aspects of love as the bandmates sing about cherishing moments with their loved ones as if capturing them in photos. It features 10 of the band’s 13 members. The group’s three Chinese members, Cheng Xiao, Mei Qui and Xuan Yi, are currently absent, as they are pursuing individual activities.

Built around string and retro sounds, “La La Love”, created by the Full8loom team, who also worked on the act’s previous single “Save Me, Save You,” veers toward the act’s signature saccharine sound with a slight touch of dreamy electro pop.

“While we used to showcase our powerful and charismatic sides in our previous album, we tried to focus on our bright sides,” Dayoung said.

The music video of the song, shot against the backdrop of a festive carnival, also overflows with vibrant colours and magical elements.

The seventrack album includes “You Got”, “Star”. “Memories”, “Cantabile”, “12 O’clock” and “Ujung”.

All of the songs feature Exy, the team’s rapper, as a cowriter, while Dawon was credited as both composer and writer in “Ujung,” a sweet rhythmandblues number dedicated to the act’s fan base Ujung.

After debuting in February 2016 with the double singles “Mo Mo Mo” and “Catch Me”, Cosmic Girls gained international following with their girlish image and distinct concepts.

In October last year, the group saw its first win on a music show, on SBS MTV’s “The Show”, with its hit “Save Me, Save You” from its fifth EP, “WJ Please.”

Asked about the group’s New Year’s resolutions and goals, Yeonjung said, “We would like to become a triplecrown winner on music shows with ‘La La Love’.”

Exy added, “I have a very good feeling about this year. This year, I’d like to have more chances to meet our global fans and hold another solo concert.”

Spreading happiness through singing

Duo Darlim&Hamabal creates YouTube sensation by covering J-pop

YouTube is full of videos of cover songs, but not all amateur artists win over viewers. Coed duo Darlim&Hamabal however, was special from the start. When the two debuted on YouTube in December 2017, many saw their potential and predicted the duo would succeed.

Darlim&Hamabal soon grew to become one of the most distinguished artists in Korea’s YouTube scene, garnering more than 184,000 viewers in a year. The team also made a name for itself among global music fans by singing Jpop and popular movie soundtracks.

“We never expected that we would gain such popularity on YouTube in such a short time,” Hamabal, the producer of Darlim&Hamabal, tells The Korea Herald.

“Our dream was to get 10,000 subscribers by the end of 2018, I can’t believe more than 180,000 subscribers are now following our channel,” Kim Darlim, the singer of the duo, adds.

Darlim&Hamabal, often called “Darmabal,” is a YouTube channel through which the two musicians share their favourite song weekly. When Darlim sings in front of the camera, Hamabal sits behind and listens to her sing. So far, the channel has featured 51 songs.

Hamabal, left, and Kim Darlim

The duo’s genres range from K-pop to pop music to movie soundtracks, but it mainly covers J-pop songs.

Its version of Kenshi Yonezu’s “Lemon” had amassed nearly 3 million views as of December 23, while covers of Gen Hosino’s “Koi” and Yonezu’s “Uchiage Hanabi” recorded 1.9 million and 997,000 views respectively.

Viewers say the harmony of Darlim’s clear voice and Hamabal’s talent in arranging songs are the biggest reasons for their explosive popularity.

Many J-pop fans say Darlim’s voice is perfect for expressing the soft or bright mood of Japanese songs.

Comments such as “I’ve never heard such (a) clear and refreshing voice before! Her voice matches the song very well,” or “Hamabal’s song arrangement skills are exceptional” often get thousands of likes.

Many fans have asked whether the musicians are a couple, but the two insist they are just high school friends.

Darlim has pursued music her whole life. She grew up with 1990s hit songs by Kim Kunmo, Wax and Big Mama, and ended up majoring in vocals in college. She also worked as a chorus singer and recorded songs for TV commercials. She once trained to become a K-pop idol at an entertainment company, but quit not long into the session.

“First of all, I was not a good dancer. Vocal trainers also criticised my voice, saying I must change my vocal style to sing Kpop songs well,” Darlim explains.

Darlim was going through a difficult time when she decided to sing her favourite songs and share them with others.

Darlim told Hamabal, who had previously worked with her on recordings, about her idea of launching a YouTube channel.

“I welcomed her idea when I heard it, as I hadn’t had any chance to show myself to the public while working as a music arranger,” Hamabal says.

Right after Hamabal was discharged from his military service, the two started to shoot videos. Just as Hamabal hoped, he now draws massive attention from viewers by appearing on every clip in his signature hippoface white mask.

According to Hamabal, it takes a full week to make each video. Unlike others who add their voices on existing music recorded, Hamabal composes the MR from scratch to find the perfect melody and rhythm for Darlim. When Darlim covers a male singer’s song, Hamabal changes it to a female key. If a song is too high pitched, he makes it softer and smoother to match her voice.

“I always try to make songs sound comfortable to everyone’s ears, even if they listen to it for a long time. As Darlim’s clear voice makes others feel comfortable and relaxed, it goes very well with my MR,” Hamabal says.

Darlim also praises Hamabal’s talent in arranging every detail of each song. Hamabal, who majored in singing and songwriting in college, has long been a fan of Japanese jazz fusion band T-Square, known for their precise and perfect instrument performance.

With the duo’s channel gaining attention, Darlim says she often feels pressured to become a better singer. She once ran out of the studio in the middle of a nighttime recording session because she kept failing to meet her own expectations.

“While sitting on a street, crying, I thought to myself, ‘What has happened to me?’ I started YouTube to enjoy music, but at the time, I couldn’t sleep enough and only worked (to record the song every week.) I suddenly realised that all I have to do is to be myself and sing in my style,” Darlim grins.

Through the experience, Darlim said she learned how to set herself free from the pressure to be perfect and enjoy her work again. These days, she rests if she faces difficulties in recording. And as her confidence has returned, the quality of the videos has also improved.

Among the 51 songs that the duo has covered, 38 are Japanese numbers.

“When I was in college, I struggled to find one specific colour of my voice. Many of the professors and vocal trainers told me that my voice is in the middle of somewhere that can’t perfectly fit in with any type of music,” Darlim says.

However, after falling in love with a song by Japanese artist Miwa, she realised that her voice matched quite well with Jpop.

“I began to listen to more Jpop songs and decided to sing such songs for my career,” she says, adding that she carefully selects clothes, accessories, makeup and hairstyles depending on the mood of each song. When she covered “Koi,” she wore an orange striped shirt as well as hairpins and lipstick that matched the song’s bright mood.

On the “Koi” clip, a fan commented, “If an orange could have life, it would be Darlim.”

To authentically deliver the lyrics, she also pays careful attention to her facial expressions. When she sings her favourite lines, she looks at the camera just as if she were looking at viewers and talking with them.

“I try to memorise all the lyrics, as it would get boring if I looked at the monitor and read the lyrics on it all the time,” Darlim says.

After the duo decides what to sing next, Darlim listens to the song literally all day.

Many Japanese fans speak highly of Darlim’s accurate Japanese pronunciation, saying, “I’ve never seen a foreign singer who can sing J-pop’s lyrics with such accuracy.”

Besides J-pop, Darlim and Hamabal recently covered K-pop songs like Twice’s “Yes or Yes,” and movie soundtracks such as “A Million Dreams.” To celebrate Christmas, the duo covered Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me.”

“As fans from all around the world are watching our channel, we wanted to sing songs in their languages in return. We cover every song we like these days,” Darlim says.

“We hope to be able to release an album with songs that we wrote by the end of 2019,” Hamabal adds.

Award-winning lyricist behind “Killing Me Softly” dead at 91

By Agence France-Presse
Washington

Norman Gimbel, the Oscar and Grammy-winning lyricist behind “Killing Me Softly”, “The Girl From Ipanema” and the theme from iconic sitcom “Happy Days” has died aged 91.

His death was announced on Friday by BMI, which described him as “a truly gifted and prolific writer” who will be greatly missed by friends and fans at the music rights organization.

The Brooklyn native died at his home in Montecito, California, on December 19, his son Tony Gimbel told The Hollywood Reporter.

Norman Gimbel won an Academy Award for Best Original Song alongside co-composer David Shire for Jennifer Warnes’ “It Goes Like It Goes” in the 1979 film “Norma Rae”.

He also wrote Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly” with his longtime collaborator Charles Fox, winning the Song of the Year Grammy in 1973. The hit was later famously covered by 1990s hip hop group the Fugees.

Gimbel’s English lyrics for Brazilian bossa nova hit “The Girl from Ipanema,” which won the Grammy for Record of the Year in 1965, made the jazz standard one of the most covered songs of all time.

The lyricist was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984.

Writing on Facebook, one of Gilbert’s co-writers Robert Folk, who collaborated on about 15 songs with him, said: “Norman was an incredible talent; brilliant in every way, and one who had successfully navigated every genre in popular music.

“I remember one of countless moments with Norman so fondly, when after a playback via phone of a newly finished song for a prominent filmmaker, he said to me privately….

“‘Don’t ever tell them how easy this work is for us, and how much fun we’ve had writing these songs!…. Or else they’ll never pay us all this money again!'”
