Raptor, RS Public’s very popular duo from the 1990s, are making a return to the stage on September 7 as they celebrate their 25th anniversary with the full-scale show “Raptor Evolution 25 Years Mai Mee Krengjai” at Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani.

While aware of the Thai love for nostalgic concerts, organisers probably weren’t expecting tickets to sell out within 20 minutes of going on sale – faster than those for the duo’s “Encore” concert in 2012 at the same venue – but quickly responded by announcing another round at 2pm on the same day.

Joni and Louis of Raptor perform on September 7 at Impact Arena.

“Twenty-five years ago, Raptor was the top teen idol and their albums sold more than one million copies. I don’t think fans today have the same kind of relationship with the artists but we want to take them back to the 1990s and enjoy Raptor again,” said Prin Minsuksaeng, managing director of Coolism, the operator of the Cool Fahrenheit radio station. “The concert’s title refers to how the two have developed over the last 25 years.”

Prin Minsuksaeng and Raptor featuring Louis Scott and Joni Anwar talk about their 25th anniversary concert, “Raptor Evolution 25 Years Mai Mee Krengjai”.

“The concert will show our evolutionary mutation while still highlighting our original sound,” added Louis Scott, who together with Joni Anwar makes up Raptor. Both men are working hard for the concert with voice trainer Patcharida Wattana and choreographer Peerapan Kumarnsit, aka Phee Hijack.

Asked about their look on the poster, Louis explained that the young creative artist had gone back to the duo’s most successful album “Waab Boys” and reimagined the two as modern-day hip-hoppers.

“I been watching our previous concert videos and found the one where we played at a pub in Khorat, Nakhon Ratchasima. That was the first time we returned to the stage and saw fans’ enjoyment and happiness. That was the starting point for designing this show,” Joni said.

Tickets for the earlier show are now at sale at Thai Ticket Major.

Apart from the glamorous clothes and hairstyles, one of the popular things about the Netflix original series “Stranger Things” is the 1980s music. When the third season premiered on Thursday, Spotify took a look at how the series soundtrack resonated with the app’s listeners. After all, since “Stranger Things” launched on July 15, 2016, listeners have spent more than 17 million hours listening to its music via the music-streaming app.Perhaps it’s no surprise to fans of the spooky series that The Clash’s 1981 hit “Should I Stay or I Should I Go” ranks as the most-streamed song on Spotify, either through the original soundtrack or on playlists listeners have created themselves. It turns out listeners have been creating playlists based on the show’s characters: the girl with superpower, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), has had the most playlists created because of her, followed by Steve Harrington (Joe Keery)and Will Byers (Noah Schnapp).

Spotify listeners have created more than 3,500 playlists titled “The Upside Down”, the name of the theme that runs over the title sequences and most of the end credits. The top tracks in these playlists are the eerie track “The Upside Down” from composers Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, as well as the instantly-recognisable “Stranger Things” main theme.

Spotify lists 15 “Stranger Things” podcasts and listeners have spent more than 4.6 thousand hours listening to them. The most-streamed podcast related to the show is “The Stranger Things” podcast by Addi and Darrell Darnell.

The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go” played a central role in Season 1 (Will would sing it to calm himself in the final episode of season one, “Upside Down”), and global streams of the song rose 30 per cent in the two weeks after “Stranger Things” premiered on July 15, 2016.

Top tracks on “Stranger Things” soundtracks and playlists on Spotify are the remastered version of The Clash singing “Should I Stay or Should I Go”, followed by “Stranger Things” by Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein and “Every Breath You Take” by The Police.

The rest are “Africa” by Toto, “Kids” by Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein, “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper, “Elegia” by New Order, “Atmosphere” by Joy Division, “Hazy Shade of Winter” by The Bangles and “Whip It” by DEVO.

For die-hard fans of the series, Spotify’s blog For the Record interviewed actor Finn Wolfhard (who played Mike) and questioned him about his favourite songs from the series. He also revealed the type of music he’s into at the moment … and which decade he’d most like to travel back in time to.

Netflix’s hit series hit “Stranger Things” has been generating unprecedented excitement worldwide since its release yesterday on the streaming service and just as in Japan last week, Netflix Thailand feted the series’ return by recreating the fictional town of Hawkins at Scala Theatre last weekend and also took the opportunity to introduce fans to the actors and director of the first Thai original series from Netflix “Khweng” (“The Stranded”), which is now in the post-production phase.

Answering present to the call were “Stranded” actors Papangkorn “Beam” Lerkchaleampote, Chayanit “Pat” Chansangavej, Chanya “Ning” McClory, Kittisak “Jack” Patomburana along with director Sophon “Jim” Sakdaphisit and celebrities Toni Rakkaen and Chicha Kitty Amatayakul. All dressed up in glamorous 1980’s attire to add to the “Stranger Things” vibe and seemed delighted to wander around such recreated scenes from the popular series as Starcourt Mall in Hawkins and The Upside Down, where fans had fun with exciting activities including Infinity Buyers’ Living Room, Cycle Escape, and Gala Studio.

The science-fiction horror series is directed by the Duffer twins and set in the fictional rural town of Hawkins, Indiana, in the early 1980s. The story begins with the disappearance of Will (Noah Schnapp), one of the main characters. Will’s friends try to find him amid a series of supernatural events. In the new season, the Hawkins crews are on the cusp of adulthood. Romance blossoms and complicates the group’s dynamic, and they have to figure out how to grow up without growing apart. Danger looms, and to survive they hope their friendship is stronger than their fear.

And Thai fans can now get even more enjoyment from the series as Netflix has taken note of their loyalty and added Thai-dubbing.

All 8 episodes of “Stranger Things 3” are now rolling out on Netflix.

With two highly successful seasons under its belt, Netflix last week flew the international media to Tokyo to chat with cast and crew of its original series “Stranger Things” before season three launches today.

The day after the festival, the young cast gathered for a brief interview with the international media and were animous in saying that season 3 is their favourite so far, adding quickly that they couldn’t spoil the suspense by saying why they liked it.

“I can’t really say what my faovourite part is because it all happens in the last few episodes of this season. It’s the same formula but the storyline is totally different. There are new characters and the storyline definitely has a different feel to it,” McLaughlin says,

“The ending is very sad but I like it,” comments Schnapp while Matarazzo adds that it’s an emotional season and heartbreaking too. “There are tears,” he says.

The science-fiction horror series is directed by the Duffer twins and set in the fictional rural town of Hawkins, Indiana, in the early 1980s. The story begins with the disappearance of Will (Schnapp), one of the main characters. Will’s friends try to find him amid a series of supernatural events.

In the upcoming new season, the Hawkins crew are on the cusp of adulthood. Romance blossoms and complicates the group’s dynamic, and they have to figure out how to grow up without growing apart. Danger looms, and to survive they hope their friendship is stronger than their fear. Life has more or less gone back to normal at the end of season 2 and the new story takes place one year later and in summer instead of autumn. The sun is out and the town has its first mall, Star Court, which has ruined trade for the shops but is nonetheless the favourite hangout, especially among the kids.

“It’s different from the last two seasons. The last two seasons were set in autumn but now it’s summer and it’s bright and fun. There’s a different dynamic, especially for the teenagers. They go to the mall and eat ice cream,” McLaughlin says.

The new season focuses more on teenage life, particularly how each gender copes with their romances and friendships.

“I love the two storylines between the couples and how they’re both talking about each other. And the same arguments, they are there too.

Once you become a teenager, like all of us, you get more freedom and responsibility and so we’re more on our own and not merely relying on our parents,” says McLaughlin.

“The show is kind of about what it’s like to be a teenager, but it’s also different because it’s set in a different era. Kids these days aren’t granted as much freedom as kids in the ’80s. It’s hard to compare them but some things just don’t change like normal growing up stuff,” Sink adds.

Even though the youngsters have been in the spotlight since the show debuted in 2016, with the exception of Sink who joined the series in Season 2, they are still not used to fame and having fans approach them all the time.

“I go to Starbucks too. And it’s like, Can I get a picture? I’m like, why? Oh, I forgot. I’m on ‘Stranger Things’,” says McLaughlin.

“It doesn’t really happen because I’m at home. Like in my town, it never really happens. I come on these press tours or to Atlanta. And I’m like in a really heavily populated area and I start getting asked for a photo. But it often really depends on where I am,” adds Matarazzo, who plays Dustin, one of the most popular characters. Like his nerdy character, Matarazzo suffers from cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) and has no teeth. He uses dentures as a result of his condition and uses his fame to raise awareness about it.

The fame of the young actors never ceases to amaze Schnapps who plays Will,  the central character in the first two seasons.  “Sometimes I sit down and think like, wow, I never would have expected this to ever happen to me but here I am now, if you asked me five years ago or even two years ago if this happen, I would have said no.And I’m just really grateful it did.”

Dek Tape 3

Dek Tape 3
By Kitchana Lersakvanitchakul THE NATION415 Viewed

Dek Tape – the original retro concert featuring old-school artists from the 1980s and ‘90s – is returning for a third year and will be staged at the hall on the sixth floor of JJ Mall in Chatuchak this Saturday (July 6) from 3pm to midnight.

“I think this third concert will be as phenomenal as the first two,” says Kittipong Tanarakwong, brand manager of Boonrawd Trading, one of the sponsors. “My first tape was an album by Micro.”

“My hero is Rang Rockestra,” says Witcha Potipassa, marketing director of Gold City Footwear Thailand, which is also supporting the concert.

Organisers and supporters make the power sign at the press conference for “Dek Tape 3” at Fang Pls, a pub and restaurant on Soi Phaholyothin 17.

The story of Dek Tape goes back to 2007 when the “Alternative Thai Festival” concert was organised by Kodindy at Bangkok Hall of Suan Lum Night Bazaar.

“I started dreaming about putting together a concert featuring the artists we miss and whose musical works still inspire passion in us. That festival brought together most of the ‘alternative’ artists from the 1990s. Now, 12 years later, we are calling it ‘Dek Tape’. Every time I stage the Dek Tape concert, I’m happy to see friendsfrom30 years back,” adds Burintorn “Heng” SaeLor, founder of Kodindy and Heavy Organizer.

Organisers and supporters make the power sign at the press conference for “Dek Tape 3” at Fang Pls, a pub and restaurant on Soi Phaholyothin 17.

“The words ‘Dek Tape’ came out of my mouth quite by accident while we were talking about the good old days and Heng immediately seized on them,” explains Montree “Art” Mankhong, managing director of Heavy Organizer, and a fan of Carabao and Blackhead.

And the name is entirely appropriate as it refers to the artists of that era who recorded their albums on cassette tape and inspired an entire generation.

From left, director Yangyong Kuruaungkoul, Morlab Panda, Poo Blackhead, Sorapan Kingpayom and Rang Rockestra

“Our aim with this third edition to showcase the mood and tone of those years,” Heng adds.

The lineup features 11 artists, namely Nuvo, The Sun, Rang Rockestra, Poo Pongsit, Zeal, Noi Pru, Flure, Blackhead, Ing Achita, Um Amarin, the Kai-Jo Brothers and DJ Leo.

“Blackhead’s special show will see us jamming with our friends Phi Ing and Phi Um on the same stage and we’ll also serve as the backup band for both of them. Fans can expect to hear Ing’s ‘Chan Yang Yoo’ and Um’s ‘Rak Muang Thai Mai Tai Rok’,” says the band’s frontman Arnon “Poo” Saisangchan.

“I think that fans from that era have longer memories than the younger generation. Back then, people would listen to the entire album from first track to last and so were able to appreciate and understand the story and concept behind it. Today, they simply click on the song and move to another one before it’s even finished,” Rang laments, adding that his special guest for Saturday’s show is his daughter, Nong Metal.

Saturday will also mark the first time the Kai-Jo Brothers will be back on stage since the death of their songwriter-guitarist-singer and founder Adisorn Kingpayom in 2011.

“It is a reunion of Kai-Jo Brothers’ original members. I’m excited about performing on the same stage as my favourite artists, especially Rang Rockestra. I saw his concert in Songkhla. For Blackhead, I was a director on their music video of Blackhead before joining the reggae band,” Sorapan Kingpayom says.

Joining them on stage will be medical laboratory technologist and artist Morlab Panda and film director Yangyong Kuruaungkoul, whose movie “2538 Alter Ma Jeeb” was inspired by the ’80s.

“The first cassette tape I bought was Boyscout’s album. I remember rewinding the tape with a pen and pasting scotch tape on the torn bit,” Morlab Pan laughs.

“It was my first movie and I wanted to make a film about myself and the period I grew up in. Young people today are very different and have everything at their fingertips. The movie, which sees the main character travel back in time to the alternative era, took us back to the charms of using a pager or the ubiquitous photo sticker. It’s set in 2538 or 1995, which was the beginning of alternative music scene and features songs in each of the scenes,” said Yanyong.

Molam goes global: Isaan beats under spotlight at FCCT on Wednesday

music July 01, 2019 17:17

By The Nation

Music scholars and culture experts will explore Molam’s journey from traditional Isaan folk music to the world stage at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand on Wednesday.

The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band has been treating Western ears during tours to Europe in recent years and returns east this month for a show at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan.

Meanwhile fellow molam outfit Khun Narin’s Electric Phin has landed itself a record deal with a US-based label.

Closer to home, the Jim Thompson Farm’s Molam Mobile Bus is on a musical tour of the Kingdom and plans are afoot to steer it abroad.

With its strong beats, rhythmic tunes and soulful lyrics molam has been the sound track for village festivals and rituals, weddings, temple fairs and even for healing the sick for centuries.

Rooted in temple sermons, the music is a narrative folk art preformed by mo-lam (master singers) backed by the khaen (bamboo-reed mouth organ) as well as ching (temple bells), the phin (lute) and the sor (fiddle).

Traditional forms of molam transformed as Thailand modernised from the 1950s onward, and ensembles and bands began to use Western instruments and arrangements.

Innovations such as dramatic and popular forms were created and the genre was recorded and distributed as “pop music”.

These days traditional forms of molam exist side by side with popular styles that have evolved in step with the dynamic changes in Thai society.

Experts will gather at the FCCT in Bangkok to play and discuss different styles of this iconic musical form, pondering its ongoing evolution and success.

On the panel will be: Dr Jarernchai Chonpairot, a music specialist at the College of Music, Mahasarakham University; Dr Gridthiya Gaweewong, the artistic director of the Jim Thompson Art Centre; Arthit Mulsarn, the curator for the Jim Thompson Mobile Molam Bus Project; Viraya Sawangchot, a specialist in popular music and senior fellow with the Social Enterprise Leadership Centre; and DJ Maft Sai, the owner of Zudrangma Records, Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band.

The panel moderator will be John Clewley, the Bangkok Post’s World Beat columnist, correspondent/photographer for Songlines (UK) magazine and contributor to the Rough Guide to World Music.

The discusion is held from 7pm to 9pm. Get tickets at http://www.fcctthai.com

Rockers Alexandros come to town

music June 28, 2019 08:50

By THE NATION

Japanese rockers Alexandros make their Thai debut this Sunday (June 30) in the concert “Sleepless in Bangkok” at Moon Star Studio 1 starting at 5pm.

The J-rock quartet, featuring Yoohei Kawakami on vocals, Hiroyuki Isobe on bass, Masaki Shirai on guitar and Satoyasu Shomura on drums, kicked off their “Sleepless in Japan” tour before heading to China and are slated to play in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and South Korea.

Their latest album and the inspiration for this tour, “Sleepless in Brooklyn”, features “Arpeggio” and “Your Song” that are used as the insert and theme song for PlayStation 4’s upcoming game, “Project Judge” or “Judge Eyes: Shinigami no Yuigon” starring top Asian star Takuya Kimura.

Alexandros’s “Pray” is the official theme song for the Japanese version of “Godzilla: King of the Monsters”. The song is described as a “rock ballad illustrating the notions of human love” which befittingly reflects what emotional strengths the protagonists need when facing the hardships that the film’s plot presents them.

“Mosquito Bite” and “Milk” are the theme songs for the “Weekly Shonen Jump” anime adapation of film “Bleach” featuring Miyavi as Byakuya Kuchiki. The film will be out in Japan on July 20.

Back in 2010, the Japanese rock band debuted as Champagne and was quickly recognised as one of the up-and-comers of Japan’s indie music scene. By 2013, they’d scored a trio of Top 20 hits: “Forever Young”, “Run Away”, and “starrrrrrr” in collaboration with GEROCK.

The following year, the quartet changed their name to Alexandros and made a second debut in 2015 with ALXD, their first album after signing with major label Universal Music Japan. The electric “Wataridori” was the first single and amassed more than 72 million views on YouTube.

The band won Best New Artist at the 2016 Japan Gold Disc Awards, Best Rock Artist at the 2016 Space Shower Awards, and took home the Best Rock Video award at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards Japan for the technotinged “Swan”.

The popular girl group from South Korea puts on a stunning show in Bangkok

Now on their first world tour, Twice, the much-loved girl group from South Korea, made a stop in Thailand last Saturday night and blew away their fans – known as Onces – with a truly amazing concert.

Thousands of Onces filed into Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani to find the girls were truly honouring their promise to return soon not just with a full-scale concert but also with a better show. Held at a bigger venue, their third concert in Thailand dubbed “TwiceLights” featured greater vibes, more stunning effects, and a smoother flow thanks largely to the collaboration between Thailand’s Four One One Entertainment (411ent) and South Korea’s JYP Entertainment.

Twice perform “Signal” on stage.

The concert started at 6pm sharp with a video clip showing a prism breaking into colourful beams. Black was the first colour to take over the stage, as all nine singers appeared in black attire for their opening song. Breaking away from their usual image of being “lovely”, Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Jihyo, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, Sana, Mina, Momo and Tzuyu (the first five are South Koreans, the next three Japanese while the last hails from Taiwan) looked cool as they served up “Stuck in My Head” from their latest album “Fancy” to their fans.

The mood continued with all-time favourites “Cheer Up” and “Touchdown”.

The nine goddesses then officially greeted their fans. Though speaking mainly via an interpreter, the girls also came up with a few Thai words, shouting out “Sawasdee kha. We are Twice”.

Each of the nine singers then greeted her supporters, with Chaeyoung concluding that Onces should check out the various colours that she and her bandmates would be bringing to the show.

Sana then asked for applause and cheers before the girls swung into “BDZ” and “Yes or Yes” fol¬lowed by “I want you back” and super hit “Dance the night away”.

Jeongyeon can’t hold back the tears as she sings “You in My Heart.”

Another video clip then lit up the giant screens, revealing that it was time for ‘White’. And so, when the girls returned to the stage, they were all dressed up like princesses in snowy gowns. This time, the nine formed a big circle on the centre stage and crooned “After Moon”. It was a clever bit of staging as no matter where fans were sitting in the hall, they had at least one of the supergroup facing them.

Jeonhyeon told the crowd that the next song – “You in my heart” was dedicated to all Onces, a comment that drew loud cheers.

Fans’ hearts grew even fonder when during the next song “Sunset”, their favourite singers walked around the hall getting up close and cosy with the thousands of Onces.

And then it was time for yet another clip that hinted Red would soon reign. And sure enough, Twice quickly reappeared in red costumes, performing “Heart Shaker”, “Strawberry” and “Woohoo”.

Bigger thrills followed, as  Dahyun, Sana and Tzuyu still wearing their short red dresses performed a sexy dance during their rendition of Beyonce’s “Dance for You”.

Blue-clad Momo and Jihyo competed for the cheers as they made powerful dance moves in their cover of Taemin’s “Goodbye”.

Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Mina and  Chaeyoung then paraded out in white, performing Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” to loud applause.

Back on stage after another quick break, this time in colourful attire, the girls sang “Likey” before inviting fans to sing along to “What is Love” with the lines appearing karaoke-style on the screen to make things easier and fun.

Twice then gathered at the centre of the stage and split into the same three groups as earlier in the show. In this segment, they answered questions about how they created their shows. Tzuyu, fans learnt, had encouraged Sana and Dahyun to join her sexy-dance creation.

The girls continued to share their feelings with fans before performing “Like Ooh Ahh” and “TT” while moving around the hall to wave at and entertain their fans. They closed out the session with “Fancy” and disappeared from the stage.

Of course, no concert is complete without an encore but this time, the Onces had to complete a series of missions to bring the girls back.

Twice closed out their concert with “Knock Knock”.

The quests added fun to the concert because they allowed an all-too-rare opportunity for direct participation. The fans eagerly competed with each other to catch the attention of camera staff in the hope that they would be chosen as the persons invited to the missions. And because the concert was packed with true fans, all the missions such as forming a heart with one’s body to resonate with “Heart Shaker” were quickly accomplished.
