Excitement was high in the GSB Stadium 29 in Nonthaburi province north of Bangkok last weekend as girl groups Sao Sao Sao and Triumphs Kingdom and their fans reunited for the soldout “Present Moment in Time” concert.

Sao Sao Sao, who shot to fame in the 1980s, were in fine form, joking about their advancing years with an audience of a similar age and raising lots of laughs.

’80s trio Sao Sao Sao again shows they’ve got what it takes.

The trio, which features 54-year-olds Saowaluk “Amp” Leelaboot and Orawan “Pum” Yenpoonsuk and 51-year-old Patcharida “Maem” Wattana, both sounded and looked considerably younger thanks to wellfitting outfits and flattering makeup.

The ladies performed six songs –their own hits and some covers – in their first set, which was followed by a four-number sequence from ’90s favourites Triumphs Kingdom. The concert organisers thoughtfully posted the lyrics up on the big screen enabling the audience to sing along throughout.

Sao Sao Sao shot to fame in 1983 with many hits including “Pratoo Jai” and went on to release 10 albums over the next seven years followed by nine special records. They are regarded to this day the first girl band in Thailand’s music industry, and one of the most successful.

Next up on stage was Triumphs Kingdom featuring Surattanavee “Beau” Suviporn and Kornpassorn “Joyce” Ratanameathanont, both 38. They made an equally solid impression on fans, drawing loud cheers and long applause for such megahits as “Handkerchief” and “Love Love Love”.

The duo, a favourite with teenagers at the end of the ’90s, earned a reputation not just for their bubble gum pop but also for their signature camisole tops, which were considered highly provocative at the time. TK released four albums between 1999 and 2001, and a few singles. Beau attempted a solo comeback in 2006 but had little success.

Last week’s gig wasn’t an entirely female show, with the ladies bringing along actor/singer Prama “Panjan” Imanotai to sing a few covers and join a medley with Sao Sao Sao. The second guest was none other than upandcoming star Sirichada “Millie” Ruamrudeekul, who accompanied Pannee on “Until Now” and brought the first half of the concert to a close.

Millie recently turned down an offer to join icon group BNK48, choosing instead to go solo with the Mono Music Gelato label, a subsidiary of the Mono 29 TV Channel, which co-hosted the concert with Government Savings Bank.

The university sophomore is known for her singing and instrumental talents and is equally at ease on the piano, drums, guitar and ukulele. She performed her single “Me” before handing over to Sao Sao Sao to launch the second part of the show.

Triumphs Kingdom were next up and brought the crowd to its feet with “Don’t Get Me Wrong” and “Macho”.

Sao Sao Sao then returned to stage for an eight-song sequence that included Blondie’s “One Way Or Another” before joining up with Triumphs Kingdon for a closing medley featuring “Rak Khue Fan Pai”.

Dunk Phunkorn, one of Thailand’s most successful pop stars in the late 1990s and early 2000s – his self-titled debut album sold more than a million copies – has surprised the modern mainstream audience with a new “fashion music” sound and a dapper new look.

“Fashion has always fascinated me,” he says amid raves for the single “I Want Your Fashion”.

“I got the chance to work with Clinton Sparks. I told him about my dream, my vision and my goal, but mainly I told him my music must have a feelgood vibe. I also wanted him to help plan my show.”

Dressed for success, Dunk wears a strawberry-print Gucci sweatshirt and matching sneakers with black shorts.

Sparks is a DJ-producer-singer-songwriter, as well as a radio and television personality, from Boston in the US. He was nominated for a Grammy for producing Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way”, won a BMI award for writing Pitbull’s “Shut It Down” and shared an ASCAP award with DJ Snake.

Sparks has also written or produced songs for Akon, Ludacris, 2 Chainz, Ty Dolla Sign, Lil Uzi Vert and Big Sean and released his own album “Maybe You Been Brainwashed” in 2005 and the EP “ICONoclast” in 2014.

So he was an apt choice for Dunk, who’s keen to “go inter” in a big way.

The singer models Joyce, a Hong Kong street brand, with a silver Chanel necklace and leather Gucci platform sneakers.

Dunk signed him up to produce his EP “Runway Thriller”, which includes the singles “I Want Your Fashion” and “Runway”, the latter featuring American rapper Busta Rhymes. Universal Music Thailand is handling distribution.

Dunk, whose real name is Phunkorn Boonyachinda, is 40 now. He’s making time to chat exclusively with The Nation at his house on Bangkok’s Sukhumvit Road.

“Music should make people happy,” he says. “It should be there for anyone with a broken heart. No matter how strong the lyrics, there has to be a good meaning.

“Clinton asked me what I enjoyed in life and I told him I’m a shopaholic. Shopping helps relieve my stress. At the time I was always carrying a Gucci bag.”

Guy loves his Gucci.

“The five songs on the EP are all are related to fashion, and in one of them I namedrop Michael Jackson and ‘Thriller’,” says Dunk, lounging on a semicircular sofa.

“Clinton wanted ‘I Want Your Fashion’ to be the opening track because it will really help us mount a beautiful show. I was surprised at first that he got me speaking as well as singing on the track, but in fact speaking has its own melody.

“‘I Want Your Fashion’ is like sexual desire or lust. When we love someone, we want all of them. ‘I want your fashion, I want your animal.’ The ‘animal’ represents sexual arousal. And the beat of the music is the sound of the runway,” he explains.

At the single’s launch, reporters and fans were frankly stunned, first by Dunk’s stylish looks in the accompanying music video and then when he showed up live inside a mesh ball and stepped out onto a catwalk to put on a show.

Leslie Kee, a Singaporean photographer based in Japan, directed the video. He was the first Asian photographer to contribute to Vogue magazine when its Asian edition was introduced. His work has also been seen in GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, Esquire and Rolling Stone.

Dunk says he made careful choices about every aspect of his new incarnation and is “proud that foreigners appreciate my work”.

“The first two singles illustrate my identity. The first is like an overture and the second features Busta Rhymes. The music video will be filmed in July. That will really be the opening track of my EP.

“People might not understand what the video’s about, but actually it’s about the truth of life – the unavoidable cycle of birth, old age, sickness and death. It opens with me standing among a group of dancers who once performed on Madonna’s ‘Bambi’.

“Then I’m in a red costume and wig, in a spacecraft coming to Earth to fight the lust of humans, especially men. I’m in a warrior costume to fight this lust. Leslie was thinking of both of weddings and funerals with the opening sound of an organ.”

Dunk, who’s celebrating his 20th anniversary in show business and has never been off the A-list at Universal Music Thailand, expects to tour abroad after the EP’s release sometime in the coming months.

“I’m not sure how successful it will be because it’s like starting over from zero,” he says. “I don’t want to have high hopes, with so many new artists coming out these days, but I’ll do my best and most importantly be myself.

“I would love it if Thais focus on my music more than my fashion. It’s just a coincidence that I’m a singer who has a strong passion for fashion.”

She’ll be singing covers of much-loved tunes by such world-famous artists such as Barbra Streisand, Carole King, Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart, Diana Krall, Michael Buble and Motown. Nop Phonchamni is her guest.

The World’s leading opera singer Jose Carreras accompanied by Irish soprano Celine Byrne will bring down the curtain on the six-week long Bangkok’s 21st International Festival of Dance & Music on October 23.

An integral member of the memorable Three Tenors, Carreras along with Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo mesmerised the world by introducing the world of opera to a whole new generation. Herbert von Karajan called Carreras the most powerful embodiment of Don Jose [in Carmen] stating that he was “the Don Jose I had always dreamed of”.

Born in Barcelona, Carreras was mesmerised by opera at age six when he saw Mario Lanza perform in the movie “The Great Caruso”. At 11 he sang a Verdi aria on national radio. He has reportedly sung more than 60 Verdi and Puccini operas and was the star of the Franco Zeffirelli production “La Boheme”.

He has performed at four Fifa World Cup Finals including at the Dodger Stadium, at the Barcelona Olympics and at the world’s most prestigious opera theatres and festivals, including La Scala in Milan, New York Metropolitan Opera House, and London’s Royal Opera House.

And now at 72, he is contemplating giving up the stage to focus on his Leukaemia Foundation. His appearance in Bangkok is one of the stops on his farewell global concert tour.

Accompanying him in Bangkok is Ireland’s foremost opera singer, the internationally acclaimed soprano Celine Byrne who has frequently appeared on opera stages across Europe and USA, as well as China, Russia and Mexico. A vivacious artiste, she has sung a variety of opera roles and is the first-prize winner of the prestigious Maria Callas Grand Prix.

Byrne entered the opera world late, discovering opera only at 18 when working in Italy as an au pair. Inspired, she took singing lessons and is today a leading star (her Carnegie Hall debut was in 2007). A career highlight for Byrne was performing for Pope Francis along with Andrea Bocelli in Dublin during the papal visit to Ireland.

Also adding heft to the Bangkok performance is the presence of conductor David Gimenez whose extraordinary understanding of the voice has seen him perform with leading singers in the world, and with orchestras like TeatroallaScala, Vienna Staatsoper and Royal Opera House Covent Garden.

So what can the audience expect? In brief, an exciting mix of operatic highlights mixed with popular music and pop hits.

In an interview to The Sydney Morning Herald Carreras described his thought process, “I am constantly thinking about what I’m doing [when performing] but at the same time it comes naturally. It is difficult to explain. The soul produces the emotion. And the brain is telling the emotions where they have to go. And it is something that comes together, in the song.”

It’s a musician’s dream – rehearse alongside a full orchestra, but in your own living room.

And the immersive experience is possible because, yes, there’s an app for that, courtesy of a French startup, Digital Music Solutions.

“NomadPlay” is all down to an algorithm which separates out the sound components of a score to remove any instrument as desired, fading out an oboe or piano part for instance, and allowing the home musician to join the fray.

“When we were young we all practised with records to get the impression we were playing along with the Vienna or Berlin philharmonic. That was very gratifying,” says internationally renowned French violinist Renaud Capucon, 43.

“But it was a nightmare when our parents heard us play because it just wasn’t the same thing!”

Now, thanks to the app, “you’re accompanied by an orchestra all on your own in your room – it’s extraordinary.”

Clothilde Chalot and Hannelore Guittet started Digital Music Solutions in Paris five years ago.

Their app can be downloaded for free on a phone or tablet and offers a catalogue of albums, ranging from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony to Schubert’s Fantasia in F Minor.

Amateurs and professionals buy the pieces for between five and 20 euros (Bt175 and Bt700), Capucon, the app’s “ambassador,” gave a demonstration of its capabilities at the Festival de Paques in the southern town of Aixen-Provence in April.

Taking Ravel’s string quartet, he clicked on the violin symbol to eliminate the sound of the part, before accompanying the piece with his own instrument.

The concept is similar to that of karaoke, where fans grab the mic to provide their own vocals to the original backing track.

Yet the NomadPlay app is more elaborate.

French violinist Renaud Capucon practices with the new application “NomadPlay”, created by the French startup Digital Music Solutions, which can replace virtually every orchestral musician.

First off, you can search by level – beginner, intermediate, experienced or expert – or by instrument, as well as by composer.

You can increase or slow down the tempo, repeat a bar or part of a bar and even annotate the score.

Capucon says the app is brimming with educational promise as it can help budding musicians “learn a work more quickly with this harmonic help.”

For professionals such as himself, the system offers a “huge time gain” as “when finally you practise with the others, you already have the reflexes”.

He does concede, however, that the app per se will not transform the user into a musical genius.

“It’s not going to turn you into a (Yehudi) Menuhin or (Mstislav) Rostropovich”.

Indeed “if the pupil only works with the app you could say it’s dangerous… but from the point of view of speeding up the job, it is very positive,” Capucon adds.

For Marc Bourreau, a teacher and lecturer at engineering college Telecom ParisTech, applications dedicated to music, be it for listening, mixing or editing, have become ever more sophisticated.

“This digitally-pushed evolution eliminated the frontier between creator/artist and consumer,” he says.

In an age where “children grow up with their tablets you have to give music this technological and entertaining side to spark their interest,” adds Dominique Bluzet, executive director at the Festival de Paques.

Bluzet says concerts these days are no longer the only way to introduce young people to music.

NomadPlay is already working with the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, National Orchestra of France’s Ile de France region around Paris and their Rouen-Normandy equivalent.

It hopes to extend its repertoire by September to include scores played by a broader range of ensembles.

“We shall be able to try out the tempo of different conductors (and offer) preparation which affords musicians greater flexibility,” Capucon enthuses.

Chalot says the app can offer discs a second life.

“We wanted to find a new economic model for recorded music which has been around for 100 years,” adds the 38-year-old, who has worked at the Paris Opera and the Rouen-Normandy Opera.

“We tell independent and major labels that ‘this is also a way of getting your artists known’,” said Chalot.

Around a dozen people worked on the app, whose creation was partly funded by the CMCIC Innovation investment fund and French culture ministry.

“The day we ran the first tests I cried. It was magnificent,” Chalot recalls.

To date, the catalogue is purely classical music but the company says it is in talks with independent pop and rock producers as it looks to “open up to all genres.”

He will be the main act after MD Mochio, DJ Golf Indro, DJ Ethemiz, Triple Threat and Sugar Babes.

Nichkhun Horvejkul, the sole Thai member of South Korea’s popular boy band 2PM, will make his debut solo concert, titled “Home”, at Chaeng Wattana Hall on the fifth floor of Central Chaeng Wattana on July 27 at 6pm.

Nichkhun released his debut solo album “Me”, the end of last year. It features such tracks as “Lucky Charm” as well as the English & Korean versions of “Umbrella”.
