Luxury redefined

Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo has completed a comprehensive renovation of its guestrooms and suites bringing a whole new meaning to luxury.

The makeover of all 179 spacious guestrooms and suites draws on Japan’s rich culture and provides guests with a strong sense of place.

Japanese craftmanship has been combined with the latest technology to ensure a thoroughly contemporary Japanese experience. Renowned textile designer Reiko Sudo and art director Ryu Kosaka have transformed the guestrooms and suites, and built on the existing woods and water interior design theme. Jeffrey A Wilkes served as principal interior designer for the Presidential Suite, which is the largest and most luxurious suite in the hotel.

Bespoke fabrics and furnishings representing the woodlands and the changing seasons have been incorporated throughout, with autumn leaf colours of gold, orange and purple and blooming springtime wisteria and sakura patterns embroidered onto headboards.

All accommodation has also been equipped with the latest Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), which allows for content to be viewed on both Apple and Android devices on 49-77 inch screens, offering high-quality picture and sound.

To honour the hotel’s location in Nihonbashi, an area that is closely connected to the culture of the Kimono, Sudo has used locally produced fabrics in all suite and guestroom interiors.

For the Grand Room, contemporary Japanese style and materials abound range from an embroidered headboard depicting weeping cherry blossoms to a light fixture made from bamboo strings. Curvaceous lines, such as the round table and curved back for the chaise longue, create a welcoming, approachable atmosphere.

Featuring the original Flower Shower textile pattern on furnishings, such as the sofa and chairs in the living room, the hotel’s restyled suites are designed to conjure up thoughts of blissful moments with flowers. A wisteria in full bloom is embroidered onto each headboard, while each bedside chest is crafted with wood from the Paulownia tree.

A silver-leaf round table and gold-leaf embossed cabinet brighten the living room, while the carpet blends the look of Japanese ink and brush work with a motif of clouds and gentle breezes, a nod to the extensive views of Tokyo that can be enjoyed from the hotel’s suites. Another quintessentially Japanese highlight are lampshades inspired by the Andon, a traditional Japanese lamp. Made from washi paper, these have been placed in asymmetrical positions throughout each bedroom, a distinctive characteristic of Japanese design and another example of the attention to detail paid by the designers.

Inspired by gardens and bonsai, the Presidential Suite is a beautiful reference to nature, conjuring a feeling of walking in a park, including specially commissioned photographic wall artwork depicting inspirational treescapes from Tokyo’s parks.

Featuring an abundance of natural daylight and several distinctive seating areas, the living room is the perfect spot for enjoying cocktails and there is a separate library. The nature-theme continues in the dining room, which is dressed with a photographic mural depicting sun shining through the tree branches from one of Tokyo’s stunning parks. The dining room’s ceiling light resembles the sun and its cabinets are decorated with motifs of birds, butterflies and plants.

The bedroom ceiling is created to give the illusion of looking at the sky through trees, while its carpet design evokes the world of Origami. Offering sweeping views across Tokyo, the bathroom is equipped with a bathtub that has built-in fibre optic lighting that turns the bathwater into a brilliant, brimming bowl of colour. When visible, the splendour of Mount Fuji can be viewed from any part of the Presidential Suite.

Following the attack on its premises last month, dusit D2 Nairobi has announced it will reopen in June and resume its function as a major business, leisure and social hub with new dining concepts and an enhanced design.

The hotel is situated in the 14 Riverside Complex in Kenya’s exclusive Westlands neighbourhood , which is a major commercial hub and home to restaurants, shops and international offices.

The complex was targeted in an act of terror on January 15 which claimed the lives of 21 innocent people, including four fulltime employees and two contract security staff of the hotel. No guests were harmed in the attack.

Demonstrating the resilience of the local community, the complex has already sprung back into action with tenants and business owners returning to help to beautify the area. The office buildings reopened on January 28 with additional security measures bolstering the internationally certified systems and procedures the complex already has in place.

dusitD2 Nairobi, which has been temporarily closed since the incident, is located at the far end of the project in a private location away from the main entrance. First opened in October 2014, the hotel is known for its worldclass facilities, high standards of service, and status as a leading venue for MICE business and social and private events.

“The spirit of determination that runs through the entire 14 Riverside community is heartening to see, and the support from everyone has been, and continues to be, incredible. This positive energy is driving us as we prepare the hotel to delight guests and visitors once more with delightful service, impressive design, and safe and comfortable surroundings for people to socialise, stay and conduct business,” said Michael Metaxas, general manager of dusitD2 Nairobi.

Recognised as a major facilitator of business in Nairobi, the management and staff of dusitD2 Nairobi are determined to reopen the hotel as a beacon of comfort, convenience and safety so the 14 Riverside community can thrive once again.

“While we are still deeply affected by the recent events at the 14 Riverside complex, morale is high and everyone is pulling together to create a special return for the hotel. As ever, the safety and wellbeing of our guests and employees remain our priority, and we will continue to have rigorous security procedures in place that contribute to the high levels of comfort and care for which we are known worldwide,” said Lim Boon Kwee, chief operating officer of Dusit International.

Romance is in the air and it’s clear many loved-up travellers are too as they head to Bangkok this February for Valentine’s Day.

Advanced booking data from Airbnb, the leading peopletopeople travel platform, shows that Bangkok is the tenth most popular Valentine’s Day destination in the world this year.

Bangkok is the only Asian city in the top 10. Christchurch in New Zealand is in top spot followed by Los Angeles and another Kiwi city – Queenstown in third place. Paris is fourth and Auckland fifth. London follows in No 6 and Miami (US) the seventh place. Another two cities in New Zealand – Twizel and West Coast  are eighth and ninth with Bangkok rounding out the first 10.

Airbnb says that the reason why Bangkok is in the top ten list can be put down to the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s proactive promotion of Thailand for weddings, honeymooners and female travellers, cornerstones of the agency’s “Amazing Thailand’s Open to the New Shades” campaign launched last year.

While Valentine’s Day is traditionally considered a time for couples travel, Airbnb data reveals a new trend in the growth of solo travel. Advanced booking data for 2019 shows that people travelling solo on Valentine’s Day this year has increased 98 per cent year-on-year, globally, with Paris being the most booked destination by solo Airbnb travellers.

That’s followed by Los Angeles, London, New York and San Francisco with Bangkok coming in as the sixth most popular Valentine’s Day destination in the world for solo travellers having seen almost 72 per cent growth in solo bookings from 2018 to 2019.

There’s a clear trend of more travellers wanting a more meaningful travel experience, which includes a sustainable form of travelling to secondary provinces around Thailand. This benefits local communities who do not otherwise see the tourist dollar. This is largely influenced by popular Thai TV dramas.

Following the successful first series of Channel 3’s “Love Destiny” (“Buppesannivas”), travel to Ayutthaya has spiked and become one of Airbnb’s fastest growing secondary destinations in Thailand as travellers look to immerse themselves in the local historical and cultural sites. Airbnb Experiences around Thai local culture are more popular than ever, where the platform sees hospitality entrepreneurs wanting to share an authentic side of Thailand.

The Thana City Country Club just got even more inviting with the addition of an Eastin Resort

COMPLETE WITH a striking 18-hole golf course designed by the great Greg Norman, the 2,000-rai Thana City Country Club sports-and-leisure complex now has the Eastin Thana City Resort Bangkok at its entrance.

Opened last month, Thailand’s first Eastin Resort aims to match the success of the Eastin Ashta Resort Canggu Bali in Indonesia and Eastin Grand Resort Phu Quoc in Vietnam.

Golfers, whether travelling with their families or not, and short-hop vacationers can enjoy a marvellous holiday amid comfortable accommodations and five-star hospitality at affordable prices.

A 10-minute drive from Suvarnabhumi Airport, the hotel is at Bang Na-Trat Road Kilometre 14 and boasts a contemporary design that blends in beautifully with the green surroundings.

It has 194 rooms and suites ranging from 32 to 96 square metres. The options include a superior room, a one-bedroom suite and a two-bed room suite.

“We saw the potential for sports tourism in Thailand and added the Eastin Resort to accommodate guests,” says Sorasa Phungsupan, assistant public relations director at Thana City.

“We want to be a one-stop leisure spot where sport lovers, families and vacationers can come and enjoy fun activities designed for all ages and lifestyle.”

Sorasa noted that Thana City has been a popular attraction for the sporty crowd for 25 years, drawing guests from Japan and South Korea as well.

“In 2017 we collaborated with Greg Norman, ‘the Great White Shark’, to build a world-class 18-hole championship golf course.

“We expanded the course from 6,800 to 7,008 yards and enhanced it with new greens, tee-off areas and landscaping to make it more challenging for players. We added an advanced floodlight system so you can keep playing until late evening. And we have a traffic-management system to ensure that everyone can finish their 18 holes within four and a half hours.”

The Eastin offers “Value for all Occasions” that lets guests check in at a time convenient for them with the assurance that the room will be ready. Children up to 16 can stay for free. Sign up for “Flexi Breakie” and you can eat breakfast as late as 11.30am, allowing for a longer snooze.

The resort has its own saltwater freeform swimming pool and a large fitness centre with a wide selection of state-of-the-art equipment and classes conducted by professionals.

I stayed a night in a 64-square-metre, high-ceiling one-bedroom suite that felt homey and relaxing with its earth tones and wooden furniture. It had free Wi-Fi Internet access and a dining area with pantry and a three-seat dining table, microwave, refrigerator, tableware and sink.

I loved lounging on the comfy sofa bed surfing the foreign satellite channels on TV.

The bedroom, spacious and convenient, had a king-size bed with USB hubs in the headboard and a work desk alongside an LCD TV and fully stocked mini-bar.

Inside the walk-in closet were a safe, umbrellas and slippers. There’s also a large separate shower, a wash basin with hairdryer and all the amenities you need and a separate toilet accessible from both dining area and bedroom. The private balcony afforded great views of the sunset beyond the vast greenery of the golf course.

The hotel restaurant is called Splash and has a pool terrace. It does a nice breakfast buffet of Thai and American choices and has a salad bar, coffee and juice counter and a dim sum corner where you can get Chinese fried dough and dumplings with soy milk.

During the day, for a little extra cash, you can get access to the clay tennis courts, basketball and volleyball court, futsal field and squash court. There’s also a “We Play” playground for kids to jump around in a ball pit or on trampolines and create art in a craft corner.
