Shoprite LPGA Classic 54-hole leader Reid in familiar position

Oct 04. 2020

It’s déjà vu for Mel Reid. She finds herself in the same position entering the final round of the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer as two weeks ago at the Cambia Portland Classic: the 54-hole leader.

SHOPRITE LPGA CLASSIC 54-HOLE LEADER REID IN FAMILIAR POSITION

This time, she holds a one-shot advantage on the Bay Course at Seaview, A Dolce Hotel, at 15-under par overall, rather than a two-stroke margin.

“We reflected on it a lot,” said Reid, who ended in a tie for fifth at the Cambia Portland Classic. “I spoke to [my psychologist] Howard [Falco] about it quite a lot last week. I’m a pretty quick player and it kind of makes me quick on my swing. I’ll take my time tomorrow, I think. That is basically what we took away.”

Looking to become a Rolex First-Time winner, Reid is trailed closely by a pair of individuals hoping to do the same in Jennifer Kupcho and Jennifer Song. Both competitors sit 14-under overall after each fired a bogey-free 65 with six birdies on moving day in Galloway, N.J. Their 54-hole score of 199 also sets a career-best for each on the LPGA Tour.

Holding down the fort in solo fourth position is 36-hole leader Nasa Hataoka. She managed a 1-under 70 on the afternoon thanks to a closing birdie on the par-5 18th. The 21-year-old is -12 and three back of the lead. She will lead the penultimate pairing off No. 1 tee tomorrow at 10:59 a.m. EDT, joined by Kelly Tan and Ryann O’Toole, another duo both in search of their first LPGA title.

“In today’s round, putts didn’t go in so I couldn’t get into the flow of things, but I didn’t feel like I played that badly ,” said Hataoka, who hopes to join 2010 champion Ai Miyazato as the only Japanese players to win the ShopRite LPGA Classic. “I felt like my speed on the greens was a little off; I was on my line but came up short, so I’ll work on that. I’ll keep playing aggressively and try to make all the birdies.”

Canadian star Brooke Henderson fired a 6-under 65 on moving day to move from a tie for 30th into solo seventh at -10. Six players are six shots back at 9-under overall including most recent LPGA Tour winner, Georgia Hall. Defending champion Lexi Thompson is tied for 22nd with six others at -6.

WITH A WIN

Mel ReidJennifer SongJennifer KupchoRyann O’Toole and Kelly Tan would all become a Rolex First-Time Winner, the second of the 2020 LPGA Tour season joining Madelene Sagstrom (Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio)

The $195,000 winner’s check would give Reid to $873,941 in career earnings

Kupcho would become the youngest winner on the LPGA Tour in 2020 at 23 years, 4 months and 20 days

Song would become the second LPGA Tour winner in 2020 who played collegiately at the University of Southern California, joining Sophia Popov (AIG Women’s Open)

It would be the first LPGA Tour title for Song in her 220th career start on the LPGA Tour

Nasa Hataoka would earn her fourth career LPGA Tour victory and first since the 2019 Kia Classic

Hataoka would join 2010 champion Ai Miyazato as the only Japanese players to win the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer

It would be the first professional win for Tan since the 2019 Florida’s Natural Charity Classic, her maiden win on the Symetra Tour

The $195,000 winner’s check would give O’Toole $2,187,204 in career earnings, making her the 165th player in LPGA Tour history to surpass the $2 million threshold

REID ON THE BRINK (AGAIN) OF FIRST WIN

A three-time Solheim Cup Team Europe member, Mel Reid has now fired under par in nine of her last 10 rounds, and 37 straight holes of bogey-free golf in the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer has her on the brink of her first LPGA Tour victory, once again.

“Hopefully I have left a bit out there for tomorrow,” said Reid, who also held the 54-hole lead at Cambia Portland Classic. “Great opportunity to get it done and going to keep doing the same thing.

“I was pretty disappointed the way I handled Portland. I felt like it was in my hands, really. It’s a little bit different here. I feel like girls are going to still shoot low tomorrow. I’ve got to play well to get my hands on that trophy.”

Reid credits the work she has done with her psychologist Howard Falco as instrumental in her approach to the game both on and off the course. She also realizes the impact that this moment could have on her career.

“I started working with him before the [AIG Women’s] Open, we just clicked,” said Reid, who will head off No. 1 tee tomorrow at 11:10 a.m. EDT. “He’s been very different to any psychologist I’ve ever had. I am a quick player and I can get very, very quick. Too quick. When I’m at home, I don’t even take practice swings. I did that a couple weeks ago in Portland. Howard has understood me very well, quickly.

“It would be life changing, to be an established winner on the LPGA against the best in the world. It changes your career and your life. No matter what anyone can say, you’ve won on the LPGA.”

JENNIFERSQUARED TO TAKE ON FINAL GROUPING TOMORROW

Two bogey-free 65s. Two rounds with six birdies each. Two Jennifers, both looking for their first win on the LPGA Tour.

Jennifer Song and Jennifer Kupcho made the most of moving day at ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer. Both played their way into tomorrow’s final grouping and sit in a tie for second at -14 overall, one shot off Mel Reid’s 54-hole lead.

For Song, this is the second time since the season resumed play that she’ll be chasing the lead from the final group. At the Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open, Song started the last day two shots off the lead, and ultimately ended in a tie for seventh.

“I like to be in contention, but I like to stay behind so I can catch the leaders going into the final round. So I’m exactly where I want to be,” said Song. “It would be awesome to go home with a victory. To be honest, nothing is done until I finish that final putt in the final round so I’m not really thinking about that. I’m just going to focus on my game.”

Kupcho played in Galloway, N.J., for the first time in 2019, her second event as a professional on the LPGA Tour. She finished in a tie for 43rd and by the end of her rookie year, earned three top five finishes including a tie for second result at The Evian Championship. She’s made some adjustments since her last appearance at Seaview, but first and foremost on the agenda for tomorrow is to take care of her body.

“I’m having a little bit of back issues this tournament, so working on that and just going out and playing the best I can,” said Kupcho. “I came out here not knowing if I could play, I was in so much pain. Luckily, I was able to fight through and really focus on making every swing the best that I can. I’m going to just go out and do that tomorrow.”

RYANN O’TOOLE IN THE HUNT FOR HER FIRST LPGA TITLE

After a 7-under 64 on the first day of the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer, Ryann O’Toole was a little disappointed in her even-par round on Friday. Finding the positives where she could, O’Toole canceled out three bogeys on the scorecard with seven birdies for a third-round 65 to reach -11 overall, four shots back of lead in Atlantic County.

“I would love to shoot 7-under every round, but I feel like all of us strive for that and it doesn’t happen,” said O’Toole. “Just seeing the consistency this week and it wasn’t just a fluke the first round feels good. I see consistency as far as irons, giving myself birdie opportunities, starting to putt on my lines. So, yeah, I feel like I’m in a good place. Trying to get into next week as best as I can, keep myself in position.”

O’Toole also has a fluffy friend—her English bulldog Hank—waiting back in her housing, who will be happy to see her no matter any way she scores. It’s the first time she’s brought any one of her four dogs on the road with her since joining the LPGA in 2011, and O’Toole is thrilled to have Hank with her.

“He’s been a nice distraction, having a dog is like having a kid on the road. I get done here and I’m like, I got to go rescue him now,” said O’Toole. “I wake up and have to add that to my routine in the morning, take him to the bathroom and walk him a little bit. I feel like it’s kind of kept my mind from sitting there in silence just thinking about golf. It’s been a nice distraction. That is also a question my parents asked, ‘Is he coming with you every week now?’ I’m like, ‘Oh, man, I don’t know.’”

‘Kru Rong’ wants One final shot at a world title before he bows out

Oct 03. 2020Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke oDejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke o Former One strawweight world champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke of Thailand is one of the most decorated martial arts world champions on the One Championship roster. He’s a multiple-time Lumpinee Stadium Muay Thai world champion and an absolute legend in the striking community.

At 41 years of age, “Kru Rong” knows he’s already at the tail end of a long and glorious career, and he can feel the call of the sunset creeping up ever so slowly. But as long as he feels strong and able, Dejdamrong promises fans he will continue to strive for greatness.

Dejdamrong will next appear in a strawweight mixed martial arts (MMA) contest opposite China’s “Wolf of the Grasslands” Hexigetu at the One: Reign Of Dynasties, scheduled for October 9. The venue and location for this event have yet to be confirmed and announced by One Championship.

It’s a bout Dejdamrong feels will prove he still has a lot left in the tank.

“Age could be a factor at some point, but I’ve taken great care of myself over the years both physically and mentally. I’ve been through a lot of ring wars, but I feel strong and healthy. I can still go far, and I have big plans for the future,” said Dejdamrong.

“I think in my division, I’m still in the top 10. I’m still a very dangerous fighter. My goal is to break into the top 5 and work my way back up to a world title shot. I’m going to give it everything I’ve got.”

Dejdamrong captured the inaugural strawweight belt in 2015, with a technical decision victory over the Philippines’ Roy Doliguez. He successfully defended the title against Yago Bryan months later, but succumbed to Japan’s Yoshitaka Naito the following year. Since then he’s been on the comeback trail, trying his best to re-establish his position among the division’s elite.

“Kru Rong” is a winner of three of his last four bouts, and is determined to claw his way back to the top.

“It will all depend on my condition. I listen to my body more than anything else. If I feel like I can still compete among the best, I will do everything in my power to get back to the top. One thing I want is to get the chance to compete for the world title again before I walk away for good,” said Dejdamrong.

In the main event on October 9, reigning One strawweight Muay Thai and kickboxing world champion Sam-A Gaiyanghadao of Thailand will defend his Muay Thai title against top contender Josh “Timebomb” Tonna of Australia.

Dejdamrong is currently in Singapore, where he’s based as an instructor at Evolve MMA and competes as a member of the famed Evolve Fight Team. Training with fellow world champions in Muay Thai, boxing, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ), Dejdamrong continues to hone his skills as he prepares for a stiff challenge from Hexigetu.

“I’ve been keeping ready, training hard every day and looking to improve all of my skills always, whether that’s Muay Thai, BJJ, or MMA. It’s not going to be an easy fight, because I’m going up against a young, hungry lion,” said Dejdamrong.

“My goal will always be to win. Hexigetu is not an easy opponent but I can beat him. I’ll use all of my skills that I’ve honed here at Evolve to get the job done. I’m old and getting up there in age and experience, but that doesn’t make me any less dangerous. Watch out.”

LPGA, CME Group reaffirm final event of 2020 season

Oct 02. 2020

The LPGA announced today that the CME Group Tour Championship will have a few adjustments to its 2020 tournament format. As the final event for the 2020 LPGA Tour season, the field will comprise 70 players versus the traditional 60 in the Race to the CME Globe points standings, along with two sponsor exemptions.

The 72-hole tournament will have no cut, with a purse of $3 million. The winner will receive $1.1 million, the highest first-place check on the LPGA Tour.

“The 2020 LPGA Tour season has certainly faced its challenges, and thanks to incredible partners like CME Group, we have been able to stage competitive opportunities for our players,” said LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan. “Terry Duffy and his team are among the greatest ambassadors for women’s golf, and we are incredibly appreciative that they have remained with us through this season. The LPGA and CME Group intend to return the Tour Championship back to its original format in 2021.”

“We are extremely proud to continue our long-standing relationship with the LPGA Tour, which supports female athletes while also elevating the sport of women’s golf,” said Terry Duffy, CME Group Chairman and CEO. “Through the CME Group Tour Championship, we are also very proud to continue our support of St. Jude Children’s Hospital – where no family ever receives a bill because all they should worry about is helping their child live. We believe this year’s Tour Championship will provide an exciting finish to one the most uncertain years in history.”

The 2020 CME Group Tour Championship will be held at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla., on Dec. 17-20. Sunday’s final round will be televised on NBC, with the first three rounds airing on Golf Channel.

Rivera focusing on Haskins’s throwing

Coach Ron Rivera pointed out that on two of Dwayne Haskins’s interceptions Sunday, the quarterback put the ball on the wrong side of the receiver – and if he had not, both might have been completions. This is an example of the inaccuracy that has troubled Haskins throughout his young career. While he has shown that he can be on-target, particularly this season, long-term concerns about his accuracy linger.

Beyond anecdotal evidence, the key is what is referred to by NFL Next Gen Stats as completion percentage above expectation, or CPaE, which shows a quarterback’s performance relative to the difficulty of his throws. Although imperfect, the stat has proved to be a stable bellwether of accuracy, among other things.

This is not good news for Haskins. This season, he has had the NFL’s worst or second-worst CPaE in each of the first three weeks. His current mark of minus-9.8 means that, controlling for the difficulty of his throws, his completion percentage is fourth worst in the NFL (56.4%) and well behind the expected league average (66.2%). If Haskins’s CPaE stays around minus-9.8 for the rest of the year, it would be the second-worst season since the NFL began tracking the stat in 2016.

The counterargument here is sample size: Haskins has started 10 NFL games. But his CPaE this year is not far from last year’s, which was minus-4.6, third worst among qualified passers.

These numbers do not doom Haskins. He could fix mechanical flaws, become more consistent and prove to be the long-term solution for Washington at quarterback. But they do illustrate a concerning trend.

After Rivera defended Haskins on Sunday, he took a more critical stance Monday.

“The one thing he has to understand,” Rivera said, “is there is a certain point where you’re no longer a rookie.”

With wide receiver Steven Sims Jr. limited by a toe injury, two reserve rookies stepped into the spotlight. Antonio Gandy-Golden, a fourth-round draft pick, and Isaiah Wright, an undrafted free agent, showed playmaking ability in spurts. Wright looked dangerous when given the ball in the open field, and Gandy-Golden flashed versatility on a 22-yard double reverse.

While neither is expected to become a focal point of the offense soon, the unit needs their help. Top receiver Terry McLaurin’s share of team receptions, 28.1%, is seventh highest in the NFL.

The running back timeshare seems to be solidifying with Antonio Gibson in the lead and J.D. McKissic playing a sizable, complementary role. This could change – offensive coordinator Scott Turner and Rivera often say their personnel groupings are matchup-dependent – but in the past two weeks, Gibson and McKissic have combined to handle 78% of the rushes out of the backfield.

After Peyton Barber’s 17 rushes in Week 1, when the defense handed the offense five short fields, Barber has almost disappeared, with just eight offensive snaps the past two weeks. And Bryce Love has yet to be active, although Turner said last week that Love “is doing a great job for us in practice.”

“Bryce is going to have an impact as the year goes on,” Turner added. “It’s just kind of a matter of when.”

– – –

After a rocky start to the season, free safety Troy Apke played “much better” this week, according to Rivera. The training camp star has been a frequent target of fan frustration as the defense allows explosive plays. But Rivera said the safety’s angles improved Sunday, and it showed early in the second quarter when Apke tracked the route of Cleveland Browns star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and broke up a deep pass attempt.

In a way, Apke and Haskins have been on opposite trajectories through three games. Rivera emphasized there will be growing pains for both but that he wanted to see “positive growth.” He got it from Apke on Sunday, and “that was good to see.”

Sam-A pomises fans a ‘beautiful’ performance against  Tonna

Sep 29. 2020 Sam-A Gaiyanghadao Sam-A Gaiyanghadao Reigning ONE Strawweight Kickboxing and Muay Thai World Champion Sam-A Gaiyanghadao of Thailand is known for his devastating strikes inside the ring, renowned for his counter offense and even stronger defensive skills.

When he steps into the ONE Championship Circle against number one ranked strawweight contender Josh “Timebomb” Tonna, Sam-A promises fans will witness a ‘beautiful’ performance, one that will captivate their imaginations.

Sam-A and Tonna are set to square off in the main event of ONE: REIGN OF DYNASTIES, scheduled for Friday, 9 October. Up for grabs will be Sam-A’s Muay Thai World Title. Venue and location for this event have yet to be confirmed and announced by ONE Championship.

Speaking to the media ahead of his much-anticipated return to action, Sam-A sings high praises of his opponent, and tells fans he’s ready to go.

“I think Josh Tonna has shown a lot of improvement recently, especially in his last fight. In his earlier fights for ONE Super Series, I don’t think he was right for the division. But now at strawweight, he looks good. He’s fast and aggressive. I think this is going to be a fun fight,” said Sam-A.

“He has good talent and he’s a good fighter. I like his striking with both hands, and he has a powerful knee strike. But I think he lacks a lot of experience. My advantage would have to be my left kick and my elbows. These are my sharpest tools.”

After surrendering his flyweight world title to England’s Jonathan Haggerty in May of 2019, Sam-A bounced back in a very big way, defeating France’s Daren Rolland with a statement-making second round knockout at ONE Championship’s historic 100th live event, ONE: Century.

He followed up that performance by defeating Enfusion Kickboxing World Champion “Golden Boy” Wang Junguang of China to capture the inaugural ONE Strawweight Kickboxing World Title.

Then earlier this year, he added yet another accolade to his glowing list of achievements, capturing the inaugural ONE Strawweight Muay Thai World Title with a unanimous decision victory over Australia’s Rocky Ogden.

Against Tonna, Sam-A faces a hungry young challenger who has chanted his name since the beginning of the year.

“He’s now the number one ranked contender, and he’s been calling me out for a long time. He’s a talented fighter. I knew that one day, we would meet in the ring. So that’s why I’ve been training so hard and keeping myself sharp. I was waiting for this day to come,” said Sam-A.

“I’ve had a very long time to prepare for this fight, and I’m ready to go. This is going to be a fun night on October 9.”

ONE: REIGN OF DYNASTIES also features a slew of compelling mixed martial arts and ONE Super Series contests. Confirmed to see action are top flyweight contenders Reece “Lightning” McLaren of Australia and Aleksi “The Giant” Toivonen of Finland. More bouts will be announced at a later date.

Sam-A implores fans to keep a close watch on what will happen in his title defense, as he vows to put forth a special showcase of skills.

“To all the fans watching around the world, please support me. I want to defend my world championship belt in the most beautiful way possible. I want to surprise you all with a great performance. Keep your eyes on this fight, it’s going to be amazing,” Sam-A ended.

PGA TOUR announces commitments to two star-studded fields at  CJ CUP

Sep 29. 2020

Joining defending champion, Justin Thomas at THE CJ CUP @ SHADOW CREEK will be 2020 FedExCup champion Dustin Johnson, World No. 2 Jon Rahm, newly crowned U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau and 18-time PGA TOUR winner, Rory McIlroy.

The five will be joined by Tommy Fleetwood, Rickie Fowler, Ian Poulter, Justin Rose and Jordan Spieth who have each accepted sponsor exemptions for the October 15-18 tournament, which will be played at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Johnson, Rahm and McIlroy will also headline the field at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP @ SHERWOOD from October 22-25, along with Phil Mickelson, Fleetwood, Fowler, Rose and Spieth who have accepted sponsor exemptions to the event. Other notable players already committed to the event at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California include defending champion and 82-time PGA TOUR winner, Tiger Woods and Japanese superstar Hideki Matsuyama.

“Adding this elite group of players to these fields alongside Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas and Hideki Matsuyama lends a strong hand in showcasing a powerful lineup of PGA TOUR stars at both THE CJ CUP @ SHADOW CREEK and ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP @ SHERWOOD. We are thrilled to offer world-class competition this October to our fans in Korea, Japan, the United States and across the globe. I would like to express our appreciation again to our title sponsors, CJ Group and ZOZO Inc., for their commitment in moving their tournaments from Korea and Japan respectively to the U.S. for this year only. This ensures a strong and robust schedule for the month of October that also features the Sanderson Farms Championship, Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and Bermuda Championship,” said Ty Votaw, Executive Vice President, International, PGA TOUR.

Dustin Johnson

Johnson, a 23-time PGA TOUR winner, produced an amazing run of form over a five-week stretch to claim his first FedExCup title earlier this month. The big-hitting American won THE NORTHERN TRUST and TOUR Championship and finished runner-up at the PGA Championship and BMW Championship to claim the TOUR’s Ultimate Prize, the FedExCup. Johnson, who was voted 2020 PGA TOUR Player of the Year, also won the Travelers Championship in June and finished tied sixth at the recent U.S. Open. 2020 will mark his tournament debut at both THE CJ CUP @ SHADOW CREEK and ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP @ SHERWOOD.

Johnson said: “I’m looking forward to playing in THE CJ CUP @ SHADOW CREEK and the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP @ SHERWOOD in October, which should be two great weeks of golf. My game has been really good recently, so I am excited to play both tournaments.

“I was excited to hear that THE CJ CUP will be played at Shadow Creek, where I have played some good golf in the past with family and friends.  It’s a really good golf course and should be a great venue for the tournament.  As a proud member at Sherwood Country Club, I am thrilled the club will be hosting the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP. I have played countless rounds there and love the golf course, so I’m really looking forward to the tournament.”

Rory McIlroy

McIlroy enjoyed one victory and seven top-10s to finish tied eighth in the FedExCup in the recently concluded 2019-20 season. As the defending FedExCup champion in 2019-20, he claimed his 18th career victory at the WGC-HSBC Champions in China last November where he defeated Xander Schauffele in a playoff. It will be his first appearance in THE CJ CUP @ SHADOW CREEK. He finished equal third at the inaugural ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP in Japan last year and will arrive at Sherwood where he has made two previous starts, finishing fourth and 11th in the 2010 and 2013 Hero World Challenge, respectively.

McIlroy said: I’m looking forward to playing in THE CJ CUP @ SHADOW CREEK in October. I’ve watched how the tournament has become a success over the past few years and it’ll be exciting to have the opportunity to compete in it for the first time. I had a great time at the inaugural ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP and will be hoping to build on last year’s success when we play at Sherwood. I’ll miss playing in Japan this year but hopefully, we’ll get to return soon.”

Jon Rahm

Rahm won twice at The Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide in June and the BMW Championship in August to finish fourth on the final 2019-20 FedExCup standings. The five-time PGA TOUR winner also enjoyed four other top-10s, which saw him reach World No. 1 for the first time in June. Currently ranked second in the world, his victory at the BMW Championship was courtesy of an amazing 66-foot birdie putt in a playoff against Johnson. Morbidelli takes magnificent maiden pole ahead of Quartararo and Rossi

Sep 27. 2020

The Italian is the only man in the 1:38s, with Quartararo second and Rossi ready for his 350th premier class start from a first front row of the year

Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) can add a maiden pole position to his tally in 2020 as the Italian proved the only man able to dip into the 1:38s in qualifying at the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya, only a tenth shy of the lap record. He was two tenths clear of teammate Fabio Quartararo, who starts second, with Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) taking third as the number 46 gets a front row start for his 350th premier class race. Championship leader Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), meanwhile, starts P17…

In Q1 Dovizioso was one of the main names fighting to make it through, but all did not go to plan for the Italian. Ultimately it was Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) who was quickest, with Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) snatching second right at the end in some late heartbreak for Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar). Rins now lines up in P13, and Dovizioso down in P17.

It was a Yamaha stranglehold at the beginning of Q2 as Morbidelli set the first banker, with Rossi then taking over at the top before his teammate Maverick Viñales hit back. Quartararo, meanwhile, ran wide as he got his YZR-M1 all sorts of crossed up at the tricky Turn 10 – just as his teammate Morbidelli slammed in the fastest lap of the weekend to go provisional pole again with a 1:39.110.

Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Tech3) then also got it wrong at Turn 10 but unlike Quartararo, Oliveira was down – thankfully unhurt. Next to get the hammer down were two Ducatis – Miller and Johann Zarco (Esponsorama Racing), and Miller only had one set of fresh soft tyres available after coming through Q1. The Aussie made it count though, slotting into second just 0.115 off Morbidelli.

As the final runs dawned, Quartararo then found himself rumbling out of pitlane with five minutes to go having not set a lap time after his earlier Turn 10 moment. The Frenchman and last year’s poleman was P12, but that was soon going to change as four Yamahas lit up the timing screens. Halfway around the lap, Quartararo was 0.132 under Morbidelli’s time, although the number 21 was going even quicker. Over the line though it was Quartararo who improved this time around to a 1:39.008, with Morbidelli unable to – and nor did Viñales. Rossi, however, did, with the ‘Doctor’ leaping up from P7 to P3 to make it a provisional Yamaha front row lockout.

On the next lap, Morbidelli was flying yet again. The San Marino GP winner was 0.082 under Quartararo’s time at Sector 3, but could he hold it through Sector 4? He could. Ultimately, Morbidelli did more than hold his advantage and the final sector was a stunner as he shot to the top, over two tenths clear. Quartararo went in search of a final lap charge but it didn’t materialise for the MotoGP™ sophomore, and no one had an answer for Morbidelli.

That makes it a first premier class pole position for the recent first time winner, with Quartararo set to launch from P2 and ahead of all his closest challengers in the overall standings. Rossi makes it a Yamaha 1-2-3 for the second time in three races and takes his first front row of the season… as well as sounding pretty confident for Sunday.

Miller did an impressive job to qualify P4 as the leading Ducati rider, beating Viñales by just over a tenth as the number 12 lost out on making it another Yamaha 1-2-3-4. To the right of Viñales is Zarco, his final lap moving him up to just 0.007 slower than Viñales’ effort to give the Frenchman his best grid slot since his Czech GP pole.

Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) spearheads Row 3 ahead of Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar), with both riders also looking like strong contenders in the race – and Mir having already taken a podium from P11 on the grid last weekend. Ducati Team’s Danilo Petrucci joins the Spaniards on the third row for his second consecutive P9 start.

Rookie and Brno winner Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) completes the top 10, ahead of Nakagami and Oliveira after the earlier crash for the Portuguese rider.

Will the Championship standings change significantly in 24 hours’ time? Dovizioso leads by one point as it stands and he’s down in 17th, so it seems like Sunday is a prime opportunity for Quartararo, Viñales and Mir to strike back. The Catalan GP promises to be another phenomenal MotoGP™ race, and a pivotal one at that.

Tune in and don’t forget, the premier class get underway an hour later than normal this weekend, so it’s 15:00 local time (GMT+2) on Sunday!

Franco Morbidelli: “To beat Fabio in a hot lap is always great because it means you’re veryvery fast! He’s very good in races but especially on one lap. Today I was feeling great with the bike and I was wanting to make a really good laptime, finally I was able to make that impressive laptime. I’m really happy, I have to say thanks to the team. We worked well in FP4 too, so tomorrow we’ll try to make a good race as well.”

Marini goes back-to-back with pole in Barcelona

The Championship leader starts from the front, with closest rival Bastianini tenth on the grid as Navarro and Lowes complete the front row

Another week, another lap record! Luca Marini (Sky Racing Team VR46) has done it again in the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya, putting in a 1:43.355 to set pole position and a new lap record at the track. He’s joined on the front row by Q1 graduate Jorge Navarro (HDR Heidrun Speed Up) and podium finisher last time out Sam Lowes (EG 0,0 Marc VDS). Enea Bastianini (Italtrans Racing Team), who’s only five points off Marini in the standings, starts down in tenth.

In Q1, it was Joe Roberts (Tennor American Racing) who went top, followed by Jake Dixon (Petronas Sprinta Racing), Navarro and Nicolo Bulega (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) as they headed through – leaving one surprise in their wake in the form of Aron Canet (Inde Aspar Team Moto2), who missed out and starts P19 after also crashing on Saturday morning, rider ok.

Marini was quickest from the get go in Q2, with teammate Marco Bezzecchi going second in the early stages before Xavi Vierge (Petronas Sprinta Racing) and Lowes leapfrogged him to sit as Marini’s closest challengers. That soon changed, however, as Marini went quicker again and Bezzecchi following suit to take back second. Q1 graduate Dixon then moved up into third as Marini went even quicker, setting the fastest ever Moto2™ lap around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. His 1:43.355 moved him well clear of the competition, and as it turned out it would secure him pole.

Dixon was then setting red sectors and the British rider pipped Bezzecchi to P2, but the Brit was still 0.349 off Marini’s time. Another Q1 graduate in the form of Navarro then shot up into provisional second, cutting the gap to Marini down to a tenth and a half. Navarro’s teammate Fabio Di Giannantonio (HDR Heidrun Speed Up) and Lowes then interchanged P3 lap times to push Dixon down to P5, with Di Giannantonio forced to settle for P4.

That was pretty much that at the top. Marini was untouchable, with Navaaro in second and Lowes taking third from ‘Diggia’, leaving Dixon down in fifth. The Brit nevertheless claims his best-ever Moto2™ qualifying result for the second weekend in a row  though – going one better than Misano. Bezzecchi will start on the second row alongside ‘Diggia’ and Dixon, the Italian forced to settle for sixth.

Joe Roberts spearheads Row 3 in P7 after coming through Q1, taking his first Saturday top 10 since his Czech GP pole position. After finishing second in FP3, rookie Marcos Ramirez makes it two Tennor American Racing machines on the third row as he took his best qualifying of 2020 to sit in P8. Xavi Vierge completes the third row.

Remy Gardner (Onexox TKKR SAG Team) completed the top 10 in Q2, but after crashing under yellow flags on Friday, the Australian faces a six-place grid penalty. What does that mean? It means Bastianini will move up a position into the top 10 on the grid – and every little helps for the Italian who faces a tough task to mix it with Marini on Sunday afternoon.

The stage is set for another Moto2™ classic, but don’t forget races on Sunday are taking place an hour later than normal. The Moto2™ riders will do battle in Barcelona at 13:20 local time (GMT+2).

Luca Marini – Sky Racing Team VR46 – Kalex 1:43.355
Jorge Navarro – HDR Heidrun Speed Up – Speed Up +0.181
Sam Lowes – EG 0,0 Marc VDS – Kalex +0.282

Luca Marini: “I felt very good from the beginning of the weekend, it wasn’t easy and I didn’t expect it because it’s a very different situation to Misano, but the bike is still working well. So I don’t have so much rear grip but for everyone it’s the same so that’s great. I tried to manage the rear in practice because I want to understand how it will be in the race. In the quali I focused on being precise, and with a good lap and all sectors together. I think I did my job, and I’m very happy to start from pole because it will be important tomorrow, but I think Speed Up and Sam are strong here so it won’t be an easy race, but for today I’m happy and for the work I’ve done with my crew.”

Ahead of the pack: Arbolino takes pole by a stunning six tenths

The Italian bounced back from a huge highside on Friday to set a new lap record, with Fernandez and Rodrigo completing the front row… on identical laptimes!

Tony Arbolino (Rivacold Snipers Team) has taken his first pole position of 2020 at the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya, the Italian slamming in a new lap record 1:47.762 to pull an incredible sixth tenths clear of Raul Fernandez (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Gabriel Rodrigo (Kömmerling Gresini Moto3). And it’s the exact same 0.618 gap to both, with Fernandez and Rodrigo setting identical laps but the former’s second fastest effort ensuring he starts second.

In Q1 there was already plenty to talk about as Ai Ogura (Honda Team Asia) stole the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Incredibly, Championship leader Albert Arenas (Gaviota Aspar Team Moto3), closest challenger Ogura and third overall John McPhee (Petronas Sprinta Racing) all found themselves in the session, and it was mission accomplished for Arenas and McPhee as they moved through behind Niccolo Antonelli (SIC58 Squadra Corse) and Q1’s fastest man Alonso Lopez (Sterilgarda Max Racing Team). But Ogura? The Japanese rider suffered his worst qualifying of the season by a whopping nine places, so he’ll be facing a serious mountain on Sunday from P24 on the grid.

Once Q2 was underway, Fernandez set the first benchmark of the session with a 1:48.611 to lead Darryn Binder (CIP – Green Power) and Kaito Toba (Red Bull KTM Ajo) in the early stages, but Arenas was next on the attack and into provisional P2 on his first flying lap. Arbolino then went top by just 0.045, moving the goalposts ahead of a frantic final couple of laps for the field.

On his second run, Fernandez reclaimed provisional pole by 0.186, but the standings were soon to get a shake up. Seven riders were lighting up the timing screens as the 18-rider field chased pole, but the fastest of them all was Arbolino. Over three tenths under Fernandez’ lap time halfway around the lap, the Italian was nearly four tenths under by the third split. Making no mistakes through the final sector and keeping it together across the line, Arbolino’s time was astonishing. Pole secured, lap record obliterated and over six tenths clear.

There was last minute drama for Fernandez too as the Spaniard tumbled out at the final corner, but rider ok and ready to line up second. Rodrigo takes the outside of the front row after setting his best time late on, and although it’s identical to Fernandez’ best, the Argentine’s second fastest time was slower so he takes P3.

Arenas will be stoked to be heading Row 2 in fourth, the highest-placed of the current title-challenging trio. Jaume Masia (Leopard Racing) played the risky strategy of not setting a lap time until the final minute, but it paid off as the Spaniard claimed P5 in Q2. Niccolo Antonelli (SIC58 Squadra Corse) completes the second row in sixth, the Italian 0.8 shy of Arbolino’s pace but only just over two tenths away from P2.

Filip Salač (Rivacold Snipers Team) spearheads the third row in seventh as the Czech rider took his best Saturday afternoon result of the season, joined by Toba and Binder on Row 3. The Japanese rider improved on his final flying lap to get the better of the South African, who was unable to beat his second lap set early on.

Sergio Garcia (Estrella Galicia 0,0) rounds out the top 10 in Moto3™ Q2, joined on Row 4 by Andrea Migno (Sky Racing Team VR46) and McPhee. That’s now three races in a row that McPhee has failed to qualify inside the top 10, although he did still win one of them… and Sunday is very much another day.

The Moto3™ title fight looks set to take another twist on Sunday afternoon in Barcelona. It will no doubt be a thrilling watch as the lightweight class prepare for battle once more in 2020 – so tune in but at the later time of 12:00 local time (GMT+2)!

Raul Fernandez – Red Bull KTM Ajo – KTM – +0.618
Gabriel Rodrigo – Kömmerling Gresini Moto3 – Honda +0.618

Tony Arbolino: “It was an incredible lap, I think from the first run I saw I was first and went in the box and saw the data. It wasn’t a perfect lap, I said ‘ok, we can do better’ but I didn’t expect to do that lap. We put the bike the same as last year and we’re faster in QP and a bit more difficult in the race, but it was an incredible lap with 0.6 to second and we did an incredible job. We didn’t stop working every day so I think we deserve it! But tomorrow we need to get a lot of points because we’re not so close to first in the Championship so we have a lot of work to do tomorrow!”

World champ Sam-A to showcase Thai fighting spirit against Aussie ‘Timebomb’

Sep 26. 2020

Thailand’s Sam-A Gaiyanghadao of Thailand makes his much-anticipated return to the ONE Championship on Friday, October 9 when the straw-weight world champ will put his title on the line against Australia’s Josh “Timebomb” Tonna.

.

The legendary Lumpinee and Rajadamnern Stadium world champion tops the ONE: Reign of Dynasties bill and plans to showcase the fighting spirit of Thailand against the No 1 contender.

“To all my Thai fans, thank you for the support. It means a lot to me. I have been training during Covid-19, always working hard. I am 100 per cent ready for this fight and I will do my best as usual,” said Sam-A.

Dealing with Covid-19 while in Singapore, where he lives while training and instructing at Evolve MMA, Sam-A says he’s hungry for battle after the months-long suspension of ONE action due to the pandemic.

“It’s been a bit uncomfortable. We all had to stay in our homes and basically live life on the same daily routine. Sometimes I would keep myself active by shadow boxing, or do some light sparring with a local friend. But … I haven’t seen my family for so long,” said Sam-A.

“But I’m really glad to get the chance to compete again, especially now that the world is slowly starting to recover from the effects of Covid-19.”

After first losing his flyweight world title to England’s Jonathan Haggerty in early 2019, Sam-A bounced back with two spectacular performances, knocking out Daren Rolland last October, and then capturing the inaugural ONE Strawweight kickboxing world title with a victory over Wang Junguang in December.

Earlier this year, Sam-A added the inaugural ONE Strawweight muay Thai world title to his mantle with a dominant decision over Rocky Ogden.

ONE: Reign of Dynasties will also feature top flyweight contenders Reece “Lightning” McLaren of Australia and Aleksi “The Giant” Toivonen of Finland, with more bouts to be announced.
