THE NATION

Qatar’s decision to ban beer sales at World Cup stadiums was generally met with sympathy by fans on the Doha corniche on Friday (November 18).

Organisers of the tournament made the unexpected announcement after previously saying there would be opportunity to purchase Budweiser – FIFA’s beer partner – during matches.

Supporters who spoke to Reuters were understanding of the decision.

“I think we should enjoy the game with or without it, in the end it is a party for everyone,” said Omar Lopez, an Ecuador fan. “I think if they did it has something a lot to do with their religion and I respect that. Everyone is going to enjoy the game with or without it.”

A Qatari national who only gave his name as Saqr said: “You need to respect our tradition as alcohol is prohibited in Islam, so you cannot drink in front of Islamic people so we need people to respect our culture, but we respect their culture also, so we make some specific places, there you can drink a beer.”

However Nahir Nieto, from Argentina, insisted alcohol was a World Cup essential.

“You share beers with friends, with family when you are happy,” she said. “And Argentina is very happy today because we are at a World Cup, we really want to win so (beer) is unmissable. It is like a bottle of water when you are in the middle of the desert. For sure, we had the idea there would be beer. I am not sure what is going to happen.”

The reversal permits World Cup sites to sell only non-alcoholic beverages, which represents a reversal of an agreement that approved international sponsor Budweiser to sell at all events.

“Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing the sales points of beer from Qatar’s FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters,” FIFA said on Friday.

Approved “fan zones” near the stadium can still sell alcoholic beverages. Fans found attempting to bring their own alcohol into stadiums will be barred from the game and tournament.

Spain’s trained on Monday (November 14) for the first time since Luis Enrique confirmed his 26-man squad for the Qatar World Cup.

In a joyful, relaxed mood, players trained at Las Rozas soccer city training ahead of their friendly match against Jordan in Amman on Thursday.

After that match, the squad will travel to Doha.

Twelve years on from their World Cup triumph in South Africa, Spain is aiming for a second World Cup title at the Nov. 20-Dec. 18 tournament.

The absence of veterans like De Gea, Thiago and Barcelona defender Marcos Alonso points to the manager’s preference to go all-in with Spain’s new generation of talent.

The Spanish team face Costa Rica, Germany and Japan in Group E.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2022

THE NATION

Portugal’s World Cup build-up was over-shadowed on Monday by the comments of captain Cristiano Ronaldo who said he felt “‘betrayed” by his club Manchester United.

For the last two decades or so, Portugal has arrived at every major tournament with all eyes on Ronaldo.

He was left out of Manchester United’s final game before the World Cup for the second match in a row after the club said he had an undisclosed illness.

Manchester United said it was trying to establish the full facts behind Ronaldo’s interview with television presenter Piers Morgan.

The Portugal great said he did not respect United manager Erik ten Hag and he felt “betrayed.”

The 37-year-old forward has been showing signs of a let-down for the first time in his career and will enter what could be his last World Cup without the status of indisputable starter.

Even with Portugal he recently was relegated to the bench, something unimaginable not long ago.

The team’s hopes of doing well at World Cups and European Championships were mostly dependent on whether Ronaldo could successfully lead his team to victory.

He will still be Portugal’s biggest star in Qatar, but this time there will be lot more to Portugal than Ronaldo.

2016 European champions Portugal are in Group H together with Ghana, Uruguay and South Korea.

Portugal will start their World Cup campaign against Ghana on 24 November.

Ronaldo tells talk show he feels betrayed by Manchester United

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2022

Reuters

Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo says that the club have betrayed him and that he is being forced out, while he has no respect for manager Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo rejoined United from Juventus for a second spell at Old Trafford in August 2021 on a two-year deal, returning to the club where he won eight major trophies from 2003-2009.

In an interview with Piers Morgan for TalkTV, released on Sunday, Ronaldo was asked whether United’s hierarchy were trying to push him out of the club.

“Yes, not only the coach (Ten Hag), but another two or three guys around the club. I felt betrayed,” he said.

“Yes I feel betrayed, and I felt some people don’t want me here, not just this year, but last year too.”

Last month, Ten Hag said Ronaldo refused to come on as a substitute against Tottenham Hotspur when the forward walked down the tunnel with a few minutes of the match remaining after being left on the bench.

He was then not part of the squad that faced Chelsea the following Saturday.

The 37-year-old forward, who will captain Portugal at the World Cup in Qatar, said of Ten Hag: “I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me. If you don’t respect me, I’m never gonna have respect for you.”

United did not immediately respond when contacted by Reuters for comment. After the Tottenham game, Ten Hag said that Ronaldo remained “an important player in the squad”

Ronaldo said Manchester United did not support him when his daughter was taken to hospital in July. He said the club doubted him and showed a lack of empathy when he did not arrive on time for pre-season training.

“I think the fans should know the truth,” he said.

“I want the best for the club. This is why I came to Manchester United.

“But you have some things inside that don’t help (us) reach the top level as City, Liverpool and even now Arsenal… a club with this dimension should be top of the tree in my opinion and they are not, unfortunately.”

Ronaldo’s first spell was under former United manager Alex Ferguson, who retired in 2013. The Portuguese said his view of the club is shared by Ferguson.

“The progress was zero Since Sir Alex (Ferguson) left, I saw no evolution in the club. Nothing had changed,” Ronaldo said.

“He knows better than anybody that the club is not on the path they deserve to be.

“He knows. Everyone knows. The people who don’t see that… it’s because they don’t want to see, they are blind.”

Ronaldo was also critical of the club’s decision last season to replace manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a former team mate of the Portuguese, with Ralf Rangnick.

Rangnick had left his role as head of sport and development at Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow to take over at Old Trafford.

“After the club sacked Ole, they bring sporting director Ralf Rangnick, which is something nobody understands,” Ronaldo said.

“This guy, he is not even a coach. A big club like Manchester United brings a sporting director surprised not only me but all the world.”

On Friday (November 11), fans, many of them Indian migrants living in Qatar, donned the colours of their favourite teams and took to the streets of Doha to show their support.

The Brazil fan contingent claims to be the largest in Qatar and they did not disappoint as they marched near the National Museum of Qatar dressed in Brazilian green and yellow. Fans even had a life-size cutout of Brazil megastar Neymar Jr.

Among the Brazil supporters was Sergio Pereira who came from Brazil to cheer on his side.

Pereira called on more international fans to make their way to Qatar saying it has all the trappings to be, “one of the best World Cups ever.”

And he should know, Pereira told Reuters the World Cup in Qatar will be the 10th he has come to in support of his home country.

“This has all the elements to be one of the best World Cups ever. So, come. If you haven’t decided to come to Qatar, there’s still time to come, because the people are nice, the infrastructure is beautiful. The spirit of the game is all around us.” said Pereira

Brazil’s South American rivals Argentina also had a large contingent in the streets on Friday.

Spain coach Luis Enrique included Barcelona’s Ansu Fati but left out Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara and Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea from his 26-man World Cup squad on Friday (November 11).

Fati, now 20, made his international debut in 2020 at 17 and in his second game became the youngest player to score for Spain, breaking a record held since 1925 by Juan Errazquien.

But the forward is fighting his way back from four surgeries to repair an injury to his left knee, suffered in November 2020.

“He was one of our last question marks. I was uncertain until the last minute, but I picked him because his technical qualities are amazing and being here with us could work as a big motivator for him as he’s still working to get back to peak form,” Enrique told a news conference in Las Rozas, a suburb of Madrid.

“It’s a process that he’s going through to become the Ansu Fati that he was before the injury.

“Surely it could be assessed when he will recover his previous level. It is one of the things we all look for.”

Luis Enrique declined to comment on the players who were left out, but the absence of veterans like De Gea, Thiago and Barcelona defender Marcos Alonso points to the manager’s preference to go all-in with Spain’s new generation of talent.

De Gea has fallen out of favour with Luis Enrique who said in March he “wanted to test other goalkeepers” and Thiago saw his role diminish with the rise of Barca teenagers Pedri, 19, and 18-year-old Gavi.

“Youth gives you freedom because you are not yet aware of the consequences,” Luis Enrique said. “Yet, most of the youngsters that are with us are already in high-level teams.”

“The bar that I’m setting is infinity. My goal is to compete in every game.”

“There’s no one outside of Spain who rules out Spain as a candidate to be among the best. We are going to cause problems, there is no doubt.”

Spain have been drawn in Group E with Costa Rica, Germany and Japan.

Guardiola: “There’s no chance I will rest players ahead of the World Cup”

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2022

THE NATION

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was unequivocal when asked on Friday whether he would consider resting any players ahead of the World Cup.

Reports state that some national football associations have asked clubs to rest their players in the final round of league games.

But Guardiola said that there is no way he would consider this.

“Absolutely we’re not going to rest players for the national team. Absolutely not,” he said.

“I advise don’t call me. Don’t call me.”

“I’m going to stay 24 hours with my wife, 24 hours with my kids. 24 hours – my kids doesn’t like to be 24 hours with me. My wife, yeah my wife is, me too, looking forward to be with her because she’s living in Barcelona and after that go into a few days Barcelona my dad, family and yeah relax, see World Cup games on TV and see our games talk with my staff by phone and take a little bit break and, fourth, fifth (of December)? Start again, no? Fifth, come back here and restart.”

Journalist : could see yourself staying at another club for as long as seven years?

“Stay another place seven years? No, I don’t think so. It’s difficult to find, I said many times it’s difficult to find what I have here as a manager. This is the fact that, to be manager a long time, you have to be so supportive. The results help a lot is undeniable. Otherwise, you know in this world, they sack you, they fire you. We know that.” Pep add.
