WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 09, 2022

EPSON tour players Pavarisa Yoktuan and Jaravee Boonchant shared the second round lead at four-under par -140 after the second round of the Bt2.5 million SAT-TWT Open Road to World Ranking at Pattaya Country Club in Chonburi on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old Pavarisa carded five birdies before stumbling to a bogey on the 13th hole to finish the day with a 68 at the par-72 6,542-yard layout. She surged atop the leaders’ board which was shared by the up-and-coming Jaravee after the latter submitted her scorecard with an even par.

Hailing from Nakhon Si Thammarat, Pavarisa is making her first domestic event in several months after completed her season on the EPSON Tour at No 23 on the money rankings.

“The flag positions are very tough. Luckily, I played very well on par five holes. I made some good long putts. I was quite happy with my round,” said Pavarisa, also a former LPGA player.

“Actually I didn’t set high hope this week. I’m just here to catch up and have fun with fellow players. I’m also using this tournament as a warm-up before I fly to the US for the LPGA Qualifying series,” added Pavarisa whose best attempt on the LPGA was a tied fifth position in the Marathon Classic back in 2019.

“My plan for the final is pretty much the same. The court sets up pretty tricky and it’s very windy especially in the morning. I will stick to my game plan and hope things will go my way,” she added.

Jaravee, also from the southern part of Thailand, traded three birdies with three bogeys for a 72. She is eyeing on adding her second trophy in 2022 to her cabinet after winning the EPSON Tour Championship in Florida last month.

“I’m quite happy with the way I’ve been playing over the past couple of days. I’m glad that I wasn’t too greedy and can stick to my plan,” said the 23-year-old Thai who finished 12th on the EPSON Tour rankings this year.

“Even I hit a 72 today, I’m still satisfied with my round judging from how tough the flag positions are and how windy it is here. I still put myself in a good position and I expect the final round to be very entertaining as everyone will be attempting to shoot scores,” Jaravee said.

Sitting a stroke back were Nimittra Juntanaket and Mind Muangkhumsakul, both on three under-par-141. Nemittra lost her chance to become the round leader following a disastrous double bogey on the 10th hole while Mind also wasted her lead by committing three bogeys in the last five holes.

Overnight leader Kusuma Meechai was far from impressive after she hit four bogeys, one double bogey against only two birdies for a 76 and a 143 in total.

The ninth SAT-TWT Open is organized by Thailand Women’s Professional Golf Association (Thai WPGA). It will be competed in a three-day stroke-play format. After 36 holes, top 60 and ties will move ahead to the final round where they will battle it out for the winner’s prize money of Bt367,500.

NBTC’s must-have rule ‘a hurdle for market mechanism in securing broadcast rights’

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 09, 2022

A former manager of the Thailand national under-23 football team has called for a review of the NBTC’s “must have” rule, which has created difficulties for Thailand in secure the broadcasting rights for the 2022 World Cup.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Watanya Bunnag said that with only 11 days left, it remains unclear if Thai football fans will be able to watch the World Cup.

She also raised the issue of propriety if the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has to spend 1.6 billion baht to acquire the rights for the broadcast when not everyone in society is interested in football.

Watanya explained that the NBTC had instituted the “must have” rule after the auctions for digital television licences so that people from all sections of society will be able to watch important programmes without restriction, as happened during the 2014 World Cup.

She said that the objective of the rule was to prevent people from getting exploited or placing unnecessary burdens on operators.

However, the rule was twisted as it interfered with the market mechanism, because the cost of broadcasting rights depends on the viewership. Therefore, the cost will be extremely high when compared to other programmes, as the football World Cup is held every four years.

She said that buying the broadcast rights would create no problems if it were worth investing in. However, the “must have” rule was discouraging investors as they do not get exclusive broadcasting rights, which are required to generate revenue and profits.

In the past, the Television Pool of Thailand (TPT) was formed with channels 3, 5, 7, and 9. They invested together for broadcasting rights and spread the broadcast and revenue equally depending on the investment ratio.

TV operators or programme owners must pay the TPT if they want to use the footage or content, including advertisers.

Watanya suggested reviewing this rule, as it would solve the root cause of the problem, even though it might be too late for this World Cup. She said that the government should find a source for the budget otherwise people would question the use of taxpayers’ money for something not beneficial to them.

She said the market mechanism could solve the problem without burdening the government or the people.

Watanya also explained the reason why Thailand’s broadcasting rights were more expensive than other countries.

She said that the Fifa licensee knew that the government must secure the broadcast rights no matter how expensive it is, and that is the reason Thailand pays more than other countries in the region.

She summarised the “must have” rule, which was used to protect the people, is costing tax money and allowing foreigners to extort easily.

Argentina will win Fifa World Cup, football game predicts

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 09, 2022

Video game developer EA Sports has used its football game “Fifa 23” and come up with a prediction that Argentina will beat arch-rival Brazil in the final to win the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

EA Sports has a track record of correct predictions, picking the eventual winners of the 2010, 2014, and 2018 World Cups, the company said.

For this World Cup, to be held in Qatar, EA Sports used its “Fifa 23” game with dedicated Fifa World Cup 2022 ratings to simulate all 64 matches.

According to the simulation, Argentina would take on Brazil for the first time in the World Cup since 1990, and for the first time ever in the World Cup final.

The game predicted that Lionel Messi would lead Argentina to victory for his first World Cup victory. It would be Argentina’s first World Cup triumph since 1986, and their third overall.

EA Sports also predicted that Messi would win the Golden Boot award, with eight goals in seven games, followed by Memphis Depay with six goals in five matches, and Kylian Mbappé with six goals in seven matches.

With eight goals, Messi is also predicted to win the “Golden Ball” award as the best player in the tournament.

The simulation predicted a four-way tie for the “Golden Glove” award between Rui Patrício of Portugal, Alisson of Brazil, Dominik Livaković of Croatia, and Emiliano Martínez of Argentina.

However, Martinez would pip his rivals as his team would advance the farthest in the tournament, EA Sports predicted.

It also named the team of the tournament in a 4-2-4 formation:

  • Goalkeeper – Emiliano Martínez (Argentina)
  • Defenders – João Cancelo (Portugal), Raphaël Varane (France), Marquinhos (Brazil), Marcos Acuña (Argentina)
  • Midfielders – Leandro Paredes (Argentina), Rodrigo de Paul (Argentina)
  • Attackers – Vinícius Jr (Brazil), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Kylian Mbappé (France), Richarlison (Brazil)

Pep Guardiola has criticised the post-World Cup schedule that will see the last 16 round of the Carabao Cup played just a few days after the World Cup final.

The cup fixtures are scheduled to take place in week commencing 19 December – the final in Qatar is Sunday 18 December.

“What can I say? I think everyone is agree the word that you use (ridiculous) and, adapt,” said Guardiola.

“Long time I accept what it is, everything. So in Germany they start 20 January the first game after World Cup, we start 25 December.”

Pep said On how teams may cope with fixture congestion following the World Cup

“I think the target of all the clubs will be the amount of energy you spend in the training sessions to be perfect. So I had the feeling that it will be just sauna massage, sauna massage to recover the players, recover of the players, recover to the players to the next game, next game, next game. So it’s crazy, it’s a lot of games, a lot for the players. For me, not a problem because now I have two weeks off and after we make a pre-season, a small one in Abu Dhabi. And after come back here. But for the players is too much.”

Sepp Blatter, the president of FIFA when Qatar was awarded the 2022 World Cup hosting rights in 2010, has told Swiss newspaper Tages Anzeiger “Qatar is a mistake,” adding that “the choice was bad.”

The decision to award Qatar the tournament has been marred by controversy, including allegations of corruption and human rights violations, since it was first announced.

Blatter, who led FIFA for 17 years, has also been embroiled in accusations of corruption during his tenure. He was cleared of fraud by a Swiss court in June. The prosecutors have appealed the ruling.

“It is too small of a country. Football and the World Cup are too big for it,” Blatter said of Qatar, the first country in the Middle East to host the tournament.

He said FIFA in 2012 amended the criteria it used to select host countries in light of concerns over the working conditions at tournament-related construction sites in Qatar.

“Since then, social considerations and human rights are taken into account,” he said.

Blatter said he will be watching the tournament, which kicks off in less than two weeks, from his home in Zurich.

World Cup broadcast rights: Thailand slow off the blocks

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 08, 2022

Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that has not bought the broadcasting rights for the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

The World Cup, featuring 32 teams, will be held from November 20 to December 18 in Qatar.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC)’s executive board will meet on Wednesday to decide its response to a written request for funding from the Sports Authority of Thailand.

Football fans would undoubtedly be thrilled if the NBTC approves the request, but some experts are questioning the move. They argue that funding the broadcast of a sports event is not in line with the objectives of the NBTC’s Broadcasting and Telecommunications Research and Development Fund for Public Interest.

No other country in Southeast Asia is faced with a budget problem and they have already secured broadcasting rights. The Thai government will have less than two weeks to deal with this issue.

Brazil coach Tite included nine forwards in his squad for the World Cup, highlighting his wealth of attacking options for the tournament in Qatar.

The 30-year-old Neymar spearheads Brazil’s attack while the 26-man squad announced by Tite on Monday also features a group of young forwards including Vinicius Jr., Gabriel Martinelli and Rodrygo.

Dani Alves, the 39-year-old former Barcelona right-back, was also included in the list, which features eight defenders and six midfielders.

“What kid of reference is twitter if compared with…how many Brazilian citizens do we have? I am not here to please those who are at twitter, those who express themselves at social media. It’s a group that I don’t know how much they represent the Brazilian people. Why should I have to listen them? What I can do, I do. I respect different opinions. I am not here to convince those people (at social media). Nor do I want to do so.” said Tite

“We understand that Brazil is considered one of the favourites. In my opinion…Yes, we are.”

Brazil will play in Group G at the World Cup with Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon.

Serbia and Switzerland were also in Brazil’s group four years ago in Russia, when the Brazilians lost to Belgium in the quarterfinals.

The 61-year-old Tite has already announced he will step down after the tournament after six years in charge.

Three-time professional tour winner Kusuma Meechai grabbed a stroke lead over EPSON Tour rookie Jaravee Boonchant and Mind Muangkhumsakul after the opening round of the Bt2.5 million SAT-TWT Open Road to World Ranking at Pattaya Country Club in Chonburi on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old from Prachinburi highlighted her round with an eagle on the par 5 hole No 3, four birdies against a lone bogey on the 12th to launch her campaign in the ninth TWT-Open with a 67 at the par 72 6,542-yard landscape.

“The course sets up pretty challenging this week. The green is quite tough and the winds are quite strong,” said Kusuma whose best attempt on the TWT was at tied second in the 6th circuit at Panorama Golf and Country Club in Nakhon Ratchasim in August.

“I’m quite happy with the way I played on the third hole.   I hit to 156 yards from the pin, and although I didn’t hit the green in my next shot, I chipped in for an eagle,” added Kusuma who has yet to celebrate a crown since winning on the Thai LPGA event in 2019.

“I don’t have high expectations this week to be honest. I’ve never played on this course and it’s pretty tricky especially on the green. I have to be cautious,” said Kusuma, a one-time winner on the China LPGA event in Wuhan back in 2013.

Twenty-three-year-old Jaravee, who won the season-ending EPSON Tour Championship in Florida last month, bounced back from a slow start to shoot six birdies, five after the turn, against two bogeys for a 68.

“I didn’t hit the greens much, but I managed to come up with some good hit up and down shots and made several birdies at the back nine,” said Jaravee who is using this tournament to shape up her game before the LPGA Qualifying event in the US.

“The course is quite long with a lot of winds. There are a lot of slopes on the greens which are quite tricky. My plan is to give myself as many opportunities as I can and go for birdies,” said the promising Thai, adding that her experience with the EPSON Tour has benefited her game.

“I’ve learned to be patient around the course. Even I started with a bogey, I tried to calm down and fought my way back,” said Jaravee. Her round of 68 was also achieved by Mind who had six birdies and two bogeys.

A shot behind at 69 were Nemittra Juntanaket and Phannarai Meesom-us.

Patcharajutar Kongkraphan who has dictated five domestic titles this season opened with a 70, three shots behind the lead.
