Klopp plays down talk of Liverpool decline

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 02, 2022

Reuters

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp played down suggestions that his team are in decline, saying it is “not 100% fair” to judge the squad because they have had a number of injury problems this season.

Liverpool were expected to be Manchester City’s closest challengers for the Premier League title, but Klopp’s side are ninth in the standings after 12 games.

Liverpool have lost players including Diogo Jota, Naby Keita, Luis Diaz and Joel Matip to injury while Darwin Nunez has struggled to justify his price tag after being signed as a replacement for Sadio Mane.

Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by Leeds United, their first home league loss since March 2021, was another blow.

Klopp said there was no quick fix and urged patience as the team seeks to pick their season back up.

Q: “Are you ever concerned that this team might just have reached the end of its cycle and it’s in decline now? Is that a concern?”)

“So we are obviously out there and we do this job in public and I think the judgement for this will be later on in the season, or maybe at the end of the season where we say ‘ok, that’s obviously now, that’s it for this group of players’ or whatever, or for this manager if you want, whatever question will be asked then. But at the moment it’s not 100% fair to judge the team because it means the squad obviously, because we never had them (players) available, we miss – especially now up front – top quality (players), which is not helpful, that doesn’t mean the others don’t have (players missing who are) top quality, but with the amount of games, we’d usually make changes but now we can’t do that.” said Klopp

“For sure we will not take risks, but we cannot.. if you watch football a little bit, international football, then you would probably will know that Napoli is in incredible shape, plays incredible football, are top of the table in Italy, maybe the team in form in Europe at the moment. So this is not a game for a massive rotation probably, it’s not about whether we have to win 4-0 or whatever to go top of the group, we want to win the game obviously that’s clear, but the result in the moment is not really important. So I have to make the line up later today, maybe tomorrow morning. We will see and then we’ll go from there.”

Liverpool have qualified for the Champions League knockout stages and are due to host Napoli in their final group game on Tuesday. They are second in Group A and can only secure top spot by beating the Italian side by four goals or more.

Asked if he will field his strongest line-up and attempt to thrash Napoli in order to win the group or rest players as they seek to fight their way back in the league, Klopp suggested they would try to beat Napoli without the scoreline being a major factor, and that rotations to rest some players will occur.

Online budget system expected to speed up funding process for sports associations

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 01, 2022

The implementation of the online budget application system will help develop the Thai sports scene, the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) said.

A training programme was arranged for sports associations and the central SAT office at Crystal Design Center in Bangkok on Monday, while the training on Tuesday was for provincial sports associations and regional SAT offices.

The training aimed to help sports associations use the online system in applying for funds.

Nat Intharacharoen, who chaired NSDF’s subcommittee on sports development, said that the programme was developed to solve problems for national’s sports development, especially after sports associations fully accepted this.

He added that the online system will replace the document system, which will reduce the delay and lost document problems while the database could be made in the future. The process will be shorter, transparent and verifiable.

Meanwhile, NSDF manager Supranee Guptasa said that the training was successful as sports associations are fully determined to use the online system which will make the process faster and reduce the error.

Football fans wondering where the idea for Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2022 FIFA World Cup boots came from should look no further than the Portuguese Embassy in Bangkok.

The Nike Zoom Mercurial Superfly IX CR7’s that the Portugal captain will pull on when the tournament starts on November 22 take their colourful design from tiles that adorn the Embassy’s walls in Bangrak district.

Take a trip down Soi Charoen Krung 30 (Captain Bush Lane) from Si Phraya pier and you can get a glimpse of the Azulejo tilework designs that will be flashing before the eyes of goalkeepers in Qatar next month.

Azulejo tile designs weave major cultural influences from Portugal’s history.

“Azulejo” comes from the Arabic word for “small polished stone”, a legacy of the Islamic Moors and Arabs who arrived on the Iberian peninsula 1,300 years ago.

The original design featured simple geometric shapes and neutral colours but was adapted in each era and spread around the world through trading and colonialism.

The tiles at the Bangkok embassy were made by Portuguese ceramic factory Viúva Lamego in September 2019.

Ronaldo is set to debut the Azulejo boots in Portugal’s first match of the 2022 World Cup against Ghana in Group H on November 24. Portugal will also face Uruguay on November 28, and South Korea on December 2.

Thai golf star Atthaya tops world rankings at tender age of 19

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 01, 2022

Thai golfer Atthaya Thitikul, 19, reached No 1 in the world rankings on Monday.

Atthaya is the second Thai golfer to top the LPGA world rankings after Ariya Jutanugarn’s 23-week reign starting in June 2017.

She is also only the second rookie golfer to achieve the feat, after South Korean golfer Park Sung-hyun in May 2017.
From sickly child to world conqueror.

Atthaya was born on February 20, 2003, in Ban Pong district, Ratchaburi, to Montree Thitikul and Siriwan Thitikul.

She suffered from allergies as a child so her family encouraged her to play sports to build her immunity. After discovering she was naturally talented, Atthaya’s grandfather asked her to choose between golf and tennis for a potential professional career.

She chose golf, explaining tennis was more tiring as players have to run a lot. She began playing golf at the young age of six.

Atthaya made her first global breakthrough aged 14 in July 2017, when she won the Ladies European Thailand Championship as an amateur. With the stunning victory, she became the youngest person ever to win a professional tournament on tour, beating the record set by Canada’s Brooke Henderson in 2012.

She followed up in 2018 by winning the mixed-team gold medal at the Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina with Vanchai Luangnitikul.

This year, Atthaya won her first LPGA Tour tournament in her fifth start, at the JTBC Classic on March 27.

Only 19, she has now one LPGA Tour tournament and scored four victories on the Ladies European Tour.
Secret to success?

She pointed out recently that golf is a non-contact sport but players must use their brains and strategise a lot.
She also revealed the secret of her dedication and practise that powered her to the top.

“When I started playing, I was so happy that and I just couldn’t stop. I feel most like myself when I am out on the course.”

Asked which golfers she looked up to, Atthaya mentioned just one name.

Ariya Jutanugarn had been the inspiration in her career so far, she said.

Pogba out of World Cup

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 01, 2022

THE NATION

France midfielder Paul Pogba will miss the World Cup after failing to recover from knee surgery in time for next month’s tournament in Qatar, his agent said on Monday (October 31).

Pogba underwent an operation in September but his agent said that, following a medical review, the midfielder would not yet return to the Juventus squad or join up with France for the Nov. 20-Dec. 18 World Cup.

“Following yesterday and today’s medical review in Torino and Pittsburgh, it is extremely painful to inform Paul Pogba will still need recovery time from his surgery,” his agent Rafaela Pimenta said.

“For this reason, Paul will not be able to join Juventus squad before the World Cup break nor the French National Team in Qatar. If wishful thinking would change things, Paul would be playing tomorrow.”

Defending champions France had already lost midfielder N’Golo Kante, who was ruled out for four months after undergoing an operation on a hamstring injury this month.

Pogba was one of France’s most influential players in their 2018 World Cup triumph, scoring in the final victory over Croatia as they won the global title for the second time.

Max Verstappen put Red Bull’s off-track dramas to one side to win the Mexican Grand Prix on Sunday, breaking the record for most victories in a Formula One season in the process.

Forty-eight hours after Red Bull were fined US$ 7 million for breaking the sport’s financial rules Verstappen claimed his 14th win of the year.

Michael Schumacher won 13 of the 18 races staged in 2004 and Sebastian Vettel recorded the same number of wins from 19 rounds in 2013.

However, Verstappen now stands alone as the driver with the most wins in a single campaign.

“Yeah. It was an amazing race again. Probably a little bit better than expected with tyre wear. But yeah, once we stayed ahead into turn one, we could look after our tyres. Of course, on the soft (compound), it’s always a bit more critical in that first stint, but once we put the medium tyres on, it seemed very competitive.” Said Verstappen

“Naturally, we couldn’t keep up with these guys. Probably didn’t have the strategy maybe quite right today, but nonetheless, to be this close, to have to ‘2nds’ back to back, I’m so, so proud and so grateful to the team. I think the race pace generally quite good. It was just we were just off a set of tyres most of the time.”
Lewis Hamilton had hoped a different tyre strategy to Verstappen would propel him to his first win of the year for Mercedes.

But he had to be content with second place after crossing the finish line 15.1 seconds behind Verstappen.

Sergio Perez brought the second Red Bull home in third.

Hamilton’s teammate George Russell was fourth, with former Mercedes man Valtteri Bottas sixth, sandwiched between the two Ferraris of Carlos Sainz Jr. and Charles Leclerc.

Three weeks to go until World Cup kicks off in Qatar

MONDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2022

The World Cup kicks off on November 20 as Qatar take on Ecuador at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor. The final will be held on December 18 at the Lusail Stadium.

Thirty-two teams will be competing to dethrone holders France, who won the 2018 World Cup in Russia, defeating Croatia 4-2 in the final.

This year’s World Cup is the first to be held in a Middle Eastern country. The tournament has been rescheduled to the northern hemisphere’s winter months to avoid the intense summer heat in Qatar.

Qatar, the smallest country to have hosted soccer’s global showpiece tournament, is preparing for an estimated 1.2 million visitors during the World Cup.

Thousands of fans are expected to stay in neighboring countries like tourism hub the United Arab Emirates and fly in to Doha for matches due to limited accommodation in Qatar.

Ahead of the World Cup, Qatar has faced intense criticism from human rights groups and media over its treatment of migrant workers.

A Guardian newspaper analysis in Feb. 2021 concluded 6,500 South Asian migrants had died in Qatar since 2010 and the International Labour Organisation has said Qatar is not adequately reporting worker deaths.

A member of the World Cup organising committee said last week that Qatar acknowledges gaps in its labour system but the tournament has allowed the country to make progress on issues related to workers’ rights.

The government has denied a 2021 Amnesty report that thousands of migrant workers were still being exploited.

Sportswear company Hummel said last week that the kit Denmark will wear at the World Cup was designed as a protest against Qatar’s human rights record.

World Cup holders France have a long list of injuries that coach Didier Deschamps must take into consideration over the next few days although the preliminary list is long enough to include players in a race against time to be fit for Qatar.

The number of players in the final World Cup squads have been increased by three — from 23 to 26 — for the tournament in Qatar.

FIFA said in June the decision to expand squads was made “given the need to retain additional flexibility due to the unique timing” of this year’s competition, which will interrupt the European club season.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2022

The National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) held a two-day workshop to guide sports associations on using an online system to manage their budgets.

NSDF held a workshop with the Sports Authority of Thailand, sports associations and provincial sports associations to teach them about the online system that was developed by NSDF more than a year to help in filing applications.

The organisation taught the knowledge on applying for supporting funds and how to improve the process to be transparent and verifiable, to develop the Thai sports scene.

NSDF manager Supranee Guptasa said, “The online system will help in applying for supporting funds to be easier while the project will not be delayed. In the past, we faced problems with incorrect or incomplete documents.

“It will enhance efficiency in development of sports activities, including solving problems of sports associations and provincial sport associations, to understand the process and regulation.”

NSDF is holding a workshop on Monday for sports associations and the central SAT office while the training on Tuesday will be for provincial sports associations and regional SAT offices.
