Bayern Munich demolished visitors Mainz 05 6-2 on Saturday (October 29), with Sadio Mane scoring once and setting up two more goals, to take over the standings lead in the Bundesliga.

Senegal international Mane, who scored in Bayern’s 3-0 midweek win at Barcelona in the Champions League, also missed a penalty. Germany internationals Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala and Leon Goretzka were also on target for Bayern along with substitute Mathys Tel and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.

Mainz briefly cut the deficit twice, with goals from Silvan Widmer and Marcus Ingvartsen, after also missing a penalty.

The champions went two points clear at the top of the league with 25. Union Berlin, in second place on 23, are in action against Borussia Moenchengladbach on Sunday (October 30). Mainz drop to eighth on 18.

‘I would have been happy with a point’ – says Klopp after Leeds stun Reds at Anfield

THE NATION

Leeds ended their four-match losing run in the English Premier League by beating Liverpool 2-1 thanks to Crysencio Summerville’s 89th-minute goal at Anfield on Saturday, easing the pressure on coach Jesse Marsch.

While Leeds climbed out of the relegation zone following their first win since August, Liverpool remained marooned in mid-table and eight points from the top four in what is proving a difficult season for Juergen Klopp’s team.

The Reds fought back from conceding a bizarre opener in the fourth minute, when goalkeeper Alisson Becker slipped as he attempted to get to teammate Joe Gomez’s overhit pass across the face of the area. Leeds striker Rodrigo pounced and had the simplest task to tap into an empty net.

“I would have taken a point tonight – nobody would have been happy about it apart from me – when you see the game, when you concede the first one.” said Klopp

” Take a point, it’s fine, let’s go from there. My main issue with this game is how we defended the second goal because that was something in between, ‘Oh we have the ball, oh, we don’t have it, we lose it’ but then in the end everybody, until you don’t have the ball, everybody has to defend and we were not all there. There might be an explanation for it which I don’t know yet, but that’s my problem in this moment. But it happened anyway and now we will go again.”

Mohamed Salah equalised by volleying home from Andrew Robertson’s left-wing cross in the 14th.

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier produced a string of great saves before Summerville latched onto a pass inside the area from Patrick Bamford and, as Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk backed off, toe-poked a shot beyond Alisson.

It was the first time Liverpool lost in front of a full crowd at Anfield since April 2017 – the team was defeated at home during the pandemic when fans weren’t allowed – and the result added to Klopp’s problems, with his squad struggling with injuries and fatigued amid a busy schedule that includes the Champions League.

THE NATION

Kevin De Bruyne’s stunning free-kick ensured a 1-0 victory for City at Leicester.

The second half strike guaranteed our fourth successive victory at the King Power Stadium without conceding a goal – and sent us top of the Barclays Premier League table.

De Bruyne scored his third of the campaign to date – and his first away from home – following goals against Bournemouth and Brighton.

City supporters serenaded their hero with chants of ‘Oh Kevin De Bruyne’ after watching him blast past Danny Ward with an unstoppable strike from all of 30 yards.

It was a fully-deserved three points for Pep Guardiola’s men despite a late flurry from the hosts.

It says a lot about City’s dominance that Leicester’s star man in the first half was goalkeeper Danny Ward.

He had to be in top form to deny Pep Guardiola’s men who pressed and probed throughout the opening 45 minutes in search of a breakthrough.

City remained camped in the Foxes half for large periods but couldn’t get past Welsh international Ward who had to be on his toes to keep out the sky blues.

City stamped their authority from the opening moments and it was skipper Ilkay Gundogan who had the first opportunity as his looped header was collected well by Ward on five minutes.

Kevin De Bruyne, who boss Guardiola felt had been slightly below his sparkling best of late, was back in scintillating form as he created chance after chance for himself and his team-mates.

His whipped left foot cross from the left was met by Rodri on 13 minutes but again Ward made a smart save and, two minutes later, he produced a super ball into the channel to the onrushing Julian Alvarez whose snap shot was saved by the Foxes No.1. He was flagged offside but it would have been very interesting had it been referred to VAR, with the Argentine forward looking just on.

De Bruyne showcased his silky skills on 16 minutes when he somehow managed to brilliantly flick the ball back to an onrushing Bernardo Silva, with the Portuguese watching his blasted effort stopped smartly.

Rodri headed over on 18 minutes, again from the creative output of De Bruyne.

The Foxes, working hard to keep parity in the game at this point, did enjoy their first break into City’s box on 24 minutes as Harvey Barnes showed pace and grace in attack but the winger’s close-range shot was well parried out by the returning Ederson, who was rested for the midweek Dortmund draw.

It was Belgian star De Bruyne who again led the charge after that momentary concern as he created his own space centrally before producing a fierce low drive which again saw Ward deny.

There were calls for a penalty on 34 minutes as Jack Grealish looked initially to have been upended by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall as the pair flew into the box but the referee waved away appeals.

City continued to threaten as the first half played out but it remained 0-0 as the interval whistle blew.

It was more of the same as the second half began with City back on the attack.

Rodri, a constant attacking threat despite his anchor man role, had his head in his hands on 46 minutes as he showed his frustration at sending a right foot shot wide from just outside the box after being set up by Bernardo.

The breakthrough finally came on 49 minutes – and what a free-kick from KDB!

He showed his unbelievable quality to send a 30 yard bullet past Ward, who genuinely had no chance this time.

City fans, ecstatic to see us go ahead, broke out immediately into welcome chants of ‘Oh Kevin De Bruyne’.

To their credit, Leicester came back strong on 53 minutes and could so easily have been level had it not been for the reflexes of Ederson.

City’s No.31 got his fingertips to a ball that was flying goalwards on the volley by Youri Tielemans.

What followed was clever possession by City as we looked to stay in control and keep the home side at bay.

There was a chance for former City man Kelechi Iheanacho on 77 minutes as he took a shot early, after being subbed on for Jamie Vardy, but it flew wide of Ederson’s right hand post.

Timothy Castagne saw an opening on 83 minutes but the ball rebounded off his shoulder and wide following a whipped James Maddison ball in from the right.

Joao Cancelo saw an opening on 86 minutes but his rising shot flew too high while Ederson, moments later, got down well to deny Iheanacho.

John Stones headed against Ruben Dias as the clock ticked down but, thankfully, the ball went wide.

Gundogan almost made it 2-0 to the visitors as he was played in by an onrushing De Bruyne but the German couldn’t quite connect.

It didn’t matter, in the end though, as the referee blew his whistle to ensure three points for City.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2022

Muay Thai legend Buakaw Banchamek gained revenge by knocking out Japan’s Yoshihiro Sato in the first round at Rajadamnern Muay Thai Stadium in Bangkok on Friday night.

The 40-year-old Buakaw Banchamek was facing Sato, 41, a two-time K-1 Max Japan tournament winner and the only man ever to knock out the Thai fighter.

Their exhibition bout topped October’s bill of the Rajadamnern World Series “KAT Presents Legends of Rajadamnern”.

Buakaw had won three of their four previous encounters but suffered the only knockout of his career against Sato in 2008.

Both fighters started Friday night’s three-round match tentatively, wary of each other’s power.

Sato used his 11-centimetre height advantage to fire off a body kick early on, showing no signs of ring rust even though he hadn’t fought for seven years.

But Buakaw saw the kick, caught it and threw the Japanese fighter to the ground. The Thai warrior easily evaded three more kicks and started to counter with punching combinations.

Sato finally connected with a body kick and tied Buakaw up in the clinch but couldn’t do any damage there. He kept the Thai at bay with a kick but suffered a hard one-two to the body.

With a minute remaining in the first round, Sato went down for the first time but it was more of a slip. Sensing his Japanese rival was tiring, Buakaw unleashed a vicious one-two combination to the head, connecting with an overhand right that sent Sato to the canvas. The Japanese managed to get up but his wobbly legs showed he was in no state to continue. The referee called off the match 2 minutes and 15 seconds into the first round.

Buakaw successfully secured his second victory this year at Rajadamnern Stadium, in his return to the famous Bangkok venue after eight years.

The “KAT Presents Legend of Rajadamnern” was organised by Global Sport Ventures Ltd in collaboration with the Kickboxing Association of Thailand (KAT) and sponsored by the National Sports Development Fund.

Monza’s Spanish soccer player Pablo Mari was stabbed on Thursday (October 27) along with five other people in a shopping mall in the town of Assago outside Milan, Italy’s Carabinieri police said.

A 46-year-old suspect has been detained but the motive for the attack in a supermarket was not clear.

Carabinieri police said one person had died, a 47-year-old Bolivian national who worked at the supermarket. Another employee was injured along with four customers, including Mari whose agent said his injuries were not serious.

Monza Chief Executive Adriano Galliani told Sky Italy: “Pablo Mari had a fairly deep wound on his back, which fortunately did not touch his vital organs such as the lungs or others. His life is not in danger, he should recover quickly,”.

The 29-year-old centre back is on loan at Serie A club Monza from Premier League club Arsenal, who said in a statement: “We have been in contact with Pablo’s agent who has told us he’s in hospital and is not seriously hurt.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said: “I just found out. I know (technical director) Edu has been in touch with his relatives. He’s in hospital but he seems to be okay.”

Arteta was speaking at a news conference after his team’s match away to PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League.

Galliani earlier said on Twitter: “Dear Pablo, we are all here close to you and your family, we love you, keep fighting as you know how to do, you are a warrior and you will get well soon.”

THE NATION

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag praised Cristano Ronaldo after the Portuguese forward scored against Sheriff Tiraspol.

Ronaldo was brought back into the United fold after being left out against Chelsea following an incident where he refused to come on as a substitute against Spurs.

On the night, Ronalo scored the third goal of the game to help the Red Devils to a 3-0 win.

“Yes. But you said, he (Cristiano Ronaldo) kept going and the team kept going to put them in the right position. He kept going to get his self in the right position. He didn’t give up. I think that is what his whole career. That’s why he is so good. And in the end, he get the reward for it.” Said  Erik ten Hag

“I don’t have a problem with that as long it’s functional. But also from him I demand more. More runs behind and more often in the box and more followers and more tempo dribbles especially, and more playing in the pocket. So we demand more dominance in this game. And now then there is a trick like that, it’s nice, as long as functional. If you’re not losing the ball as you’re attracting plays, then it’s okay. But it’s a trick. Because of a trick. Yeah. Then I will correct them.”

Diogo Dalot broke the deadlock with a header from a curled Christian Eriksen corner just before half-time.

Soon after the break, Marcus Rashford added a second with a headed effort from inside the box.

In the 81st minute, Ronaldo scored to rapturous applause to make it 3-0 and seal victory.

United secured qualification from Group E with the win.

Next week they will have to beat Real Sociedad by two goals or more to avoid a play-off against a team dropping from the Champions League.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2022

Muay Thai legend Buakaw Banchamek has his sights on one goal: to avenge his defeat 14 years ago to the only fighter to have knocked him out in his entire career.

Buakaw will fight against Japanese boxer Yoshihiro Sato in the Rajadamnern World Series (RWS) at Rajadamnern Stadium in Bangkok on Friday.

Sato knocked Buakaw unconscious in their quarter-final bout of the K1 World Max 2008 at Nippon Budokan Arena in Tokyo. Buakaw partially avenged that knockout loss in 2013 with a victory by a decision over the Japanese fighter.

“Even though I had stopped boxing for a while, I have always conditioned my body,” Sato said as he prepares for the big fight.

“This time, I will fight against Buakaw again. I have fully prepared my body to knock him out for the second time.

“Buakaw and I made the kickboxing scene in Japan grow and made it famous. I have to say that Buakaw is a boxer with the best technique and strength. He has no weakness.

“If you want to ask me what is his weakness, I think it could be when I knock him out.

“I fought against him four times and this will be the fifth time. I did not think I will fight against him that much. I am happy to have a chance to fight against a great boxer like Buakaw but I am also a top Japanese boxer. This match will be great,” Sato said.

Buakaw vowed on stage that he will knock Sato out to get rid of a 14-year stigma.

“It was due to his confidence that he knocked me out on the stage. He has always been confident. I think he wants to become the only boxer to win against me twice but I am really determined this time to erase all old images with a win tomorrow [Friday]”, Buakaw responded.

Prawit, who also chairs the National Olympic Committee of Thailand, recently presided over a meeting with the committee of SAT and the National Sports Development Fund.

He said that Thai people must be able to watch the World Cup and told the SAT to cooperate with the NBTC.

The 2022 Fifa World Cup is scheduled to be held from November 20 to December 18 in Qatar with 32 participating teams.

Meanwhile, the SAT also summarised the statistics of the 2022 Thailand Grand Prix (MotoGP) held from September 30 to October 2 at Buriram International Circuit.

The race drew 178,463 spectators to the stadium while more than 800 million people around the world watched the broadcast.

It is scheduled to be held from October 27-29 next year and the SAT expects it will woo more tourists.

The meeting also approved 10 plans to develop Thai sports for the period 2023 to 2026 to improve athletes, personnel, organisations, facilities, systems, and management.

The NSDF approved the budget and plan for 2022 including the overall plan for 2023 to 2026.

Meanwhile, the committee approved benefits for boxers, which includes compensation for injuries and support for former boxers.

The committee also approved a bonus budget for outstanding performances in 2022 and also a plan to support the first Amazing Thailand World Mountain & Trail Running Championships, which will be held in Chiang Mai from November 3 to 6.

Chiang Mai aims to generate more than 450 million baht in the first Amazing Thailand World Mountain & Trail Running Championships next month, which is expected to see as many as 4,000 participants from 50 countries.

Governor Nirat Pongsitthithavorn said his province has teamed up with the Athletics Association of Thailand and the Tourism Authority of Thailand to hold the competition from November 3 to 6.

He said Chiang Mai is appropriate because of its “high mountains and trail routes, beautiful culture, and generous, kind people” who are ready to welcome athletes and tourists.

Moreover, the competition could help Thailand’s economic recovery and improve the country’s image while also building trust in the potential and readiness of the province and the country to organise world-class events, he noted.

Suladda Sarutilavan, director of TAT’s Chiang Mai office, said the competition, across a 10km route, is open to the general public and professional athletes from 50 countries.
