Viñales strikes late to top the Official Test

sports June 18, 2019 06:08

By MotoGP

A one-day test for the premier class saw the number 12 top the timesheets, but not by much

After a dramatic Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya, it was time for more laps on Monday as the premier class got back on track for a one-day Official Test. On the more general agenda, MotoGP™ tyre supplier Michelin brought four different rear tyres to test, added to those which were in the allocation for the race weekend. Three of them are being evaluated for use in 2020, and the other is being tested ahead of possible use at the Red Bull Ring and Buriram. And then, of course, teams had their own agendas.

Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP were testing electronics to improve engine braking and want to improve the smoothness of power delivery. The fastest man of the day with a lap much quicker than pole position, Maverick Viñales did a staggering 98 laps with a final laptime of 1:38.967, the lap with which he topped the timesheets. Teammate Valentino Rossi was testing a new exhaust and a new finger-operated rear brake, putting in a best of 1:39.968 after 71 laps.

Petronas Yamaha SRT’s Franco Morbidelli ended the day in P2, just 0.047 behind Viñales and another who improved late in the day, on lap 76 of 78. First time podium finisher and teammate Fabio Quartararo headed out later in the day to aid his recovery from arm pump surgery, but he put in 56 laps and did a best of 1:39.428. He practiced some starts and also focused on working with the tyres.

At Repsol Honda, reigning Champion Marc Marquez had three different bikes in the garage, and there was also a new swingarm attachment spotted. Marquez did 80 laps and his best was a 1:39.257 after 80 laps, but the Catalan GP winner also had a crash in the early afternoon at Turn 4, rider ok.

Teammate Jorge Lorenzo was another who crashed, this time in the morning, and the five-time World Champion went down at Turn 9. His best lap was a 1:40.357 and he did 65 laps, ending the day in P17. Lorenzo was seen with a new black front fairing to test.

Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) those aero parts from HRC to test, the same as seen on Lorenzo’s machine, and both he and teammate Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) were working on race setup. Crutchlow was P10 after 73 laps, Nakagami P7 after 59 – and the Japanese rider also tried the 2019 bike. HRC test rider Stefan Bradl was also out on track, doing 84 laps.

Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Alex Rins led the way at midday, and he was P4 by the end of play. He was testing an upgrade to Suzuki’s chassis, the same one that test rider Sylvain Guintoli used throughout the weekend at the Catalan GP.. The Spaniard did 75 laps and rookie teammate Joan Mir did 67. After his best MotoGP™ finish yet on Sunday Mir was back out on track to continue his adaptation to the premier class and he did a fastest lap of 1:39.670, improving later in the day. Guintoli was also at the test and did 69 laps.

At Mission Winnow Ducati, meanwhile, a carbon reinforced chassis was spotted. Andrea Dovizioso did 63 laps with a best of 1:39.917 to take P12, with teammate Danilo Petrucci doing 57 laps. The Mugello winner was 0.008 quicker than his teammate at the test to end the day in 11th.

Pramac Racing had rookie Francesco Bagnaia up in sixth overall as he did 54 laps, the best of which was a 1:39.466 set before a crash at Turn 13 next time around, rider ok. He tested the tyres and worked on improving setup. Teammate Jack Miller ended the day in P9 after 60 laps, and he had a new unit at the rear of the bike and worked with the new tyres. Tito Rabat (Real Avintia Racing) was first out on track and was P13 after 75 laps, and teammate Karel Abraham did 35 laps – with the Czech rider suffering a crash and the bike coming off pretty worse for wear.

KTM certainly had something high profile and pretty new on track: test rider Dani Pedrosa. The Spaniard appeared for the first time at an official test and did 51 laps as he worked through his program. Johann Zarco (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) tested a new chassis and put in 70 laps, moving up the timesheets late in the day to depose teammate Pol Espargaro from P15 by just 0.004, with Espargaro putting 57 laps despite a crash. Portuguese rookie Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) did 61 laps and ended the day just behind Iannone, with teammate Hafizh Syahrin putting in 52 as both continue adapting to the KTM MotoGP™ machine.

Finally, Aprilia Racing Team Gresini were represented by Andrea Iannone and test rider Bradley Smith, with the Noale factory working on the engine and with some small items to test in a host of different areas. Iannone was working more on short terms solutions and did 76 laps with a best of 1:40.606, with Smith focused more on the long term. He did 88 laps and was just half a tenth quicker than Iannone. Aleix Espargaro is sidelined after the crash near the start of the Catalan GP race.

That’s all from Monday, MotoGP™ returns at the classic TT Circuit Assen from the 28th to 30th June.

Royal seal of approval: Princess praises World Cup footballers

Coach Nuengrutai Srathongvian and manager Nualphan Lamsam are joyous at Thailand’s late goal against Sweden

Skipper Kanjana Sung-ngoen gave Thailand’s women a moment to savour after the historic World Cup defeat by the US, scoring a late goal in Sunday’s 5-1 loss to world No 9 Sweden in their second Group F game in Nice.

Five days after the 13-0 capitulation at the hands of the defending champions, Thailand rose from the abyss with their first ever goal against a higher-ranked team in the World Cup.  Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari, daughter of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn, was so moved by their efforts she called the players to tell them.

Kanjana’s strike also brought tears of joy from the whole team, including coach Nuengrutai Srathongvian and manager Nualphan Lamsam.

“I’m so overwhelmed to have scored the first goal for Thailand at this World Cup,” said the 32-year-old from Chon Buri. “It was not as tough as the game with the US, who didn’t allow us to gain any momentum.

“Sweden took their time but were more precise. We tried our best,” said Kanjana, who now has 17 goals in 58 caps since making her debut in 2009.

“To score a goal against one of the best teams in the world is so hard,” said coach Nuengrutai. “It shows that what we have been doing finally paid off. Even it was just one goal out of several chances, it made the whole team smile and feel happy.”

Nuengrutai said she couldn’t have asked her players to give any more, despite two heavy defeats and just the finale to come against Chile on Thursday. The team still has the most slender of opportunities to make the knockouts as one of four best third-placed teams.

Her players battled for the entire 90 minutes against Sweden and showed they weren’t at all intimidated against the former Cup runners-up. Despise being rank underdogs, their fighting spirit earned them widespread praise on social media from both Thai and foreign fans.

“I’ve noticed that the players have improved a lot mentally. They were so determined to try to fix their weaknesses from the first game. They have no fear,” Nuengrutai said of her team.

One of the most ardent fans was Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari who made video phone calls to show her support to the players before and after the game.

According to team manager Nualphan, the princess told the team: “We are a team of women. To have come this far, we have shown the pride of the Thai people. Even though we lost, this is the match that we must remember.”

Thailand, world-ranked 34, will Chile, who are two places below them, at 2am on Friday (Thailand time) and the match will be broadcast live on PPTV. Thailand will need a win – and a big win at that – to stand any chance of progressing but they will also need other results to go their way.

“As we lost a lot of goals in the first game, that will affect us if goal difference is taken into account. But we will give it a try. Anything can happen,” Nuengrutai said.

Woodland holds off Koepka to win 119th US Open golf title

Woodland holds off Koepka to win 119th US Open golf title

sports June 17, 2019 09:37

By AFP

Gary Woodland won the 119th US Open on Sunday, capturing his first major title with a 13-under par total to deny two-time defending champion Brook Koepka’s bid for history at Pebble Beach.

Woodland punctuated the victory with a birdie bomb at 18, a final flourish in a display of back-nine fortitude that saw him convert a 54-hole lead for the first time in eight career attempts.

“Once that went in, it all kind of came out of me, it was special to finish it off here at Pebble Beach,” said Woodland, who threw his arms in the air then pumped his fist.

He knew his 13-under total was one better than the 12-under posted by Tiger Woods in his US Open victory at Pebble in 2000.

But 19 years ago, Woods was the only player under par, marching to victory by a massive 15 strokes while Woodland topped a leaderboard that featured 31 players under par.

Most dangerous was Koepka, trying to become just the second player — and the first in more than a century — to win the US Open three straight times.

He started the day four strokes off Woodland’s lead and immediately applied pressure with four birdies in his first five holes.

But his three-under 68 left him three strokes shy on 10-under 274.

England’s Justin Rose, who started the day one shot behind Woodland, struggled to a three-over 74 to finish tied for third on seven-under with Americans Xander Schauffele and Chez Reavie and Spain’s Jon Rahm.

Woodland, 35, took a two-shot lead with a bold birdie at the par-five 14th, where he powered his second shot to the short rough behind the green and chipped to three feet.

“The idea was to play to win,” Woodland said. “That birdie kind of separated me a little bit.”

He was in trouble at the par-three 17th, where his tee shot found the front right of the putting surface — on the wrong side of a ridge in the hourglass green.

Woodland opted to pitch up and the shot tracked straight toward the hole, settling two feet away.

“I was just trying to get it over that hump,” Woodland said. “Fortunately I had the same shot earlier in the week, so I already executed it once. It came off beautifully, and I thought it had a chance to go in there — it gave me a little cushion on the last.”

– ‘He deserves it’ –

Woodland, who admitted he once had trouble handling the rush of adrenaline in pressure situations, displayed impressive poise on a day when plenty of players were pressing on a receptive Pebble Course.

Koepka’s charge slowed with a bogey at the eighth, and after two birdies and a bogey on the front nine, Woodland turned with a two-shot lead over Koepka and Rose.

Koepka pulled within one with a birdie at the 11th, giving the shot back at 12 when he failed to get up and down from a bunker.

Woodland also bogeyed the par-three 12th, but he salvaged a par after a poor tee shot at 13 to stay in front.

Trailing by two on the tee of the par-five 18th, Koepka found the fairway and ripped his second shot to the short rough behind the green, but his chip left him nine feet for birdie and he settled for a closing par.

“I played great,” said Koepka, who had taken his tally of major titles to four with his two US Open wins and back-to-back PGA Championship victories. “Nothing I could do.

“Gary played a great four days. Cool way to go out on 18, to make that bomb,” Koepka added. “He deserves it, he’s worked hard and I’m happy for him.”

Henderson makes history at Meijer LPGA Classic, Moriya at tied 9th

sports June 17, 2019 07:15

Brooke Henderson made history on Sunday, taking a one-stroke win at the 2019 Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give.

Not only is she the first multiple winner in tournament history, but with her ninth LPGA Tour victory, she became the winningest Canadian golfer, male or female, in the history of the LPGA and PGA Tours, one win clear of Sandra Post, Mike Weir and George Knudson.

“That’s so special and so incredible,” said Henderson. “Earlier this year to get my eighth win was a huge deal for myself and I felt like the whole country as well, and to kind of break that record now is really exciting. I just look forward to the rest of the summer and hopefully a lot more wins in the future.”

Henderson had a two-stroke advantage at -19 heading into Sunday’s final round and made three birdies through her first 13 holes. However, a bogey at No. 16 dropped her to -21 and into just a tenuous one-stroke lead. By the time Henderson made it to No. 18, Nasa HataokaSu OhLexi Thompson, who for the second consecutive tournament eagled the final hole, and Brittany Altomare were all tied at -20. But with a three-putt par, Henderson celebrated her third win on Father’s Day, joining the 2017 Meijer LPGA Classic and the Symetra Tour’s 2015 Four Winds Invitational.

“I was just trying to make some more birdies out there and I just seemed to be rubbing edges all day,” said Henderson. “Then I looked at the leaderboard and it was really cramming up, getting packed. Coming down here I figured after I heard that roar on the tee I would need eagle or birdie, so I was sort of surprised when all I needed was par. I’m glad that’s it because I was really shaking on those couple putts there.”

Starting the day tied for ninth, Hataoka made six birdies through her first 14 holes to jump up the leaderboard and closed with a chip-in eagle at No. 18 for a final-round 65. Oh returned a bogey-free 66 on Sunday. Altomare carded a 4-under 68 and capped off her round with a birdie on No. 18, while Thompson, who struggled with muscle spasms in her right shoulder, rode that closing eagle to her third consecutive top-two finish.

Morgan Pressel finished in solo sixth after a final-round 70 and her fellow Americans Nelly Korda and Annie Park tied for seventh.

Thai No 2 Moriya Jutanugarn, after a 70, settled at joint ninth.

BROOKE HENDERSON CELEBRATES DAD FOLLOWING FATHER’S DAY WIN

Brooke Henderson has one coach in her life – her father Dave Henderson, who has been his daughter’s golf instructor her entire life. She was beyond thrilled to celebrate her ninth LPGA Tour victory with her dad this Father’s Day, as well as with her mother Darlene and sister/caddie Brittany.

“He’s my coach and he’s always helped both Brit and I to get better and to improve,” said Henderson. “Before the tournament starts, we’re always talking through strategy, practice rounds, trying to make good decisions and hit the ball in the right places. As the tournament goes on, we talk about the pin sheets before the rounds, try to get a good strategy again. If we make mistakes out there, he’s just trying to correct them so we don’t make them again. So we owe a lot to him and we’re happy when he’s able to join us at tournaments. Both mom and dad are here today and this is my third win on Father’s Day; won Symetra and then two on the LPGA Tour, which is really cool. It’s just fun to be able to celebrate and get a win, especially on a special day.”

SU OH GOES LOW TO STAY IN CONTENTION

Su Oh tied her career-lowest round on Saturday with a round of 64 that featured nine birdies against a lone bogey. On Sunday, the 23-year-old from Australia returned a bogey-free 66 to finish in a four-way tie for second place, one stroke shy of winner Brooke Henderson.

“With how Brooke played like the first two rounds, you can go low,” said Oh, who shot her lowest round of the 2019 season on Sunday. “So I told myself to go low, but because I was so far behind, I had to go low to be in contention. Luckily, the greens were soft enough that I could be quite aggressive to straight at pins. It wasn’t running too much.  But yeah, I mean, I tried my best and I don’t know what the situation is out there, but I think I’m going to fall a little short.”

Oh made five birdies on the front nine and made six straight pars before making her final birdie on No. 16, coming up just short of her first career victory.

“I felt like on the back nine my putts just, you know, probably the nerves and just got some reads wrong, but holed a bomb on 16,” said Oh, who made her birdie putt on No. 16 from 60 feet. “That was like the first time I like hit it and I just got goosebumps all down my body.”

THOMPSON AGAIN EAGLES NO. 18

Lexi Thompson was six strokes behind the lead after a birdie and two bogeys before making the turn on Sunday at Blythefield Country Club, dealing with a pesky muscle spam on the front nine that she just couldn’t shake.

“I hate to make excuses, but I’ve never had my shoulder spasm like that,” said the 11-time LPGA champion.

“I’ve always had it go away sometimes when I do get spasms like that, but it just kept on going. I mean, over putts and your arm’s like shaking, it’s kind of hard, but it is what it is. I didn’t know how to deal with it. I’m not blaming it, but it also didn’t help.”

Thompson turned it around with four birdies on No. 10, 12, 13 and 15, closing in on the lead. After a misstep on No. 17, Thompson eagled the tournament’s final hole of the week for the second consecutive week. Last week, Thompson captured the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer with a closing eagle.

“I had about 197 into the last hole and a little into the wind, so it’s a perfect number for a full 4-iron. So I just committed to it, aimed a few yards right and just tried to hit a hold-off shot,” said Thompson. “I hit two great shots on that final hole and it was a putt that I liked the looks of, so I was like, ‘Just make it, just get it to the hole,’ and it went in.”

Marquez wins, Quartararo soars and chaos reigns at Catalunya

The reigning Champion extends his lead, the rookie’s luck turns and a multiple-rider crash makes waves

Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) took an impressive win in the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya on an expensive day for his key Championship rivals, with a dramatic multiple-rider crash near the start of the race creating some serious chaos. Marquez escaped that and in the aftermath it was Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) who emerged as his closest challenger, with the polesitter and French rookie cutting down the gap in the latter laps as he seared away from those on the chase. His second place makes him the second-youngest podium finisher in the MotoGP™ era, behind only Marquez, and he managed to pull two seconds clear of Mugello winner Danilo Petrucci (Mission Winnow Ducati) to do it.

It was Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati) who took the holeshot with another stunning start, this time from the second row, with Marquez pushed back into second and Quartararo then trying to send it around the outside of the reigning Champion. But he couldn’t quite make that stick and Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) capitalised to sweep through soon after. The number 12 then attacked Marquez to take over in second, with Jorge Lorenzo (Repsol Honda Team) making some serious ground up into fourth to fight for the podium.

Marquez hit back against Viñales on Lap 2 and it was shaping up to be a serious fight at the front, but that’s when the drama hit. Lorenzo went to attack Viñales just as Marquez attacked Dovizioso, and the number 99 then lost the front as the space ahead diminished. That set off a huge incident as the number 99 took down Dovizioso, then Viñales, and then Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) got caught too – with all four out the race. Marquez was clear of it, with Petrucci the man left in second, escaping the drama after having been passed by Rossi at the best time for one of them and the worst for the other.

Marquez was then able to pull the pin and extend the gap but the fight behind was on fire: Petrucci vs Alex Rins  (Team Suzuki Ecstar) vs Quartararo. First it was a duel behind the Italian before Rins then started looking for a way past Petrucci, attacking into Turn 1 and the Ducati defending to perfection in Turn 2. A couple of laps later it was a Rins and repeat, but the Suzuki man couldn’t make it stick.

He kept trying, but the next attempt was more costly. Running on and left heading over the Long Lap Penalty after dropping anchor to avoid Petrucci in Turn 1, the number 42 lost out and rejoined in sixth, behind his rookie teammate Joan Mir. That left him fighting to try and get back through, and left Quartararo with only one man in between himself and Marquez’ trail.

It didn’t take long; the Frenchman sliding up the inside of the Ducati to take over in second soon after. And then, he was in the same position as his fateful race in Jerez and wishing for more luck. Barcelona brought just that, with the number 20 then able to unleash his pace and push on after Marquez, immediately starting to cut the gap.

In the end, there weren’t enough laps left for a charge at the win, but the Frenchman made a little history regardless and a first rostrum finish is good payback for his incredible pace so far. Petrucci was around two seconds behind him but scored big for Ducati once again, with Rins taking fourth after managing to pass first Mir and then Jack Miller (Pramac Racing).

Miller was only two tenths behind him over the line, however, and the Australian’s P5 puts him back in the lead of the Independent Team standings. Behind them? Another small gap back to Joan Mir, who took sixth and his best rookie result yet, two better than his season opening P8 in Qatar.

Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) continues his consistency in seventh and took more solid points, ahead of Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu). Tito Rabat (Reale Avintia Racing) took P9 and his best of 2019 so far, as Johann Zarco (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) did the same and completed the top ten.

Andrea Iannone (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini), Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) and Suzuki test rider Sylvain Guintoli (Team Suzuki Ecstar) were the remaining finishers in a serious race of attrition, with fallers outside the huge incident near the start including Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol), Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT), Francesco Bagnaia) and Bradley Smith (Aprilia Racing Team), who made contact with Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) on Lap 1 and both crashed out.

It was a near-perfect day for Marquez’ Championship hopes in Montmelo, and the reigning Champion heads into the next race with a serious buffer of 37 points at the top of the table. Dovizioso remains second, Rins couldn’t capitalise too much in third…but next up it’s the Dutch TT, and that’s the perfect place for Yamaha, especially, to strike back. Marquez demolishes Moto2™ to take over at the topSpaniard makes it three wins in a row for the first time in his career and takes the Championship leadAlex Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) took a third magnificent win in a row in the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya, moving through from sixth on the grid to unleash his pace at the front and pull clear in another dominant performance. It’s the first time the number 73 has ever taken three successive victories and after a crash in Barcelona for former points leader Lorenzo Baldassarri (Flexbox HP 40) as well, Marquez now heads the standings by seven points. The man trailing him is Tom Lüthi (Dynavolt Intact GP), who took another podium and valuable 20 points to move back into second in the Championship, with Jorge Navarro (HDR Heidrun Speed Up) back on the podium in third.

Lüthi took the holeshot as the veteran screamed away from the line, with Marquez almost running into trouble in the early stages and remaining sixth. Enea Bastianini (Italtrans Racing Team), Fabio Di Giannanontio (HDR Heidrun Speed Up), Sam Lowes (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2), polesitter Augusto Fernandez (Flexbox HP 40) and Lüthi were the men in between him and the lead, and in the first few laps at least, Lüthi and Fernandez were pushing hard to make a gap at the front.

First the number 73 took Bastianini, then Di Giannantonio, and then Lowes as ‘Diggia’ followed him through as well. Next up was the task of cutting down the gap to the front, and the 2014 Moto3™ Champion set about doing that. Fernandez then attacked Lüthi for the lead, and that brought Marquez right into play in the front trio.

Lüthi took it back soon as he attacked into Turn 1 and the three stayed close, but it wasn’t long after that that drama hit further back as Baldassarri binned it at Turn 10, making the fight for the win the fight for the Championship lead. Lüthi tried to pull away, but Marquez then saw the Swiss rider struggling and made his move.

Once past, the Spaniard wasn’t able to immediately pull away but little by little he was able to extend the gap and make it his race to lose. Pitch perfect from then on, Marquez made zero mistakes and heads home with a seven point lead. Lüthi was his trademark consistent self to take 20 more points and move back into second overall, staying out the clutches of Navarro.

After a tougher round at Mugello, Speed Up rider Navarro was back on top form in Catalunya, unleashing more of his now-trademark late race pace as he was able to get past Fernandez. But the polesitter nevertheless impressed with his P4, making a good dent in the frontrunners once again.

Enea Bastianini (Italtrans Racing Team) was top rookie once again in P5, another race to remember for the Italian. Compatriot Di Giannantonio, after his early pace, crashed out. Behind Bastianini’s rather lonely ride, Luca Marini (Sky Racing Team VR46) won a battle royal to take P6, ahead of Marcel Schrotter (Dynavolt Intact GP), Xavi Vierge (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) and Sam Lowes in P9. Tetsuta Nagashima (ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team) had a top finish a little further back in P10.

Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) beat Andrea Locatelli (Italtrans Racing Team) to the line by hundredths, with Nicolo Bulega (Sky Racing Team VR46), Simone Corsi (Tasca Racing Scuderia Moto2) and Jorge Martin (Red Bull KTM Ajo) completing the points.

That’s it from Catalunya and next up it’s another track where Alex Marquez has shone in the past. Now seven points clear, will that extend in the Netherlands? Or can the field hit back? Find out in two weeks’ time as we race around the classic TT Circuit Assen.

Ramirez makes it a magnificent seven different history-makers in a rowSpaniard escapes the chaos to make it 12 different winners in a row and seven in the opening seven races of the season for the first time everMarcos Ramirez (Leopard Racing) made sure more history was made in the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya, with the Spaniard escaping from a dramatic and chaotic fight to win his first race and make it 12 different winners in a row. It’s also therefore seven different winners in a row this season, and the first time that’s ever happened in the first seven races of the lightweight class. Aron Canet (Sterilgarda Max Racing Team) took a valuable second place to extend his Championship lead, with impressive rookie Celestino Vietti (Sky Racing Team VR46) taking some tips from the boss to secure third with a stunning, Rossi-esque final corner move.

Tony Arbolino (VNE Snipers) took the holeshot from third on the grid, but fast-starting Canet shot through from fifth on the grid to attack quickly for the lead – and Lorenzo Dalla Porta (Leopard Racing) soon followed suit. Polesitter Gabriel Rodrigo (Kömmerling Gresini Moto3) dropped to seventh as the field shuffled through the first lap, and the first man to lose out in what would go on to be a race of attrition was Tatsuki Suzuki (SIC58 Squadra Corse) as the Japanese rider went down early.

The race was a classic Moto3™ melee, but in the early stages it was Dalla Porta in charge at the front of the big group. The Italian looked like a serious threat until heartbreak suddenly hit with 18 laps to go as the number 48 suffered a mechanical problem around Turn 13, forced to pull off and losing some serious ground in the Championship.

Marcos Ramirez was the new man in the lead, but there was more drama just around the corner. Can Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo) triggered a multiple-rider incident at Turn 4, with Albert Arenas (Sama Qatar Angel Nieto Team), teammate Raul Fernandez, Sergio Garcia (Estrella Galicia 0,0), Vicente Perez (Reale Avintia Arizona 77) and Filip Salac (Redox Pruestel GP) all caught up in it and out of the race.

There had been a group of seven riders in the lead group with 15 laps to go, but the group got bigger over the next few laps until the top 15 were back in a freight train. And it soon lost another member, with Arbolino, incredibly, also suffering a mechanical problem and the Mugello winner dropping back and then heading back into pitlane. The top 18 were within an awesome 2.7 seconds as the last laps appeared on the horizon, but there was more drama to come. Next it was Jaume Masia (Bester Capital Dubai) crashing out with eight laps to go, and then it was polesitter Rodrigo a few laps later – with Darryn Binder (CIP – Green Power) going down with him.

That left Kaito Toba (Honda Team Asia) leading the battle for supremacy, with the Qatar GP winner having put in a stunner to slice through the chaos from P24 on the grid. He managed to stay there too, and was the man with the target on his back heading onto the last lap. Canet and Lopez made for close company however, and as Canet then went for a move to attack at Turn 10, Toba suddenly slid out in another bout of heartbreaking drama.

Canet went a little wide, Lopez did the same, and Ramirez took his opportunity almost immediately. Cutting past into the lead, the Spaniard just had a few corners to go to win his first ever Grand Prix. Into the final corner though it looked like Canet was going to try and recreate the famous Valentino Rossi move from a decade ago, but he thought better of it and slotted back in behind Ramirez. Just behind them, however, Vietti went for it.

As Ramirez blasted clear of Canet towards his first win, the Sky Racing Team VR46 rider just behind them kept it pinned on the inside and managed to pull it off with serious style, taking his third podium and second of the season…from 21st on the grid!

Behind Lopez, Dennis Foggia (Sky Racing Team VR46) completed the top five, ahead of Ai Ogura (Honda Team Asia) taking his best ever finish in P6 after his stellar qualifying. Romano Fenati (VNE Snipers) finished seventh, with Ayumu Sasaki (Petronas Sprinta Racing) heading compatriot Ryusei Yamanaka (Estrella Galicia 0,0) just behind. Jakub Kornfeil (Redox PruestelGP) completed the top ten.

Niccolo Antonelli (SIC58 Squadra Corse) scored some valuable points in P11 after starting near the back following a penalty, and the Italian had even fought for the lead before running wide with a few laps to go. Wildcard Carlos Tatay (Fundacion Andreas Perez 77) took points in P12, just ahead of John McPhee (Petronas Sprinta Racing).

The Scot fought at the front throughout and in the podium battle until Turn 10 on the final lap, when he suffered a highside…and then a miracle save. Somehow staying on, it was an incredible sight and feat. Tom Booth-Amos (CIP – Green Power) scored his first points in P14, ahead of teammate Darryn Binder after the South African rejoined.

A true melee in stunning Moto3™ style, the chaos of the Catalan GP leaves Canet a valuable 23 points clear at the top of the standings heading into Assen. Will the Spaniard pull off more top tactics there? Find out in two weeks.

Sweden cruised into the knockout stages of the Women’s World Cup on Sunday after comfortably seeing off Thailand 5-1 to move top of Group F.

Thai players acknowledge their supporters after the game.

Peter Gerhardsson’s side are three points ahead of tournament favourites the USA, who take on Chile later on Sunday in Paris, after a routine win that however saw emotional scenes when Kanjana Sung-Ngoen scored a late consolation goal for the Thais.

Linda Sembrant and Kosovare Asllani put the Swedes two up after 19 minutes with Fridolina Rolfo rifling a long-range finish three minutes before the break.

Lina Hurtig headed home at the end of a flowing move with nine minutes left before the Thais, reeling from a humiliating record 13-0 defeat to the Americans in their opening match, restored pride through captain Sung-Ngoen’s drilled near post finish.

The goal sparked wild celebrations and even tears from the Thai players and coaching staff, but VAR stepped in to dampen their mood when Natthakarn Chinwong was judged to have handled in the area deep into stoppage time.

Elin Rubensson made no mistake from the spot to complete an easy win and her side’s qualification from the group.

Should the USA beat Chile as expected the Swedes will have to defeat them in their final match on Thursday if they want to win the group, due to the Americans’ whopping goal difference advantage.

Cool and calm Kwanchai celebrates win in Nakhon Pathom

The Nation

Nakhon Pathom – Hua Hin-based Kwanchai Tannin emerged the first player to win two All Thailand Golf Tour titles this season after he beat Ittipat Buranatanyarat by two strokes in the Bt3 million Singha All Thailand Championship at Suwan Golf & Country Club yesterday.

Kwanchai and his wife Nutthayaporn burapornchaithanun

The 33-year-old from Prachuab Khiri Khan, despite some hiccups, kept his cool to shoot a 69 for a total 22 under-par-266 to snatch his second title this year after the Chiang Mai Open two months ago.

“I’m so happy because I never won two titles in one year before,” said Kwanchai, a nephew of Thai golf legend Prayad Marksaeng. “I was nervous at the beginning as several guys were chasing after me. But I tried to be patient and kept hitting the fairways,” added  Kwanchai who would return home BT450,000 richer from the winner’s prize money.

Starting the round with four shots advantage, Kwanchai hit a double bogey on the sixth hole and a bogey on the 12th which narrowed down his lead to just one ahead of Phachara Kongwatmai, who just won the GolfSixes Cascais along with Thoncghai Jaidee in Portugal last week.

But the 20-year-old young gun endured back-to-back ending bogeys that saw him slip to third following a final round 68 and a total 19 under-par-269 with Itthipat, who hit a low score 65, surging to lone second on 20 under-par-269.

“I was a bit lucky that Phachara started missing in the last two holes. Experience really helped me today,” added Kwanchai who admitted he was forced to play golf by his uncle Prayad and his father at the beginning. “I didn’t first like it. It took me for a while to enjoy this sport,” he said.

Ittipat Buranatanyarat

Ittipat who is the current No 1 on the Asian Development Tour enjoyed his best result since he won the ATGT and ADT co-sanctioned Boonchu Runagkit Championship in January.

“I was a bit stunned to finish second as I was six behind the lead at start. But I was playing pressure free this week after having holidays with my family to recharge myself,” added the 26 year-old from Nonthaburi Ittipat who won Bt277,500 as runner-up.

Quartararo takes on Marquez as Yamaha make it a tight battle at the top in Barcelona

Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) has done it again. The French rookie followed up going fastest on Friday by taking his second pole position in the premier class despite still recovering from arm pump surgery, and that despite suffering his first ever crash in MotoGP™ during FP3. It was close between the two men at the top in qualifying, however, and the number 20 only just beat reigning Champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) to pole by 0.015. Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) was third fastest as Saturday proved a top day for Yamaha, but the number 12 subsequently received a three-place grid penalty and will be bumped back to the second row.

An infinitesimal 0.001 advantage for Viñales means Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) just missed out on a place in the fastest trio, but the Italian was impressive and will start from the front row after the Spaniard’s penalty. A huge crash in the morning prefaced a trip through Q1, but the number 21 bounced back in qualifying and just got the better of compatriot Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) in Q2, who was the fifth fastest but now heads the second row. Rossi’s 1:39.753 was the lap that meant all four Yamahas were inside the fastest five in qualifying for the first time since Brno 2012 after a phenomenal showing from the Iwata marque.

Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati) continues the Italian invasion near the front as he was sixth quickest and now starts fifth after improving on his second run and gaining a place as Viñales takes his penalty. ‘DesmoDovi’ was the fastest Ducati in qualifying, and although teammate Danilo Petrucci (Mission Winnow Ducati) wasn’t far behind, Viñales will now split the two on the grid. Petrucci suffered a crash in Q2, as did the man just behind him: Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar).

Rins was on a hot lap when he went down and with only two minutes left on the clock, the Spaniard didn’t have chance to improve. So it’s P8 for him and he needs another stellar first few laps like Mugello, where he picked his way through to perfection from 13th on the grid. Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) starts alongside the Suzuki rider, but a few tenths in arrears.

Jorge Lorenzo (Repsol Honda Team) finished just 0.048 off Crutchlow to line up tenth for his home Grand Prix, with the five-time World Champion having gone straight through to Q2. Q1 graduate and rookie Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) took 11th place, with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pol Espargaro launching from P12 at a true home race for the rider born only kilometers from the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

One name missing from the normal Q2 mix was Jack Miller (Pramac Racing), who faces a fight back from P14, and he’ll be one of many to watch when the lights go out. Can Quartararo race away from pole? It’s his last chance to beat Marquez to the record of youngest winner. Or can Marquez beat him to the holeshot? Yamaha look strong, Rossi is a record-breaker in Barcelona, Ducati always bring the pace on race day…you don’t want to miss Round 7 of the season from the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with MotoGP™ coming your way at 14:00 local time on Sunday (GMT+2).

Fernandez takes first pole, top six within a tenth in Moto2™The Spaniard took a first podium the last time he rode on home turf. This time it’s poleAugusto Fernandez (Flexbox HP 40) has been impressive so far in 2019 and qualifying for the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya was no exception. The Spaniard took his first ever pole position from veteran intermediate class campaigner Tom Lüthi (Dynavolt Intact GP) in Barcelona by just 0.021, with the front row covered by just 0.029 in total as Sam Lowes (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) took P3.

The close battle at the top didn’t end there, with all three riders on the second row qualifying within a tenth of the top. Jorge Navarro (HDR Heidrun Speed Up) took P4, edging out an impressing performance from rookie teammate Fabio Di Giannantonio, with Alex Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) sixth fastest. Marquez has won the last two races, and is exactly a tenth off pole…

Marquez’ key title rival Lorenzo Baldassarri (FlexBox HP 40) spearheads the third row of the grid in seventh – the Italian improving on his final flying lap to get into the top ten – ahead of rookie Nicolo Bulega (SKY Racing Team VR46), with Andrea Locatelli (Italtrans Racing Team) completing an all-Italian Row 3. His teammate, Enea Bastianini, was just half a tenth in arrears to take P10.

Remy Gardner (ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team) crashed during Q2, rider ok, but the Australian will line up 11th, ahead of Mugello polesitter Marcel Schrötter (Dynavolt Intact GP) and Italian GP podium finisher Luca Marini (Sky Racing Team VR46) just behind.

How will different conditions in the morning shake up the grid? It may well be cooler at race time. With such tight timesheets, you can’t miss the intermediate class in action at 12:20 local time (GMT+2).

Qualifying results:1 – Augusto Fernandez (SPA – Kalex) 1’44.170

2 – Tom Lüthi (SWI – Kalex) +0.021

3 – Sam Lowes (GBR – Kalex) +0.029

Rodrigo bests rookie Ogura to become seventh different polesitter in a rowArgentinean takes his fourth career pole position by just 0.021 in BarcelonaAnother day, another record broken in Moto3™: Gabriel Rodrigo (Kömmerling Gresini Moto3) became the seventh different polesitter in the opening seven races of the season at the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya, taking his fourth career pole position by just 0.021 ahead of a stunning session for Japanese rookie Ai Ogura (Honda Team Asia). It’s the first time since the introduction of the category in 2012 that the first seven pole positions have all been taken by different riders, and if Rodrigo can win on Sunday he would become the 12th different winner in a row, as well as the seventh different winner this year. And if he is the magnificent seventh different winner? It’ll be the first time it’s happened in the lightweight class since 1988.

Tony Arbolino (VNE Snipers) completes the front row and he’ll be the first aiming to stand in Rodrigo’s way and become the first repeat winner of the year, but the second row has some serious threats to contend with too. Tatsuki Suzuki (SIC58 Squadra Corse) has been on both the pace and the podium this season, but he’s yet to visit to top step – something not true of Aron Canet (Sterilgarda Max Racing Team), who lines up alongside him. The Championship leader will be aiming to win his second race of the season. Albert Arenas (Sama Qatar Angel Nieto Team) completes the second row, a Grand Prix winner already last year but another potential addition to the record-breaking roll in 2019.

Friday’s fastest Alonso Lopez (Estrella Galicia 0,0) heads up Row 3 ahead of Lorenzo Dalla Porta (Leopard Racing) after a crash for the man second in the standings, with John McPhee (Petronas Sprinta Racing) starting ninth. Marcos Ramirez (Leopard Racing) completes the top ten.

Jaume Masia (Bester Capital Dubai) was eighth quickest but is the first of seven riders to have received grid penalties. Six have 12-place penalties: Masia, Championship contender Niccolo Antonelli (SIC58 Squadra Corse), Dennis Foggia (Sky Racing Team VR46), Kazuki Masaki (BOE Skull Rider Mugen Race), Andrea Migno (Bester Capital Dubai) and Filip Salač (Redox PruestelGP). Vicente Perez (Reale Avintia Arizona 77) has a six-place penalty.

Will more history be made on Sunday? Can Rodrigo become the first Argentinean winner in the lightweight class and add to the incredible roll we’re on in 2019? The lights go out for the Moto3™ race at 11:00 (GMT +2).

Qualifying results:1 – Gabriel Rodrigo (ARG – Honda) 1’48.450

2 – Ai Ogura (JPN – Honda) +0.021

3 – Tony Arbolino (ITA – Honda) +0.314
