Talented team mates will ease pressure on Neymar at World Cup, says Brazil great Ronaldo

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2022

THE NATION

Former Brazil and Real Madrid great Ronaldo thinks that although the pressure will be on Neymar to deliver for his country at next month’s World Cup in Qatar, he will be supported by the best team mates of his international career so far.

“I think most the pressure will be on Neymar no matter what. This is definitely a better team than the ones Brazil had in the previous World Cups. He is going to have the help of great players who are living really great moments right now,” Ronaldo told Reuters in Madrid on Friday (October 14), minutes before the world premier of his documentary ‘The Phenomenon’, a DAZN Original focused on his life that is set to be released later this month.

Ronaldo is the symbol of Brazil’s last World Cup title, having scored both goals against Germany in the 2002 final in Japan.

He was also part of the squad that won the World Cup in 1994 at 17-years-old and has been named FIFA World Player of the Year three times and won two Ballon d’Or awards.

But Ronaldo said that he agreed to make a movie about his life because he felt the need to solve the untold mystery of the 1998 World Cup final.

Ronaldo went into the tournament in France, 1998 off the back of a stunning 34-goal debut season with Inter Milan and had scored four times up to the final with Brazil looking unstoppable.

However, something happened on the eve of the game with his health that changed the mood in the changing room.

Reports circulated before the match in Paris that he was taken off the team sheet, before being restored. Brazil were thumped 3-0 by hosts France.

Ronaldo played for both Real Madrid and Barcelona in his career and scored twice against Real in the 1996-97 campaign. Years later, wearing white, he would punish Barca up to four times in the biggest clash in Spanish football.

Today he says he is proud to see other Brazilians having success on the old continent.

“I feel really proud watching Brazilian players having success here in Europe. Rodrygo, Vinicius, Raphinha this year at Barcelona. He played really well at Leeds (United) in previous years. It really makes me proud to see Brazilians doing so well.”

The Thailand women’s volleyball team was on Friday night awarded 10 million baht for their impressive performances on the global stage this year.

The end-of-season awards ceremony was held by the Thailand Volleyball Association (TVA) at Golden Tulip Sovereign Hotel in Bangkok, as a morale boost and reward for athletes, coaches and staffers who represented Thailand in international tournaments this year.

TVA honorary president Phalakorn Suwannarat said the association had received around 16 million baht in sponsorship from the National Sports Development Fund, Sports Authority of Thailand, and private corporations this year. “We decided to reward the women’s national volleyball team with 10 million baht for their outstanding achievements in 2022,” he said.

Thailand’s spikers began the year by winning the 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam in May, grabbing their 13th consecutive title and 15th overall. In July, the team made history by qualifying for the final round of the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League for the first time before finishing eighth. August saw the team finish third in the 2022 Asian Women’s Volleyball Cup in the Philippines, before winning the Asean Grand Prix Women’s Volleyball Invitational 2022 held in Nakhon Ratchasima.

The Thai spikers then excelled at this month’s FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in Poland and the Netherlands, qualifying for the second round and beating Turkey, Croatia, South Korea and Dominican Republic before finally settling for 15th place.

Next year’s calendar features six major events – the SEA Games, Nations League, Asian Women’s Volleyball Cup, 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers, Asean Grand Prix, and Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.

“Killer Kid” Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong will face Mohammed Boutasaa, who hopes to use him as a stepping stone into the divisional rankings, in a featherweight kickboxing battle at ONE Fight Night 3: Lineker v Andrade at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur on October 22.

Sitthichai, the former Lumpinee Stadium world champion, has a record of 126-33-5, with 39 knockout wins.

Sitthichai, the former Lumpinee Stadium world champion, has a record of 126-33-5, with 39 knockout wins.

He was known for working his opponents over with low left kicks before finishing with a high left.

In his fight with Tawanchai PK Saenchai at ONE: Battleground III in August 2021, Sitthichai meticulously chopped away at his compatriot’s legs.

He paired his kicks with boxing to score a split-decision win, which is the only defeat Tawanchai has suffered inside the ONE Circle.

The Thai star is also well-known for his ruthless pressure as it was proved in his battle with Tayfun Ozcan in October 2021.

Sitthichai stayed close to Ozcan, preventing him from finding momentum. He set up combinations that forced the opponent to fight off the back foot, which caused judges to award him a split-decision win.

Boutasaa also has to consider Sitthichai’s stinging knees when preparing for the fight.

When Sitthichai faced Davit Kiria, he landed explosive combinations that he finished with knees before stepping beyond Kiria’s reach.

THE NATION

Substitute Mohamed Salah scored the fastest hat-trick in Champions League history as Liverpool came from behind to thrash Rangers 7-1 on Wednesday (October 12) and put themselves on the verge of qualification for the competition’s knockout stages.

Salah came off the bench in the second half with Liverpool leading 3-1 and fired a treble timed at six minutes and 12 seconds to turn a hard-fought win into a rout.

Roberto Firmino had dragged Liverpool back into the contest with a double strike and Darwin Nunez was also on the scoresheet before Harvey Elliott rounded off the scoring following Salah’s goals.

It appeared a much-changed Liverpool were in for further frustration in a disappointing season so far as they fell behind for the eighth time in all competitions after Scott Arfield slotted home 17 minutes in to lift the roof off Ibrox.

That lead lasted less than eight minutes, however, as Firmino continued his prolific season with a near-post header to level things up from a corner.

Liverpool were much the better team right from the off in the second half and deservedly edged back in front 10 minutes after the interval, Firmino converting Joe Gomez’s pinpoint low cross to take his goal tally to eight in all competitions.

With Rangers chasing the game, a fine finish from close-season signing Nunez put the game beyond the hosts before Salah took centre stage.

Elliott added to the home side’s embarrassment with a late seventh, putting the seal on a victory that means Liverpool are second in Group A, and need just one point from their final two matches to be sure of a spot in the knockout stages, while Rangers are bottom, without a point.

“We were really just on it and meeting us in the wrong moment is not cool (for opponents),” Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp said.

“All the goals we scored were exceptional. Mo (Salah) came on and is on fire and interprets the position really well. It is a night where things work out for us.”

Coming into the match, of the 45 teams to have played at least 50 games in the Champions League, only Anderlecht had a lower win rate than Rangers’ 12 victories in 65 games.

However, you would not have thought it at Ibrox, given how Rangers started. Former Liverpool forward Ryan Kent fired just over before Arfield found the bottom corner for Rangers’ first Champions League goal of the season, and first in 383 minutes in the competition.

The defending from the home side left much to be desired as Liverpool levelled through Firmino, but that was as good as it got for the visitors in the opening period, with Rangers missing several chances to retake the lead.

The second half was a different story altogether, and Rangers completely crumbled as Liverpool improved.

Nunez’s goal was as much to do with the hosts’ poor defending, while Salah was presented with gift after gift having come off the bench for only the final 22 minutes.

Salah’s incredible treble took him to 38 Champions League goals for Liverpool, now the most by any player for an English club in the competition, surpassing Didier Drogba for Chelsea and Sergio Aguero for Manchester City, who both have 36.

The stadium was empty as Elliott stroked home to complete a flattering scoreline for Liverpool, given they had struggled for much of the opening period.

THE NATION

Chelsea completed the double over AC Milan to top Champions League Group E with a 2-0 victory at San Siro on Tuesday (October 11), a match the hosts had to play the majority of with 10 men.

Looking to build on a 3-0 win over the Italians last week, Chelsea’s task in Milan’s famous old stadium was made all the more navigable after home defender Fikayo Tomori was sent off against his former club when conceding a 17th-minute penalty.

Jorginho converted from the spot after Milan’s protests had calmed down, before striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored for the third successive match in all competitions to double Chelsea’s lead in the 34th minute.

With the numerical disadvantage, chances were at a premium for Milan in the second half, full-back Sergino Dest wasting the best of them by blazing over from a good position.

Chelsea remained mostly untroubled though, with the victory moving them to seven points from four matches, a point ahead of RB Salzburg and three in front of Milan and Dinamo Zagreb.

“To come here and win is absolutely not straightforward,” Chelsea coach Graham Potter said after the match.

“The penalty, of course, and the red card, changes the complexion of the game. We still have to make the ten men count, which I think we did quite well. So, overall, we’re delighted with the three points; delighted with the clean sheet. And to score two goals is good.”

Qualification for the knockout stages looked like it may be a tall order for Chelsea after a shock defeat in their group opener at Dinamo Zagreb was followed by a disappointing home draw with Salzburg.

But victory over seven-time European Cup winners and Serie A champions Milan last week brought Chelsea right back into it — setting things up nicely for the return match in Italy.

England international Tomori’s foul on Mason Mount, however, effectively ended the match as a contest.

Tomori, who joined Milan from Chelsea in 2021, could not believe the referee showed him a straight red card, but the decision stood after a VAR review, as the 24-year-old became the first English player to get sent off in a Champions League game against an English side.

“I don’t believe it was the referee’s best evening tonight. That’s without a doubt,” Milan coach Stefano Pioli told a post-match news conference.

Cristiano Ronaldo reached another landmark in his remarkable career when he scored his 700th club goal to put Manchester United in front against Everton in the Premier League on Sunday (October 9).

The veteran forward, who has found minutes hard to come by under new United coach Erik ten Hag, was summoned off the bench in the first half at Goodison Park for the injured Anthony Martial, putting his team 2-1 in front 14 minutes after coming on.

It took him to the landmark of 700 strikes, 20 years and two days after his first goal for Sporting Lisbon as a scrawny teenager. He is now 10 club goals ahead of his once great rival Lionel Messi.

It was Ronaldo’s 144th goal for United across two spells at the club, added to five for Sporting, 450 for Real Madrid and 101 for Juventus.

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka scored twice, including a late winning penalty, as the hosts beat Liverpool 3-2 in a pulsating Premier League clash to send the Gunners back to the top of the table at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday (October 9).

Arsenal opened the scoring after 58 seconds, Gabriel Martinelli sweeping home a perfect pass from captain Martin Odegaard, but Liverpool grew into the game and Darwin Nunez levelled in the 34th minute.

There was a lengthy break midway through the first half as Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold received treatment for an ankle injury sustained in a tangle with Martinelli, and the England defender had to be replaced by Joe Gomez at halftime.

By then Arsenal were back in front, sweeping forward on the counter-attack as Martinelli turned provider, whipping the ball across the box for Saka to poke home a simple finish in first-half stoppage time.

Odegaard missed a golden opportunity to increase Arsenal’s lead after the break and two minutes later Liverpool’s Diogo Jota found Firmino with a perfectly weighted through ball for the Brazilian to slot across Aaron Ramsdale and into the net.

Arsenal came blazing back and a wild series of shots and blocks ended in a penalty when Liverpool’s Thiago Alcantara was adjudged to have fouled Gabriel Jesus and Saka made no mistake from the spot to put his side 3-2 up in the 76th minute.

It was enough to seal a win that takes Arsenal back into first place on 24 points, one ahead of second-placed Manchester City after nine games.

Liverpool’s disappointing start to the season continued, and their second league defeat leaves them in 10th spot on 10 points from eight games.

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta was delighted with how his side responded to Liverpool’s repeated comebacks.

“The threat that they have in any moment, they can open you up and they can exploit the spaces. I think they were very efficient the chances that they had,” he said

“But I think we showed a lot of composure and character in difficult moments to overcome them, especially the way we played in the second half,” he added.

Liverpool, in 10th place with 10 points after eight games, are enduring their worst start of Klopp’s seven-year reign and with second-placed Manchester City set to visit Anfield next Sunday, there is little time to put things right.

“We don’t have to look yet at the table but we know where we are without looking at it, so we are not done,” Klopp said after his side’s second defeat of the season.

Those two losses and four draws have left Liverpool trailing in the wake of Arsenal and City and though Klopp is frustrated by his side’s slow start, he is not looking for excuses.

“This game (against Arsenal) is gone now, we cannot just accept a situation and say it’s just not happening or whatever, we’re not kids,” he explained.

“We did a lot of good things, scored two really nice goals and played really good stuff against the team in form in the league, because we are probably the team not in form in the league.”

Klopp’s side face a quick turnaround as they visit Rangers in the Champions League in midweek before welcoming City and their free-scoring striker Erling Haaland to Merseyside next weekend.

Asked what he would be doing to lift his side ahead of those two matches Klopp said he would be getting back to basics.

“Working, talking, thinking probably first, and then talking to the boys, and then coaching them and helping them, and then we go again,” he said.
