THE NATION

Stamp Fairtex has proven that she is indeed a tough contender inside the ONE Championship Circle throughout her tenure in the organization.

The former two-sport ONE World Champion made that clear once again when she defeated Jihin “Shadow Cat” Radzuan by unanimous decision in their atomweight mixed martial arts bout at ONE Fight Night 2: Xiong vs. Lee III on 1 October.

Stamp now begins preparation for her next battle, which will see her taking on pound-for-pound striking great Anissa Meksen in a mixed rules super-fight at ONE Fight Night 6 on 14 January in Bangkok, Thailand.

Now that the dust has settled after ONE Fight Night 2, fans have begun talking about how Stamp’s showdown with Meksen will go down, and how the skills she used to beat Jihin will transfer to her next match against “C18.”

The Thai megastar stayed in control for the majority of her three-round battle against Jihin. Her Malaysian opponent, undoubtedly, arrived at the Singapore Indoor Stadium ready to throw down. But Stamp seemed laser-focused on showing the world that she could stay in charge wherever the action went.

Her ever-improving ground game seemed to have taken another step-up against “Shadow Cat,” herself a proven force on the canvas. The 24-year-old moved from position to position with ease and even caught her rival in a tight rear-naked choke in the second round. Radzuan worked her way out, but she was questioned again later when Stamp attempted a heel hook before she pulled her into guard.

The bout with Meksen will feature Muay Thai and MMA rounds, so if the top-ranked atomweight contender can survive her French foe’s onslaught in the striking department, she will most likely have the upperhand when the rules switch and the action can move to the ground.

But, judging by her most recent bout, there is every chance Stamp will also be able to bring it to “C18” on the feet.

The Fairtex gym standout landed heavy blows on Jihin throughout their tussle, including a lethal elbow that nearly brought the proceedings to an end. On top of that, her relentless pressure made it hard for “Shadow Cat” to regroup and find her footing.

This intensity will come in handy when she meets Meksen early next year. The French-Algerian fighter holds a striking record of 103-5 and has the power to stop opponents in their tracks. But if Stamp can bring the same game to her matchup with Meksen, she might scoring a decisive victory over the combative striker in that department.

Before the mixed rules super-fight goes down at ONE Fight Night 6, stay tuned to catch all the action at ONE 162: Zhang v Di Bella on Friday, 21 October, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Ten Hag will clearly be hoping for a similar outcome to that previous overseas trip, as the Reds look to build on the comfortable 2-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol.

Ten Hag reveals team news for Thursday

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 06, 2022

THE NATION

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has provided the latest on his plans for our Europa League away tie against Omonia Nicosia.

Erik Ten Hag faced the media at Carrington before flying out with his squad for Thursday’s 17:45 BST kick-off in Cyprus.

After defenders Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, plus midfielder Donny van de Beek, were missing from the morning’s open training session at Carrington, their injury situation was one of the first topics posed to Erik during the briefing.

“They are unavailable for tomorrow,” said Ten Hag of the aforementioned quartet.

“Yes, in the case of Rapha, I have good hope [that he comes back soon].

“Harry will take a little bit longer. The other two, I cannot give a prognosis.”

The manager added that everybody else is training well and, of course, he will have plenty of options in attack, with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial fit again.

We hope to announce the travelling squad in full this afternoon.

TEN HAG: CASEMIRO AND SCOTT ARE BOTH IMPORTANT FOR US

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag explained that Scott McTominay has earned his recent minutes on the pitch for the Reds with good performances.

Before Sunday’s derby defeat, the Scotland international had started in each of the five wins from our previous six games, only missing the defeat to Real Sociedad in our Europa League opener.

His success in a deeper midfield role this season has potentially limited the minutes of new signing Casemiro since his summer arrival, with Ten Hag saying that the Brazilian’s lack of starts in a United shirt so far (one) isn’t down to anything the South American has done.

Ten Hag reveals team news for Thursday

“I said already before, it had nothing to do with Casemiro, it was all to do with Scott because, when you look at Brentford, he wasn’t in the team [and] we lose. Then [from] the day that Casemiro signed, we played six games and we won five,” Erik told reporters when asked about Casemiro’s playing time in his pre-Omonia press conference.

“And, in five games, he [McTominay] played. In one game, he didn’t, and that was against [Real] Sociedad [a 1-0 loss]. So, for me, that was logical [to play McTominay] because it’s competition in the team. For me, it wasn’t a choice [not to play him].

“He performed really well, he developed really well and it had nothing to do with Casemiro, but I’m sure Casemiro will play a really important role.”
Despite Casemiro having to be patient at present, Erik has no doubt that the five-times Champions League winner has an integral part to play in his United side in the future.

“We know all his background, we know all the titles he won. You see every day in training, he can contribute in this team, and he will be a really important player for this team,” the Dutchman continued.

“So, we will see what will happen but I’m convinced that will happen.”

The competition for places in midfield, heightened by the having the pair as options, makes the manager’s team selection for Thursday’s Europa League game at Omonia all the more intriguing.

Ten Hag says that he will pick the best side available to him, as we go in search of back-to-back wins in the competition.

“First of all, it doesn’t make a difference – Europa League, Premier League. We have to win in all the leagues and all the cups.

“So, today, we will play our best team and we have to construct the team because also we want a competitive culture in our team, in this club.”

Leaky Liverpool may have to learn how to defend differently, says Klopp

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 04, 2022

Liverpool are conceding too many similar goals in their matches this season and the players may need to get “back to basics” to tighten the defence to return to winning ways, manager Juergen Klopp said on Monday (October 3).

Famed for their counter-pressing style which helped Liverpool compete on all four fronts last season, Klopp’s side have leaked goals this season and kept only two clean sheets in all competitions.

A 3-3 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion dropped Liverpool to ninth in the Premier League standings and Klopp said they would have to come out of the crisis in a similar way to when they lost several defenders to injuries two seasons ago.

Liverpool have won only three games this season and Klopp compared the squad’s crisis in confidence to that of Cristiano Ronaldo, whose form tapered off and led to the Manchester United forward being benched.

Rangers lost both their group games without scoring to sit bottom of Group A and Klopp said he expects the Scottish side — who lost the Europa League final on penalties last season — to be pumped up after Saturday’s 4-0 league victory over Hearts.

THE NATION

Muay Thai legend Buakaw Banchamek is plotting revenge this month when he faces the only fighter to have knocked him out in his long and storied career.

Buakaw will be looking to settle a score when he enters the ring against Japanese boxer Yoshihiro Sato at Rajadamnern Stadium in Bangkok on October 28.

Sato knocked Buakaw unconscious in their quarter-final bout of the K1 World Max 2008 at Nippon Budokan Arena in Tokyo. Buakaw partially avenged that knockout loss in 2013 with a victory by decision over the Japanese fighter. Now, he will get the opportunity to do what Sato did to him in 2008, when the two fighters share a ring for the first time in over 10 years in their Rajadamnern World Series (RWS) exhibition match.

The bout of legends follows August’s successful match between Buakaw and Japanese fan favourite Kota Miura, said Global Sport Ventures CEO Thainchai Pisitwuttinan.

“We sold out that night and had to close ticket offices because we could not have more people inside the stadium,” he said.

Buakaw knocked out Kota in the third round after pounding the Japanese with punches and kicks.

Inspired by kickboxing fans’ hunger to see legends in the ring, Global Sport Ventures decided to put on another monumental fight for the fans this month, Thainchai said.

Erling Haaland had already exceeded expectations since arriving at Manchester City yet he managed to endear himself to his new club even more with his third consecutive home Premier League hat-trick in the 6-3 drubbing of Manchester United on Sunday (October 2),

In another remarkable display, Haaland also contributed two assists for Phil Foden, who struck a treble as well.

The Norwegian’s goal haul moved him on to 14 strikes in eight Premier League games, double the amount of the league’s second-top scorer Harry Kane.

He also destroyed another Premier League record by becoming the fastest player in England’s top-flight to score three hat-tricks in only eight matches. The previous record holder was Michael Owen, who needed 48 games to reach the milestone for Liverpool.

City manager Pep Guardiola was not surprised by Haaland’s latest tour de force, highlighting his insatiable scoring record with previous sides Molde, RB Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund as well as City, firing 152 goals since turning professional in 2016.

He took no credit for the way the striker has started his career with City, instead pointing to the genes he was blessed with from his mother Gry Marita Braut, a heptathlete, and his father, the former City and Norway midfielder Alfie Haaland.

“I said many times what he is doing this season he had done in Norway, Austria, Germany, that is a reality. The quality we have helps him but I didn’t teach him what he has done,” Guardiola said.

“Having incredible instinct and sense comes from his mum and dad, he was born with that, we just help him by producing more balls for him.”

Haaland breaks new ground for Man City as blistering start continues

Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said a lack of belief was the reason his side capitulated so badly against their local rivals.

“We lacked belief from the start,” Ten Hag said. “In the last five games we had a strong belief, today it was the other way around.

“We are not defending front foot and we let them play. In possession we were not brave enough, made mistakes and bad decisions, then you get hammered.

“There are never excuses in top football, you have to bring results, but it is normal in our process we will have setbacks. We just have to learn from it.”

Ten Hag also explained why substitute Anthony Martial was the man he turned to in the second half to try and get United back in the match, rather than Cristiano Ronaldo, and why big-money signing Casemiro was again overlooked for a starting spot.

“I wouldn’t bring him [Ronaldo] in out of respect for his big career,” Ten Hag added. “Anthony Martial needed the minutes and he scored two goals.

“When we signed him [Casemiro] we started to win. It is about the team, and the team was doing really well.

“Scott McTominay has been performing well, but I am sure Casemiro will be important for us in the long run, and find himself in the team in the short term. That will come in a natural way.”
