Kerber overcomes qualifier to reach Indian Wells 4th round

sports March 12, 2019 06:16

By AFP

Three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber came from a set down against qualifier Natalia Vikhlyantseva on Monday to reach the WTA Indian Wells fourth round.

Eighth-ranked Kerber, a two-time semi-finalist in the California desert, shook off a slow start to beat the 112th-ranked Russian 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

After dropping her serve in the first game of the second set, Kerber won seven games in a row to force a third set and take a 2-0 lead in the decider.

She was unable to convert four match points against Vikhlyantseva’s serve at 5-1 and was broken at love when serving for the match at 5-2 before finally putting it away.

Defending champion Naomi Osaka, whose Australian Open triumph propelled her to number one in the world, headlines the battles for a place in the round of 16 when she takes on American Danielle Collins in the night session on Stadium Court.

Osaka opened her campaign with a straight-sets victory over Kristina Mladenovic, avenging her shock loss to the French player at Dubai in February.

Collins is trying to build on a breakout run at the Australian Open, where she fell in the semi-finals to two-time Wimbledon champion Petro Kvitova.

Osaka won their only prior meeting in Beijing last year 6-1, 6-0, a result that left Collins eager for “another crack” at the world number one.

“There is no way it could go any worse for me,” Collins said. “That’s really as bad as it can get in terms of the score and how quickly the match went.”

Fifth-seeded Czech Karolina Pliskova survived an off day to reach the round of 16 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Belgian qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure.

“The only good thing was my serve today, with a lot of aces and service winners,” Pliskova said. “Overall, I think my game was a bit bad. The conditions changed from my last match, but hopefully in the next match I can play better.”

Whatever her struggles, Pliskova — winner of her 12th WTA title at Brisbane in January and a semi-finalist at the Australian Open — needed just 66 minutes to get past Bonaventure.

In her next match, she said, she’ll “have to be more careful”.

That will be against Estonian Anett Kontaveit, who was leading 5-0 against 11th-seeded Anastasija Sevastova when the Latvian retired from their match.

Zinedine Zidane returns to Real Madrid

Zinedine Zidane returns to Real Madrid

sports March 12, 2019 05:06

By AFP

Zinedine Zidane has made a sensational return as coach of Real Madrid after Santiago Solari’s sacking was finally confirmed on Monday.

Zidane has been given a contract until June 2022, just nine months after he resigned at the end of last season, having led Madrid to an historic third consecutive Champions League triumph.

Solari’s dismissal was expected after three consecutive home defeats – to Barcelona, twice, and Ajax – deemed Madrid’s season all-but over before the middle of March.

But Zidane coming back, with only 11 games left in La Liga and almost nothing to play for, is a surprise, particularly after he left on the incredible high of yet another European triumph.

“Real Madrid’s board has decided to terminate Santiago Solari’s contract as coach of the first team,” read an official statement on Monday.

“Real Madrid appreciates the work done by Santiago Solari and the commitment and loyalty he has always shown to this club.

“The board has also agreed to the appointment of Zinedine Zidane as the new coach of Real Madrid with immediate effect for the remainder of the season and the next three, until June 30, 2022.”

Like Solari, Zidane had been in charge of Real Madrid’s reserve side, Castilla, when he was promoted in January 2016. Madrid finished second that year before going on to win La Liga in Zidane’s first full season in charge.

They were unable to repeat the feat last term and finished 17 points behind Barcelona but domestic disappointment was almost forgotten as Zidane again oversaw success in Europe, with a victory over Liverpool in the final in Kiev.

Immensely popular with most of the players, Zidane’s appointment will almost certainly lift morale in the dressing room, following a week in which captain Sergio Ramos has reportedly argued with club president Florentino Perez and been involved in a training ground spat with Marcelo.

Gareth Bale was one of the few to suffer during Zidane’s previous spell in charge, with the pair barely on speaking terms in the run-up to the Champions League final. Bale’s future now appears in serious doubt unless their relationship can be quickly repaired.

The Welshman might have left last summer had Zidane stayed but instead it was Cristiano Ronaldo that departed and the Frenchman now takes over a team missing the Portugese’s goals and in urgent need of reform.

Despite Madrid’s dominance in the Champions League, there is ground to make up in La Liga, where Barcelona are on course to seal their eighth league title in 11 years.

Madrid sit 12 points adrift of Barca in the table despite a 4-1 victory over Real Valladolid on Sunday, which proved to be Solari’s final game in charge.

Solari was handed a contract until 2021 after overseeing an improvement following the sacking of Julen Lopetegui in November.

But familiar problems, including a lack of goals and a leaky defence, resurfaced in February as a defeat at home to Girona was quickly followed by losses to Barcelona in the league and cup, and humiliation by Ajax in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Grandstand finish: Dovi wins the duel by just 0.023 but five riders battle for glory

Dovizioso, Marquez, Crutchlow, Rins and Rossi within six tenths in a stunner of a season opener and post-race protests are denied with an appeals process ongoing

At the VisitQatar Grand Prix, the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel received various protests concerning aerodynamic devices on the rear swing arm of Ducati machinery ridden by Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati Team), Danilo Petrucci (Mission Winnow Ducati Team) and Jack Miller (Alma Pramac Racing).

The protests were made by Aprilia Racing Team Gresini, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, Repsol Honda Team and Team Suzuki Ecstar, who presented their concerns to the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel. Based on guidelines and regulations currently in force, the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel rejected their protests.

The result of the VisitQatar Grand Prix remains in standing. An appeals process is ongoing.

High expectations and a million questions: that’s what lay before the grid as the lights went out for the VisitQatar Grand Prix and it didn’t disappointment. The closest top fifteen of all time and another duel to the finish – with another trio right behind – made it a stunner of a season opener…with a familiar name on top: Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati Team). It was a familiar name diving down the inside at the final corner too, as Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) rolled the dice once again – just 0.023 off ‘DesmoDovi’ over the line. Behind that classic duel that defines a rivalry came another battle but this time of three, with Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) pulling out all the stops to complete the podium and fend off Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) and a late-charging Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP).

It was Dovizioso who got the holeshot from pole, he and Jack Miller (Alma Pramac Racing) grabbing P1 and P2 into Turn 1 as Marquez held position just behind. Polesitter Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) didn’t get the start he would have been aiming for as he dropped to sixth on Lap 1, with Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) and teammate Crutchlow catapulting through to the top five.

The race then began to settle into a rhythm, with a train of riders at the front led by Dovizioso keeping a steady pace at the front. Rins was the man on the move on Lap 4 as the Spaniard made more progress after a sharp start from P10 on the grid, the Suzuki man coming through to take the lead by Lap 5 before the Spaniard duelled Dovizioso for the pleasure. It remained a lead group of nine following each other line astern, however, with no one breaking rank just yet.

On Lap 12 the number 04 was back at the front, and the pace then turned up a notch as he and Marquez started to create a gap back to third place Danilo Petrucci (Mission Winnow Ducati), who’d made his way through the group. The pace then slowed again, however, as Dovizioso went from a 1:55.3 to a 1:56.1 to bring the top eight back to within just over a second…

With seven to go, the top eight were covered 1.2 seconds and that’s when Rossi really started to make up ground, picking off his teammate first and then Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) to go up to P6. With three laps to go the fight for the win became a five-way scrap, with Petrucci, Viñales and Mir fading off the pacesetters.

Reigning World Champion Marquez had got the better of Dovizioso on the penultimate lap, but the Ducati struck back down the straight. Crutchlow held P3, Rins P4 and Rossi P5, menacing behind and waiting for the fireworks to begin in the lead. Pushing hard, Marquez had a slight moment with the front at Turn 3, before making a lunge up the inside of Dovi at Turn 10. He couldn’t keep it though as the Desmosedici was able to cut back up the inside on the exit, setting up another classic grandstand finish.

It looked like a carbon copy of 12 months ago at the final corner, but it was the same edge-of-the-seat heart-in-your-mouth moment as Marquez dove through on the inside, sitting up Dovi but running wide as he couldn’t quite get it stopped in time. From there it was another classic point and shoot contest to the line as both gunned it on the exit, but Dovizioso couldn’t be caught and made it out ahead. It was closer than before though, with an infinitesimal 0.023 separating the two as the flag waved. Behind, Crutchlow kept his cool to take a remarkable podium on his first race back since his huge Australian GP crash, with Rins a valiant P4 and Rossi again proving you should never count ‘The Doctor’ out. P5 from P14 on the grid was another impressive race day showing from the nine-time World Champion.

Petrucci would have to settle for P6 on his maiden factory Ducati ride, 2.320 behind his teammate in the end, with polesitter Viñales crossing the line 0.161 back from ‘Petrux’, in P7. Mir produced a fantastic rookie ride to finish just over five seconds off the race win in P8, with the Spaniard beating ninth place Nakagami and tenth place Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) – and just 9.636 covering the top 10 in Qatar.

Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) was just 0.011 behind Espargaro in P11 on his debut ride for Yamaha, with Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), Jorge Lorenzo (Repsol Honda Team), Andrea Iannone (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) and Johann Zarco (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) completing the point scoring positions.

So who was the ride of the day? Far from the podium in the end and not scoring any points on his debut, an argument could be made for Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) regardless. The rookie was forced into a pitlane start after issues on the grid ahead of the Warm Up lap, and set about unleashing some almighty pace and nerves of steel for a first ever premier class appearance. Fastest laps flowed from the Frenchman and he was soon into point-scoring contention…although sadly, it wouldn’t last. Too much too early in a bid to catch the group ahead saw Quartararo fade back to P16 by the flag – but only eight tenths off Zarco. Fellow debutant Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) also impressed and, for some time, was top KTM, before fading slightly, a fate that also befell Mir further forward as they all aim to gain more full-length race experience. Final rookie Francesco Bagnaia (Alma Pramac Racing) suffered a DNF, with more to come from him in Argentina for sure, and his more veteran teammate Jack Miller also suffered some bad luck. The Australian fell victim to some problem with his machine that saw him drop from podium contention to suddenly outside the top ten, then retiring before the end of the race.

That’s all she wrote from Qatar but what a story it was. Records broken and history made, five riders in six tenths makes for an awesome opener…even before looking at the winning margin of 0.023. But then, past the stats, it’s much more than a numbers game and always has been. Dedication, precision, passion, talent, confidence, pressure, potential, evolution, rivalry…and respect. This is MotoGP™ and we’re back in business. Tune in for the Gran Premio Motul de la Republica Argentina on March 31st for more, because we’ve only just begun.

Japan’s Momota, China’s Chen take All England Open titles

sports March 11, 2019 08:20

Kento Momota became the first Japanese man to win the AllEngland Open on Sunday, while China’s Chen Yufei was the surprise women’s champion.

Momota is the reigning world champion, Asian champion and world number one and he can now add success in badminton’s oldest tournament to his glittering CV.

The 24-year-old held his nerve to win 21-11, 15,21, 21-15 against Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen.

“Winning this tournament has been a dream from my childhood and having won this it is a really big moment in my life, and gives me a lot of confidence,” Momota said.

“The second game I played defensively against some very powerful shots from Viktor but in the final game I knew I couldn’t carry on like that.

“So I didn’t play particular tactics I just gave all I had and did my best.”

Momota hopes his success can inspire more Japanese players to excel at the sport.

“I hope this win will help raise the badminton level in Japan. I’m going to keep improving myself so that everybody can be helped along with me,” he added.

The women’s singles title is back in Chinese hands for the first time in five years after Chen shocked defending champion Tai Tzu Ying.

The last Chinese winner was Wang Shixian in 2014, but 21-year-old Chen ended that barren run with a 21-17, 21-17 victory.

Tai had been looking for an historic hat-trick of titles and Chen admitted she didn’t expect to come off court as a winner against such an illustrious opponent.

Tai previously had an 11-0 record against Chen and had only dropped one set in the tournament.

“I was over-excited. I didn’t expect to win the Championship title in straight games,” Chen smiled.

“When I express my joy I feel like I lose my physical composure, that’s why I fell to the ground.

“I think I am more mature both mentally and physically compared to last year.

“I kept my pace on the court today, I think that’s probably the reason why I won.”

Liverpool restate Premier League credentials as Arsenal end Man Utd run

sports March 11, 2019 07:56

Liverpool cut Manchester City’s lead at the top of the PremierLeague to a single point on Sunday as Manchester United slipped to their first domestic defeat under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Arsenal.

Chelsea earlier needed a last-gasp equaliser from Eden Hazard to earn a 1-1 draw against Wolves as the race for the four Champions League qualification spots heats up.

Just four points separate third-placed Tottenham, on 61 points, and Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea in sixth, with Arsenal in fourth position and United in fifth.

A disappointing run of results has badly dented Liverpool’s bid for a first English league title since 1990 and fans’ nerves were jangling after they fell behind against struggling Burnley at Anfield on Sunday.

But Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane both scored twice as Jurgen Klopp’s team battled back to win 4-2, lifting them to 73 points, one behind Pep Guardiola’s City, who saw off Watford on Saturday.

“The message from today is that nobody gets rid of us,” said a defiant Klopp, whose team had won just two of their previous six Premier League matches. “We had the perfect mixture of fighting the opponent and playing football.

“All we have to do is make sure that we stay in this really interesting competition on top of the table. We have no problem with confidence, we’re in a good moment.”

United travelled to the Emirates Stadium brimming with confidence after their astonishing Champions League comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.

Solskjaer had won 13 and drawn two of his previous domestic 15 league and cup fixtures since succeeding the sacked Jose Mourinho in mid-December but they fell behind in the 12th minute, when Granit Xhaka’s strike from distance swerved through the air to wrong-foot United goalkeeper David de Gea.

– Champions League race –

Both teams went close thereafter, with Fred hitting a post and Romelu Lukaku guilty of wasting some gilt-edged chances but the home side doubled their lead midway through the second half when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored from the penalty spot after Fred was penalised for bringing down Alexandre Lacazette.

Arsenal’s 2-0 victory lifted Unai Emery’s side into fourth, just one point behind north London rivals Spurs and meant they leapfrogged United in the process as they target a return to the Champions League after two seasons away from Europe’s top club competition.

“We created so many more chances today than when we beat them in the FA Cup,” said Solskjaer. “Sometimes it happens, we hit the woodwork twice and had five very big chances ourselves. The referee will be disappointed when he sees it as I don’t think it is a penalty.

“We just had to go for it towards the end, but we were not really at it and it is one of those days where you have to dust yourselves down from.”

Emery said his players had given their all “against the best team at this moment”.

“We were playing very competitive for 90 minutes and I think we deserved this victory,” he said. “We can be happy today. We knew Manchester United could use different tactics but we wanted to impose our gameplan and I think we did that.”

The win was soured by an incident in which a fan ran onto the pitch and appeared to push United’s Chris Smalling after the spot-kick. It followed an incident in the earlier Championship game, when Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish was punched by a pitch invader during the match against Birmingham.

Arsenal later announced the fan had been arrested.

Earlier, Hazard came to Chelsea’s rescue in injury time, firing in from long range to grab a point against Wolves at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea enjoyed the bulk of the possession but Wolves took the lead through Raul Jimenez in the 56th minute with their first shot on goal after an incisive counter-attack and looked on track for an impressive win until Hazard struck.

City beat Watford 3-1 on Saturday thanks to Raheem Sterling’s 13-minute hat-trick but Spurs, on the fringes of the title race just two weeks ago, slumped to their third Premier League defeat in just four games against Southampton.

There were also wins on Saturday for Brighton, Cardiff, Bournemouth, Leicester and Newcastle.

Arsenal inflict first domestic defeat on Solskjaer to surge into top four

sports March 11, 2019 07:54

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blamed Manchester United’s lack of ruthlessness as the Norwegian suffered his first domestic defeat as caretaker manager in a 2-0 loss at Arsenal on Sunday.

Granit Xhaka’s early strike and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang’s penalty 21 minutes from time saw Gunners leapfrog United into the Premier League top four.

Unai Emery’s men also close to within just a point of third-placed Tottenham and now hold the upper hand in the race for Champions League qualification.

Arsenal do not face any of the top six in their remaining eight league games, whilst United host title-chasing Manchester City and Chelsea in the coming weeks on top of their Champions League and FA Cup commitments.

“You have to be disappointed with the result, but the performance was a good one,” said Solskjaer.

“The first goal always dictates how the game goes. We created chances, big chances, hit the woodwork twice, (Bernd) Leno played well.

“In terms of what you can control, we shouldn’t be too disappointed.”

European trips to France for both sides in midweek produced vastly contrasting results as United shocked free-spending Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The Gunners on the other hand went down 3-1 to Rennes to give themselves a mountain to climb in Thursday’s second leg to reach the last eight of the Europa League.

Emery made five changes from that side and was rewarded with a vital victory.

“We are going to play difficult matches and being consistent is very important,” said Emery. “At the moment I think we are playing consistently, but we need to be calm and patient.”

– De Gea not distracted –

After a bright start, Arsenal were nearly hit with a sucker punch when with United’s first attack, Romelu Lukaku turned Luke Shaw’s cross onto the crossbar for the first of a series of wasted chances for the Belgian striker.

However, at the other end it was the normally flawless David de Gea who was at fault for the opener as the Spaniard failed to read the swerve on Xhaka’s long-range strike 12 minutes in.

Solskjaer, though, rejected suggestions ongoing contract talks over a new deal for the United goalkeeper has effected his concentration.

“David’s really focused and concentrated, he’s too professional to let his mind wander,” insisted Solskjaer.

United seemed to feel the after-effects of their heroics in Paris early on, but soon clicked into gear to look more like the side that had suffered just one defeat in Solskjaer’s first 17 games in charge.

Fred’s curling effort from outside the box clipped the post before Lukaku tried to round Bernd Leno, but the Arsenal goalkeeper stood up well to block.

The German stopper had an unconvincing start to life as Arsenal number one, but has looked ever more assured in recent weeks and made another huge save to deny Lukaku once more from close range six minutes into the second-half.

United were utterly dominant for the first 20 minutes of the second period, but to Solskjaer’s frustration conceded a penalty when Alexandre Lacazette charged into the area and hit the floor under minimal contact from Fred.

“I don’t think there is enough contact to warrant the penalty,” said Solskjaer, while even Emery categorised the award as “soft.”

Aubameyang missed a last-minute penalty to win the north London derby against Tottenham last weekend, but made no mistake to leave the visitors a mountain to climb.

“I knew it would be tough, but I was really confident,” said the Gabon international.

Solskjaer’s time at United as a player and over the past three months as boss has been littered with late drama, none more so than at PSG on Wednesday.

That was a Champions League night that will live long in the memory, but there was no turnaround this time to leave the Red Devils with plenty of work to do just to qualify for the competition next season.

Illness ends Serena’s Indian Wells bid, No. 2 Halep advances

sports March 11, 2019 07:52

Serena Williams’s first tournament since the Australian Open came to an abrupt end on Sunday as the ailing 23-time Grand Slam champion retired from her third-round WTA match against Garbine Muguruza at Indian Wells.

Muguruza was leading 6-3, 1-0 when Williams called it a day in the battle of former world number ones because of a viral illness.

“Before the match, I did not feel great, and then it just got worse with every second; extreme dizziness and extreme fatigue,” Williams said in comments released via tournament organizers.

The 10th-seeded American, continuing to work her way back up the rankings in the wake of time off to have a baby, had made a strong start, winning the first three games.

But she called for the trainer after dropping six straight to Muguruza.

After a long talk with medical personnel Williams took the court for the second set, but after Muguruza held serve at love Williams called a halt.

“By the score, it might have looked like I started well, but I was not feeling at all well physically,” Williams said. “I will focus on getting better and start preparing for Miami.”

Muguruza, currently ranked 20th in the world, was sorry to see the match end the way it did, even though it put her through to a fourth-round meeting with seventh-seeded Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, a  7-6 (12/10), 6-4 winner over Britain’s Johanna Konta.

“We’ve played many times and it’s always super-tough, super-exciting,” Muguruza said of Williams. “I wish I’m going to see her soon and feeling better.”

In fact their five prior meetings all came in Grand Slams, the last two in finals. Williams beat the Spaniard for the Wimbledon title in 2015 and Muguruza walked off with the 2016 French Open crown.

It was a tough draw for Williams, who defeated former world number one Victoria Azarenka in her second-round opener.

World number two Simona Halep had her hands full with Ukrainian qualifier Kateryna Kozlova but emerged with a 7-6 (7/3), 7-5 victory in her first meeting with the 114th-ranked player.

“It was really difficult against her because I never played against her — it was a bit difficult to get a rhythm,” Halep said.

There were service breaks aplenty as Halep and Kozlova traded four on the way to the first-set tiebreaker and four more to open the second set.

Halep’s two holds — sandwiched around another break of Kozlova’s serve — put the Romanian up 5-2 but she was broken serving for the match and needed one last break of Kozlova’s serve in the final game to clinch it with a backhand up the line.

“When I was leading the match, she played without fear, I felt like she was playing much better in those games,” Halep said.

“It was difficult for me to close those sets, but I’m actually proud that I could do that,” added the Romanian.

Halep next faces 61st-ranked Czech Marketa Vondrousova, who followed up her win over 2018 finalist Daria Kasatkina with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over 22nd seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia.

Chiang Rai – PROM MEESAWAT claimed his |second victory in the Bt5-million Singha Thailand Masters yesterday, 20 years after his first at the Santiburi Country Club.

The 34-year-old from Hua Hin, who triumphed at this course when he was just a 14-year-old amateur in 1999, recovered from two opening bogeys yesterday to fire a final 72 for a total 12-under-par 276, beating young gun Sarit Suwannarat by one shot.

“It’s been a long time since the first victory. But this time it’s very special as I won as a professional player,” said Prom who survived a scare from the 21-year-old Sarit on the final hole to seal the victory.

The big-hitting Sarit trailed the former champion by two shots going to the 18th hole. The rising star had a three-foot birdie chance but missed, before Prom ended with a bogey. Had Sarit made the putt, he would have been in a play-off for the second straight year.

“I had a bad start. But I kept telling myself to be patient as the pins and the course are playing tough. I knew other guys were not shooting scores as well. After I got myself back to even par at the front nine, I tried to be calm and keep fighting,” added Prom, who finally pocketed the prize money (Bt750,000) that was denied him two decades ago due to amateur status.

Prom dedicated his win to his family, including its latest addition – four-month-old son “Bhuthep” who joins three-year-old daughter Metra.

“I will go back to celebrate this win with my family and my babies. But I also have to go back to practise for two Asian Tour events in Malaysia [March 21] and India [March 28],” added Prom who put an end to a title drought of title stretching back to 2014 and the Yeander Tournament Players Championship in Taiwan.

This is his sixth All Thailand Golf Tour victory after the 1999 Singha Masters, the 2005 TPC Tour Championships and the 2006, 2011, 2012 Singha Pattaya Open.

Sarit Suwannarat

Despite missing a chance to force a play-off, Sarit was content with his performance given he picked up a golf club for the first time in three weeks only six days ago after a toe injury.

“That birdie putt was crucial but I misread the lie. Overall I’m happy with how I have played this week as I just came back from injury,” said Sarit, hoping to win one of the home Asian Tour events – the Thailand Open, Queen’s Cup and Royal Cup – this year.

“I plan to do well on the ADT Tour so that I can get an Asian Tour card next year. But If I can win a home Asian Tour, I can get the card automatically,” he added.

Sterling hat-trick takes City four clear, Southampton stun fading Spurs

sports March 10, 2019 13:05

Raheem Sterling’s rapid second-half hat-trick moved Manchester City four points clear at the top of the Premier League with a 3-1 win over Watford as Tottenham’s hopes of a top-four finish faltered again in a 2-1 defeat to Southampton on Saturday.

The Saints’ spirited second-half comeback ensured they remain two points above the relegation zone despite Cardiff’s 2-0 win over West Ham, while victory for Brighton and Newcastle also boosted their survival hopes.

City and Sterling had fortune on their side to end Watford’s resistence after a goalless first-half.

A minute into the second period Sterling was initially flagged offside as Daryl Janmaat’s attempted clearance ricocheted off the England winger and into the net.

However, after a long discussion with his assistant, referee Paul Tierney awarded the goal because Janmaat’s intervention meant Sterling was onside.

“The first goal will be debated. I don’t like this situation but it is what it is. I’m sorry if it was offside but we deserved to win,” said City boss Pep Guardiola.

“Next season, hopefully, we will have VAR and it will be clear.”

There was no doubt when Sterling rounded off a fine team move involving David Silva and Riyad Mahrez four minutes later.

Sterling then completed his hat-trick with some neat footwork from Silva’s pass before Watford substitute Gerard Deulofeu pulled a goal back just 22 seconds after coming on.

– Spurs on the slide –

Tottenham reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League in midweek, but are now in grave danger of missing out on that competition completely next season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side remain in third but their lead over Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea is a precarious one with all three chasers in action on Sunday.

“The second-half we did not take it seriously. I don’t want to criticise too much but when you lose a game that was under control after 45 minutes, should be 3-0, 4-0 and finishes in 2-1 defeat, it is difficult to accept,” said Pochettino, who was serving the first of a two-game touchline ban.

“When you lose the momentum after 45 minutes, that is about mentality, that is about being strong and keeping the right. For us, we lost the momentum and gave them relief.”

Dele Alli made his return after seven weeks out with a hamstring injury and the England midfielder teed up Harry Kane to score his 200th career goal on 26 minutes.

However, Spurs’ wastefulness in failing to add to their lead came back to cost them as Ralph Hassenhuettl’s men improved markedly after the break and secured a vital three points in their attempt to beat the drop.

Fresh from scoring his first professional goal away to Manchester United last weekend, right-back Yan Valery levelled from Stuart Armstrong’s cross.

James Ward-Prowse then completed the comeback with a stunning free-kick curled into the top corner to leave Hugo Lloris helpless.

“The manager told us to be a bit more aggressive, we sat off them a little in the first half. The second half epitomised everything he has done for us so far,” said Ward-Prowse.

Newcastle remain six points above the relegation zone and moved up to 13th after coming from 2-0 down to beat Everton 3-2.

Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez’s double in the final 25 minutes earned the Magpies a deserved victory after Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison put the visitors in front.

Brendan Rodgers secured his first win as Leicester boss thanks to Jamie Vardy’s double to beat Fulham, who are now 13 points adrift of safety, 3-1.

Vardy’s first goal was his 100th for the Foxes.

“He’s showed over the last couple of years that he’s a world-class striker,” said Rodgers. “I’m just really glad that he’s here. He’s a brilliant focal point for the team.”

Huddersfield also look dead and buried as Bournemouth cruised to their first away win since October with a 2-0 victory at the John Smith’s Stadium thanks to goals from Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser.

Cardiff, though, gave themselves hope as early goals in each half from Junior Hoilett and Victor Camarasa gave the Welsh side a precious three points over a hugely disappointing West Ham.

Brighton also secured a much-needed win to move level on points with rivals Crystal Palace, five above the drop zone, as Anthony Knockaert’s stunning strike 16 minutes from time earned a 2-1 win.

Singing superstar Jennifer Lopez and retired baseball great Alex Rodriguez have been one of the most glam celebrity couples in recent years. Fans, get ready: a J-Rod wedding is on the cards.

Lopez and Rodriguez confirmed on Instagram late Saturday that they are engaged.

Both posted a picture of their hands at sunset, with Lopez’s enormous diamond ring.

While the multi-hyphenate singer-actress-dancer-producer only captioned the pic with heart emojis, Rodriguez went a bit farther, writing in lower-case letters: “she said yes.”

Lopez, 49, and Rodriguez, 43, have been a couple for about two years.

Lopez, currently the executive producer and judge on NBC reality dance competition show “World of Dance,” is set to go on tour later this year across North America. She wrapped up a Vegas residency in 2018.

She has been married three times: to Ojani Noa, back-up dancer Cris Judd, and singer Marc Anthony, with whom she has 11-year-old twins. She also had a high-profile relationship with actor Ben Affleck.

Rodriguez retired from Major League Baseball in 2016, after a lengthy career, mostly with the New York Yankees. He won one World Series title with the Yankees and was an All-Star 14 times.

His achievements were tarnished by his admission that he used performance-enhancing drugs. He was suspended for the entire 2014 season.

Rodriguez currently works as an on-air baseball analyst.

He has been married once. He and ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis have two daughters.
