Johor – Poom Pattaropong of Thailand moved into the lead after carding a five-under-par 67 in the third round of the PGM ADT Johor Championship on Friday.

The 23-year-old Poom had an eventful day, as he shot an eagle, five birdies and two bogeys for an 18-under-par 198 total at the Palm Resort Golf and Country Club.

He has a four-shot lead going into the final round of the tournament, co-sanctioned by the Asian Development Tour (ADT) and the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM).

In second place is compatriot Pannakorn Uthaipas, who went slightly off the boil as he carded a 72.

Lloyd Jefferson Go of the Philippines (71), and Japan’s Genki Okada (68) as well as Kazuki Higa (68)are in third, fourth and fifth place respectively.

Poom’s eagle on the 16th gave him a mental boost for the final round.

“I hit a pretty good drive and used a nine-iron to get it onto the fringe, 10-feet from the hole. I managed to make an eagle from there. It was a huge confidence booster and it has set me up very nicely for tomorrow,” said Poom, who earned an Asian Tour card via Qualifying School earlier this year.

He added: “I’ll be playing with my good friend, Pannakorn (Uthaipas), and it’ll be great fun. Whatever happens, happens. I’m very satisfied with the state of my game at the moment.”

The leading seven players on the final ADT Order of Merit will earn playing rights on the premier Asian Tour for the 2020 season.

All ADT events offer Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points. The winner will receive a minimum of six OWGR points while the top six players and ties will also earn points based on a sliding scale.

Rennes stun 10-man Arsenal as Chelsea, Napoli close on Europa League quarters

Chelsea and Napoli closed in on the Europa League quarter-finals, but Arsenal face a major battle to reach the last eight after a 3-1 defeat away to Rennes on Thursday.

Alex Iwobi gave the Gunners a perfect start in north-western France at a raucous Roazhon Park, but the match hinged on the sending-off of Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos four minutes before half-time.

Benjamin Bourigeaud equalised moments later, and the hosts’ second-half pressure paid off as a Nacho Monreal own goal put Rennes ahead before Ismaila Sarr’s late header gave them a two-goal cushion in the tie.

Unai Emery’s side must now turn the tie around in the second leg in London next Thursday if they are to progress any further in a competition which represents their only hope of silverware this season, and offers a potential route into next season’s Champions League with Arsenal sitting outside the top four in the Premier League.

“I think we can do better, 3-1 is hard for us,” said Emery.

“We are going to think for next week. We will start with 11 against 11, without Sokratis, without (Alexandre) Lacazette, but if we play like we did in the first 40 minutes, with our supporters also, we will have the possibility to come back.”

The Gunners recovered from a first-leg deficit to beat BATE Borisov in the last round, but Rennes are a step up in quality and are revelling in what is already their best ever European run.

– Sokratis sent off –

After Iwobi’s early opener, the game turned just before half-time when Hatem Ben Arfa played in Sarr, who was hauled back by Sokratis just outside the area. The Greek defender had already been booked, so a second caution equalled a red card.

Bourigeaud struck the wall from the resulting free-kick, but the ball came back to him and he sent a stunning half-volley into the far corner.

Petr Cech, back facing one of his former clubs, made several interventions before being beaten again in the 65th minute, as Mehdi Zeffane’s cross from the right deflected in off Monreal, and Sarr added the potentially crucial third goal two minutes from time.

– Chelsea cruise –

Chelsea may also need this competition to get back in the Champions League next season and the Blues eased past Dynamo Kiev 3-0 at Stamford Bridge courtesy of goals from Pedro Rodriguez, Willian and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Pedro could have had at least a hat-trick as Denys Boyko denied him four times after the Spaniard had turned home Olivier Giroud’s flick to give Chelsea an early lead.

Willian was more accurate with a brilliant free-kick 25 minutes from time to double Chelsea’s lead and substitute Hudson-Odoi surely put the tie beyond Kiev with a smart finish a minute from time.

“The third goal for us is really very important,” said Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri.

“3-0 is an important result, but of course we have to play the second leg so we have to be careful.”

Sarri’s former side Napoli are also well on course for the quarters as early goals from Arkadiusz Milik and Fabian Ruiz, plus a second-half own goal from Jerome Onguene, earned a 3-0 win over last season’s semi-finalists Salzburg.

Valencia beat Krasnodar thanks to Rodrigo’s double at the Mestalla, but Viktor Claesson’s second-half strike will give the Russians hope of reaching the last eight on home soil in the second leg.

Inter Milan could regret a missed penalty by Marcelo Brozovic as the Italian giants drew 0-0 away to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Sevilla won the Europa League three years in a row between 2014 and 2016 with Emery as coach, but the most successful side in Europa League history have work to do after twice blowing a lead to draw 2-2 at home to Slavia Prague.

Villarreal have now won as many games in the Europa League as La Liga this season. Despite languishing in the relegation zone of the Spanish top flight, a 3-1 win away to Zenit Saint Petersburg put them within touching distance of the quarter-finals, while Dinamo Zagreb beat Benfica 1-0.

Man Utd fan stabbed by Paris taxi driver after PSG victory – report

sports March 08, 2019 06:26

By AFP

A Manchester United fan underwent surgery after being stabbed by a taxi driver following the English club’s stunning Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain, Sky Sports reported Thursday.

A French police source confirmed to AFP that a man had been wounded on Wednesday after an argument with a cab driver but that his condition was not believed to be life-threatening.

Sky Sports said the fan, who is 44, was travelling to the centre of the French capital with three friends when the driver objected to their boisterous celebration of United’s 3-1 win.

“The driver pulled over to get them out of his taxi, before pulling out a knife and threatening the female passenger in the group,” claimed Sky.

“The victim tried to intervene to protect her, but the driver then turned the knife on him, stabbing him in the chest with what’s been described as ‘a large blade’.”

The supporter was taken to the European Georges-Pompidou hospital in Paris where he underwent surgery to remove blood from his lung.

According to the report, a suspect has been arrested by police, but the weapon used has not been found.

A spokesman for Britain’s foreign ministry said: “We are in touch with the French authorities following an incident involving a British man in Paris on March 6 and stand ready to offer assistance if required.”

Close competition expected as the curtain comes up in Qatar and Losail is confirmed on the calendar until 2031

The wait is over and the first pre-event Press Conference of the 2019 season got underway on Thursday at the VisitQatar Grand Prix, with close competition the name of the game.

Joining reigning World Champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) to face the media was 2018 runner-up Andrea Dovizioso (Mission Winnow Ducati), Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP), Jorge Lorenzo (Repsol Honda Team), Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP), Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar), joined for the first time in the premier class by rookie Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT).

First to talk was reigning Champion Marquez, who heads into the weekend after shoulder surgery over the winter break. But is that weighing on his mind? He said not: “It’s nice to start the season again and I’m happy because I already forgot my injury, the shoulder problems. I’m just focused on the race weekend, that is the most important and in my current condition I’m close to 100% so this is positive news for us.”

Maybe for him, although it could give a fair few rivals food for thought. But of those, who is Marquez looking at as his closest competition? In a field as tight as this, the answer is a simple one: “Since 2017 I’ve been looking at everybody. I’m looking at all my opponents in the same way because for example in 2017 we were here and not a lot of people spoke about Dovizioso, then he was the man to beat. This preseason it was interesting to see how Yamaha improved, Ducati improved, Suzuki improved with Rins… let’s see how the season starts but of course we’ll be very fast here because we tested.”

And long runs? It’s something Marquez has been unable to put in in preseason, but he’s far from concerned: “Of course it has been a strange preseason for Repsol Honda and I. I missed some long runs but anyway I’m happy; happy with the base that we have, happy with how I felt on the bike. It’s more about mentality.”

One of his biggest competitors, Dovizioso, was up next and echoed a few of those thoughts: “Testing is difficult to analyse the level of the competitors because every rider works in a different way. So it’s difficult and like Marc says, everybody will be quite fast here because of the three day test. But I don’t know, it looks like this season could be a bit different on paper and from the test it looks like everybody improved a little bit; I don’t know whether it’s the bike or the riders. I don’t know what we can expect in this race, in the past it’s always been a good race, I think we can be very competitive but analysing the test doesn’t show this. But the race week is always different, so I’m not too worried about that.”

Jorge Lorenzo also thinks it’s a more positive story in race trim. Breaking a scaphoid so close to the season opener hasn’t been ideal – and after some injury problems to conclude the 2018 season, too – but he sounded upbeat. “We’ve been a bit unlucky in the last six months, in the last six months I’ve never felt 100%, but I think I still need one month more to be able to do pushups, all the things you can do when you are healed. But I’m quite well to ride a bike, better than the test. I will be a bit stronger, also Honda will bring a few modifications to make my life a little bit easier to be a little stronger than I was.” And how does he see the Honda in terms of adaptation? “It’s a completely different bike, with strong points and weak points. I like the bike, but it’s a never ending process to be perfect on the bike and I’ll never stop trying to improve the small details. Here let’s try to finish the race as well as possible and take some points.”

Valentino Rossi, meanwhile, returned to the subject of close competition and the ‘Doctor’, who starts the season at 40 after the recent milestone, started on that. “40-years-old, an important moment in my life! For the rest I feel good, it’s like the first day at school. It’s always interesting to see all the guys from the paddock, looking at the new bikes, the new colours – everything. And yeah it looks like the lineup of the Championship is unbelievable. Especially because all the factory bikes are very strong, and during the test more or less everybody was fast. We need to understand because usually during the race the bike is a bit different, but I expect all the factory riders at the top. I hope to be there, I hope to be strong. Yamaha have been working hard during the winter and we hope to be stronger than last year.”

Expanding on that, the number 46 said it could be a big fight for the podium although he wouldn’t predict much ahead of the weekend: “It’s difficult to say because like you said, in the last years here I did good results. Apart from one victory I was on the podium a lot of times, so we have to try. But if I have to think now, maybe we have seven or eight riders ready for the podium. I don’t know if we are stronger here than last year because anyway it was a good race. But we’ll see, we have to try. Also try to understand the conditions, with the grip, with the wind, we’ll see…”

Teammate Maverick Viñales also sounded guardedly positive about the Iwata marque and the level of the field: “For sure our competitors are strong right now but we are closing the gap little by little. And that’s important, to make the good choice when you try things and I think we are doing the correct things, testing the good parts. But anyway as we demonstrated we were fast on many different tracks and that’s important. I can’t wait to start and I’m happy to start at the level I am.”

And in terms of his start to the season? More positivity again: “I tried to face this season with a lot of calm, with a positive mind – it’s important for me to feel good. I think we must trust our feelings, preseason I went my way, riding the way I like to ride. We did good lap times but still we need to improve, Yamaha work so hard but still to be there every race we need to make another step. But anyway like I said, I feel positive with the bike and that’s the most important thing. Inside the team they work really well and I’m really happy with how it is going and I cant wait to start. Honestly I’ve been thinking of this moment to start for many days. I start with a positive mind and I hope to be there at the top as always.”

He already topped testing at Qatar so it looks good, but pretty close by for much of the time was Alex Rins. So there’s a lot of talk around the Suzuki rider, and he could well be a key player on race day. But there’s no mention of pressure: “Sincerely I think we finished the 2018 season with very good performance, always finishing in the top five or six, also some podiums. And this preseason I was trying to be strong. I was trying to improve our Suzuki bike a little bit because the setup from last year was very nice. But we improve a little bit on the braking area, a little bit on the top speed area so this means Suzuki have worked very hard during the winter. So, I’m excited to start this preseason, I’m excited to see what I can do and I will try to give my 100%.”

Another man excited to get racing but for slightly different reasons is Fabio Quartararo who, like Rins and Viñales, had a top showing in preseason – but even more so for the young French rookie, who finished the Qatar Test with a stunning second place ahead of his premier class debut. And it was also his premier class debut in the Press Conference: “Well for sure it’s quite impressive to be here with all the riders. Yeah we will try to stay focused on the first race on a GP bike. We had a really good test here, I’m feeling really good with the bike but as you know everybody is fast. The goal is to enjoy it and not think about the result…”

There was another key point of discussion around Quartararo too: his age. Rossi, sat next to the rookie, had it pointed out that he was old enough to be the Frenchman’s father – and it was a topic they’d already covered.

“We speak now exactly about this, I said he could be my son! He’s very, very young. 1999 so he´s two years younger than my brother yet he’s already in MotoGP! He has had a strange career. He arrived as a genius but for some reason he lost a little, but this year with this team and this bike he has a very important chance to demonstrate his speed.” And another comparison? “He arrives a year earlier than me to MotoGP because when I arrived I was 21…so he’s younger than I was!”

So with the talking done and photos taken, Thursday also saw a big announcement after the riders’ Press Conference: Losail International Circuit will host MotoGP™ until 2031. That adds an additional five-year extension onto the existing contract that had confirmed the Qatari venue on the calendar until 2026. The Grand Prix of Qatar debuted on the calendar in 2004 and then became the sport’s first ever night race in 2008. More than a decade later the spectacular in the desert only continues going from strength to strength in unique, floodlit style – as it will until at least 2031.

Rising star Sadom Kaewkanjana continued his impressive form to shoot an opening 67 and take a share in a  six-way lead after the first round of the Bt5 million Singha Masters in Chiang Rai on Thursday.

Poom Saksansin

Three weeks after winning his first title as a pro at an ADT event in Lopburi, Sadom was in flawless form and reeled off five birdies in his five-under-par round at Santiburi Country Club.

The 20-year-old from Narathiwat shares the lead with 2014 champion Poom Saksansin, fellow former international (Thai-Japanese) player Kosuke Hamamoto, one-time Asian Tour winner Danthai Boonma, Piya Swangarunporn and American Sam Chien.

“I tried not to make bogeys. The course sets up pretty tough this week with firm greens and long roughs,” said the tour rookie from Narathiwat.

“My game plan for Friday is to hit the fairways, then go for the greens and try to shoot scores,” added the softly spoken Sadom, who arrived at the northern town with confidence sky-high after his win at the ADT Thongchai Jaidee Foundation last month.

“I feel more confident after winning that title,” Sadom admitted. “I only expected to start with [a round of] one or two under but I hit five. I will stick with the same game plan and be very careful over the next three days.”

Three-time Asian Tour winner Poom, the world No 155, also had an unblemished scorecard highlighted by an eagle on the 13th hole and three birdies.

“I didn’t hit my driver well but luckily my putting really helped me out there. The greens are quite firm. I need to hit the fairways more tomorrow in order to set up the ball in good positions,” said Poom one of the three top 200 players to join the field this week. The others are No 127 John Catlin of the US, who opened with a 70, and No 163 Suengsu Han of the US, who started with a 76.

Defending champion Phachara Kongwtamai, 19, was up and down all day before signing off with a 71, four shy of the lead.

Johor – Amir Nazrin of Malaysia kept the local hope alive as he shot a five-under-par 67 to finish the second round in tied-second at the weather-disrupted PGM ADT Johor Championship.

The 21-year-old Amir got himself into contention after carding a near-flawless round that is highlighted by six birdies. He dropped only one shot on the par-four 10th before signing for a nine-under-par 135 total at the Palm Resort Golf and Country Club.

Amir is three shots behind the clubhouse leader, Lloyd Jefferson Go of the Philippines, at the RM 225,000 (approximately US$54,000) tournament, co-sanctioned by the Asian Development Tour (ADT) and the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM).

Go, in line for a breakthrough win on the ADT, carded his second consecutive 66. The 24-year-old traded an eagle and five birdies against a lone bogey to end his Thursday on 132.

“I was playing and hitting the ball well going into the tournament. In particular, I’ve been hitting my iron shots very well, so even if the ball is on the rough, I can hit it close to the hole,” he explained.

He added: “Good drives and second shots are key to a good scoring here and in particular, I played my second shots well today. Hitting the fairways is important here, and that will be my strategy going into the next two rounds.”

Ryan Troyer of the United States scored an ace. He achieved the feat on hole two from a distance of 176 yards using his eight iron.

Round two will restart at 7.40am on Friday, with the third round commencing not before 9.50am.

Urawa oust Buriram 3-0 in AFC game

sports March 07, 2019 08:40

By AFC

Saitama – A second half brace from Daiki Hashioka helped Urawa Red Diamonds to a hard-fought 3-0 win over Buriram United in their opening 2019 AFC Champions League Group G encounter at Saitama Stadium 2002 on Wednesday.

In their first appearance in the Continental showpiece since they lifted the title in 2017, the home side started brightly and had a golden chance to open the scoring after just 10 minutes when Yosuke Kashiwagi’s cross found Andrew Nabbout unmarked in the box, but the Australian attacker couldn’t keep his effort down.

Buriram’s best chances in the first half came on the break and they had a glorious opportunity on 24 minutes when Supachok Sarachat broke forward on the left in a 2-on-1 situation, but Tomoaki Makino expertly blocked off his passing lane for Pedro Junior in the middle before coming across with a perfectly timed tackle to defuse the situation.

Full-back Tomoya Ugajin was lively in attack for the home side, and had a goal-bound shot cleared in the box by Pansa Hemviboon just after the half hour mark, while he couldn’t direct a second effort on target eight minutes later.

The visitors came agonisingly close to open the scoring in the first few minutes of the second half, with Shusaku Nishikawa misjudging the flight on Korrakot Wiriyaudomsiri’s free-kick, which floated over his head before crashing into the crossbar.

Just two minutes later, however, and Oswaldo de Oliveira’s men took the lead when Makino got on the end of Kashiwagi’s corner to find the back of the net with a powerful header.

Far from being overawed at the prospect of coming from behind, Buriram put their foot on the gas and were unlucky not to draw level when the crossbar came to Urawa’s rescue again, this time from Andrés Túñez’s header from close range.

Having been their saviour twice, the crossbar denied Urawa a second on 66 minutes when Shinzo Koroki’s header was tipped onto the bar by Siwarak Tedsungnoen, before Koroki then flashed the rebound wide.

Hashioka scored his first of the night on 75 minutes when he smashed home the rebound from a Siwarak save, while his second came just minutes before full time when he was found unmarked at the back post by a beautiful cross from substitute Koya Yuruki, securing the win and all three points for Urawa.

The Japanese side now travel to the Chinese capital to face Beijing FC, while Buriram United return home to Thailand to face K League 1 champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.

PSG coach Tuchel refuses to blame VAR after ‘cruel’ Champions League exit

sports March 07, 2019 07:31

By AFP

Stunned Paris Saint-Germain coach Thomas Tuchel said his side’s Champions League exit at the hands of Manchester United on Wednesday was “cruel” but refused to blame the match officials after the late VAR-awarded penalty that decided the tie.

“I am a big supporter of VAR and I stay a big supporter of VAR,” said Tuchel, who looked white as he spoke to media after PSG’s 3-1 defeat at the Parc des Princes in their last 16, second leg.

Having won 2-0 in the first leg last month, the French side wobbled in the return but were still going through until Slovenian referee Damir Skomina gave a stoppage-time penalty for a Presnel Kimpembe handball in the box, after reviewing the images.

A Diogo Dalot shot had struck Kimpembe, and Marcus Rashford duly converted from the spot, as United went through on away goals.

“From my point of view I watched Dalot take the shot. I saw the ball flying straight from his foot and for me it was clear that it was going way over the bar,” said Tuchel.

“There are many things to discuss before taking the decision and I think it’s a 50-50 decision.

“What makes it super hard is that I had the clear feeling that the shot was not on target, and to get rewarded with a penalty, there is no logic.”

A Romelu Lukaku brace in the first half had given the visitors hope of an improbable win, but Juan Bernat scored in between to keep PSG on course.

Tuchel added: “You can say that we played on this thin line for 60 minutes knowing that if we don’t score, we can blame it.”

The German said the manner of the defeat, after they had dominated much of the game, was “perhaps impossible to analyse”.

PSG are the runaway Ligue 1 leaders, but this is the third year running in which they have gone out of the Champions League in the last 16.

“If it were a league game you would wipe your mouth and go on, but today it’s horrible and cruel,” he said.

“It happens once in 100 games. We did not deserve to go out over 180 minutes, but that makes it not easier to deal with.”

Solskjaer hails United’s ‘fantastic’ history makers

sports March 07, 2019 07:26

By AFP

Ole Gunner Solskjaer saluted Manchester United’s never-say-die star as they reached the Champions League quarter-finals with an historic 3-1 win over Paris Saint Germain on Wednesday.

United became the first team in European Cup history to recover from losing the first leg of a knockout round tie 2-0 at home.

Romelu Lukaku scored twice either side of Juan Bernat’s equaliser before Marcus Rashford converted a controversial stoppage time VAR-awarded penalty to send United through on away goals.

It was an incredible result given United were without the suspended Paul Pogba as well as nine injured stars including Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Ander Herrera.

But United interim manager Solskjaer insisted he never doubted his players could do the unthinkable in the last 16 second leg in Paris.

“The belief in the boys was just what we hoped for. It was fantastic,” Solskjaer told BT Sport.

“You always know it is possible. With this club this is what we do. It’s Man Utd. It’s the Champions League. That’s what it does.”

Faced with a daunting first leg deficit, Solskjaer admitted United desperately needed Lukaku’s second minute goal to put the momentum back in their favour.

Once United had opened the scoring, Solskjaer felt the French champions were haunted by the ghosts of their previous failures from winning positions in the Champions League, including blowing a 4-0 lead against Barcelona two years ago.

“It was a great start. We started with a plan to get the first goal, but we didn’t expect it to come so soon,” he said.

“We wanted an open game with many goals and that’s what happened.

“There is always some mental doubt because they (PSG) have had those experiences.

“Our boys are young and fresh which gave us more energy when we needed that goal.”

United had a huge slice of luck for the winner as VAR ruled that PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe, turning his back as he jumped, had handled a Diogo Dalot shot as it struck him on the arm in the penalty area.

Kimpembe barely extended his arm at all, but Rashford made the most of the opportunity as he calmly netted from the spot.

Solskjaer claimed it was the right decision, although he was nervous when Rashford stepped up to take his first ever penalty for United.

“The referee had a big, big call to make. My staff said the player made himself big, so it’s a clear penalty,” Solskjaer added.

“I was in the Champions League with Molde and we got a penalty in the last minute and my player missed that and we went out.

“I had to try and calm everyone down. Of course there were doubts. But Rashford, he’s 21 and the pressure on the boy, there were no nerves whatsoever, fearless.”

Solskjaer has had an astonishing impact since arriving from Molde to replace the sacked Jose Mourinho in December.

He is yet to lose a domestic match and has won every away game in all competitions.

After masterminding one of the great European comebacks it is impossible to think he won’t get the job on a permanent basis.

When asked about the prospect of taking charge full-time, the Norwegian said: “Until the summer, let’s see what happens.”

England striker Rashford insisted he never felt even a second of concern as he endured the long wait to take the penalty while VAR looked at the incident.

“I think it was just about keeping a cool head. That’s what you practice for. I wanted to take it,” he said.

“Those moments are the moments we live for, and we want to come out of them smiling after.

“It’s a beautiful thing, to have 10 players injured too, but it’s an opportunity and it’s what we deserve.”
