Honda’s six-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez ended his three-year pole drought on Saturday (September 24) in a rain-hit Japanese Grand Prix qualifying in Motegi, with Yamaha’s MotoGP world championship leader Fabio Quartararo managing only ninth on the grid.

Marquez posted a time of 1:55.214 to snatch pole on the same circuit where he claimed his last pole in 2019, as he looks to return to MotoGP’s summit following a couple of years marred by injury.

The Spaniard has had persistent problems since he broke his arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix and has had multiple operations since then.

He missed six rounds of the championship following the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello in May, but made his return at last week’s Aragon Grand Prix after recovering from surgery on his right arm.

“I feel really happy. It’s true that it’s a pole position, it’s only a pole position, it’s in wet conditions but at the moment when we come, we are coming from a difficult moment. At the moment we have now with the bike with all the team, with me, it’s really important to have these small motivations, small achievement.” Said MARC MARQUEZ

Pramac Ducati’s Johann Zarco finished second with Red Bull KTM’s Brad Binder completing the front row.

Aprilia Racing’s Maverick Vinales and Aleix Espargaro finished fourth and sixth respectively, while Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia, who is 10 points behind Quartararo in the overall standings, endured a frustrating afternoon coming last in Q2.

Gresini Racing’s Enea Bastianini, who won at Aragon, will start Sunday’s (September 25) race in 15th place after crashing out in Q1.

Aron Canet of Spain took pole in the Moto2 class while Japan’s Tatsuki Suzuki was fastest in Moto3.

One million baht will be up for grabs at the fifth and final event of this year’s Thai Senior Tour, held at Artitaya Golf & Resort in Nakhon Nayok from September 25-27.

After two rounds of competition, the top 60 golfers will qualify for the final day and a shot at the one-million-baht purse.

Previous tournaments were held in Chiang Mai in March, Nakhon Ratchasima (April), Hua Hin (June), and Phuket (August).

Asian Tour legend Thaworn Wiratchant won the first three tournaments while Somboon Leelathitikul was victorious in Phuket last month.

TSPGA president Suthin Darunyothin said this month’s tournament might not be the season finale after all, as the association is waiting for confirmation of another event in November.

Meanwhile, the next season will start in February. Suthin said he hoped to see more foreign golfers on tour next year as the Covid-19 situation improves. He added that the association will also boost amateurs’ efforts to turn pro.

Federer’s emotional grand finale ends in defeat

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2022

Reuters

It was surely unthinkable that Roger Federer’s trophy-laden career would end with a defeat but that is what transpired as the 41-year-old Swiss maestro lost alongside Rafael Nadal on an emotional night at the Laver Cup on Friday (September 23).

In front of a 17,500 sell-out crowd at London’s O2 Arena, 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer returned from more than a year away for a last dance in tandem with his great rival on a gripping and memorable finale by the Thames.

With the clock already well past midnight, Federer had the chance to seal victory in the doubles clash when he served at match point in a tense deciding tiebreak but it was not to be as Americans Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe ruined the script.

Sock thumped a forehand winner to seal a 4-6 7-6 11-9 win for Team World. After a brief moment of almost silence around the packed arena, the crowd erupted to salute an emotional Federer.

The London crowd had to wait for the arrival of Federer and Nadal as British favourite Andy Murray and Alex De Minaur engaged in a series of interminable rallies in a grinding opening match of the night, eventually won by De Minaur.

Murray’s two Wimbledon titles mean he is a national sporting icon but the night was all about Federer — a player who resides in the pantheon of sporting greats along with the likes of Pele, Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali.

Even Federer’s practice sessions at the O2 were standing room only affairs and an electric atmosphere greeted him as he walked out into the cavernous arena alongside Nadal just after 10pm local time for what would be his last dance.

“I’ve done this thousands of times, but this one feels different. Thank you to everybody who’s coming tonight,” Federer has posted on Twitter earlier in the day.

It certainly felt that way too for everyone present in a crowd which included Australian great Laver — the man who inspired Federer to create the novel team event.

After the coin toss formalities loud roars accompanied Federer and Nadal, otherwise knows as ‘Fedal’, as they warmed up to the sound of The Clash’s London Calling booming around the venue — Federer raising his arm in salute after his introduction.

An even bigger cheer went up when Federer punched away a volley in the opening game — his first competitive shot since a demoralising defeat by Hubert Hurkacz in the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 2021 when he lost the last set 6-0.

During the changeovers the video screens showed some iconic moments of Federer’s 24-year professional career with tributes from Nadal and his mother Lynette.

American duo Sock and Tiafoe, pantomime villains for the night, tested Federer’s reactions with some lusty blows aimed at the Swiss maestro who would have demanded nothing less.

Federer was equal to pretty much everything though, his silky shot-making and nimble footwork very much intact despite such a long time away from the match court.

The pair with a combined age of 77 and 42 Grand Slam titles between them edged the opening set by breaking Tiafoe’s serve.

Despite the party atmosphere in the stadium, there was no danger of Federer’s farewell match turning into an exhibition.

It was serious business and after they fell a break down early in the second, Federer and Nadal stormed back and looked poised for a straight sets win but were instead dragged into a tense deciding tiebreak with the clock past midnight.

Chants of ‘Let’s Go Roger Let’s Go’ resounded around the packed stands as Federer and Nadal clawed their way towards a victory the occasion demanded but they fell agonisingly short.

Fifteen-Year-Old Ethan Nwaneri Became The Youngest Player In Premier League History When He Came On As A Substitute For Arsenal As They Returned To The Top Of The Premier League With A Comfortable 3-0 Win At Brentford On Sunday (September 18).

Goals from William Saliba and Gabriel Jesus gave Mikel Arteta’s side a 2-0 lead at the break before Fabio Vieira completed the win in the 54th minute.

Nwaneri, who is 15 years and 181 days old, came on as a substitute for Vieira in the second minute of stoppage time, the first player under 16 to play in the competition.

The previous youngest player to feature in the league was Harvey Elliott, now of Liverpool, who was 16 years, 38 days old when he made his top flight debut for Fulham.

Arsenal had suffered their first defeat of the season in their last outing, at Manchester United, but never looked in danger, controlling the game from the outset.

Saliba got things under way, heading the visitors in front in the 17th minute, rising to angle a corner from Bukayo Saka in off the far post.

Another header, 11 minutes later, doubled Arsenal’s advantage with Grant Xhaka picking out Gabriel Jesus with a perfectly floated cross from the left which the Brazilian met powerfully.

The game was put beyond Brentford in the fourth minute after the break thanks to a wonderful strike from outside the box by Portuguese midfielder Fabio Vieira, which rattled in off the post.

Arsenal are on 18 points from the opening seven matches of the season with defending champions Manchester City a point behind and North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur also on 17 points.

Manchester United’s Men’s Team Will Not Be In Action Again Until The Start Of October, When We Make The Short Trip To The Etihad Stadium, The Home Of Our Neighbours And Rivals City.

The postponement of the Premier League games with Leeds United this Sunday and Crystal Palace last weekend, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, has meant virtually a month-long gap between our fixtures in the division.

The international break, the last one before the World Cup gets under way in November, ensures a high proportion of the United squad will not be at Carrington for much of the next fortnight.

The players that remain there will continue preparing for what will be an eagerly awaited return to domestic football for the Reds.

United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted it is difficult to ensure more development of his side due to the absences, but the work will continue, regardless, behind the scenes.

“I don’t have the players,” he said. “What can we plan?

“We can plan work structures with the players who will be there. They will get a break but also have good sessions. We can work on specifics but, when 90 per cent of the squad is not there, we cannot work on development. That is clear.”
Following the Manchester derby, United face a lengthy journey to Cyprus to meet Omonia Nicosia in the third of our Group E matches in the Europa League.

An unusual Sunday evening assignment follows, at Everton, before Old Trafford finally gets to welcome its favourites again on Thursday 13 October when Omonia will again provide the opposition.

By then, Ten Hag’s men will hope to have reestablished a rhythm that will leave us in a healthy position for what lies ahead this term.
