Chanathip sets sights on Asian Cup last 16

THE NATION

NATIONAL midfielder Chanathip Songkrasin is determined to spearhead his side to the round of 16 when he makes his Asian Cup debut in the United Arab Emirates next week.

The 25-year-old Consadole Sapporo player has resumed national-team duties for the third time this year after the King’s Cup in March and a friendly with Trinidad and Tobago in October. Dubbed “Messi Jay” by local media, Chanathip has enjoyed the best year of his career after helping Japan’s Sapporo to an all-time best fourth-place finish in the J-League, then being named among the J-League Best 11 and also winning the Thai FA’s Player of the Year award.

“The Asian Cup is the biggest event in Asia. We all want to achieve the best result,” said the highly talented but diminutive player at just 158cm tall. “It will be the first Asian Cup for several players including me. I want to help the team reach the round of 16 or further,” said Chanathip who scored eight goals for his Japanese club this season. “Every time I’m part of the national team, I’m willing to work hard just like other teammates. I may need to take longer than others to adjust to the team and to learn the tactics from the coach [Milovan Rajevac], as I have barely spent time with them,” added the winger, who has scored five international goals since joining the senior team in 2013.

“Once we have the national flag on our chests, we will give it more than 100 per cent to reach the target. Apart from playing for ourselves, we play for the country and the fans every second we are on the field,” he added.

Thailand have reached the Asian Cup Finals for the first time in 12 years. The country’s best performance in the quadrennial event is a third-place finish as hosts in 1972.

Placed in Group A along with UAE, India and Bahrain, the national team is expected to reach the round of 16. The top two nations from each of the six groups plus the four best third-placed teams will qualify for the second round of 16 teams.

Thailand kick off their campaign against India on January 6, then meet Bahrain on January 10 and end the group stage against the hosts on January 14.

Arsenal’s Mkhitaryan out for six weeks

sports December 25, 2018 07:55

Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be out of action for at least six weeks because of a foot injury, the Premier League side revealed on their website on Tuesday.

Mkhitaryan fractured the metatarsal in his right foot in last Wednesday’s Carabao Cup defeat by Tottenham and was replaced at half-time. He missed the win against Burnley at the weekend.

Arsenal said the Armenian playmaker is “expected to return to full training in six weeks”.

Mkhitaryan has been a regular under Unai Emery and has scored four Premier League goals this season.

The 29-year-old will miss key league games against Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City as Arsenal continue their pursuit of a top-four place.

Mkhitaryan arrived at the Emirates Stadium almost a year ago as part of the swap deal that took Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United.

Relish rather than fear Old Trafford, Solskjaer tells Man Utd

Manchester United return to Old Trafford for the first time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s management against Huddersfield on Boxing Day with a new-found swagger after scoring five goals in the Premier League for the first time in five years.

The Norwegian’s caretaker spell in charge until the end of the season got off to a dream start as United threw off the shackles, that led to turgid football and deteriorating results under Jose Mourinho, to thrash Cardiff 5-1.

United still face a huge challenge to make up an eight-point gap just to qualify for next season’s Champions League via a top-four finish.

But for now the luxury of just being able to enjoy watching a side play with freedom and the attacking principles that have underpinned the club’s history is enough to excite United fans again.

“I think the boys are looking forward to playing at Old Trafford and that’s important. We should be looking forward to that, they are the best fans in the world,” said Solskjaer when questioned whether some of the current United squad have been inhibited by the pressures of playing at home in the famous red shirt.

Solskjaer is certainly a favourite of the United faithful having scored 126 goals in 11 seasons as a player, including the one that famously won the Champions League final in 1999.

He was serenaded throughout by the visiting fans in the Welsh capital at the weekend as United hit five for the first time since Alex Ferguson’s final game in charge.

“I just hope in the next five months I do a good enough job for them to keep singing my name when someone else comes in,” added Solskjaer, whose positivity has immediately lifted a squad downtrodden by Mourinho’s mood swings.

“Just to be positive. Take risks,” said Jesse Lingard, who scored twice in Cardiff, at what Solskjaer’s message has been.

“If you lose the ball, win it back, and play the United way – attacking football, entertaining football. For us as players, we enjoyed it today.”

Rarely has enjoyment ever been top of Mourinho’s list of priorities, even in his most successful spells with Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan.

– ‘Work harder’ –

However, the levels of committment he demanded from those sides was not evident in the current United squad.

For the first time this season, United outran their opponents against Cardiff.

“A Man United team should never ever be outworked,” said Solskjaer to highlight the minimum he expects.

“Doesn’t matter which team you play. You should run more than them and then your skills will give you the chance to win the game.”

A good work ethic should be the minimum required of a Manchester United team, but Mourinho’s tactics also didn’t help his side’s running statistics.

Too often the Red Devils were set up to sit deep and try and counter-attack.

Solskjaer instead seems intent on implementing the United way he learned at the heel of Ferguson for so long.

“I said the same to these lads as I do back in Molde: work harder than them, enjoy yourselves, pass it forward, run forward, if you lose it, I don’t mind as long as you work to win it back and they did.

“When you’ve got players like this with the quality you are always going to create chances.”

The best Christmas present for many United fans may be the gift of being able to look forward to games with a sense of anticipation again.

Chilean analyst reveals plan to take Thailand team to next level

THE NATION

THE NEWLY recruited national football team’s game analyst, Julio Cesar Moreno Yanez of Chile, has praised Thai players for their positive attitude, saying the War Elephants can achieve their goal in the upcoming Asian Cup.

An old colleague of national coach Milovan Rajevac, Yanez was called up last week to work on team analysis, which has been identified as a top priority if Thailand are to reach the round of 16 in the Cup, which kicks off on January 5 in the United Arab Emirates.

The 49-year-old assistant coach used to work with Rejevac at the Qatar League’s Al-Sadd Club and grabbed the chance to rejoin the Serbian after his contract with the Middle East team expired.

“It’s an honour to be part of Thailand’s national team, which has some of the most passionate fans,” said Yanez. “As I used to work for the under-20 and Olympic teams of Qatar, I know the Thai team quite well. They play a fast game and have good skills.”

Yanez, who also helped Serbia in the Russian World Cup Finals, pointed out that game analysis has become crucial in modern football and that he can introduce a |different perspective to help the head coach.

“Apart from providing analytical information on opposite teams, a game analyst can share new opinions with the coach. As I have long experience in this area and as I also used to be a team manager, I can serve as ‘two assistants’ at the same time,” Yanez said.

The Chilean will be tasked with scrutinising the team’s strengths and weaknesses and devising methods to help the team achieve higher levels.

“When we know ourselves more, we understand our opponents even better. Then I can analyse their game and propose the most accurate data to the head coach to lay out a game plan and tactics. This will make his job easier,” Yanez added.

The analyst is impressed by the positive attitude of Thai players and is confident the team will become a force to be reckon with in the future.

“The players are hardworking and are craving victories. Together with support from home fans, they can become stronger and reach their goals,” said Yanez, who has had stints as assistant coach for China, Honduras, Jamaica, Iraq and as manager for Qatar’s under-23 side.

“Due to my experience with the Chinese, Serbian and Honduran teams in the World Cup Finals, I believe I can help take the Thai team to another level,” he said.

Three tournaments in Guangzhou and the first Series event outside Greater China make up qualifying season

Beijing – Foison Golf Club’s Dye Course in Guangzhou will host three 2019 PGA TOUR Series-China Qualifying Tournaments, and then the Series will make history when it holds for the first time its final Global Qualifying event outside of Greater China.

The Series’ third Global Qualifying Tournament is set for Laguna Phuket Golf Club in Phuket, Thailand. Aside from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau have also hosted official events, with Thailand to join the list.

The First Global Qualifying Tournament will be February 19-22, 2019, with the Second Global Qualifying Tournament the following week (February 26-March 1). The Third Global Qualifying Tournament is March 5-8 in Phuket, with all three tournaments open to players from outside Mainland China. The Tour will begin accepting applications for the three Global Qualifying Tournaments on December 26, 2018 at 8:00 a.m. EST. However, the Tour will begin accepting early applications for former PGA TOUR Series-China, Web.com Tour, PGA TOUR Latinoamerica and Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada members on December 22, 2018 at 8 a.m., EST.

Foison Golf Club will also host the Mainland China Qualifying Tournament for China passport holders. That qualifier, also with a field size of 120 players, is set for January 22-25. The Tour will begin accepting applications for the Mainland Chinese Q-School on December 22, at 8 a.m., Beijing time.

“We have watched numerous players show up at the Qualifying Tournaments, and a year or two later they are playing on the Web.com Tour and the PGA TOUR. It’s at the qualifiers where many of them are beginning their professional journeys, and we recognize the talent that has come through our Tour during its first four years,” said PGA TOUR Series-China Executive Director Greg Carlson. “As we announce these dates, it means another PGA TOUR Series-China season is just around the corner, featuring a mix of new players who will emerge from these qualifiers as well as those players who are returning.

“This is also a new chapter in the history of the Tour as we stage an event away from Greater China for the first time. Playing in Thailand will provide players with a new cultural experience while playing a tournament on a world-class golf course in one of the great resort cities in Southeast Asia,” Carlson continued.

Each of the Qualifying Tournaments will feature fields of 120 players, with the winner of each 72-hole, stroke-play tournament earning a full exemption for the entire 2019 season. Those finishing between second and 12th will have full status through the Tour’s first six events. Players finishing in the Nos. 13-35 positions, and ties, will have conditional status through the season’s first six events. After the sixth tournament, there will be a reshuffle based on 2019 Order of Merit rank. The season-ending event will have eligibility based on performance during the season, not on Q-School results. The Global Qualifying Tournaments carry an entry fee of U.S. $1,500, while the Mainland China Qualifying Tournament, due to a discount offered by Foison Golf Club, will cost RMB 7,500.

Foison Golf Club’s original 18 holes previously hosted the final event of the 2016 PGA TOUR Series-China season—the Buick Open, won by China’s Huilin Zhang. In 2019, the Dye Course will be the site of the qualifier, a course designed by Cynthia Dye.

Architect Paul Jansen revamped and upgraded Laguna Phuket Golf Club in 2014, a course built among lagoons, native water grasses and mature woodland areas. The last International Federation of PGA Tours event held at Laguna Phuket Golf Club was the Asian Development Tour’s 2017 Singha Phuket Open.

In 2018, PGA TOUR Series-China Global Qualifying Tournament winners were Americans Jeffrey Kang and Joseph Winslow, with Cheng Jin capturing the Mainland China qualifier. Other Global Qualifying Tournament winners in the Series’ history are American Charlie Saxon and South Korea’s Sungpil Park (2016), Canada’s Justin Shin and American Kyle Souza (2015) and Australians David Lutterus and Alex Hawley (2014).

QUALIFYING SCHOOL CHRONICLES: KITAYAMA ON THE FAST TRACK TO SUCCESS

QUALIFYING SCHOOL CHRONICLES: KITAYAMA ON THE FAST TRACK TO SUCCESS

Young foreign golfers typically struggle when they venture to Asia in their first year. American Kurt Kitayama, on the other hand, proved that it is also possible to take the fast track to stardom.

Kitayama first entered the scene in January when he impressed at the Asian Tour Qualifying School with a tied-third finish to earn his Tour card on his very first attempt.

Spurred by his success from Qualifying School, the Japanese-American went on to secure one of three spots up for grabs when he topped the field by a single shot at the SMBC Singapore Open Qualifying Tournament the week after.

Riding high on confidence in his birth month, the 25-year-old Kitayama carried forward his form to the Asian Development Tour (ADT) where he put on a stunning display to claim a wire-to-wire victory in Malaysia.

That win was his very first since turning professional in 2015, and he quickly turned his focus back to the region’s premier Tour, hoping to ignite on the big stage.

“It has been a great year playing in Asia. It was tough at first because I wasn’t getting many starts, but I was fortunate enough to play well in the events that I did get into which helped me get into some bigger events later in the year,” said Kitayama, who enjoyed a commendable tied-fourth finish in his first start in New Zealand.

Residing in Las Vegas, Nevada, Kitayama who played two years on the Web.com Tour, admitted he experienced a slight culture shock when he took the leap to pursue more playing opportunities in Asia.

“When I first came to Asia, there was a little bit of a culture shock. Adjusting to that, and the different foods was a little bit of a struggle. I gained more experience along the way and now it has been easy to adapt to the new cultures,” said Kitayama.

Throughout his rookie year, the young American has displayed a steady rate of improvement where he did not miss a single cut in his first 11 starts, including three top-five finishes.

Soaking up the experience of playing amongst the best in Asia, he finally entered the winner’s circle in Mauritius before wrapping up an incredible season in South Africa.

It is a bonus that Kitayama, who’s only five feet, seven inches tall, topped the season statistics in the driving distance category with his booming average of 315 yards. There is no doubt that the big-hitting golfer is primed for the top echelons of the game with all his achievements this season.

“Having my maiden victory in my rookie year is great. I think it might be a little early to tell if it is a turning point but it was a huge step in my career and has opened up opportunities for the next two years.

“Asia has great players. Putting myself in contention throughout the year and competing with them played a big role in helping me make a breakthrough in Mauritius. I was able to learn from those experiences, get better, and win a tournament,” said Kitayama.

Underlining the success of Qualifying School graduates is fellow countryman John Catlin, who marked his name in the Asian Tour history books by becoming the 10th golfer in Tour history to win three times in a single season.

“Any time you can get into the winner’s circle it is going to be a good year. To do it multiple times is just amazing. If you told me at the start that I was going to win three times and end up in sixth place on the Habitat for Humanity Standings, I wouldn’t have believed it,” said Catlin, who first came through Qualifying School in 2015.

Stressing that the key to his success has been hard work, the 2018 Player’s Player of the Year recipient has inspired his peers with his dogged work ethic.

“For as long as I have been a professional golfer, I believe that the only confidence I’ve found when I step on to face these world-class golfers is knowing that I’ve hit these shots thousands of times. And that’s never going to change.

“I am very excited for next year. To be able to play in all the biggest events is going to be awesome. Winning a co-sanctioned event is my highest priority, and that’s my goal next year,” added Catlin.

Thiago Silva became the latest Paris Saint-Germain player to have his property robbed during a match, police confirmed on Sunday.

Robbers broke into the Brazilian’s home in the upmarket 16th arrondissement of Paris while he was playing in PSG’s Ligue 1 match against Nantes at the nearby Parc des Princes.

The thieves are believed to have got away with items worth hundreds of thousands of euros.

Last month, burglars broke into the apartment of striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting while he was in action for PSG against Liverpool in the Champions League.

On that occasion, a police source said, the thieves escaped with loot worth around 600,000 euros ($682,000), mostly in jewels and handbags from the FLAt near the Parc des Princes.

In December 2017, the Paris apartment of then PSG coach Unai Emery, now at Arsenal, was burgled as his team played Strasbourg in the French Cup.

Pochettino focused on Spurs success after hitting Everton for six

Tottenham Hotspur showed why manager Mauricio Pochettino is a wanted man by thrashing Everton 6-2 at Goodison Park on Sunday to close to within six points of Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Spurs have had to cope with the unwanted attention of Pochettino being linked with the Manchester United job following Jose Mourinho’s sacking this week.

But they showed no signs of being distracted as they roared back from a goal down thanks to doubles from Son Heung-min and Harry Kane with Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen also on target.

“There is a lot of rumours but our job is Tottenham and we have to be focused to try to be successful,” said Pochettino.

Fatigue may yet still derail Tottenham’s bid to win a first trophy under Pochettino with Spurs still involved in four competitions.

But with Liverpool facing Arsenal and Manchester City in a top-of-the-table clash in their next three games over the festive period, Tottenham have the opportunity to haul themselves into a three-way title race if they maintain the standards set at Goodison.

“Football is about being consistent. If we are consistent and able to play like we did today then maybe we are alive until the end of April and be a real contender,” added Pochettino.

“We are involved in four competitions but I think today we surprise everyone because not only the quality, but the energy we showed today was amazing.”

Everton struck first against the run of play in a wildly open contest when Theo Walcott stabbed home at the near post from Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s cross.

But Spurs looked as if they could score with almost every attack and were soon on level terms with the aid of a Jordan Pickford error.

The England number one rushed from his goal but only succeeded in getting in the way of his own defender Kurt Zouma and Son took advantage with a wonderful finish from a narrow angle.

“We dominated the game from the start, we created so many chances, so we were unlucky to be 1-0 down,” said Son.

“But we bounced back, showed our character and our mentality. We are happy to get three points here.”

– Tottenham blitz –

Once back on level terms, Spurs were relentless as Pickford denied Son a second but Alli charged into the box to sweep home the rebound to turn the game around.

Kane is now just one goal behind Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang in the race for the Premier League golden boot and showed his predatory instincts to side-foot into an empty net after Kieran Trippier’s fine free-kick came back off the post three minutes before half-time.

“I think everyone is talking about Liverpool and Man City, but we are just doing well as we normally do,” said the England captain.

“We’ve had a great week, we’ve got games coming up thick and fast but games we can win.”

Both teams face the least rest time of any Premier League side over the festive period with another three games to come between now and New Year’s Day.

However, there was no let up in the pace of the game after the break as Eriksen produced a technically-perfect volley from the edge of the box to make it 4-1 before Gylfi Sigurdsson pulled a goal back for Everton three minutes later.

Yet, any hope of a fightback was extinguished just after the hour mark when Son’s fine control cushioned Erik Lamela’s pass before he finished through the legs of Pickford.

It was announced this week that the South Korean will go to the Asian Cup in January despite already representing his country at the World Cup and Asian Games this year.

And Son showed why he will be missed by his club in January once more with an inch-perfect cross for Kane to slide in for his second of the afternoon 16 minutes from time.

THAI ACE CLINCHES GLORY FOR KINGDOM WITH FINAL PUTT

CHON BURI – KIRADECH APHIBARNRAT turned the home hero when he saved a par putt on the final hole to spearhead Thailand to a 15-13 win over Japan in a nail-biting final day of the Amata Friendship Cup at the Amata Spring Country Club.

With a 10-6 lead from the foursomes and fourballs, Thailand needed just 4.5 points from yesterday’s 12 singles matches, but the task turned out to be more difficult than it was supposed to.

Japan stayed true to their fighting nature, rallying from behind to breathe down Thai necks at 13-14. It all came down to world No 38 Kiradech and fellow PGA Tour player Satoshi Kodaira to decide the victors – and it was the Thai who made a four foot-par-putt to close the deal.

“It was the most exciting putt of my life,” said the 29-year-old winner of four European Tour titles. “I have played this course many times but I was so nervous before the last putt. I knew I had to make it not only for myself but for my team and Thailand,” said the Kingdom’s No 1.

Japan started the day in ominous style with Yuto Katsuragawa winning the battle against fellow amateur Sadom Kaewkanjana 1-up. Teenage prodigy Atthaya Thitikul, also an amateur, then scored the first point of the day for the home team, beating Yuri Yoshida 1 up to extend the overall Thai lead to 11-7.

“I wish I could have won more points for our team,” said Atthaya, who contributed 1.5 over the three days. “Sometimes you try your best but the other team does better,” added the 15-year-old Atthaya who aims to defend her title in the Women’s Amateur Asia Pacific Championship in Japan next year.

Thailand went up to 12-7 when Jazz Janewattananond produced his fourth point of the tournament with a 1-up win over Kodai Ichihara.

“I’m more motivated when I play for the country. We all agreed there’s no need to apologise if anyone make mistakes, because we all want to win,” said the two-time Asian Tour winner.

Japan struck back in the next three matches to reduce the deficit to 9-12. Former world No 44 Fumika Kawagishi outclassed Thai No 3 Pornanong Phatlum 5&3, followed by an upset win for one-time Japan Tour winner Masahiro Kawamura over eight-time European Tour victor Thongchai Jaidee 3&2 and Erika |Hara defeating Pannarat Thanapolboonyaras 1 up.

Thailand stopped the bleeding when Prom Meesawat halved with Ryuko Tokimatsu for a total score of 12.5-10.5.

Thidapa Suwannapura then stretched the Thai lead to 13.5-10.5 with a 2-up win over Sakura Koiwai before veteran Prayad Marksaeng halved with Hideto Tanihara for 14-11.

“I was nervous all the time as she put up a great fight. I made lots of birdies but I missed for bogeys too. It was a good tournament as I got to play with Thongchai Jaidee who taught me a few things,” said the third Thai to win on the LPGA Tour this year.

Thailand were half a point from victory and Moriya Jutanugarn could have brought it home but instead missed her three-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. Two-time Japan LPGA winner Mami Fukuda then saved par to win 1 up and close the gap to 12-14.

Japan then threatened to pull off a “miracle in Chon Buri” when Thailand’s world No 1 Ariya Jutanugarn was stunned by No 7 Nasa Hataoka, 3&1. But then up stepped Kiradech to save the day. “I knew Kiradech would bring home the victory as he is a tough player. It was such an amazing ending,” said Ariya.

Thai captain Boonchu Ruangkit admitted he didn’t expect the final day would go to the wire.

“I thought it would be over sooner. The Japanese women putted so well. It was a very exciting day,” said the Thai legend.

Japanese captain Naomichi “Joe” Ozaki said: “We put up a fight. I give credit to all my players for great teamwork.”

Former light-heavyweight world champion Adonis Stevenson has come out of a coma three weeks after a knockout loss to Oleksandr Gvozdyk, the fighter’s girlfriend said Saturday.

Simone “Sisi” God, issued a statement via social media saying the fighter was awake.

“Despite recent reports being leaked to media, I wanted to clarify that Adonis is awake,” God said. “He is healing from his injury in the private company of his family and his dedicated medical team.”

Boxing promoter Yvon Michel said on Thursday that Stevenson was still in a medically induced coma and on life support.

“He still needs mechanical assistance to breathe, and he has not regained consciousness,” Michel said. “When we visit him, we cannot stay with him for long, and the doctors do not venture an opinion on what lies ahead.”

God’s statement gave no indication of when Stevenson emerged from a coma. A spokesman for University Hospital of Quebec, contacted by AFP, said he was unable to confirm Stevenson’s condition.

Michel posted on Twitter Saturday saying “Great News” adding that he had spoken with God and “things have evolved enormously”.

Stevenson, a 41-year-old Canadian fighter of Haitian descent, was helped to the dressing room after losing the World Boxing Council crown in his 10th title defence over five years.

After unbeaten 31-year-old Gvozdyk finished him off with a crushing right hand that left Stevenson leaning awkwardly against the ropes, Stevenson was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Doctors aid he suffered “severe traumatic brain injury” that required neurosurgery.
