Red-hot Panipak Wongpattanakit  beat Minah Ha of South Korea 13-3 to win the women’s 49kg flyweight title in the World Taekwando Grand Slam Champions Series in Wuxi on Sunday.

The 21-year-old from Surat Thani outclassed Minah to win the gold medal in the Olympics Qualifying tournament. It was an impressive finish to the season for the taekwondo exponent after major 2018 wins including two World Grand Prix titles, in Manchester and Taoyuan, and the Asian Games gold medal. She has won a total of six events over the past 12 months.

She also earned a 2020 Olympic quota for Thailand in the 49kg category and won the US$70,000 for yesterday’s victory.

Thailand’s baby-faced assassin shoots down Rose, Stenson

Jakarta – THAILAND’S Poom Saksansin showed why he is a class act when he fended off challenges from his more illustrious rivals and fast-charging compatriots by closing with a four-under-par 68 to win the Indonesian Masters yesterday.

Despite his lowly world ranking of 239, Poom refused to be cowed into submission by world No 2 Justin Rose, Sweden’s Henrik Stenson (No 27) and a host of Asian Tour champions assembled in Jakarta for the Asian Tour season finale.

“I really look up to Henrik [Stenson]. I was really happy when I saw his name in the field this week. I was hoping to play with him in the first two rounds actually. I was very happy when I finally get to play with him in the final round,” said Poom, 25, who won this event two years ago.

“I am very excited right now and looking forward to a better season next year. I can’t wait to come back and defend my title,” added Poom, dubbed the Baby-Faced Assassin for his youthful looks.

Like his first Indonesian Masters victory in 2016, Poom had his uncle, Pratya Ployprapai, on his bag again. Together, they forged another formidable partnership to win by three shots with a four-day total of 20-under-par 268.

Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond started the day six shots behind Poom in third place, but stormed out in 32 and then birdied 10 and eagled 12 to lie within striking distance of his third Asian Tour title.

However, two dropped shots on 15 and 17 put paid to his hopes before eagle-three on 18 saw him end his Asian Tour season with seven top-10s and one victory.

Thailand’s Panuphol Pittayarat, who won his National open in June, claimed his third top-10 result of the season by finishing third with a bogey-free final round 66 at the US$750,000 event.

A charge by Stenson to deny Poom glory failed to materialise as the Swede’s putter went cold.

Defending champion Justin Rose had to finish tied-16th or better to move back to world No 1 but posted a disappointing 75 to finish tied-17th.

P.V. Sindhu celebrated gold at last after the Indian defeated Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara to win badminton’s season-ending World Tour Finals on Sunday.

The 23-year-old has suffered a series of near-misses in recent years, winning silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and again at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games this year.

The world number six, renowned for her never-say-die attitude, has also twice lost in the final of the World Championships and was runner-up in last year’s season finale.

But she put all that heartbreak behind her in the Chinese city of Guangzhou, beating the fifth-ranked Okuhara 21-19, 21-17 in the women’s final in just over an hour.

Sindhu, who was always in control of the match, sealed the championship with a forehand smash, before collapsing to the court floor on her hands and knees.

The men’s final later Sunday tees up the two top players in the world, top-ranked Kento Momota of Japan against number two and home star Shi Yuqi.

PTT Thailand Grand Prix voted best of 2018

sports December 16, 2018 13:25

The race weekend at Buriram was the most attended and has been voted the best of the season on its debut.

2018 was an important year for Thailand and MotoGP™. On the paddock’s first visit to Chang International Circuit for testing, fans flocked to the track to get their first glimpse of the sport and ahead of the first ever Grand Prix in the country, the pre-event in Bangkok showed the fervor for MotoGP™ as more than 100 representatives of the media packed in to hear the thoughts of reigning Champion Marc Marquez. There was a lot of expectation but the Thai GP was an incredible success and has now been named the best of the season by the MotoGP™ Paddock and the decision communicated to the Grand Prix Commission.

The event at Buriram was also the best attended with over 220,000 people heading to Chang International Circuit over the three days. They were treated to a modern classic as Marquez fought it out with Andrea Dovizioso down to the final corner, coming out on top for the first time in one of the pair’s many head-to-head duels in the last few seasons. It was an exciting and fitting debut, with the Thai venue and crowds providing the perfect backdrop. Rewarded for the incredible organisation, facilities and atmosphere at the event, the Thai GP will now look ahead to 2019 in a bid to retain the prestigious prize.

Newin Chidchob, President of Chang International Circuit: “On behalf of both the people of Buriram and Thailand, we are extremely honored to receive the MotoGP Grand Prix of the year 2018. We are sincerely grateful for the recognition we have received for PTT Thailand Grand Prix. Of course, during the preparation of the event we ran into countless obstacles, but in overcoming them we grew, and ultimately resulted in the success of the event. A big thank you to all our event and circuit sponsors especially the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and PTT Public Company Limited for the immense support during this event. We must also thank the people of Buriram, for showing the capability of Thai people to the world. Many of the unique functions of the event such as the “E-Tan” truck which we utilized as the event’s shuttle bus. The Muay Thai (Thai boxing) expo to showcase Thai martial arts and culture. Not to mention all the volunteers who came to simply pick up the trash and keep the event clean. Everyone really came together to make this sports entertainment experience for our visitors from around the world unforgettable. Lastly, we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to our good friends Dorna Sports who saw potential in us and gave us the opportunity to be a part of the world’s greatest motorcycle series. We promise to always use the experience gained in every event to create a better PTT Thailand Grand Prix every season. Thank you!”

Herve Poncharal, President of IRTA: “The whole MotoGP paddock was keen to discover how the new Thai GP would be, we were impatient for it to arrive and there was plenty of expectation. In the end we can be assured it was the best GP of the season due to many different aspects – we expected good, but we didn’t know quite what they would be able to achieve.

“Everything went smoothly, the commitment of the organisers was fantastic and they faced any problems through the weekend quickly, trying to find solutions as soon as possible. The crowd, the people…every single person involved was happy and always smiling. The fans’ support was incredible, the access to the circuit was fast and they demonstrated that they understood MotoGP – creating a commercial area close to the paddock, giving good exposure to our businesses, investors, sponsors, teams and riders. It’s also significant that a new event in this area – an important region for MotoGP – has achieved this result. It’s a perfect example for other countries to follow and this prize is fully deserved. From my point of view it will be hard for them to improve!”

Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports: “I was delighted to welcome Buriram onto the MotoGP calendar and I’m delighted to see the Thai GP be recognised as the best this season. Asia is an important market for the Championship and events like Buriram only further underline the incredible popularity of our sport in the region. They are a perfect blueprint for future events and we’re excited to return to Buriram already.”

Vietnam beat Malaysia at home to claim Suzuki Cup

An early goal by Nguyen Anh Duc proved decisive as Vietnam beat Malaysia 1-0 at My Dinh National Stadium on Saturday to lift the AFF Suzuki Cup for the second time.

The Vietnamese had allowed a two-goal lead to slip in a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Kuala Lumpur last Tuesday but Anh Duc restored their advantage when he volleyed home from close range after only six minutes.

Goalkeeper Dang Van Lam made a series of fine saves to preserve the home side’s advantage as they won 3-2 on aggregate and claimed the ASEAN regional title for the first time since 2008.

Vietnam had the benefit of two away goals from the first leg and they made an excellent start in Hanoi, taking the lead when Nguyen Quang Hai’s chip from the left found Anh Duc, whose left-footed volley was too powerful for goalkeeper Farizal Marlias to keep out of his net.

Mohamadou Sumareh went close to levelling for Malaysia in the 11th minute with a clever back-heel which went narrowly wide, while Do Hung Dung should have done better for the hosts in the 33rd minute after he received the ball unmarked on the edge of the box but shot wastefully wide.

Van Lam was called into action just before half-time to tip Syahmi Safari’s first-time effort over his crossbar and he showed fine reflexes again early in the second to bat Sumareh’s header clear before making another fine save to keep out Safawi Rasid’s free-kick.

Ten players –- six Vietnamese and four Malaysians –- were booked in the scrappy encounter which culminated in the dismissal of Shahrul Saad in stoppage time when he received his second yellow card after committing a foul on the halfway line to snuff out a Vietnamese counter-attack.

Qatar unveils 2022 World Cup final stadium design

Qatar unveils 2022 World Cup final stadium design

sports December 16, 2018 07:21

Qatar on Saturday revealed the design for the stadium that will in four years’ time host the first ever World Cup finals game to be played in the Middle East.

The 80,000-seat Lusail Stadium — also the venue for the 2022 World Cup final — was revealed in an elaborate ceremony attended by the country’s ruler Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and other dignitaries, including the United Nations’ secretary-general, Antonio Guterres.

Hassan al-Thawadi, the head of the country’s World Cup organising body, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, called the unveiling a “significant milestone”.

“Every milestone for us is always important,” he said.

“The announcement of the design of the stadium is very, very important… it’s the last stadium as well.”

The Lusail Stadium is the eighth and final venue to be revealed for the Qatar World Cup.

Designed by British architects Foster and Partners, the stadium is said to take its inspiration from Arab craftmanship, said the committee.

It also stands close to the site of the former home of Qatar’s founder, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani al-Thani.

The stadium sits in the completely new city of Lusail, a $45 billion (40 billion euro) project located 15 kilometres (nine miles) north of the capital Doha.

It is one of the largest infrastructure schemes undertaken by Qatar, which is undergoing enormous transformation for the World Cup.

Construction work, in the shape of a Qatari/Chinese joint project, is set to finish in 2020.

The unveiling of Lusail comes as world football’s governing body FIFA is still considering whether to expand the tournament from 32 teams to 48.

If that expansion occurs — there is currently a feasibility study underway — it is likely that tournament games will be shared among other countries in the region.

“Ultimately the decision (on expansion) will be made with FIFA and Qatar,” said Thawadi.

Liverpool are the ‘lucky ones’ moans Mourinho

sports December 16, 2018 07:10

By AFP

Jose Mourinho has claimed Liverpool are “the lucky ones” as they bid to end a wait of nearly three decades to win the English league title.

Mourinho and his Manchester United side visit Anfield on Sunday with Liverpool 16 points ahead of their bitter rivals.

But Mourinho points to perceived good fortune enjoyed by Liverpool in recent victories over Everton, Bournemouth and Napoli as evidence they have lady luck on their side as they challenge for their first championship since 1990.

“Of course, they are very confident about themselves,” Mourinho told reporters. “They are top of the league, they have this feeling of – I know that feeling well – the feeling of the lucky ones where everything goes in your direction.

“They know how they beat Everton, they know that the last match, the opening goal was offside, and they know that against Napoli in the last seconds they could be out.

“They have this feeling that I also had when my teams were top of the league and it looks like everything goes in your direction.”

Klopp’s side certainly benefitted from a stroke of luck when a defensive error gifted them a stoppage-time victory in the Merseyside derby, although a clearly offside opening goal by Mohamed Salah at Bournemouth was only the first of four scored by the rampant Reds.

And, while the midweek victory over Napoli was only confirmed when Alisson made a spectacular late save, the success carried last season’s Champions League runners-up through to the last 16 and has further raised the mood of optimism around Anfield.

– Weaknesses –

Not that Mourinho expects his rivals to take inconsistent United lightly when they meet.

“I think they are obviously very, very confident. But I think they are not stupid,” he said.

“They also know that we have our weaknesses, our strengths, and I think they will respect our strengths. I think if they don’t do that I will be happy with that.

“They know that they need every point if they want to be champions so I think they are professionals and being professional is respecting Manchester United. They know that we can go there and win.”

Mourinho, meanwhile, claims he does not yet know if he will have money to spend in the January transfer window which opens in barely two weeks’ time.

Unsourced reports have claimed repeatedly in recent months that the United manager has been frustrated at the lack of backing he has received from his club’s owners in the transfer market.

Last January, the window proved a busy one for Mourinho, as he completed the signing of Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez.

And, although that particular transfer has yet to prove a success, the Portuguese manager is clearly keen to do some more business next month.

“I don’t know. I don’t know if we are going to have new players – I would like to – but I don’t know if it is possible or not,” he said.

“It depends on the club. I don’t know and, honestly, I’m focused on my job of playing Liverpool and next week playing Cardiff.”

Mourinho insisted he is not concerned by the obvious lack of progress being made by his club in his two and a half years in charge.

“I’m not frustrated because my work is to demand from players that they give everything they have and what I demand – I only demand things that I can give myself,” he said.

“So what I ask the players to do – that’s what I do. You have to work hard, you have to work on your limits. It’s my job.”

POOM READY FOR FINAL SHOWDOWN WITH STENSON AT BNI INDONESIAN MASTERS

Jakarta – Thailand’s Poom Saksansin, dubbed the ‘assassin’ by Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, will have another chance to take down the Major winner when they are paired together in the final group of the BNI Indonesian Masters presented by Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN), PT.Lautan Luas.Tbk and Bank Mandiri on Sunday.

Poom caused one of the one of the biggest upsets early in the year when he defeated Henson at the EurAsia Cup in Malaysia at the start of the year.

The 25-year-old Thai is looking for another repeat after he held on to his overnight lead by posting a two-under-par 70 to take a three-shot advantage over his idol, Stenson.

Playing in Indonesia for the first time, Stenson carded the lowest round of the day with a 68 to take second place with his three-day total of 13-under-par 203 at the Asian Tour season-ending event.

The Major winner is ready to put up another gallant fight to deny Poom of having bragging rights over him again at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club.

Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond snatched the outright third place after returning with a 69 to put himself within sights of ending his year inside the top-10 on the Habitat for Humanity standings.

Panuphol, who earned his Asian Tour breakthrough in Indonesia last year, was pleased with his third round efforts after signing for a 70 that placed him in a share of fourth place with defending champion Justin Rose and compatriot Jakraphan Premsirigorn.

With seven shots separating him and Poom heading into the final 18 holes, Panuphol is aware of the challenges ahead and is determined to surmount a late charge.

Olympic silver medallist P.V. Sindhu will face Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in Sunday’s decider at the badminton World Tour Finals for a share of the $1.5 million prize money.

The sixth-ranked Indian has been in imperious form all week in the Chinese city of Guangzhou and made it a fourth victory with a bruising defeat of Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon.

The 23-year-old Sindhu, renowned for her never-say-die attitude, needed all her resolve to finally see off Ratchanok 21-16, 25-23 in a captivating semi-final.

“I’m quite happy with my fitness level this week. It’s too bad that I made bad decisions on some shots. It’s been a great year for me though,” said Ratchanok after completing her last match of the seasson.

Thai players also lost in the mixed doubles as Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taeratanachai were sent packing 21-19 14-21 12-21 by Chinese Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong in the semi-finals.

In the other last-four clash on Saturday in the women’s draw, Okuhara, a place above Sindhu at five in the world, emerged from an all-Japanese clash against Akane Yamaguchi.

Okuhara defeated her compatriot, who is ranked two in the world, 21-17, 21-14.

The men’s semi-finals were due to take place later Saturday.

Japan’s world champion Kento Momota plays Son Wan-ho of South Korea and surprise package Sameer Verma of India takes on Shi Yuqi of China.

LCFC PLAYERS HELP LAUNCH 2019 KING POWER QUAD NATIONS TOURNAMENT

Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel and Shinji Okazaki met with Great Britain’s Wheelchair Rugby team at King Power Stadium on Thursday, to officially launch the 2019 King Power Quad Nations tournament.

It returns to Leicester’s Morningside Arena in March, following the success of the inaugural event in February of this year, which attracted more than 5,000 supporters to the city.

The USA were crowned overall winners of the tournament after beating Australia in the Final, while Great Britain were denied a bronze medal by Japan.

Leicester City’s owners, King Power, are once again the title sponsors for the tournament, which underlines their commitment to bringing world-class sport to the region and gives the city a chance to showcase its ability to host international events.

The tournament takes place over three days and sees four of the world’s best wheelchair rugby teams compete – including Great Britain, Canada, France and Japan, who won gold at the World Wheelchair Rugby Championships in Sydney this summer.

Senior Executive Vice President of King Power International and CEO of Leicester City Football Club, Susan Whelan, said:“King Power is very proud of its associations to world class sport and to the city of Leicester, so we’re honoured to support the Wheelchair Rugby Quad Nations for a second year. The 2018 event drew thousands of people from all over the world to witness some outstanding matches and I’m sure 2019 will be even bigger and better.

“It takes a remarkable level of dedication and commitment to reach an elite standard in any sport, but there is something additional to be admired about athletes with the passion and determination to overcome disability and succeed on the international stage. The tournament will be a great spectacle for the city, which I’m sure will be extremely proud to play host to another world class sporting event.”

Widely known as ‘Murderball’, the supercharged and brutal sport is fast-paced and exciting, with players competing in specially designed wheelchairs.

For Team GB, the tournament is an important opportunity to put down a marker ahead of next year’s European Championships in Denmark, where they will look to defend their crown.

CEO of Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby, David Pond, said:“We are delighted to return to Leicester for this fantastic tournament. All teams were overwhelmed by the warmth of the welcome we received by the people of Leicester when we played the first King Power Quad Nations in the city and we are hoping for even bigger crowds this time. We are also really appreciative of King Power who have come forward again to sponsor the event, so a big thank you to them. Spectators will see the game at the very highest level and it’s fantastic that World Champions, Japan, will be joining us.”

The King Power Quad Nations tournament will be held at Leicester’s Morningside Arena between Friday 1 March and Sunday 3 March, 2019.
